Abstract:
This thesis investigates adolescents' on line literacy practices on a college-affiliated bulletin board system, BBS, in Taiwan. Aligned with New Literacy Studies, this research project understands BBS texts as a social practice and explores choices of language, writing systems, orthography and language creativity. These linguistic features constitute college students' digital literacy practices and how the students manage to perform their identity in this online community of practice. Viewing BBS texts as a social practice entails the holistic appreciation of the interplay of the purposes, contexts and resources involved in human sense-making that are appropriately approached through qualitative methods, including through taking an emic perspective. Three qualitative methods are combined: textual analysis, an online questionnaire and a semi-structured group interview. Through the analysis of texts, I show how the diverse multimodal affordances of the BBS texts are innovatively exploited by college students. I investigate lexical, grammatical, pragmatic and graphological features of BBS texts, demonstrating innovation in the writing systems, spelling, code-switching and symbols when students compose BBS texts. An online questionnaire and a group interview reveal college students' perceptions and motives that influence their BBS text-making practices. The findings reported in this thesis demonstrate these screen-based texts are multi modal and dynamic, with a combination of image, onomatopoeic sounds and various modes of representation and communication employed. BBS is shown to have enabled an extended set of orthographic choices, reshaping the nature of traditional writing systems. Students make use of these affordances to foreground their friendship, rapport and cultural bond with peers, constituting an affinity space to share common knowledge and conventions on BBS. These college students use representational resources in multilingual, multiscriptual and multimodal text-making practices and play with writing systems, scripts and symbols. This study reveals that BBS in Taiwan provides a fruitful source of materials in exploring the complexity and creativity of adolescents' digital literacy practices, although further developmental work is still needed for future research.

Abstract:

Today, information and communication technology is not only for professional use, but also for private tasks. In this thesis, the use of such technology for managing family information flow is investigated. Busy family life today, with school, work and leisure activites, makes coordination and synchronisation a burden. In what way cell-phones and Internet provides a support for those tasks is investigated, together with proposals for future technology.

The problem with coordination and synchronisation were found to be managed by a bulletin board placed at a central point at home. Besides the bulletin board, we found that calendars, shopping lists, and to-do lists are important. The families we investigated in field studies were all intensive users of both Internet and cell-phones.

Since the bulletin board played such an important role in the family life, we equipped families with cameras to be able to track what happened at those places with help of photo diaries. The field studies revealed that each family had their own unconscious procedure to manage the flow of notes on the bulletin board.

With technology, new problem will emerge. We investigated how notes on typical family bulletin boards may be visualised on a computer screen, and compared click-expand, zoom-pan and bifocal interfaces. The click-expand interface was substantially faster for browsing, and also easier to use.

An advantage of information and communication technology is that it may provide possibilities for multiple interfaces to information, and not only different terminals but also from different places. At home, a digital refrigerator door or a mobile web tablet; at work or at school, a conventional computer; when on the move, a cell-phone or a PDA. System architecture for these possibilities is presented.

Report code: LiU-TEK-LIC-2004:39.

Abstract:
碩士
長庚大學
資訊管理研究所
95
Due to the rapid growth of internet activities, online social networks have been emerging drastically in our digital lives. As online virtual communities are consolidating one after another, BBS (Bulletin Board System) has been a well-known online virtual community. In this research, we used the Taiwan’s largest Bulletin Board System, PTT system, as an example to understand the social relationship of the on-line virtual community. We chose 11 random samples from PPT and developed a computer program to collect online interactions from 1 July, 2006 to 28 February, 2007. According to the analysis, we found many distributions, including the number of posted articles and the times of articles’ responses, have power-low property: Most articles are posted by a small number of people, and most articles are responded by a small number of people. Furthermore, we transformed bipartite network into user network and article network. We found that the user and article networks have the small-world property: that all have the low pathlengths and high clustering coefficients.

