Abstract:
According to The Humane Society of the United States from 2006 to 2008 there were more than 3,000 pit bulls removed from dogfighting rings. The majority of surviving dogs were euthanized upon confiscation by authorities. The purpose of this research was to examine the possible impact of Michael Vick’s dogfighting case on print media coverage of pit bull-type dogs. The research questions were whether the extensive coverage of his dogfighting charges would change how media portray these dogs, and whether the issue of dogfighting would become a more widely-covered topic. The research process included a literature review of scholarly works written about pit bulls, and a qualitative analysis of articles from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and USA Today published one year before and after the Vick case broke, using “pit bull” as the key phrase. Articles were divided into different categories depending on the contextual use of the term “pit bull.” Findings were based on the analysis of those categories. The results indicated positive portrayals of pit bulls and discussions of dogfighting were primarily isolated to the coverage of Vick’s case and dogs. The more than 200 other recorded raids on dogfighting rings that same year went unmentioned, but six stories about aggressive pit bull-type dogs were covered. This indicates media coverage of pit bulls did not change. Media can learn there is more to cover than limiting the focus on celebrity dogfighters and the cliché of pit bulls as vicious. These changes in coverage could lead to an overall positive change in the public’s perception of pit bull-type dogs.

An element v of an arbitrary ring R is called aninvolution if v2= 1 and a quasi-involution if either v or 1−vis an involution. We thereby define R to be quasi invo-cleanas the one whose elements are written in the form ofa sum of an idempotent and a quasi-involution. This considerably extends the class of invo-clean rings introduced by the present author in Commun. Korean Math. Soc. (2017) and the class of weakly tripotent rings introducedby Breaz and Cˆımpean in Bull. Korean Math. Soc. (2018). We, more-over, prove the curious fact that the newly defined class of quasi invo-cleanrings actually coincides with the class of weakly invo-clean rings defined by Danchev in Afr. Mat. (2017).

Let [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] be two rings, [Formula: see text] an ideal of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] be a ring homomorphism. The ring [Formula: see text] is called the amalgamation of [Formula: see text] with [Formula: see text] along [Formula: see text] with respect to [Formula: see text]. It was proposed by D’anna and Fontana [Amalgamated algebras along an ideal, Commutative Algebra and Applications (W. de Gruyter Publisher, Berlin, 2009), pp. 155–172], as an extension for the Nagata’s idealization, which was originally introduced in [Nagata, Local Rings (Interscience, New York, 1962)]. In this paper, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions under which [Formula: see text], and some related constructions, is either a Hilbert ring, a [Formula: see text]-domain or a [Formula: see text]-ring in the sense of Adams [Rings with a finitely generated total quotient ring, Canad. Math. Bull. 17(1) (1974)]. By the way, we investigate the transfer of the [Formula: see text]-property among pairs of domains sharing an ideal. Our results provide original illustrating examples.

There is a large body of evidence showing that the existence of a suitably-constrained derivation on a 3-prime near-ring forces the near-ring to be a commutative ring. The purpose of this paper is to study generalized semiderivations which satisfy certain identities on 3-prime near-ring and generalize some results due to [H. E. Bell and G. Abstract:
It is well known that, under favorable conditions, tidal interactions between a spiral galaxy and a more compact elliptical leads to the formation of embedded rings in the disk (e.g. Chatterjee 1979, Bull. Astron. Soc. India, 7, 32); in addition there are also nuclear rings whcih do not seem to have a tidal origin (e.g. Buta 1986, ApJ, 306, 768). The two types of rings occur in different regions of the spirals, which can be explained on the basis of the tidal hypothesis by extending the previous research work of Chatterjee (1984, Ap&SS, 106, 309). In this context, using the same theory, we study many normal on-axis collisions (as rings are best formed for this orientation) between a disk galaxy, modeled as an exponential disk with a polytropic n = 0,3,4, bulge (mass being equally distributed amongst the polytropic indices), and a compact spherical intruder, modeled with a polytropic n = 2, 3, 4, distribution (mass being equally distributed amongst the polytropic indices). The internal energy changes suffered by the disk, have a direct bearing on the sharpness of the rings, and are directly obtained from the relationship, for the fractional change in internal energy of the disk, as fE = γβ, where β is a function of the galactic models and the collision parameter γ = G(σs/V2) ∝ σs/V2 (where σs is the projected velocity of collision). We find that sharp rings form for fE ≥ 0.5; beyond this value of fE the intensity contrast of the rings diminish. However, fairly sharp rings (from an observational point of view) form for fE ≥ 1/3, which corresponds to 7 ≥ 0.01; which corresponds to a density maximum near a region ~ (1/3)R (R being the radius of the disk galaxy), so that rings of tidal origin are not expected to be prominent at a distance interior to ~ 1/3 of the radius of the disk galaxy. They are not expected to form interior to ~ 1/10 of the radius of the disk.

