Abstract:
The Mt Buller Alpine Resort is located approximately 200 km north of Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia. A wastewater treatment plant services the resort and currently treats to advanced nutrient removal standards. The treated effluent is presently discharged into the Howqua River. Most Australian ski resorts are not blessed with abundant snow cover on a regular basis. Artificial snow allows most of the popular ski runs to operate for the whole of the season. At the Mt Buller resort, snow-making is presently limited by lack of water supply in the catchment. The conditions at Mt Buller resort present a unique opportunity to utilise reclaimed wastewater to allow increased snow-making capacity. It is one of the unique opportunities where the wastewater is valued as a resource rather than merely viewed as a waste problem. Wastewater reclamation for snow-making will require additional treatment for pathogen removal. It is proposed that following advanced nutrient removal, the effluent will require further treatment, including membrane ultrafiltration, so as to ensure a minimum of four barriers for pathogen removal. Pilot plant operation of a membrane ultrafiltration system commenced in June 2000 and will continue until the end of 2001, to primarily demonstrate the extent of pathogen removal.

Bergström, Erika. "Buller i förskolans inomhusmiljö." Thesis, University of Gävle, Department of Mathematics, Natural and Computer Sciences, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-4644.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis evaluates whether walls with light-frame construction are suitable to build in areas with high sound pressure levels, allowed by Sweden’s law regarding loud traffic noise nearbuildings. Previous consensus has been that exterior walls have sufficient sound insulation, regarding sound pressure levels by the residence-façade generated from traffic noise, to achieverequired indoor sound pressure levels. Due to the ongoing urbanization in Sweden, a law haspassed that increased the allowed levels of equivalent sound pressure by a residence-façade. Therefore, it has become relevant to examine if light-frame construction façades really do have sufficient sound insulation. In the study, field measurements are made on three façade walls to determine their noise reduction properties. The values from the measurements are compared to the sound insulation capacity of software-built wall-models with the same wall constructions as the field measured walls. Both the measured and the modelled walls sound insulation is also compared parallel to insulation values for light-frame construction walls found in literature. The values of the walls sound insultation are also evaluated regarding high but occurring sound pressure levels by facades and demanded levels of sound pressure indoors. Modifications are made to the construction of one modelled wall to quantify the improvement in sound insulation of the walls derived from the investigated construction-modifications.The results conclude that the examined light-frame construction walls are indeed sufficient in the aspect of sound insulation to merely satisfy the laws. The walls sound insulation is not as unambiguously sufficient when establishing what is considered a good indoor acoustic environment, instead of only achieving minimum levels required by law.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with noise from wind turbines and low-frequency traffic noise. The aim was to gain practical experience by using different measurement techniques, where the wind noise was measured by emission, immission, ambisonic and binaural recordings. Both examined wind turbines have tonal components at 500Hz and 2000Hz. From the traffic noise one could notice two strong peaks in the 1/3 octave band at 50Hz and 63Hz. The investigation of it showed that the lower peak at 50Hz came from automobiles while the one at 63Hz were from heavy trucks. The binaural recordings were used in a listening test. A listening test was conducted where 15 test subjects estimated how annoying the noise is in relation to pink noise. The result showed that the annoyance level were higher for sound containing tonal components.

Abstract:
Milosevic, S. 2014. Buller – Hur planers en bullerfri stad?. Kulturgeografiska institutionen, Uppsatser, Uppsala universitet.   This essay is about noise pollution caused by urbanization. The field study takes place in Uppsala and explores their organization of handling problems with noise pollution caused by traffic. Noise pollution has long been neglected as an environmental hazard. Studies show that noise pollution can cause severe health problems such as increased blood pressure. Therefore the EU has made a new directive on how cities should handle noise pollution. The essay also exemplifies how the work with noise pollution is implemented in a residential production of today. I have come to my results by observing the surroundings and interviewing the planning engineer of the new residential buildings on the street Stationsgatan which is close to the Central station in Uppsala, Sweden. I have also interviewed the project manager of the municipality’s action plan for reducing noise pollution which was made due to the EU-directive. My results show that we must reduce our dependence of cars and plan for a soundscape as much as we plan on the visual aspect if we want to reduce the noise pollutions in our cities. Not only will the noise pollution reduce if we reduced the use of private cars but also a lot of other pollutions would decrease.

