Grabowski, Radoslaw. "Fulachta Fiadh in County Cavan : A study of the use of archaeobotanical, geochemical and geophysical methods on burnt mounds in County Cavan, Ireland." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Miljöarkeologiska laboratoriet, 2008. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-61645.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims at investigating whether archaeobotanical investigations, combined with geochemical (phosphate) and geophysical (magnetic susceptibility) soil surveys, can provide valid data concerning the functional aspects of several burnt mounds detected in County Cavan, Ireland, during the realignment of a local road (N3 between Cavan Town and Belturbet). The results show that the methods can indeed be used to gain data concerning the formation, use and post-depositional aspects governing the nature of these sites. With the exception of one site (which is proven by the analyses not to represent “traditional” burnt mound activities) the sites display indications of animal produce processing as well as some sparse evidence for cereal based activities. The results are not entirely conclusive but indicate that an extended archaeobotanical, geochemical and geophysical investigation coupled with further analyses with methods belonging to environmental archaeology (such as palynology and insect analysis) may potentially be very useful in providing comprehensive information concerning the function of burnt mound sites in County Cavan and Ireland in general.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the life and artistic patronage of the Victorian philanthropist, Angela Burdett Coutts. The daughter of both an aristocrat and a member of the nouveau riche, Burdett Coutts was the product of both the new and old world of Victorian society and this thesis explores the ways in which Burdett Coutts fashioned an identity as a member of the aristocratic elite through her patronage of art and architecure. It explores the ways in which taste, gender and class are reflected in her collecting practice and examines her role as a patron through three case studies, as art collector, philanthropist and patron of architecture.

Anene, Chigolum. "Compassion Fatigue, Burnout and Self-care Strategies Amongst Los Angeles County Child Welfare Workers." CSUSB ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.lib.csusb.edu/etd/705.

Full text
Abstract:
Child welfare social workers have extremely demanding jobs, which may often lead to burnout and compassion fatigue. The purpose of this research study was to explore self-care methods implemented by child welfare social workers, the methods that work best for them and the ways in which these practices assist in preventing and reducing the risks of compassion fatigue and burnout. This research study also explored the ways in which child welfare social workers have been able to cope and prevent compassion fatigue and burnout. This research study utilized a qualitative, exploratory research approach. Face-to-face interviews with fifteen participants were taken place at the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) offices within Los Angeles County. These interviews took place at various times and days. One major key finding from this study was the need for improvement in organizational support. Another key finding was the importance of self-care when coping with the daily stressors in the workplace and the ways in which self-care provides an outlet for preventing compassion fatigue and burnout. Participants all had different forms of self-care that worked best for their own wellbeing. It was determined that self-care strategies effectiveness depended on each individual’s response to the approach. Determining the best ways for social workers to cope with traumatic experiences in the workplace allows for administration to strengthen policies, such as ongoing training and supervision, while also being aware of the signs that child welfare social workers may display when they are experiencing compassion fatigue and burnout.

Full text
Abstract:
The influence of ideology and attitudes on the decision-making process of Supreme Court justices has been well documented, such that the attitudinal model has emerged as the dominant paradigm for understanding judicial behavior. When ideology and personal preferences seem to eclipse legal factors, such as adherence to precedent and deference to the democratically-elected branches, outcries of  judicial activism have occurred. Previous studies (Lindquist and Cross 2009) have operationalized judicial activism and have provided measures for studying behavior that may be considered activist (as opposed to restrainist), further supporting the premise that ideology trumps other extra-attitudinal and legal factors in the judicial decision-making process. While the attitudinal model indicates that ideology is the strongest predictor of judicial decision-making, this research will include a number of legal variables that have significantly influenced justices votes. As previous studies have demonstrated, an integrated model that combines a number of critical variables can have more explanatory power than one that relies on attitudinal reasons alone (Banks 1999; Hurwitz and Stefko 2004; Mishler and Sheehan 1996). As such, the purpose of this research is to examine individual level decision-making of the most ideological justices on the Burger and Rehnquist Courts (1969-2004) in regards to their activist behavior to overrule legal precedents and invalidate federal statutes. This research will employ multivariate regression analysis to assess the effects of attitudinal, legal and extra-attitudinal factors in the judicial decision-making process.<br>M.A.<br>Department of Political Science<br>Sciences<br>Political Science MA

Perricane, Lisa Helen. "County Demographic Influence on Toxic Chemical Activities of Chemical-Related Industry in Michigan." ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/1420.

