Abstract:
It is widely accepted that the current occupational context is a stressful one, especially considering rapid changes in the economic and political environment. Individuals are exposed to higher levels of stress over a longer period of time, which can have serious negative implications. If the stress cannot be tolerated, an individual is at risk of developing an exhaustion-related illness such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Burnout Syndrome. Both Chronic Fatigue and Burnout Syndrome are exhaustion-related phenomena which result from persistent stress. Where Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is characterised primarily as a physical illness, Burnout Syndrome is typically considered psychological. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Burnout Syndrome, as well as the influence of other variables which include job satisfaction, social support, age and gender. Additionally, the study sought to determine the potential prevalence of chronic fatigue and burnout among the sample which was drawn. Quantitative data collection strategies were used, whereby participants completed an online survey consisting of a battery of instruments. A final sample size of 69 participants was achieved. The results show that the population is potentially at risk for both chronic fatigue and burnout, having scored relatively high on the respective scales. In regard to the relationship between Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Burnout Syndrome, the study was not able to conclusively demonstrate a significant relationship between the two syndromes. However, there is evidence to suggest various similarities across the syndromes, particularly in regard to the physical components of exhaustion and the number of physical symptoms experienced by individuals. Future research could further explore this finding to determine the extent of that relationship, and whether it could contribute to a re-conceptualisation of exhaustion-related illnesses.
Mini Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2015.
Psychology
MA
Unrestricted

In the present we expose the results of the study about burnout syndrome incidence in a sample of 233 educators (127 male and 106 female) with an age range among 20 and 65 years old, who work in public and private schools in Arequipa City. The Maslach Burnout Inventory for Educators was applied and the results show that 93,7% of male educators has a moderate level of burnout and 6,3% has a severe level, meantime 91,5% of female teachers has a moderate level and 7,5% has a severe level of burnout. Major percentage of male teachers has higher punctuations in exhaustion, cynicism and inefficacy; than female educators. Moreover, we found significant relations (p<,000) among type of educative administration and cynicism and inefficacy. As conclusion, male teachers are more severe affected by burnout syndrome than female teachers, who dedicate to teach students in basic education level

Abstract:
Abstract If you are exposed during a certain period of time to prolonged stress without time to recover, you may develop exhaustion disorder. The diagnosis of exhaustion disorder is a relatively new diagnosis in Sweden; the diagnosis was formally accepted in year 2005. Aim: This study referred to lighten exhaustion disorder from the patient's perspective. Method: A literature review was performed; the search was made by using selected keywords and were conducted in the databases Cinahl, PubMed and PsycInfo. The searches in this study included ten articles. Through content analysis the articles was structured and analysed. Results: Results are presented under five topics: Letting go, insight balance and self-image, perceptions of the warning signs and symptoms, assistance and support and recovery. The results of the literature study highlights the importance of patients' experience to come to the knowledge of the reason why they suffered exhaustion disorder, not until then could they begin their journey towards recovery. Evidence shows that patients working with their behavior patterns had their self-esteem and self-respect back. By learning strategies to manage stress patients learned to recognize the body's signals. Further research of patients’ experiences is important when the effects of rehabilitation methods for exhaustion disorders is deficient.