Abstract:
Heat pumps cause noise, and in urban areas this can lead to complaints from the neighbors. Disturbing noise can affect human health adversely by causing sleep disturbances and difficulties to concentrate. Miljöbalken states that the one who installs a heat pump on his or her land is responsible for the noise that it generates. Naturvårdsverket has issued benchmarks that will serve as guidelines for noise measurements, when a suspicion of risks for human health is. Municipalities may also adopt limits in local regulations. Noise measurements are often done on the property line but a judgment of a precedent case from 2012 concludes that the measurements should be done at the facade and patio.  A survey was mailed to 221 companies that installed heat pumps. The responses showed a divided opinion on the question of how frequently the companies felt that the problems of noise complaints occurred. Most companies often discussed noise reduction measures with their customers in connection to the installation of the heat pump. However, it was far from all, though many, who used the existing regulations and guidelines in their counseling with the customers. Few companies used the benchmarks from Naturvårdsverket. The indistinct way to apply Naturvårdsverkets benchmarks that is shown in the summed cases in this report can make it difficult for the companies to use these in consultation with their customers.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This report covers projects E05 Korsvägen where the client is Trafikverket and the contractor West Link Contractors, WLC. We have chosen to examine a subject for the project and chose to immerse ourselves in noise issues. Korsvägen is a substage of the West Link built in central Gothenburg. The project will affect the environment with noise from the construction site. It is therefore interesting to investigate how the environment is affected and how workers and entrepreneurs within the project experience a noisy work environment. Furthermore, as there are increasingly large complex infrastructure projects, it is interesting to shed light on how WLC is working to achieve the requirements regarding noise. The report is a combination of quantitative and qualitative methodologies. The quantitative part consisted of two surveys. One survey examined the experience of nearby companies regarding noise disturbances from the project. The second survey examined how workers in the project are affected by noise in their daily work. For a deepening of how noise issues are handled within WLC, qualitative telephone interviews were conducted with selected people from the project. The results found that workers in the project are not sufficiently aware of the consequences and health effects caused by noise. Today there is no requirement to use hearing protection in the construction area, however, hearing protection should be used as needed when noisy work is carried out. Many workers believe that the use of hearing protection should be a requirement. The survey shows that noise from the project affects the surrounding activities and that the dissemination of information on noise disturbances is important. The noise requirements imposed against WLC have caused exemptions to be sought for certain noise-critical work operations. It also proved to be a challenge to work on these requirements for such a large project with many actors involved. Workers ' awareness of how noise affects health can be questioned. Although their daily work is perceived as noisy, they seem unaware of how noise can affect their future health. This is a health and safety issue that should be addressed. Improvement areas concerning noise issues are better communication between the parties involved and ensuring that information on noise disturbance reaches all concerned.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
A problem in today's modern society is that the noise levels are too high. These high levels of noise is a health hazard and can give man permanent damage. Noise pollution is something that must not be neglected. The purpose of this study is to identify and map the noise on Holmgatan in central Falun. The purpose is also to analyze the results and put them in relation with the regulatory requirements and guidelines regarding noise levels and to analyze the results and see if actions should be taken against the noise on Holmgatan. The thesis is limited to noise measurements and mapping of parts of Holmgatan, considered to be especially vulnerable to noise. Noise measurements were conducted during four weekdays and during times from when most stores open to most of them then closing, at. 10-18. The method consisted of noise measurements which were performed at hourly intervals along the selected portion of Holmgatan. The days on which these measurements were performed was from 2/12 to 5/12-2013. The results are reported as average value per hour of any day on which noise measurements were made. The results varied, the lowest average noise was 57 dB and the highest average noise was 83 dB. It is clearly seen that the higher values are closer to a street used by buses and other transport vehicles. The lower values were generally near Geislerka parken, which is a large garden, an open area in the middle of Holmgatan. Overall, the average noise values were between 60-65 dB. The conclusion suggests that the noise level at Holmgatan do not exceed regulatory requirements on what is considered as harmful but it is just below the guidelines for the maximum level of outdoor noise (70 dB). Actions such as planting vegetation on the facades and to redirect the traffic could be done to reduce noise levels at Holmgatan.