Full text
Abstract:
There are a large number of chemical facilities that emit toxic chemicals in Michigan, and there is a concern regarding toxic chemical exposure to the residents of Michigan counties. However, it is uncertain whether chemical companies that emit toxic chemicals in Michigan are influenced by county demographic factors in deciding whether to engage in voluntary pollution prevention (P2) activities and whether this decision influences U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (U.S. EPA) Risk-Screening Environmental Indicators (RSEI) scores. Using Bullard's theory of environmental justice, the purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if there was a correlation between chemical-related industry's voluntary P2 participation, U.S. EPA's RSEI scores for chemical-related facilities, and demographic factors in Michigan counties between 2007 through 2011. A cross-sectional design using hierarchical multiple regression analysis was used to study potential environmental inequality in 20 Michigan counties. Publically available data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. EPA included demographic data, voluntary P2 participation data, and RSEI scores for 20 counties in Michigan. A statistically insignificant correlation was found between voluntary P2 participation and median annual RSEI scores of Michigan industry; while a statistically significant, inverse correlation was found between median annual RSEI scores and educational attainment. The results from this study can be used by policy makers to promote more effective voluntary P2 policy and to create county-specific public education programs promoting toxic chemical awareness that will lead to positive social change in Michigan.

Restrepo, Monica. "The Relationship between Job Structure, Burnout, and Coping Methods among Public School county Bus Drivers, Bus Aides, Mechanics, and Clerical Workers." FIU Digital Commons, 2013. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/898.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the structure of jobs and burnout, and to assess to what extent, if any this relationship was moderated by individual coping methods. This study was supported by the Karasek's (1998) Job Demand-Control-Support theory of work stress as well as Maslach and Leiter's (1993) theory of burnout. Coping was examined as a moderator based on the conceptualization of Lazarus and Folkman (1984). Two overall overarching questions framed this study: (a) what is the relationship between job structure, as operationalized by job title, and burnout across different occupations in support services in a large municipal school district? and (b) To what extent do individual differences in coping methods moderate this relationship? This study was a cross-sectional study of county public school bus drivers, bus aides, mechanics, and clerical workers (N = 253) at three bus depot locations within the same district using validated survey instruments for data collection. Hypotheses were tested using simultaneous regression analyses. Findings indicated that there were statistically significant and relevant relationships among the variables of interest; job demands, job control, burnout, and ways of coping. There was a relationship between job title and physical job demands. There was no evidence to support a relationship between job title and psychological demands. Furthermore, there was a relationship between physical demands, emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment; key indicators of burnout. Results showed significant correlations between individual ways of coping as a moderator between job structure, operationalized by job title, and individual employee burnout adding empirical evidence to the occupational stress literature. Based on the findings, there are implications for theory, research, and practice. For theory and research, the findings suggest the importance of incorporating transactional models in the study of occupational stress. In the area of practice, the findings highlight the importance of enriching jobs, increasing job control, and providing individual-level training related to stress reduction.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the effects of the change from strict scrutiny to the undue burden standard in Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992). A history of abortion in the United States and the various ways in which government regulates it is explored. Particular attention is focused on the role of the federal judiciary in abortion regulation. Theories of judicial decision making are discussed as means to understand the outcome of cases. Several models are tested to determine which, if any, model explains judicial decision making. The effect of the change in standard, as well as an alternate precedent, are examined.

Abstract:
Spoiler Alert! The purpose of this essay is to analyze how religion and life philosophies are expressed and which funtion they have in the video- and computer game Fallout 4. This purpose will be achieved by looking into the religious movements that exists in the game. The method used is a thematic description with comparative appropriation and the essay was based on the following issues: Which God-image and cosmology characterizes the movements? How are the movements organized? Which ethical and political bases does the movements rest upon? In which way(s) are the movements presented, in a negative or positive way?   The basic conclusion is that the game contains several movements which are all different in some ways. Some are more similar than others while some are more different. The most common property is the belief of something itself, they are all expressing some kind of belief. The movements degree of organization varies. Some are far more structured than others. They do all have different purposes and goals which also make their ethical och political bases varying. The movements are mostly presented in some negative way but some are also presented in postive ways. The way the movements are presented in are therefor also varying.