Abstract:
碩士
中原大學
資訊工程研究所
106
This thesis aims at classifying unlabeled articles on data streams. Our approach mainly adopts the analysis of labeled articles to find the terms for text classification. Based on the techniques for sequential pattern mining, we further propose the method for mining consecutive word sequences (or called phrases). One word may be connected with the neighboring words in its context to form various phrases with distinct semantics. Therefore, we rectify the number of occurrences for each phrase to avoid the overestimation due to the duplicate counting on the phrases with overlapping segments. For each particular label, mining its set of articles will obtain a collection of frequent phrases (called the potential dictionary). By comparison with the other dictionaries, the collection of key phrases (called the feature dictionary) for each label are then derived. Finally, the text classifier for each label is constructed accordingly. Due to the nature of data streams on social articles, in the potential dictionary the amount of distinct phrases and their frequencies will increase day by day. Too big feature dictionary is harmful to the classification efficiency and accuracy. We therefore apply the lossy counting and incremental learning techniques to dynamically adapt the dictionary size and classification performance. Experimental data are collected from the articles of PTT BBS from 2012 to 2017. In the experiment on static data, the classification accuracy grows as the increase of the training data. Furthermore, the experiment on dynamic data shows that our approach can achieve more than 90% accuracy.

The cloud computing applications are also becoming increasingly popular. For example, Google has launched many of Software as a Service(SaaS). Cloud computing App and mobile App will for sure affect people''s lives and works in the future. One of the benefits of mobile Apps is that it is more flexible in design. The other is that it is easy for mobile App to incorporate with the functions built in mobile device. In order to explore the convenience of the integration of an Android App and built-in functions of mobile device, we developed a system for practical analysis. We developed an auction bulletin board system based on Google App Engine with Android App as its user interface. The features of auction buyers in the bulletin board system include the purchase of goods and checking orders. Seller features include new merchandise, checking product information, modifying the product information, removing the product information, querying orders, modifying orders, deleting orders, modifying personal information. The App provides the functions: adding selling goods to the cloud auction bulletin board. The system that we developed could provide the users who have Google accounts with the function of message bulletin board. GAE uses the object-oriented data store, so it is more suitable to use the data class diagram to design data model than Entity Relationship Diagram(ERD). In addition, since mobile App is mainly to provide users with a friendly way to operate, the designer should spend more time on the phase of user interface design, especially the interactions between users and system.

This study collected articles from the “Japan_Travel” forum in PTT Bulletin Board System (BBS) and analyzed what topics people often care about when traveling to Japan or what special sightseeing spots they often visit through text mining technology. This study used R language to write data mining program, and automatically captured the articles of PTT Japan travel forum. After collecting a total of 7001 articles from 2017 to 2018, we conducted Chinese word segmentation through text mining. Then, we draw a word cloud to explore the words commonly used by PTT BBS users and used the TF-IDF and LDA Gibbs method to sort out 10 topics. We also analyzed the relevance of the keywords in these topics. In the end, we found that PTT BBS users often discuss the transportation planning and scheduling of Japanese tourism. In the future, this study may provide the tourism industry to understand the tourism needs of Taiwanese and increase business opportunities.

With the M-R model, we put emphasis on the emotions of the senders who spread the words on the internet and define personal motivations and environmental factors as antecedent, sense of vitual community and flow experience as consequences of positive emotions. And personal motivations comprise sharing motives, approval motives and interaction motives, environmental factors comprise internet anonymity/convenience and platform mechanism. The research results after LISREL analysis are as follows: 1. The stronger the sharing motives and interaction motives, the stronger the positive emotions of the senders while he is spreading the eWOM. 2. There is no stronge relationship between approval motives and the positive emotions of the senders while he is spreading the eWOM. 3. Abstract:
碩士
國立臺灣大學
資訊工程學研究所
99
Depression is now an important disease in human society, while many people have this problem without being aware of it. Since people like to post their diary or vent emotions on the web, detect depression by texts should be a worthwhile topic. The goal of this thesis is to design a classification system that determines whether a person is a potential candidate for depression given the texts written by the person. To solve this problem, we propose to use a “two-stage” classifier with supervised learning method. The first stage determines whether the target is negative-emotion or not, and if it is, the second stage further determines whether it is clinical depression or just ordinary sadness. All of our training data come from PTT bulletin board system, and TF-IDF values of words is used as the basic features for classification. The cross validation accuracy of the two stages are 96.17% and 81.86% respectively. In addition, for the second stage, we further consider time information, define a temporal feature to be a time-term pair, and result in 2.65% improvement when these temporal features are added. It shows that saying one word in different time may represent different tendencies (clinical depression or ordinary sadness). We also found that time information works especially when obvious terms are not available, since lots of depression people in real world do not speak obvious terms, we can expect the effect of time information when the system is in reality use. To see the consistency between system and human judgment, a user study has been conducted. It shows that our system performs better in detecting major depression than in detecting moderate or minor depression. In the end, we demonstrate an explanation way to improve the efficiency of human judgment without losing accuracy, and a user study proved the effect.