Abstract:
Penile incarceration is a rare but serious problem. Rapid treatment is necessary to prevent penile infarction. Glass bottles, metal rings, steel nuts and bull rings have been reported as constricting agents. Depending on the type of material, various tools such as diamond drills, bolt cutters and glass saws have been used to remove the objects. Penile strangulation by metal ring is a rare surgical emergency situation which requires urgent intervention to avoid vascular and urethral injury. It is usually associated with an attempt to improve sexual act and/or to prolong erection, psychosexual disorder. It is difficult to cut a metal ring as the edema was out of proportion and metal ring had made pressure ulcer at pen scrotal junction. The treatment of penile strangulation is decompression of the constricted penis to facilitate free blood flow and micturition. It requires no particular skill but does require resourcefulness to perform the removal simply and effectively, and with as little discomfort for the patient as possible. Here, author presented a case of penile strangulation in which metal ring was removed by silk thread.

Grohs, Joshua Walter. "Comparing In Situ and Bulk Constitutive Properties of a Structural Adhesive." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34403.

Full text
Abstract:
In the continuing quest for more efficient designs, structural adhesives are being used in place of, or with, traditional fastening methods; however designing with adhesives is refined as traditional methods. To obtain the adhesive design properties, tests are often performed on bulk tensile and bonded shear specimens. Questions remain about the relationship between properties obtained from in situ adhesive joints and bulk adhesive specimens. As a result, an experimental plan was developed which characterized both the linear and nonlinear region of bulk and in situ adhesive performance of a two-part acrylic adhesive from Dow Chemical Company. A standard uniaxial tensile test was used for the bulk normal, while an Iosipescu shear test was used to characterize the bulk shear performance. In situ testing was performed on a napkin-ring specimen loaded in both tension and torsion. Stress-strain relationships in both shear and normal were developed and bulk and in situ adhesive performance was compared. Observations from testing were:
  1. Bulk shear and in situ shear tests showed similar performance in both the linear and nonlinear regions.
  2. Modulus of elasticity in bulk adhesive tests was similar to the effective modulus of elasticity in in situ tests.
  3. Prediction of normal yield strengths of the in situ adhesive through simple failure theory models proved to be inaccurate. Stress singularities, loading imperfections, and potentially a hydrostatic sensitivity were considered possible explanations.
  4. Adhesive showed sensitivity to voiding and surface flaws when loaded in a tensile configuration, refinement of specimen fabrication minimized these effects.

Racanelli, Claudio. "Analysis of flowability of bulk solids in a pilot scale Silo." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2017. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/12864/.

Abstract:

Wenzel-Bartens, Julia. "Development of Urban Tree Growth Models Based on Site and Soil Characteristics." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29625.