Full text
Abstract:
Treatment of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and development of new therapies have been challenging due to the disease complexity and slow progression, and the limited sensitivity of available clinical outcomes. Modeling and simulation has become an increasingly important component in drug development and in post-marketing optimization of use of medication. This thesis focuses on development of pharmacometric models for characterization and quantification of the relationships between drug exposure, biomarkers and clinical endpoints in relapse-remitting MS (RRMS) following cladribine treatment. A population pharmacokinetic model of cladribine and its main metabolite, 2-chloroadenine, was developed using plasma and urine data. The renal clearance of cladribine was close to half of total elimination, and was found to be a linear function of creatinine clearance (CRCL). Exposure-response models could quantify a clear effect of cladribine tablets on absolute lymphocyte count (ALC), burden of disease (BoD), expanded disability status scale (EDSS) and relapse rate (RR) endpoints. Moreover, they gave insight into disease progression of RRMS. This thesis further demonstrates how integrated modeling framework allows an understanding of the interplay between ALC and clinical efficacy endpoints. ALC was found to be a promising predictor of RR. Moreover, ALC and BoD were identified as predictors of EDSS time-course. This enables the understanding of the behavior of the key outcomes necessary for the successful development of long-awaited MS therapies, as well as how these outcomes correlate with each other. The item response theory (IRT) methodology, an alternative approach for analysing composite scores, enabled to quantify the information content of the individual EDSS components, which could help improve this scale. In addition, IRT also proved capable of increasing the detection power of potential drug effects in clinical trials, which may enhance drug development efficiency. The developed nonlinear mixed-effects models offer a platform for the quantitative understanding of the biomarker(s)/clinical endpoint relationship, disease progression and therapeutic response in RRMS by integrating a significant amount of knowledge and data.

Abstract:
However, no link has been identified between those scores and CML biology. We show that high-risk patients have high GATA2 levels, in correlation with higher baseline basophil and platelet counts, two parameters used to calculate prognostic scores, and expression of genes involved in basophils. GATA2 expression increases in accelerated and myeloidblast-phase. Since some patients can now stop treatment, with a near 50% success rate, it is necessary to reevaluate the way we assess prognosis. A 6-month optimal molecular response was associated with an increased discontinuation attempt rate in our cohort. While the diagnosis of CML is fairly easy, it is often difficult to distinguish essential thrombocythemia (ET), pre-myelofibrosis and myelofibrosis. The numeration of CD34+ circulating cells is of interest in this setting : we show that a number &lt; 10/μ excludes the diagnosis of myelofibrosis with a very good sensitivity (97%) and good specificity (90%). In a cohort of patients with ET and CALR mutation, We show that an increase in allele burden, and not additional mutations at diagnosis or during follow-up,is associated with an increased risk of progression. All of these parameters will be evaluated in a prospective multicentric study in order to elaborate a non-invasive diagnostic score to distinguish TE, pre-myélofibrosis, and myelofibrosis