Many users in Taiwan built the fast and real-time disaster information reporting system, tracing systems and food logistic system by mean of Plurk, Twitter, Facebook, Google map and other tools. This information system, Morakot network disaster center, was built by the Internet users along with many so-called information volunteers devoted themselves 24 hours a day in order to collect and provide the most updated information. In the case of PTT (PTT Bulletin Board System), it made maximum use of the information to form a tangible action. It recruited the volunteers and call for people to donate hundreds of tons of supplies for disaster relief via their BBS successfully. Due to the characters and advantages of Internet network including real-time response, convenience in transferring information, it effectively assisted the government relief for catastrophe caused by Morakot and played an important role in the rescue activity. Therefore, this study is to investigate the aspects of integrated relationships and operation from government system and civil society, and the main issues are summarized as follows. The understanding of functions and impact of BBS by the public. The perception and views from the public for the contribution of BBS during Morakot relief. The comparisons of BBS rescue information system and government relief system. Abstract:
碩士
國立中興大學
中國文學系所
102
Since the beginning of the research on Boy’s love (BL) in 1999, the readership researches have come up with a clear profile of it. The objects of the research are the BL fictions on the board of BL and BB-Love on PTT which refers to the electronic bulletin board of National Taiwan University. The research stars with the poll of “The Favorite Match of 2008” on BL board. Furthermore, it investigates the rendering of BL fictions from 2008 to 2013 and tries to identify the characteristics of BL literature. In chapter two, the result of the poll is analyzed and possible reasons for the nomination of the works are proposed based on narratology. In chapter three, the BL fictions on BB-Love board are analyzed according to Propp''s functions of the folktale and their characteristics are identified. From the aspect of subculture, the author proposes the erotic features of BL works and offers examples of narratives in chapter four. It provides that BL works tend to focus on the depiction of the interaction and details between the protagonists. Thus, it guarantees the readers’ imagination of love and relationship. Short BL fictions especially emphasize the procedure of “meet, Interact, then confess.” BL fictions emphasize on the relationship and sex between males. It’s also the representation of “Folk Devils.” Through the symbol of BL and sex as well as the sensation of the same sex and heterosexual hegemony, BL fictions pursue an artificial story telling—the accomplishment of love and sex. It conveys the idea that there is nothing more important than love. It’s a resistance of the mainstream’s oppression toward the exploration and demonstration of female’s sensation. It also reflects the self-contradiction and self-identification that the female encounter in their relationships. Meanwhile, the phenomenon of crossover writing and genre-mixture are both detected in BL fictions. For example, the wording and the plot of BL fictions tend to assimilate pure literature or LGBT fiction. What’s more, the plot might mix with other literature genres such as supernatural fiction, detective fiction, or science-fiction.