Full text
Abstract:
Trees provide numerous benefits crucial to urban environments, yet poor growing conditions often prevent trees from reaching their genetic potential for growth, longevity, and ecosystem function. To overcome these limitations, greater understanding of tree growth in the urban environment is needed. The goal of this research project was therefore to characterize a broad suite of soil characteristics associated with urban tree plantings and evaluate their suitability for modeling physical dimensions and growth rates of urban trees. A series of observational studies and experiments was conducted on urban soils inhabited by two tree species (Zelkova serrata (Thunb.) Mikano and Quercus phellos L.) in Washington, DC and one tree species (Quercus virginiana Mill.) in Jacksonville, FL – two major metropolitan areas of the eastern United States with contrasting climate and soils. Characterization of urban soil attributes within cities revealed low variability for some properties (soil texture, pH, and certain plant nutrients with coefficients of variation (CV) below 0.5), but high variability (CV>1.0) for others (nitrate, ammonium, copper, and zinc). This is dependent on the location. These findings suggest that tree planting site evaluations may not require measurements for all soil properties and that representative sampling may be sufficient to accurately characterize most soil properties within a city. Field assessment of urban tree soils also revealed that conventional measures of soil compaction are difficult to obtain due to obstructions by roots and other foreign objects. To address the critical need for efficient and reliable assessment of soil compaction around urban trees, an experiment was conducted to develop bulk density estimation models for four common soil texture classes using soil strength and soil moisture as predictor variables. These models provided medium (0.42) to high (0.85) coefficients of determination when volumetric water content (VWC) was log transformed, demonstrating that measurements of soil texture, strength, and moisture can provide rapid, reliable assessment of soil compaction. Tree growth modeling focused on three response variables: canopy projection (CP), canopy volume (CV), and peak-increment-area age (PIA). To calculate PIA, tree-ring analysis was used to determine the age at which maximal trunk diameter growth occurred between transplanting and time of sampling. Because Q. virginiana has difficult-to-distinguish growth rings, an intensive tree-ring analysis of cores collected from these trees was conducted. The analysis revealed interseries correlation coefficients of up to 0.66, demonstrating that Q. virginiana can be aged with fairly high confidence in an urban setting. Empirical models developed for all three tree species using the suite of soil and site variables explained 25% – 83% of the observed variability in tree physical dimensions and growth rates. Soil pH was found to be a significant predictor variable for the majority of growth models along with nutrients such as Fe, B, Mn, and Zn, which are also associated with soil alkalinity. Models for PIA possessed the highest coefficient of determination, suggesting that measurements of soil conditions can be used confidently to predict the age at which growth rate subsides in these species. CV and CP were not predicted as well by soil-related variables, presumably because above-ground constraints such as pruning and building encroachment can affect canopy size without necessarily affecting growth rate. Certain prediction models for all three species included predictor variables with counterintuitive influences on tree growth (e.g., negative influences of soil depth on Q. phellos and soil volume on Q. virginiana), suggesting that either these urban trees are responding to these variables in a novel manner or that variables unaccounted for in these models (perhaps related to urbanization or high vehicular traffic) are concomitantly influencing tree growth.

Abstract:
A study of the functionalization of boron(III) complexes, BODIPY and BOPHY, was carried out in order to characterize new n and p-type materials for bulk heterojunction organic solar cells. The properties of this materials were investigated through spectroscopic, electrochemical and charges transport analysis, and the most promising candidates were characterized in photovoltaic devices. For the first time a BOPHY derivative was used as p-type materials in such organic solar cell, providing a promising PCE of 4.2%. A study of the orthogonal functionalization of the 1,3,5,7-tetramethyls BODIPY allowed the synthesis and characterization of a new BODIPY based p-type material which exhibits the highest PCE of 5.8% for such material to date. The last chapter of this thesis develops an original and versatile synthetic method to obtain α-fused BODIPY. This family of molecules exhibit both intense absorption in the near-IR and low lying LUMO, and has been hence characterized as n-type materials

Dibenzoylmethane has been investigated as organocatalyst for the bulk ring-opening copolymerization (ROcP) of L-Lactide (LA) and ε-caprolactone (CL) initiated by alcohols at high temperature. Copolymer presenting a gradient to statistical structure has been generated. Kinetic study has pointed out that DBM is a poor chain end and monomer activator, the apparent acceleration of the ROcP process may be due to the in situ generation of carboxylic acids which can catalyze the reaction as well. Benzoic acid, a weak carboxylic acid, has then been investigated for the efficient bulk ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of LA and CL initiated by various alcohols at high temperature. The kinetic study has pointed out that LA and CL have different reactivity in presence of benzoic acid which acts as a bifunctional activator. The experimental results were supported by computational calculations. An array of statistical copolymer of varying LA/CL compositions have been synthesized by ROcP of LA and CL catalyzed by BA in presence of various alcohol as initiators in bulk at high temperature. Finally, miscellaneous organocatalysts have been tested for the ROcP of LA and CL