Abstract:
碩士<br>亞洲大學<br>健康產業管理學系健康管理組碩士在職專班<br>105<br>Background and purpose: Taiwan is facing the problem of family structural changes due to aging and low birth rate, especially in the Yunlin County which is the second highest (16.47%) of the aging population. The primary caregiver who give the average daily care time more than 6 hours may have higher stress and low quality of life, including physical discomfort (insomnia, depression and back pain). We want to study and explore the load of the primary caregiver and its related influencing factors in Yunlin County. Methods: We conduct a retrospective analysis by using the "Yunlin County Long-term Care Service Evaluation Scale" database from 2011 to 2014. By applying the Bronfenbrenner's ecological model included variables of age, sex, relationship, caring time, caregiver status, employment status and the services approved by the center to analyze the influencing factors of the primary caregiver load. Statistical deducted by SPSS 20.0. Results: 4 categories of load of the primary caregivers were analyzed. Physical safety load: Approved services, gender, age, special caregiver special status, employment status and case relationship and daily care time were statistically significant (P <0.001). Mental condition Load: There were statistically significant differences (P <0.001) between approved services, gender, age, special caregiver special status, employment status and case relationship and daily care time. Family interaction: There was a statistically significant difference (P <0.001) between approved services, age, case relationship and special caregiver status. The total score of family care load: There were statistically significant differences (P <0.001) between approved services, gender, age, special caregiver status, employment status and case relationship and daily care time. Conclusion: The supportive services provided by the health authority and the integration of the long-term resources can indeed give the primary caregiver a clear support for the health, mental condition and family interaction of the major caregivers. Therefore, the relevant health units should continue to attach importance and care to bear the load of the primary caregivers. The results of the study can be used as a review to the caregiver service project reference, and policy formulation or research reference for the relevant social welfare unit.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺北大學<br>社會工作學系<br>100<br>The purpose of this research is to explore the current situation and the determinants of caregiver burden and to find out the impact of the characteristics of both the caregiver and the elder, family function, and social support on caregiver burden. The subjects of this research are the caregivers giving home care service to the disabled elders in Taoyuan County. Adopting purposive sampling method, the sample of the research was drawn from three home care services in Taoyuan County. A total of 102 responses of the questionnaire are taken for final analysis. By using SPSS12.0, the nature of family function, social support, and caregiver burden is analyzed and explained with descriptive statistics. The findings show that caregivers receive less social support from the community but tend to have better performance in terms of family function, and the degrees to which caregivers carry the burden are reported to be average-to-heavy. The multiple regression analysis indicates that four factors determine the degrees of caregiver burden: (1) family function; (2) the educational background of the caregiver; (3) the age of the disabled elders; and (4) the level of the disability The research findings above provide insights and suggestions for social welfare organizations, helping to increase caregivers’ family function and to decrease caregiver burden when they offer services to those in need. The limitations of this study and the suggestions for further research are stated in the final part of the paper.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>機械工程系所<br>93<br>This experimental study investigates the flame transition phenomena over a single Tsuji burner as functions of the incoming flow velocity (Uin) and methane to nitrogen mass ratio (α) under a fixed fuel blowing velocity (0.05m/sec) in a wind tunnel. The experimental process is that it fixes the assigned composition of fuel firstly, then, changes the incoming velocity from 0.41 to 2.63 m/sec to observe the corresponding flame configuration. From the experimental observation, in the higher methane mass fraction regime, (α>60%), the envelope, transition and wake flames appear in order as the incoming flow velocity increases. A transition zone between envelop and wake flame regions is identified in this regime. In such zone, the flame shows an oscillatory feature and can only be survived for 5~8 seconds. It is highly unstable that it might appear as a lift-off flame, wake flame or extinction. On the other hand, when α≦60%, the envelope flame is directly transformed into wake one as incoming velocity gradually increases up to the transition velocity, and no transition flame is identified in this regime. This study also finds that the flame transition velocity is reduced as the mass fraction of methane in fuel mixture is lowered. The variations of envelope flame stand-off distance, flame thickness and wake flame attached angle are demonstrated graphically to interpolate the corresponding physical mechanisms. The flame temperature distributions along the vertical centerline of a single cylinder burner for the envelope flame and wake flame are measured to understand the flame varying trend. Finally, the visualized results from this experiment are compared with the corresponding numerical simulations to confirm the experimental credibility. The comparison shows that both numerical and experimental results have the same qualitative trend. The transition velocities from envelop to wake flames in the regime of and from envelop to transition flames and transition to stable wake flames in the regime of obtained from experiments appear to be higher than the predicted ones. The envelope flame thickness and stand-off distance obtained from experiments are smaller than those from simulations. As to wake flame attached angles, they are higher in the experiments.