Yi-HsiuLin and 林怡秀. "Cancer Stories Online — Discourse Analysis of Self-Introduction Postings by Cancer Patients in a Taiwanese Bulletin Board System." Thesis, 2013. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/bk7xwv.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士
國立成功大學
外國語文學系碩博士班
101
The Internet is an important contemporary channel that allows people to find information and create social networks. With the universality of Internet use, searching for medical information online is a trend (Diaz et al. 2002). Many health-related topics, such as cancer, which are not typically discussed openly in social conversation, are discussed online because of the anonymity granted to participants. In modern society, cancer is perceived as a serious disease and often leads patients to feel helpless. Being diagnosed with cancer and its subsequent treatment are stressful events (Merckaert et al. 2010). While cancer patients need is medical treatment, they also require support from others. However, concern about others’ reactions and the fear of being treated differently or stigmatized (Hilton at al. 2009), may lead cancer patients to feel embarrassed about acknowledging their identity as cancer patients in face-to-face communication. Communicating online is a practical vehicle for patients to express themselves wholly. Understanding a cancer patient’s psychosocial character is important because their psychological state can act as predictors of their quality of life (Parker et al. 2003). Thus, the present study aims to have a better understanding of cancer patients' psychosocial characteristics by examining their accounts of illness experiences posted on Internet forums. The linguistic features were first examined and then the psychosocial characteristics reflected within the linguistic features are further discussed. The online social medium under investigation in the present study is a Taiwanese Bulletin Board System named KDD (a pseudonym) which is the most famous and widely used one in Taiwan at present. The data examined in the present study, self-introduction posting, is collected from its cancer-related board (‘cancer board’ or ‘KDD cancer board’ hereafter) whose members are mostly cancer patients (‘patient members’ hereafter) and relatives and friends of cancer patients (‘non-patient members’ hereafter). The self-introduction postings which are usually the first posting from members in the cancer board or their first time to introduce themselves officially contain cancer patients’ personal basic information, experiences from the time they received their cancer diagnosis to treatment processes and expression of emotions. In total, 58 self-introduction postings by cancer patients were collected. These were posted between October 29, 2005 and June 29, 2012. Empirical discourse analysis was employed to analyze the self-introduction postings. After investigation, three linguistic features are found: (1) 84% of patient members spontaneously disclosed their age in the content of their self-introduction postings, either age at the time of posting or age at the time of their cancer diagnosis. The linguistic pattern of age-disclosure can be divided into six types: stative, prospective, retrospective, listing, direct and indirect. Listing and direct formats are termed as ‘neutral pattern for age-disclosure’ in the present study which made up 53% of all types of age-disclosure formats. The other 47% are termed as ‘non-neutral pattern for age-disclosure’ which consisted of stative, prospective, retrospective and indirect format. (2) Patient members tended to provide descriptions of a sense of normalcy and satisfaction with their lives prior to the cancer diagnosis. The satisfaction they mentioned was derived from a number of factors. These included a healthy lifestyle, good physical condition, promising job, good life and educational background. Apart from these, they also provided descriptions about their counter-expectation to the cancer diagnosis which involved two concepts: having no family history of cancer and the unexpected membership in the KDD cancer board. (3) More than half (55%) of the patient members ended their self-introduction postings with words for encouragement which can be classified into three types. The first type contained words with the meaning of praying and blessing, like ‘希望/hope,’ ‘願/wish’ and ‘祝/bless’ and the second type included the phrase ‘加油/go for it’. The third type contained encouraging words. The feature of age-disclosure showed that being young (in the age group of 20 to 29) is the social characteristic of all members of the cancer board, including patient members and non-patient members. Based on their being young and the above three linguistic features, we forward three arguments with regard to patient members’ psychosocial characteristics: (1) Even though they are not medical professionals they intuitively know the importance of age in medical contexts. (2) They had difficulties in accepting their cancer diagnosis as reflected by their description of a normal and good life prior to the cancer diagnosis. Moreover, they even resist to the cancer diagnosis as supported by the following three viewpoints. First, getting cancer at such a young age runs contrary to the normative expectation of physical health development. Second, presenting their own age when expressing anger about getting cancer strongly suggests that their age is a contributing factor to their anger (e.g. ‘Why me? I am only 27’). Third, the use of evaluative adverb, such as ‘only,’ when disclosing their own age (e.g. ‘I am only 27’) further emphasizes their vehement rejection of their cancer diagnosis. (3) They were in need of mutual support as reflected by their participation in KDD cancer board and their provision of words for encouragement. Since young cancer patients are the most frequent users of the cancer board, it provides them with an exclusive space to fulfill their psychosocial needs. A dedicated forum also functions as an invaluable corpus of patient voices that can inform health professionals of the needs and concerns of young cancer patients. Moreover, it can equally provide an efficient vehicle for the dissemination of cancer treatment education by health professionals. The present study enhances the understanding of age in medical contexts in the following three directions: Age is (1) a point of reference of a patient’s disease trajectory, (2) a point of reference of a person’s life course, and (3) the reason for denial when a patient is faced with a disease that is foreign to his/her expectation because it violates the assumed normal physical development.
