In the sphere of end-of-life care, the fear of being a burden on loved ones is a significant factor in patients seeking assisted suicide or euthanasia. The claims of altruism and love that support such decisions are misplaced, and the possibility of being a burden must be reimaged within a proper anthropology. Allowing oneself to be a burden is a significant aspect not only of loving human relationships, but of a human nature that is essentially dependent and created in the image of God.

Abstract Caregiving can foster increased purpose and mastery, but also anxiety, depression, and suicide ideation. Mechanisms whereby caregiving impacts suicide risk in dementia caregivers are not well characterized. The Interpersonal Theory of Suicide posits that stressors such as caregiving increase suicide risk by producing feelings of not belong to valued relationships/groups (low belonging, loneliness) and like one is a burden on others (perceived burden). Given that caregivers by definition are caring for others, they may be protected against perceived burden. This presentation will exami

Parental Alcohol Misuse (PAM) can negatively affect children’s physical and mental health, and other outcomes including educational attainment and behaviour. Effects can be acute when experienced in conjunction with other adverse experiences such as domestic abuse, marital conflict, and deprivation. PAM is a common feature in child protection and care proceedings, and places a considerable burden on social services.

Abstract:
On September 3, 2018, two career Fire Lieutenants and two career Firefighters suffered burn injuries as a result of a residential structure fire. On September 10, 2018, personnel representing several other fire departments in the area, including a member of the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) Advisory Board visited the fire scene to document the incident and collect material samples from the structure. The narrative and analysis presented in this report rely on the photographs and evidence collected on September 10, 2018, dispatch transcript [5] and videos recorded at the time of the inc

Full text
Abstract:
The technical goal of the Dual Array Project was to develop new technology for non-invasive mapping of buried pipelines, down to depths of 10 meters or more, using modern electromagnetic sensors and signal processing. A major proposed innovation in the work was the integration of the sensor arrays and software into a mobile system capable of mapping underground utility networks (and other buried infrastructure) efficiently over large areas. Ultimately, the goal is to have a non-invasive system that can produce an accurate infrastructure map of an entire urban or suburban utility network in dig

Reviews the available sensors for monitoring hazardous ground movement. Our review was limited to airborne and spaceborne sensors for access, performance, and productivity considerations. It was observed that certain ground movement is comparatively localized, e.g., earthquake faulting, while other activity may extend for thousands of kilometers, e.g., frost heave. Accordingly, we have considered two operating modes for the sensor-platform system, namely, site-by-site and continuous corridor. To determine the suitability of the candidate sensors for pipeline monitoring, we have assessed the ex

Munitions and other objects buried near the Earth’s surface can often be recognized in infrared imagery because their thermal and radiative properties differ from the surrounding undisturbed soil. However, the evolution of the thermal signature over time is subject to many complex interacting processes, including incident solar radiation, heat conduction in the ground, longwave radiation from the surface, and sensible and latent heat exchanges with the atmosphere. This complexity makes development of robust classification algorithms particularly challenging. Machine-learning algorithms, althou

Farmers used to learn about new scientific research and knowledge relevant to their practices through direct interaction with someone introducing them to new methods. Now farmers can directly and swiftly receive information about agricultural innovation on their phones. But digital information is also likely to be misunderstood, ignored or buried under a sea of other notifications.

Abstract:
The objective of this program is to advance the state-of-the-art of electromagnetic induction transducer technology to demonstrate the ability to perform an ultrasonic inspection of steel pipes with sensors separated from the pipe wall by a large distance which may be filled with an irregular layer of tar or other corrosion preventing coating. Thus, a direct assessment of a pipeline's integrity can be achieved from a single ultrasonic sensor placed on top of a partially excavated pipeline while it is still covered with a thick tar coating.
