Abstract:
Abstract Kenneth Burke’s dramatistic pentad can be understood as a pentadic model of semiotic analysis. Dyadic, triadic, and other relational models offer valuable benefits, but Burke’s pentad is especially useful and relevant given its focus on both action and motive/purpose. Here we will look in more detail at some of these benefits of Burke’s schema understood in this semiotic light, and then we’ll apply the model to a few examples of object analysis. If it is true that Burke’s pentad works in this way as well as we think it does, then fruitful ground exists here for other researchers as well, particularly since Burke’s pentadic model features much less in the field of semiotics proper than do more common dyadic and triadic based models.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Burke’s Pentad (Act, Agent, Agency, Scene and Purpose) is a creative idea generation guide for dramatism (or dramatistic framework). Its utilization to probe, often engenders a process of stochastic combination, whereby a vista of multiple ideational variations emerge in one’s mind, from which an appropriate subset could be selected and implemented. This usually affords inspiration, creative flow and energy that are pivotal for success in drama as much as in visual communication. However, there is prevalent unawareness of the potentials of the Pentad model as a veritable structure to creating innovative ideas in art and design. Therefore, this paper focused on the potentiality of the Pentad for creating and or analyzing ideas on form generation for pedagogical, practical, or theoretical purpose in graphic communication design. Towards this end, a triangulation of methods: critical-historical-analytic examination, artistic exploration, and content analysis are employed. The paper introduced the reader to the need for a strategy to generate new ideas, stimulate creative thinking, and enhance self-motivation in visual expression for structural and human development. Furthermore, it highlighted the processes of creativity, and form generation for material culture development. Also, the paper discussed the Pentad and its utilization for generating new ideas in art/design. It was found that the Pentad is indispensable in generating ideas for creating, interpreting and teaching visual form. The paper ended with the need for visual communicators to be acquainted by use of the Pentad for creative ideas to generate product with satisfactory outcomes.

Abstract:
Writing online narratives of postpartum psychosis allows both self-analysis and catharsis and can also be viewed as a type of sociopolitical expression. Eight narratives posted on the Action on Postpartum Psychosis website were analyzed using Burke’s narrative analysis. This method focuses on a pentad of key elements of story: scene, act, purpose, agent, and agency. What drives this narrative analysis is the identification of problematic areas referred to as ratio imbalances between any two of these five terms. The ratio imbalance between Agent and Act appeared most often in these eight narratives. The agent was the mother and the act most often was either her hallucinations or delusions. The second most frequent area of tension was between Scene and Agent. Problematic scenes for the agent (mother) involved admission to the psychiatric ward, entering the electroconvulsive therapy room, or nighttime. These ratio imbalances pinpoint places where clinicians can target specific interventions.

Like a real-life drama, street art activity is not only understood than mere actualization. Their activities can also be understood as a process of idea communicating, the need for acceptance of communal / community, as well as his message can be received by the community well. To that end, as well as the stage play, they play the role / each character to achieve its objectives in the activities of street art. What stronger motivation behind their characters in Dramatism of strategy in ideas pouring through the street art is an interesting thing to be understood by using the pentad analysis - Kenneth Burke. Pentad analysis outlines the five aspects of human behavior that act, agent, scene, agency, and purpose, like the drama in real life. This study reveals that the motivation behind the idea of pouring through the activities of street art which they do, the other to have the support of people in their community environment, support from the community, as well as social criticism as a reflection of the circumstances surrounding them. Abstract:
During crises (major events characterised by uncertainty, urgency and threat), society must make sense of rapidly unfolding events. This happens mainly through narrativising—depicting a setting, characters and a meaningful sequence of events and actions unfolding over time. In the early months of the pandemic, UK general practice shifted from face-to-face consultations to a remote-by-default model (telephone, video or e-consultation). This shift was initially widely accepted by press and public, but support waned after a politician declared that the change would be permanent. We invoke Burke’s dramatistic pentad of act, scene, agent, agency and purpose to theorise findings from a detailed analysis of media coverage of the remote-by-default policy and reactions to it. We consider the 12 weeks from March to June 2020 (first lockdown, when remote-by-default services had just been introduced) and 1 week from late July 2020 (following the ministerial announcement). The initial introduction of remote consulting had strong narrative coherence in which all parts of the pentad were balanced: scene (a deadly virus threatening the country) aligned with act (lockdown, including avoiding face-to-face appointments unless essential), agents (the National Health Service and digital technology as heroic macro-actors), agency (general practitioners ‘deployed’) and purpose (to control the pandemic). The later period, however, was characterised by a mismatch between scene (a country emerging from lockdown and resuming normal life), act (imposition of the remote model), agent (a politician known for his enthusiasm for technology), agency (top-down directive) and purpose (modernisation). Whereas media narratives in the first period aligned with the genre of heroic adventure (suggesting a worthy battle, bravely fought), those of the second had characteristics of farce (something both comic and grotesque). We conclude that close reading of media narratives may surface potential misalignments between policy decisions and the context in which they must be implemented.