Abstract:
AbstractObtaining the aerodynamic parameters of a ballistic-correction bullet is crucial for improving ballistic correction efficiency and enhancing shooting accuracy. In this study, a numerical simulation method is utilized to analyze and calculate the aerodynamic characteristics of the bullet. The focus is on investigating the changes in aerodynamic parameters when the rudder wings are in both unexpanded and expanded states, as well as analyzing the impact of deflection angles on the bullet's aerodynamic characteristics. The simulation results demonstrate that the bullet exhibits favorable aerodynamic performance and static stability when the rudder wings are unexpanded, leading to improved ballistic correction efficiency during flight. Moreover, the results indicate that in the expanded state of the rudder wings, increasing the deflection angle enhances the impact on the bullet's aerodynamic characteristics, resulting in more pronounced changes and stronger correction capabilities. This research provides valuable insights into the aerodynamic characteristics of ballistic-correction bullets.

Abstract:
Fossilfria förarlösa flygande farkoster (drönare) förväntas bli allt vanligare i framtiden.

In ASME 2019 Pressure Vessels & Piping Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/pvp2019-93661.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Weld overlay is a repair method that has been used over the last 10 years to limit the growth of bulges and to extend the remaining life of delayed coking drums. Different refinery operators have used varied approaches, ranging from localized patches on specific regions of concern, to bands along circumferential welds, to large sections of structural repair that completely cover a bulged area. The authors have observed the evolution of regions repaired with internal weld overlay on 18 drums over periods of 5 and 8 years. A comparison of bulge sharpness and bulge depth on a year-over-year basis is presented to measure the effectiveness of metal weld overlay and how the overlay impacts continued distortion of the vessel. Furthermore, factors such as the taper ratio in the transition zones, and the distance between the peak of a bulged area and the edges of the weld overlay, are presented as key parameters that affect the likelihood of cracks developing along the transition zones at the upper and lower edges of the repair.

Abstract:
To study the correlation between the bullets deformation characteristics and incident parameters of a 7.62mm lead pistol bullet during impacting to concrete, and to find the sensitivity relationship between each characteristic eigenvalue and quantity parameters, the finite element model of a 7.62mm lead pistol bullet hitting the concrete target was established. The accuracy and effectiveness of the numerical simulation were verified by experiments, and the numerical method can truly reproduce the motion behavior of the bullets in the process of hitting concrete. The results showed that under normal penetration, the angle between the impact surface and the projectile axis can be judged as a normal penetration, the height of the bullet decreases with the increase of incident velocity and is more sensitive to incident velocity, and the deformation of the bullet showed more characteristics under oblique penetration, and the changing trend of each eigenvalue at a different incident angle is similar. In addition, the grey correlation analysis of each eigenvalue of bullets deformation was carried out, and the sensitivity relationship of each eigenvalue to incident parameters was obtained, which provides technical support for the ballistic reconstruction of gun-related cases.

Abstract:
The bullet deformation can truly reflect the speed and angle of bullet penetrating into the concrete, which are often used as an important basis for the reconstruction of trajectory and the judgment of shooting position in the process of case detection. Two types of pistol bullets which are 9mm Barabrum bullet and 51type 7.62mm bullet penetrating into C30 concrete at different speeds were test. The results show that the deformed bullet diameter increases with the increase in impact velocity, and the deformed bullet length decreases with the impact velocity. The relation model of bullet deformation characteristics and penetration velocity is established. The function Y is established to analyze the deformation characteristics of bullet. The relationship between Y value and impact velocity can be regarded as a piecewide linear function. The piecewide speed is consistent with the critical speed of bullet jacket cracking and breaking. The critical speed of bullet jacket cracking and breaking is about 130 m/s for 9 mm bullet and 230 m/s for 51 type 7.62 mm bullet. Function Y can well reflect the deformation law of bullet penetrating into C30 concrete at different speeds.

