Full textBlack hole-like spacetimes in a cosmological background are studied within the Einsteins general relativity theory framework, in particular a mass varying generalization of the McVitties spacetime. We exhibit some of the resulting spacetimes as limit cases of the generalized McVittie solution. We discuss the standard definition of black hole and event horizon, and we address the difficulties in aplying it in dynamical situations, another definitions for horizons are explored. The apparent horizon concept is used to locate black holes and cosmological horizons. Solutions for apparent horizons in Schwarzschild-de Sitter, McVittie, and generalized McVittie geometries are shown.

Abstract: In the past few years, black hole oscillations became a very interesting research area mainly due to the possibility of proving the existence of such celestial bodies through the gravitational radiation emitted by them. In this work, the study of the propagation of different kinds of incident waves on a black hole is presented under the mathematical point of view. Initially, elements of differential geometry are used to establish the mathematical structure of gravitation and, under certain hypotheses, a family of solutions to the Einstein equations is obtained, describing the black holes (Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstr¨om, Kerr and Kerr-Newman). Teukolsky equations, which govern the black hole perturbations, are obtained with the aid of Newman-Penrose formalism and transformed to a one-dimensional wave equation. According to certain boundary conditions, solutions of this equation for complex frequencies are determined from different semi-analytic methods

Full textIn the present work, we have established the connections between black-hole physics and thermodynamics, searching for similarities and differences between these two branches of physicxs, which might look quite far apart. Such links were first sought for and established during the 1970s, thanks to the pioneering work of S. Hawking and Jacob D. Bekenstein, among others, and continuously developed in the following years, notably in the last decade. Hawking's major achievement was the prediction, from arguments based on Quantum Field Theory, that black holes radiate with a thermal spectrum, even the uncharged and nonrotating ones (the Schwarzschild black holes). Bekenstein's biggest merit was to find the link between classical thermodynamical laws and processes involving black holes. In this work, we started with Schwarzschild and Kerr-Newman black holes, working out their general properties, as well as the problem of particle motion in such spacetimes, so that we could briefly discuss the issue of energy extraction from black holes, as established by Penrose and others. Once the general features of these black holes were known, it was possible to derive the black-hole thermodynamics, due to a simple relation between black-hole entropy and area. Expressions for the black-hole temperature were then easily obtained, in perfect agreement with Hawking's own derivation, not considered here. With temperatures at hand, heat capacities could be thoroughly examined, showing intrinsic properties of black holes, not shared by classical systems. The question of thermodynamic stability of black holes arose naturally from heat capacity analysis, and we have analysed black holes in both the microcanonical and canonical ensembles, in the light of Poincaré's linear series method, completing the current work. Chapters 1 and 2 deal with the Schwarzschild and Kerr-Newman solutions, respectively, deriving their general features and working out particle motion in these geometries. Chapter 3 establishes the links between black-hole physics and thermodynamics, being of crucial importance for the subsequent chapters. Chapter 4 provides an extensive study of black-hole temperatures and heat capacities, paving the way for the last chapter, Chapter 5, concerning to thermodynamic stability of black holes.

Full textIn this work we have constructed new solutions, with axial or spherical symmetry, to the induced gravitational field equations within a Randall-Sundrum type brane world scenario, where a 3-brane with cosmological constant is embedded in a 5-dimensional space-time called bulk. For the spherical case with negative cosmological constant, we have found a family of solutions in an anti-de Sitter brane, where each member of the family is different from another when C is fixed. With a fixed C we have black holes or wormholes. In this same case, with spherical symmetry, we have obtained wormhole solutions in a de Sitter brane. In the same context, for the axially symmetric case, metrics asymptotically anti-de Sitter and de Sitter were built. Optics features, like rotation of polarization vector, have been studied. These features showed some differences between brane worlds, a theory of modified gravity, and the General Relativity.

The discovery of thermodynamic behavior of black holes in the context of quantum field theory in curved spacetimes has given rise to several issues, among them where and what are the degrees of freedom associated to their entropy. In this dissertation we study this topic proposing that, if not all, some of this entropy is due to the entanglement between degrees of freedom, internal and external to the hole, of quantum fields present in the spacetime.

Full textIn this dissertation, classical and semi-classical effects in quasi-extreme spacetimes are explored. In the class of geometries treated here, a static region between two horizons is considered, in such a way that these horizons are very close and their surface gravities are very small. This quasi-extreme limit appears in several contexts of interest, such as asymptotically de Sitter black holes, wormholes and black holes in universes with compact spatial section. In the developed work, wormholes connecting two regions bounded by cosmological horizons are studied in detail. Once some of the classical properties of these structures are characterized, semi-classical effects are explored. The proposed quantum treatment naturally leads to a thermodynamic characterization associated to the trapping horizons present in the geometry. We specifically consider thermal properties associated to a scalar field in the spacetimes of interest. A review of Hayward\'s formalism is presented, with a proper adaptation to important space-times. Wormholes in the near extreme regime are discussed in detail.