Abstract:
We investigate the case of the Economic Commission for Latin America in Brazil to discuss how modernization theory was mobilized to influence management education. The theories formulated by the Economic Commission for Latin America formed the basis of the courses it offered on development administration and management and the public administration schools it helped create. The theories from the Economic Commission for Latin America were contrary to US interests and to the modernization theory tenets developed by US scholars. The Alliance for Progress, launched in 1961 by US President J.F. Kennedy, was a project informed by modernization theory aimed to foster development in Latin America, and to contain the spread of Communism after the Cuban Revolution. The Alliance for Progress mobilized a network of US-controlled institutions that invested in management education and in an interpretation of development administration and management based on modernization theory that confronted the Economic Commission for Latin America. We make use of Burke’s Pentad to articulate the interactions among (asymmetrical) players at different levels of analysis and along the historical period investigated. We treat science as literature, and we present our analysis in a dramatistic narrative to promote reflexive management learning. We show that US-led investment in management education increased considerably after the launch of the Alliance for Progress, and that it lasted throughout the 1960s.

Abstract:
Populist political parties have become a key feature of the European political landscape. In addition to claiming to be identified with the people, many of these parties are characterized by exclusionary narratives which centre on groups such as immigrants and religious minorities, a feature considered by many analysts as specific to right-wing populism. Left-wing populism is frequently defined as sharing right-wing populism’s identification with the people and its anti-elitism but not its attachment to exclusionary narratives. This study joins other recent work in challenging that assumption, providing evidence for the contention that anti-elitism is also a form of excluding populist communication. Using Van Dijk’s methodological approach to the analysis of the discursive positioning of ‘Us/Them’ and elements of Burke’s dramatistic pentad, this article examines the party and electoral communication of Podemos, the self-described, left-wing populist Spanish political party, from its foundation in January 2014 up until the close of the European Union parliamentary election campaign in May 2014. The study shows that an exclusionary narrative was integral to Podemos’ campaign communication in that a group of people identified as the caste ( la casta) constituted the stigmatized out-group in contraposition to the in-group of the ‘people’ which included immigrants and the leaders of Podemos. This suggests that populist parties or politicians of all ideological stripes may be characterized by exclusionary and stigmatizing narratives.

We have studied the discoursive exchange in a forum -on the Moodle platform- in a course of Psychology and School (Portuguese Language Degree). This paper mainly introduce the analysis strategy that has been followed to study discourses exchanges . We performed three types of analysis. The first seeks to identify tematic content the Burkean pentad as organizar. The second and third were directed to identify the types and dynamics of exchange in the forum. The converging results of these analyzes suggest that the meaning of “being a teacher “ is dialogically constructed in discursive exchanges and focus on the teacher as an agent and as a mediator in the transmission of knowledge . Also appearing meanings about being good or bad teacher. Keywords: Professional Identity. Teacher Education. Entornos Formativos Virtuales.

Abstract:
Arte e Rua Abstract: The art manifestation in the pre-established and somewhat private spaces such as museums and galleries indicate thematic and public target defined by a territoriality. But what happens with the art manifestation on the streets? How is the question of territoriality established? Is it a form of multiterritoriality? How would the multiterritoriality of the art manifestation be configured on the streets of Ipatinga's downtown area in the State of Minas Gerais? In search of a possible answer, the purpose of this article is to identify the multiterritoriality of the art manifestation in the streets of the downtown area of Ipatinga city, especially in Praça da Biblia. It is a qualitative research whose method was observational, non-participant, carried out in the period 2016-2017. As a theoretical instrument for qualitative analysis, the Burkean pentade was used. The bibliography used presents brief interdisciplinary concepts that deal with art, monument, countermument, territory, multiterritoriality and the territorial formation process as a whole. The territory contextualisation in which the manifestation occurs allowed the multiterritoriality identification that occurs in the adaptation process of the art manifestation in the streets and the appropriation of this territory by the manifestations of public art in a cumulative form of diverse territorialities. Keywords: Multiterritoriality. Manifestation. Art and Street.

