Full textSituated largely at the interior of the loop of river mouhoun, the south west of burkina faso, zone of the birrimians hills and the peneplain is a land of recent immigration marked by an unprecedented transformation of the naturel landscape. Access to the naturel ressources and exploitation of the environment are subjected to rivalry between the native populations and immigrants. In this context of rivalry the diversity of the social environmental practices emphasize the deteroration of the land (physical landscape). Comparative soil studies of the birrimians hills region and those from the west in the peneplain presents an opposition between socially controlled and non-controlled environment. In this region, due to lack of land, the natives have been practicing intensive farming for a long time. The social practices of the environment which for a long time permitted the natives bwa and marka to exploit rationally and durably their natural ressources and that under bad weather conditions are abandonned in the soils of the peneplain where the total absence of environmental social control make up a grave threat for the south west's alimentary and ecological security. The revaluation of these ancient agrarian practices and the stabilization of the peasant population will undoubtedly allow to practice a social control adapted to the environmental requirements of the south west of burkina faso

Full textGrounded on a field survey in jàa villages, located in South West Burkina Faso, this thesis aims at defining eligibility from the standing of two socio-spatial forms: the house and the road. The house appears to be a space of rivalries, which have been provoked by the creation of a new centre of power. It highlights the reform of kinship, but it also materializes the double metamorphose of virility in jàa society. This double metamorphose is characterized by the establishment of "erotic" relationships between men and women and by the monetarization of war virility. The road, a complementary and antagonistic socio-spatial form to the house, is the place which gives rise to these changes. It represents the disorder in the political hierarchies production process: it indicates the propensity of local election candidates to ritually create chaos during political meetings and it is the site from which the destabilization of power is introduced. As such, it informs of Blaise Compaoré's fall in October 2014. More broadly, it materializes the intrusion, seen as threatening, of Mossi migrants in villages and the role of roaming in the revolution of political and initiatory hierarchies. Thus, the house and the road compose a dyad, which allows to describe the transformations of political hierarchies in a West African society, following a topographic perspective. Yet, to design the geographical dimension of political hierarchies, it requires placing the mediation of religious beliefs and practices in the centre of the relations between humans and the territory, instead of considering an economical infrastructure of politics

Full textOver the last few years, Burkina Faso has witnessed a dramatic growth of mining activities. From the 90’s on, the state of Burkina Faso has initiated the liberalization of his mining sector. Henceforth, the state grants research permits and authorizations to private operators. Many international mining companies explore their concessions while - at the same time and sometimes the same place - thousands of West African gold seekers set up mining camps all over the country. The present doctoral thesis focusses on the southwest region of Burkina Faso, historically renowned for housing rich gold deposits. First, this study concentrates on the historical and cultural aspects of gold exploitation and trade. Then, it describes and analyzes the moral economy and way of life of the non-industrial gold miners. Finally, the investigations point out the interactions between the gold mining communities and a large range of exogenous actors: local inhabitants, local and central authorities, international and national mining companies. These relationships uncover the relative sociopolitical autonomy of the gold mining communities in relation to the “outside world”. These links extend from the local to the national and international spheres, demonstrating the complexity of understanding such a strategic field

Full textDue to globalization of trade and the need to fulfill the challenges raised by climate change and the energy crisis, African agricultures are required to grow new crops. Their insertion in productive spaces has been successful like the cashew nut in West Africa, or has encountered some setbacks as it is currently the case of jatropha across the region. These results have intensities, rationalities, forms and various trajectories, depending on the spaces in which they take place. Thus, within a country, some regions will be able to take hold of these crops whereas others won‘t and will reject it more or less rapidly. Understand the inner workings of success or failures in connection with their localization is a major issue to provide the best support to these changes. So, this PhD thesis questions the shapes and dynamics of agricultural innovation in terms of its territorial integration. Currently, the Innovation System (IS) concept provides a systematic analytical frame for innovation processes. But it is usually applied to national or sectorial levels; territorial dimension is rarely taken into account. The objective of this thesis is to build a territorial analysis of the innovation in a functionalist framework, identifying the functions that the IS and the territory must activate jointly for innovation to diffuse. This analytical framework has been built on the literature and on field observations, then it has been implemented on the cases of cashew nut and jatropha in the south-west region of Burkina Faso. The developed approach combines surveys, a spatial analysis of innovation and evaluation of the relations between IS and territories functioning. Results highlight synergies and blocking factors explaining the degree of adoption of innovation, such as the accessibility of the territory, its ability to exchange, its productive system, the legitimacy of its institutions, etc. They provide a means for understanding the dynamics of agricultural innovation as a process of successive interactions with the territory, and also highlighting the role of innovation in current territorial changes. The analytical framework provides also perspectives for a predictive approach to assess the future development of an innovation according to the characteristics of the territories. Finally, recommendations are made for localized and prioritized actions in order to improve the efficiency of agricultural innovation systems

Full textPanning for gold is a controversial issue that leaves no one indifferent; if for some it is a source of nuisance for others it represents a way to fight against poverty. To better understand the phenomenon, this study was conducted nearby three groups of actors in the rural commune of Gbomblora Department that are farmers, miners and agro-miners. Benchmarking shows that gold panning is not only a central element of the system of activities of farming households that contributes to the fight against poverty, but the practice of parallel gold panning also enables farmers to run their farms . The study also demonstrated that contrary to ideas that panning for gold are spaces of disorder and lawlessness, the activity is rather governed by a form of collective governance that ensures its operation despite some shortcomings. Keywords: gold panning, system of household activities, agriculture, integrated rural development, territory.

Full textWest Africa is prone to critical climate variability and since the 1970s has been experiencing a long period of drought whose impact on groundwater resources is little studied. This study focuses on the Kou catchment in Burkina Faso which holds a large groundwater resource that lies at the root of exceptional springs. This resource, essential to fulfill the populations’ needs, shows signs of depletion that raises a critical question: what is the share of climate and that of withdrawals in the depletion of the resource? To answer this question, we used statistical analysis methods and hydrogeological modeling. The statistical methods were applied to climatic, hydrometric and groundwater level time series to describe the groundwater’s response to climate forcing and to identify explanatory factors of the groundwater’s behaviour. The hydrogeological modeling overcame some of the statistical methods limitations by better heeding the spatial heterogeneity of the aquifer’s characteristics. Particularly, it revealed that pumping have significant impact on the resource. To sum up, rainfall deficits combined with growing pumping endanger the resource. Hence, sustainable management of the resource should be a critical issue to pay attention to

Full textHow landscape evolution, resources allocation for extensive livestock production systems, impact the current pastoral practices, taking into consideration that these landscapes are the result of past and current agricultural and pastoral practices. To answer this question, two contrasted territories characterised by different rates of land occupation (Ouara and Torokoro) were studied both located in the sub-wet zone (900-1000 mm precipitation) of the Burkina Faso savannas. Our landscape analysis is based on two spatial and temporal scales. On territories scale, landscape evolution was analysed through a diachronic approach. Landscape transformations modelling processed at three dates (1956, 1983 and 1998), showed the conversion trends in the type of land occupation. These landscape transformations are then matched with socio-economic dynamics to identify and point out the key factors of the landscape evolutions. At the scale of the station the evolution of plant biodiversity is studied through a synchronic approach which compares the floristic composition of pastures subjected to various types of pastoral pressures. The last part of the study compares herd’s mobility according the two different ecological environments. Determinants of pastoral mobility are suggested for daily and seasonal herding. A software application was developed under SIG to model the cattle movement. It is then possible to evaluate and study the herd’s presence on the various vegetation types and quantify the grazing pressure
