Abstract:
In the last 30 years there has been growing interest in and a greater appreciation of the unique contributions that medieval authors have made to the history of logic. In this thesis, we compare and contrast the modal logics of Robert Kilwardby and John Buridan and explore how their two conceptions of modality relate to and differ from modern notions of modal logic. We develop formal reconstructions of both authors' logics, making use of a number of different formal techniques. In the case of Robert Kilwardby we show that using his distinction between per se and per accidens modalities, he is

This work intends to investigate the way of the medieval author John Buridan answers the problem of the reference of non-denotative terms, that is, terms which refer to non-existent objects, within the medieval terminist theory, specially the Supposition Theory. It focuses on one special case of non-existent objects: chimaera. The buridanian theory answers the question of the meaning and reference of non-denotative terms making use of the semantic complexity of language and avoiding the postulation of a special type of existence of these objects.<br>Este trabalho pretende investigar como o aut

The thesis began with an attempt to name some of these universals and from them to distill some "clear and distinct"² ideas about the making of architecture. In fact, the late Anglo-Saxon period shows a great deal of diversity in burial practice. One of these diverse forms of burial is so-called “charcoal burial”, in which the body or coffin is laid on or under a layer of wood charcoal. This thesis examines the possible symb

Burial spaces within the City of Pretoria have become inert, fenced-off islands – restricting death rituals and their intrinsic value to society. The lack of urban burial space within Pretoria has resulted in the propagation of urban sprawl, and the bereaved are required to bury the deceased in cemeteries outside of the city. Burial spaces were once part of the range of vital public facilities within historical cities, and death rituals are argued to be central to cultural and individual identities. This thesis identifies and develops the discourse of darkness in the Gospel of John. It approaches the theme as both a textual motif, Johannine σκοτία, and a discussion of negative elements within the text, viewed from a feminist perspective. Scholars have long considered the aspect of light, φῶς, in the Gospel and Jesus’ characterisation as ‘the light.’ The motif of darkness, however, has been relatively underexplored and an association made between Jesus, his burial, and the theme of σκοτία, rarer still. Mangroves and saltmarshes are ‘blue carbon’ ecosystems and studies on their carbon (C) dynamics have become highly topical. In these coastal wetlands, the aboveground biomass sequesters C and allocates C to belowground roots. A significant portion of aboveground biomass is transferred to the sediment as litterfall. Belowground roots and their exudates are ultimately decomposed by microbial communities. As the product of root decomposition, CO2 is released from the sediment surface and organic C (OC) contributes to sediment C burial. In addition, the decomposition of litter and sediment organic