碩士<br>中山醫學大學<br>醫學研究所<br>97<br>Objective: To investigate the differences of job stress of the caregivers in elderly long-term care institutions, and its relationship with quality of life, mental health status, depression, and sleep quality. Methods and Materials: Study subjects were recruited from caregivers of five elderly long-term care institutions in Taichung city and Taichung county. The questionnaires were job stress scale, Chinese Health Questionnaire (CHQ-12), Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Those questionnaires and demographics are analyzed by descriptive statistics, bivariate correlations, and linear regression analysis. Results: One hundred and twenty seven caregivers were delivered the questionnaires and 116 of them completed all questionnaires. The completion rate was 91%. Results revealed that the higher of caregivers’ job stress, significantly the worse of their quality of life, mental health, depressed mood, and sleep quality. Linear regression analysis revealed that the more of the caregivers job stress, the more impact on their quality of life, mental health and depression. Conclusions: This study revealed the close relationship among the caregivers’ job stress and their quality of life, mental health, depressed mood, and sleep quality. These results could remind the administrator of the elderly long-term care institutions to pay more attention to the job stress of those caregivers’ and further promotion the physical and psychological health of them.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺中科技大學<br>財政稅務系租稅管理與理財規劃碩士班<br>104<br>This study examine the relationship between foreign direct investment and tax burden by using panel data in 34 countries from 2002 to 2012. Controlling for other variables include the degree of openness, government governance, education expenditure, health expenditure, labor force participation rate and population density. This study also used Panel GMM, with the research focus of examining whether tax burden will affect the capital inflow of foreign direct investment. Under the influence of different factors, will the relationship between tax burden and foreign direct investment change? Tax is the main source of revenue for the government, yet the level of national taxes does not mean a government has sufficient financial resources. It is necessary to measure from people’s tax burden rate. When the tax burden of a country is higher, people pay more taxes and the government has more financial resources. If it is methodically led by a clean and efficient government, it can indeed conduct more beneficial constructions for the people; on the contrary, when the tax burden is low, the state tax revenue may not be able to cover expenditures. As a result, the government will not have enough budgets to cover social welfare expenditures such as public health expenditure and education expenditure for human resource development. The country&apos;&apos;s economic growth will be hindered eventually. Through empirical results, this paper proved that a favorable tax environment has significant impact on foreign direct investment and reducing tax burden may attract foreign direct investment. In addition, under the empirical regression model, it showed that openness, government governance and labor force participation rate have positive impact on foreign direct investment. We also found that health expenditure has a negative impact on foreign direct investment.

Winehav, Anna. "The burden of my husband’s legacy : An analysis of the living situation of widows of al-Shabaab associated members in Kwale County, Kenya." Thesis, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:ths:diva-1094.

Abstract:
In recent years there has been a growing interest in and a number of studies sensitive to the relationships between gender and conflict, including gender and violent extremism. While much attention, both in the media and scientifically, has been given to individuals directly connected to violent extremist groups, less attention has been focused on their families. This study aims to fill in the empirical gap in how violent extremism impacts family members of people associated with violent extremist organisations. The research is particularly concerned with women who became widows due to their husbands’ engagement in a violent extremist group. By utilising the biographical narratives of the widows in Kwale County in Kenya, the study seeks to broaden an understanding of the impact of violent extremism on widows whose husbands chose to join the violent extremist group al-Shabaab, with its main stronghold in Somalia. The study focuses on four impact areas: economic, physical and emotional, socio- cultural, as well as ideological impact. Moreover, based on theoretical approaches, the study discusses a widespread assumption of women as preventive forces for violent extremism in the context of Kwale County, as well as women’s empowerment measures vital for widows in the region. The results reveal that the most tangible impacts on the widows are economic, physical and emotional, with a wide range of severe consequences for both the widows and their children. Additionally, socio-cultural impact plays an immense role for the widows living situation. The study does not reveal any findings which may suggest that the widows have been impacted ideologically by their husbands in the same way. Subsequently, the study questions the assumption of women as best placed to prevent violent extremism within the domestic sphere in the context of Kwale county. Furthermore, it focuses attention on the importance of economic, educational and religious empowerment of women in the region.