Abstract:
In the master’s thesis, we evaluate the impact of different types of soil treatment on the physical and hydro-physical properties of the subsurface layers of soil. The experimental research took place near the town of Šakvice in two chosen areas treated conventionally, i.e. by tillage. The PRP SOL substance was applied to one of the observed areas. Unimpaired soil samples were taken during the vegetation period of the grown crops in the topsoil (10,20 cm) and in the undersoil (30 cm) on 13th May 2009 and on 10th September 2009. The chosen physical parameters of the soil, i.e. the reduced volume mass, the porosity, the distribution of pores, the actual content of water and air, were determined by standard analytical methods. The double-ring infiltration method was used during the field measuring of infiltration. The Philip’s equation and the Philip’s type three-parameter equation were used for the data analysis, serving as a base for estimation of saturated water content Ks. A protractor with a constant gradient was used during laboratory measuring. The results of a year-long research have not shown any major influence of the PRP SOL substance on the physical quality of the subsurface layers of soil in the observed area. On the contrary, the permeability od the soil obtained on the basis of Ks estimation is higher in the area treated by the PRP SOL substance.

Full text
Abstract:
Profile radial-axial ring rolling is a complex bulk forming used to produce seamless rings for critical structural components in many industries, such as machinery, aeronautics, energy and automotive. The process is characterized by high nonlinearity, unsteady three-dimensional deformation, dynamic contact boundary conditions caused by the rotations of ring and rolls. In this paper, a numerical model based on explicit finite element approach is proposed to simulate and analyze the process. An expanded ring with profile section has been obtained by numerical simulations with the dynamic model based on explicit finite element method.

Abstract:
A series of tests have been carried out on cast high strength ferritic steel rings 1090 mm internal diameter, with a central 20kg PE4 spherical charge, equivalent to 25 kg TNT. The rings have circular regions in them which have been thinned, some 16 mm wall thickness and some 26 mm thickness. The bulk of the ring undergoes limited cyclic plastic straining as the rings vibrate following the blast impact. The locally thinned regions undergo cyclic plastic strains of up to +/− 4%. The paper describes the experimental arrangements and results. Methods have been developed to measure high strains in the rings and the final plastic displacements of the windows have also been measured. It has proved remarkably difficult to obtain good finite element calculations of the strains measured. After the first blast, the thinned regions had some cracking and the extent of the cracking increased on further blast loads. Within the limits of measured/calculated strains, an assessment has been carried out to the new local tearing rules in ASME VIII Div 2 and 3 and compared to the observed damage.

In ASME Turbo Expo 2017: Turbomachinery Technical Conference and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/gt2017-63891.

Full text
Abstract:
Under high pressure, the elastic deformation of floating ring seals has a significant influence on the seal leakage flowrate and rotordynamic coefficients. The present study establishes a coupled model of the clearance flow and elastic structure of floating rings with bulk flow model and finite element method. The results show that the structural deformation reduces the clearance thickness and decreases the leakage flowrate. On the other hand, the elastic deformation reduces the direct stiffness, and increases the cross-coupled damping and inertia coefficients. In addition, the deformation induces the cross-coupled stiffness and direct damping to increase rapidly with increasing eccentricity ratio. Generally, the structural deformation deteriorates the rotordynamic characteristics of floating ring seals. In order to alleviate the adverse influences, a deformation compensation method is presented and proved to be effective.

Abstract:
Bulk transfer systems are part of very important bulk material transferring systems used on drilling rigs, and mainly provide and transfer pulverous material for offshore drilling rigs. The authors use the continuity equation of fluid flow, Bernoulli equation, Theory of energy loss, and gas-solid two phase flow theory to evaluate the bulk transfer ability of the bulk system for the CPOE-16 Jack-up, and to optimize the bulk piping layout, elbow radius and elbow quantity. These research results have been applied to the CPOE-16 Jack-up and have proven that implementation of these results can be effective.