Abstract:
Looking into the definition of rhetoric in the digital space, one often encounters the view that rhetoric is too remote or too “ancient” to be used as a conceptual, theoretical or practical framework for researching digital media. However, a substantial body of contemporary media research applies the theory of rhetoric, using a modern conceptual apparatus (e.g. cognitive theories of metaphor). Based on Kenneth Burke’s model of the pentad, the article aims to show that media messages in the digital environment are based on the notion of the rhetorical situation and demonstrate that the rhetorical apparatus has a crucial role in discerning the ways to modify the discourse space in human-computer-human communication. The source of modification in the traditional model of a rhetorical situation is the interactive nature of communication in digital media and the fact that the recipient [agent a] is bestowed with the role of an active participant who can influence the content of the message. Thanks to the use of the rhetorical model of pentad, the argument goes that in contrast to traditional media, modifications in the model act 1 → agent → agency → act 2 are possible and they result from the inclusion of external participants [agent b] and changes in the ontological status of the digital medium from the role of an intermediary to an active participant in the communication process [agent c].

Abstract:
This essay discusses the significance of the unnatural narrative structure in Charlie Kaufman’s screenplay Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004). Oftentimes, the screenplay’s reverse chronology is studied as a backdrop to accentuate its thematic values of personal identity and memory. However, this study argued that the reverse narrative was caused by the protagonist’s self-redemption journey. To achieve this objective, two components of Kenneth Burke’s dramatism theory, dramatistic pentad and guilt-redemption cycle were utilized. The pentadic analysis explored the connection between the main characters’ actions and motives with the structure of the text while also interpreting the implication of its reverse narrative from the framework of guilt-redemption cycle. From the findings, the study affirms that the screenplay’s unnatural narrative structure i.e. reverse chronology integrally founded the narrative structure of the text by representing Joel’s regret in a sequence of guilt-redemption cycle. As a result, it showcases the versatility of dramatism theory as one of the analytical tools for narrative studies particularly on the unnatural narrative structure of screenplay texts.

Abstract:
As society and business is becoming more complex, the creation and management of knowledge attracts more attention. For intelligence research it offers an alternative perspective on the art and science of intelligence that challenges a previous dominance of strategy and decision-making theories. The article is based on semi-structured interviews with intelligence personnel in four different multinational companies. Through the use of Burke’s pentad this article gives an account of important challenges encountered by intelligence personnel in modern business organizations due to an increasing dependence on different knowledge processes. These challenges are summarized in four central tasks for knowledge activists; that is to initiate and focus knowledge creation, to reduce the time and cost needed for knowledge creation, to leverage knowledge creation initiatives throughout the corporation and to guide knowledge creation by the instigation of complementary reference points. By engaging in these types of activities intelligence workers are able to stage and influence different sorts of analytical conversations, where the insights from these conversations as reformed knowledge govern an evolving strategy in dispersed circumstances. Thus, intelligence workers fulfil their purpose, which in this perspective can be viewed as creating better business in whatever process they engage in.

Abstract:
We are pleased to offer another series of research articles within the area of intelligence studies in business. The articles represent as always a number of different approaches and problems. The article by Fatti and du Toit on competitive intelligence in the South African pharmaceutical industry confirms the idea that CI by now is a well-established field of interest in companies. The article goes on to propose a series of suggestions for how to improve the CI function for these companies. The article by Jenster and Solberg Søilen is a quantitative paper on the correlation between strategic planning and company performance for Chinese companies. The research confirms that the CI function is more important for company performance than the other variables and functions that were measured. The article by Momeni and Mehrafzoon identifies a number of key success factors for the CI function in the power plant industry in Iran. Seven factors are identified in the study. The article by Solberg Søilen is an overview of articles published in the Journal of Competitive Intelligence and Management and Competitive. The article shows where articles are from, what topics are most popular, what background authors have and to what extent they define future research. The article by Hoppe is about the methodological direction of intelligence studies, and is placed in the opinion section. By using Burk’s pentad the author brings a series of new perspectives to intelligence studies in general. We hope you will enjoy these quite different contributions.