Hsieh, Meng-Chen, and 謝孟蓁. "A community-based study for latent TB infection in a country with an intermediate TB burden, using QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube and tuberculin skin test." Thesis, 2013. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/73217867550590919994.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>流行病學與預防醫學研究所<br>101<br>Background: The tuberculin skin test (TST) was the mainstay for detecting latent TB infection (LTBI). Over the past decade, commercial tests based on T-cell assays and interferon-gamma-release assays (IGRAs) have been developed for diagnosing LTBI. IGRAs evaluate IFN-γ responses to the tuberculosis-specific antigens and would not be affected by BCG vaccination and most NTM exposure. A positive IGRA result was reported to be more strongly associated with degree of TB exposure than TST, but the findings in low prevalence countries are inconsistent with the studies in low-and intermediate prevalence countries. So far the majority of IGRAs studies have been restricted to TB patients, TB contacts or high risk groups for TB. Therefore, the performance of IGRAs in general population is still limited. Aims: Based on the performance of IGRA and TST in general population in a country with intermediate TB burden, we evaluated their operational characteristics, the yieled of the combination of TST and IGRA to detect LTBI and then explore the possibility of using TST result as a predictor for IGRA. Materials and methods: A community-based study was conducted in Changhua city in May 2011. The study subjects from the attendee of Changhua community-based integrated screen (CHCIS) were evaluated with a clinical and physical examination and underwent both QFT-GIT and TST. Subject’s information was collected by questionnaire including demographic characteristics, underlying disease, family disease history, prior TB history, and TB contact history. Our analysis consists of three major parts: we gave the results of descriptive analysis and then we used various cutoff of TST, age groups and BCG vaccination groups to compare agreement between TST and QFT-GIT. The second part was to use the operational characteristics of TST to estimate the sensitivity and specificity of QFT-GIT for LTBI. We compare expected prevalence of TB by annual risk of TB infection with prevalence of TB based on the estimated sensitivity and specificity of QFT-GIT. Given QFT-GIT as a proxy indicator of TB disease progression, we explore the possibility of using TST to predict the result of QFT-GIT. By assuming the clinical scores, as estimated from logistic regression, followed normal distribution, we applied Bayesian approach to estimate probability density function of the scores. Based on the function, we set up the upper limit and the lower limit of the scores. If the scores are within the area between the lower and the upper limit, QFT-GIT testings are in need, otherwise not. We also using likelihood ratio to estimate posterior probability by various condition and clinical scores. Results: Of 492 subjects who underwent QFT-GIT and TST, the positive rate of QFT-GIT (≥0.35IU/ml) was 10.6% (52/492), the positive rate of TST (cutoff ≥10mm.) was 55.1% (271/492). The overall level of agreement and Kappa(κ) between QFT-GIT and TST (cutoff≥10mm) was very low (50.2 %, κ=0.08).The agreement between two tests in various BCG vaccination groups was as follows: group 1 (aged ≤36 years), 43.8%,κ=0.00;group 2 (aged 37-47 years): 40.0%,κ=-0.03;group 3 (aged 48-67 years), 55.2%, κ=0.13;group 4(aged >67 years): 58.3%, κ=0.22. The result showed that agreement between two tests was affected by age, cutoff of TST and chronic disease history rather than BCG vaccination history. Sensitivity of the QFT-GIT using the operational characteristics of TST for detecting LTBI was only 5%-43%, but specificity was ranged from 95% to 99%.The score function resuling from logistic regression was:Score=0.58×TST+0.20×Age +0.03×Sex. The upper limit and the lower limit were set up at 3 and 1.12 with a false positive rate of 5.8% and a false negative rate of 5% respectively. Those younger than 55 with the induration size of TST <5mm and those younger than 40 with the induration<10mm were among the group lower than the lower limit. On the other hand, The people older than 60 with the induration size ≥15mm were among the group higher than the upper limit. The sensitivity, false negative rate, specificity and false positive rate of the model were 76.9%, 23.1%, 70.3%, 29.7%, respectively. Conclusion: Agreement between TST and IGRA was highly dependent on age and might not be affected by BCG vaccination history. IGRA was low sensitivity but high specificity tool for detecting LTBI. Using the score function, based on the age, sex and the induration sizes of TST, to identify those need QFT-GIT testing could help decrease the number needed to be testing by 21%. The above findings provide valuable information for the decision making of screening and treating LTBI.

MacLeod, Suzanne. "From the "rising tide" to solidarity: disrupting dominant crisis discourses in dementia social policy in neoliberal times." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/5213.

Full text
Abstract:
As a social worker practising in long-term residential care for people living with dementia, I am alarmed by discourses in the media and health policy that construct persons living with dementia and their health care needs as a threatening “rising tide” or crisis. I am particularly concerned about the material effects such dominant discourses, and the values they uphold, might have on the collective provision of care and support for our elderly citizens in the present neoliberal economic and political context of health care. To better understand how dominant discourses about dementia work at this time when Canada’s population is aging and the number of persons living with dementia is anticipated to increase, I have rooted my thesis in poststructural methodology. My research method is a discourse analysis, which draws on Foucault’s archaeological and genealogical concepts, to examine two contemporary health policy documents related to dementia care – one national and one provincial. I also incorporate some poetic representation – or found poetry – to write up my findings. While deconstructing and disrupting taken for granted dominant crisis discourses on dementia in health policy, my research also makes space for alternative constructions to support discursive and health policy possibilities in solidarity with persons living with dementia so that they may thrive.<br>Graduate<br>0452<br>0680<br>0351<br>macsuz@shaw.ca