Full text
Abstract:
The present work presents a bulk flow based numerical analysis of squeeze film dampers (SFD) provided with circumferential grooves, feeding orifices and piston ring sealing devices. This means that the bulk flow model for inertia dominated flow regimes (high Re) was adapted for taking into account thin film discontinuities, mass sources located in the thin film zone (for modelling feeding orifices) or on the boundaries (piston ring seals with open slots). In the present work the rotor is whirling on a centered whirl and the bulk flow equation are solved by following a time step integration.

Abstract:
Optical solitons have been observed experimentally for the first time as temporal solitons in optical fibers and then as spatial solitons — self-trapped beams [1-3]. As the circular-symmetry beam in a Kerr medium is unstable displaying blow-up and collapse, spatial solitons have been observed in bulk media as soliton strips or in planar waveguide geometries.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract. Carbon fiber reinforced (CFR) composite rings with and without interlaminar carbon nanotubes (I-CNTs) were manufactured starting from high performance prepregs used in aeronautics. Nano-particles deposition was obtained by an innovative easily scalable procedure which does not affect composite processability. A CNTs-solvent solution was sonicated for an established time to reduce bulk CNTs agglomerates. The solution was poured on prepreg stripes and left at room temperature for solvent evacuation. The prepreg stripes were wrapped on steel pipe to obtain the annular configuration and manufactured by an out-of-autoclave (OOA) process. The consolidation pressure was applied through a thermo-shrinkable tube and curing occurred in oven. Stereomicroscopy and mechanical tests were performed on CFR and I-CNTs/CFR rings. A good adhesion among the plies was observed as well as the positive effects of CNTs deposition; an increase of 34%, 15% and 17% was obtained for the stiffness, the peak load and the fracture energy of the functionalized rings, respectively.

Abstract:
Fibers such as fabric and bristles can be readily fabricated into a variety of seal configurations that are compliant and responsive to high speed or lightly loaded systems. A linear, circular, or contoured brush seal system is a contact seal consisting of the bristle pattern and hardened interface. When compared to a labyrinth seal the brush seal system is superior and features low leakage, dynamic stability, and permits compliant structures. But in turn the system usually requires a hardened smooth interface, permits only limited pressure drops. Wear life and wear debris for operations with static or dynamic excitation are largely undetermined. A seal system involves control of fluid within specific boundaries. The brush and rub ring (or rub surface) form a seal system. In this paper, design similitudes, a bulk flow model, and rub ring (interface) coatings are discussed. The bulk flow model calculations are based on flows in porous media and filters. The coatings work is based on our experience and expanded to include current practice.

Full text
Abstract:
It is understood that this work relates to issues arising from a failure in a pipe carrying wet sour gas, in which cracking developed from a shallow hard feature, 1 to 3mm deep and about 50mm in diameter. The overall aim is to prevent such failures, and samples of material from this program, selected on the basis of the work reported here, have been subjected to sour testing under PRCI project SSC-2-14, and there is also a link to PRCI project NDE-4-11, which is exploring non-destructive techniques for the detection of local hard regions. This report presents the techniques used in the assessment of steel samples, and summarizes the results. Full results for each pipe sample are presented in a series of appendices. Most samples were API 5L grade X65, or the equivalent DVN OS F101 grade 450, but there was also one API 5L grade X60 pipe. All were made by thermo-mechanical controlled processing (TMCP) The majority of samples were supplied in the form of pipe rings, but three were supplied as flat plate. The core of the testing consisted of Vickers hardness measurements on metallographic sections, ranging from relatively widely spaced measurements at 10kg indenting load to detailed hardness maps at 0.1kg load. In addition bulk chemical analysis, tensile testing and Charpy testing were carried out on all samples. Near surface micro analysis and near surface carbon profile analyses were carried out on selected samples. Micrographs from all samples are presented, with detailed images related to hardness maps for selected samples.