Abstract:
The objective of this research work was to perform a flow simulation around a running bullet and then compare and analyze three types of widely used bullet models. These are 7.62mm × 39mm, 7.62mm × 51mm, and 5.56mm × 45mm caliber popular NATO rounds respectively. Due to limited processing and computational resources, these bullet are modeled as cylindrical projectiles of similar length and diameter. Finite element analysis (FEA) are performed on these models using ANSYS explicit dynamics analysis code to investigate the effect of high velocity impact of these projectiles on a concrete plate. Three different types of meshing (coarse, fine, and fine with curvature) for each of these three cases have been used. Each projectile was fired at a different velocity. These velocities are selected in consultation with Hornady Manufacturing, Inc which has done extensive research on these bullets. The selected firing velocities for 7.62mm × 39mm, 7.62mm × 51mm, and 5.56mm × 45mm caliber bullets are 2021ft/s, 2539.4ft/s 2706.7ft/s respectively. Overall, the simulation result of explicit dynamics clearly demonstrated cavitation and mushrooming of projectiles when impacting a 0.25 inch concrete plate. The 5.56mm × 45mm projectile seemed to have the largest overall total deformation values of 2.0303, 1.0487, and 0.26079 feet as obtained from simulation of the three types of mashing. This can be attributed due to the higher velocity (2706.7ft/sec) as compared to the other two cases. Similarly, the 7.63mm × 39mm has the highest average change of velocity of 144.7, 92.3, and 99.6ft/sec respectively from the three types of meshing among the three bullets which can be attributed due to its lowest impact velocity (2021ft/s).

Abstract:
Since the creation of advanced knives and firearms with high rates of speed, safety has always been a vital issue for armed forces. A disadvantage of a regular fabric Kevlar is that, although it has an effective resistance against the impact of low-speed bullets, it reveals its weakness in the case of a stab wound and high-speed bullets. Under these circumstances, a new executable technology of fibers that improves the ballistic performance of the materials utilized in body armors is an essential necessity to build high quality and protective vests which are perfectly bulletproof. The purpose of this study is to investigate the physics and concepts of shear thickening fluids and perform a computational CFD simulation of liquid body armors which consist of a combination of polyethylene glycol liquid and nanoparticles of silica. A model of multiphase flow environment with STFKevlar, as a representative of the non-Newtonian shear thickening fluid (STF), is simulated in STAR-CCM+ in order to analyze the behavior of STFs under impact and performance of novel liquid body armors. In the current simulation, Eulerian multiphase flow and volume of fluid (VOF) are applied to generate three discrete regions and determine the volume fraction of each phase including gas, non-Newtonian liquid and solid which represent air, STFKevlar and bullet, respectively. Moreover, dynamic fluid body interactions (DFBI) and overset mesh are utilized to consider the interactions between the regions and forces applied. In this study, the properties of the bullet are based on characteristics of a regular pistol bullet, and it approaches the STFKevlar with the constant speed of 400 m/s. The results show that the non-Newtonian material is initially at equilibrium state and while the bullet approaches the STFKevlar, it acts like a shear thinning fluid. As a high-speed bullet nears the STFKevlar, it absorbs the significant amount of energy that is applied by the bullet. Consequently, the bullet stops penetrating the STFKevlar in a very small fraction of time due to the considerable increase in viscosity. As the shear rate increases over a certain critical value, viscosity increases remarkably which is the main characteristic of shear thickening transition and finally, it reaches to its maximum value of viscosity in approximately 8 × 10−5sec. In addition, a bullet applies a considerable amount of force on any Kevlar due to its high velocity and kinetic energy; however, the high resistant STFKevlar is approved as a high quality and protective vests which stops the bullet in 6 × 10−4sec.

