Starting from a passage in the treatise De universali reali by Jean de Maisonneuve (Johannes de Nova Domo), where Jean de Maisonneuve denounces John Buridan as a materialist, the article looks for textual evidence that would support or otherwise refute this claim in Buridan’s works on natural philosophy. In particular, the article analyzes Buridan’s discussion of universal knowledge in the final redactions of his commentaries on Aristotle’s Physica and De anima, which turn out to complement each other. Here, Buridan asks if something extended and material can have universal knowledge. Against

AbstractThis article provides the first edition of a series of eight Quaestiones de secretis mulierum by (or ascribed to) John Buridan († ca. 1360). The introduction discusses the manuscript tradition and the relationship between Buridan’s quaestiones and pseudo-Albertus Magnus’ treatise De secretis mulierum, concluding that Buridan’s questions constitute a genuine commentary on pseudo-Albert’s text. Specifically, the eight questions by (or ascribed to) Buridan seem to be an extensive elaboration on the preface (prologus) and on the first chapter of pseudo-Albert’s text.

AbstractThe so-called 'Buridan school' at the University of Paris has obtained a considerable fame in the history of science. Pierre Duhem had made some bold claims about the achievements by John Buridan and his 'pupils' Nicole Oresme and Albert of Saxony in the field of medieval dynamics. Although generally, Duhem's views are no longer accepted, the idea of a 'Buridan school' has survived. This idea is, however, misleading. John Buridan, Nicole Oresme and Albert of Saxony should rather be viewed as members of an intellectual network. While interested in similar philosophical themes and unders

Abstract William of Ockham and John Buridan provide different accounts of the distinction between formal and material consequences. Some consequences – in particular, enthymemes – that Ockham would classify as formal would be classified as material by Buridan. This paper explains this taxonomical discrepancy. It identifies the root of the discrepancy not in a difference between Ockham’s and Buridan’s notions of propositional hylomorphism but rather in Ockham’s endorsement of relational characterizations of consequences.

Abstract What is at stake, philosophically, in the disagreement between Ockham and Buridan is whether there is simple (or material) supposition in the mental language or not. The key difference is that Ockham’s theory allows for the possibility of use/mention ambiguities within mental language, while Buridan’s approach, whatever it is exactly, does not.

The Medieval philosopher John Buridan (14th century) develops a complex kind of semantics based on the distinction between the context of utterance and the context of evaluation in order to establish the truth conditions of propositions. It states that the distinction between the context of utterance and the context of evaluation results in a satisfactory approach of the truth conditions of future contingent propositions. In the last 30 years there has been growing interest in and a greater appreciation of the unique contributions that medieval authors have made to the history of logic. In this thesis, we compare and contrast the modal logics of Robert Kilwardby and John Buridan and explore how their two conceptions of modality relate to and differ from modern notions of modal logic. We develop formal reconstructions of both authors' logics, making use of a number of different formal techniques. In the case of Robert Kilwardby we show that using his distinction between per se and per accidens modalities, he is

This work intends to investigate the way of the medieval author John Buridan answers the problem of the reference of non-denotative terms, that is, terms which refer to non-existent objects, within the medieval terminist theory, specially the Supposition Theory. It focuses on one special case of non-existent objects: chimaera. The buridanian theory answers the question of the meaning and reference of non-denotative terms making use of the semantic complexity of language and avoiding the postulation of a special type of existence of these objects.<br>Este trabalho pretende investigar como o aut

The thesis began with an attempt to name some of these universals and from them to distill some "clear and distinct"² ideas about the making of architecture. The present test program was developed to assess the relative service life provided by various permanent reference cell designs. The natural tendency for the potential of a Cu-CuSO4 reference cell to vary must also be considered. Some causes of this variation may be due to the age of the cell and differences in manufacturing. Four tests (CuSO4 leaching, chloride leaching, dry-out tendencies and “real-world” testing) were performed on six permanent reference