Full text
Abstract:
The thermal effect cause by continuous firing of firearms, generally recognize have influence on the movement of bullets during in-bore process. In order to understand this influence. A finite element model coupled thermal and structure which contained bullet and barrel was established. Through the classical interior ballistic theory, the distribution and variation law of the boundary and load conditions parameters in the bore were determined, such as base pressure, propellant gas temperature, forced convection coefficient. By loading the boundary and load conditions at different positions in the barrel versus real time, the temperature distribution and deformation of the barrel after different initial temperatures and multiple continuous firing, the changes of the structure and movement parameters of bullets were calculated, and the model was validated by the temperature distribution of the barrel surface through the experimental test. The research shows that the thermal effect has a great influence on the engraving resistance of bullet, but the trajectory was little. The structural characteristics of the bullet change greatly with the increase of temperature. In addition, the thermal effect has a great influence on the vibration speed of the barrel muzzle, which may further affect the firing accuracy. Generally, when the barrel temperature is below 200 ℃ , the thermal effect has little influence, and when the barrel temperature is above 200 , the negative influence caused by the thermal effect increases linearly.

Abstract:
This paper contains several investigations on the behaviour of bulged piles. Bulge means the application of vertical steel plates somewhere near ground surface to improve the lateral bearing capacity. The results of small scale tests in sand are illustrated, which demonstrate the effectiveness of such bulge. Some theoretical investigations are presented trying to apply standard methods like the p-y-curve procedure to the design of bulged piles. An outline of possible calculation methods is given. Investigations on two different exemplary pile systems demonstrate the behaviour of the bulged structure and give an idea of the advantages of this innovative system.

Abstract:
About 29 percent of teenagers are bullied at school in the Caribbean. Victims of bullying are more lonely, sleep less, and have fewer friends than do their nonbullied peers. Although victims of bullying eat more frequently at fast food restaurants, they also experience more periods of hunger than do nonbullied children. Acting out with the goal of being considered a "cool" teenager does not work; even if adolescents frequently smoke cigarettes, bullies may still intimidate and harass them. The opposite is true for virgins. Good parenting can, however, make a difference in preventing a child from being a victim of bullying. Growing international evidence has shown that school-based programs can reduce the prevalence of bullying and that bullying has long-term negative consequences into adult life (for both bullies and victims).

Forty-seven poly-TG microsatellites were developed at the U of IL, and 11 genetic markers were developed at ARO, nine of which were poly-AGC microsatellites. Markers were typed on the reference families of CSIRO, Australia; GRANADA, Texas; and IRRF, Illinois, for chromosome assignment and linkage mapping. Nine North American al organizations contributed semen to the Dairy Bull DNA Repository (DBDR), which currently has 65,743 units from 3366 bulls. Semen was obtained for 31 out of 35 grandsires. Semen of 28 and 23 sons of two Israeli bulls was also collected. Eighteen grandsires were genotyped for 75 microsatellites. One thousand, three hundred and sixty-two sons with evaluation from 17 families were genotyped for 24 markers. Eleven thousand, six hundred and twenty sons genotypes were determined, of which 8,802 were informative. The genotype data was matched to the bulls' daughter yield deviations (DYD) for seven traits; milk, fat, and protein production; fat and protein percent; somatic cell concentration (SCS); and productive herd life. Seven loci had significant effects at p<0.05, but only two loci, TGLA263 and MGTG7, had significant effects at p<0.01, and the effect of TGLA263 on fat percentage was significant at p<0.0001. There was at least one significant effect for each of the seven traits analyzed.

Abstract:
Ground anchors connected to guy wires for tower structures in cold climates suffer from frost heaving, which causes loss of wire tension and subsequent structural instability. It is necessary to understand what ground anchors are available to resist this tendency yet are still capable of expedient installation in remote areas. To that end, three metal, traditional ground-anchor types (arrowhead, bullet, and penetrating auger) and one novel polyvinyl chloride (PVC) T-post anchor were evaluated in frozen gravels and frozen silts at a research facility in Fairbanks, Alaska. Criteria included installation capability, failure loading, and removal ability. Additionally, expedient installation techniques for use in field conditions were also demonstrated. All three traditional ground anchors failed to penetrate frozen gravels. The penetrating auger also failed to penetrate frozen silts, but the arrowhead and bullet anchors did penetrate frozen silts with difficulty. The PVC anchor is capable of being installed only in a predrilled pilot hole. Under flexural load, the arrowhead anchor cable failed at 3686.72 lb, and the bullet anchor cable failed at 1753.44 lb. The PVC slid out of its hole at a direct-pull force of 1978.24 lb and failed under flexural stress at 202.32 lb.
