Pappenfus, Barbara J. "How frequency of change within organizations affects burnout of human resource professionals." Thesis, Capella University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3608629.

Full text
Abstract:

Businesses are faced with many challenges in the global economy which require frequent changes to their organizational structure and business processes. One of the roles of the human resources (HR) department in any business is to act as the strategic partner for management in disseminating changes to the broader employee base. The HR professional who is faced with communicating and implementing these changes may encounter stressful situations as they are executing these new change processes. When stress is not treated it can lead to burnout. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate if there was a relationship between frequency of change in organizations and burnout among HR professionals. The study also sought to explore the relationship between burnout and gender as well as the relationship between and burnout and position within the organization. The sample included 147 HR professionals who completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), which measured burnout and the Frequency of Change Scale (FoCS) which measured change. The results indicated that the frequency of change in an organization does not have a significant effect on burnout among HR professionals. No relationships were found between burnout and gender or burnout and position. Additional research is needed in this area and recommendations are suggested.

Kanai-Pak, Masako. "Leadership Behaviors that Mitigate Burnout and Empower Japanese Nurses." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/193612.

Full text
Abstract:
Work environments for health care providers in acute care hospitals have become increasingly demanding due to the impact of economic constraints, the rapid advancement of treatment modalities, and value systems changes among clients, as well as among heath care providers. In Japan, health care industries also face severe economic constraints. Because Japan has socialized medicine, the government controls reimbursements. Due to the dramatic growth in health care expenditures, the Japanese government has imposed regulations that reward shorter lengths of hospital stays with higher reimbursement. As a result, only patients whose conditions are critical and require complicated nursing care are now hospitalized. Consequently, the acuity levels of patients have increased every year. Under such conditions, administrators are charged with keeping the organization financially solvent so that they can remain in business, while continuing to improve the quality of their services. Although systems research in health care settings has received considerable attention in North American countries, there has been little research in this area in Japan, where systematic leadership training for nurse managers is also still in a developmental stage. Research on organizational effectiveness has shown positive correlations between managers' leadership styles and employees' psychological well-being or self-efficacy.The purposes of this study were: 1) to test Laschinger's Work Empowerment Theory with incorporation of leadership behaviors in acute care hospitals in Japan, and 2) to investigate how leadership behaviors might mitigate burnout and empower staff nurses working in acute care hospitals in Japan. It was expected that employees who perceived a high level of Structural Empowerment would demonstrate high Psychological Empowerment and low burnout level. If employees perceived high leadership behaviors in their immediate supervisors, their Psychological Empowerment was expected to be higher and their burnout level was expected to be lower. The following four instruments were used: 1) Conditions of Work Effectiveness Questionnaire-II (CWEQ-II); 2) Psychological Empowerment Scale; 3) Nurse Manager's Action Scale; and 4) Maslach Burnout Inventory. The questionnaire was distributed to 1,377 staff nurses working on 50 inpatient care units in two acute care hospitals in Japan. Participant response rates for all units were equal or greater than 50%. Psychometric evaluation of the instruments was performed. Construct validity and reliability were established for all instruments at the individual level. At the group level, construct validity and reliability for two instruments (Structural Empowerment and Nurse Manger's Action Scale) were confirmed, but not for two others (Psychological Empowerment and Maslach Burnout Inventory). Results suggested that the Work Empowerment Theory also fits Japanese nurses, but there was little effect of leadership behaviors on staff nurses' perceived empowerment. A group level analysis indicated that leadership behaviors did not influence Psychological Empowerment or Burnout, but influenced Structural Empowerment.

Jowett, Gareth Edward. "Perfectionism, engagement and burnout in youth sport and dance : a self-determination theory perspective." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6846/.

Full text
Abstract:
Recently researchers have found that indicators of perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns share divergent relationships with athlete burnout. To extend this research the thesis examined whether self-determination theory could help to explain these divergent relationships. The first study suggested that the positive association between perfectionistic concerns and athlete burnout was explained, in part, by controlled motivation. In contrast, the inverse association between perfectionistic strivings and athlete burnout was explained, in part, by autonomous motivation. Building on study one, the second study of the thesis examined whether perfectionistic concerns and perfectionistic strivings also shared divergent associations with athlete engagement, and whether basic psychological needs could explain these associations. The study two findings suggested that perfectionistic concerns and perfectionistic strivings did share opposing associations with athlete engagement. Moreover, the positive perfectionistic strivings-engagement and inverse perfectionistic concerns-engagement associations were explained by basic psychological need satisfaction and thwarting. In addition, the positive perfectionistic concerns-burnout and inverse perfectionistic strivings-burnout associations were also mediated by basic psychological need satisfaction and thwarting. Study three built on the first two studies by examining how perfectionistic strivings and perfectionistic concerns predicted self-conscious emotions on a day-to-day basis. The study three findings suggested that perfectionistic concerns predicted reduced pride, increased shame and guilt, and greater emotional instability; whereas perfectionistic strivings did not significantly predict self-conscious emotions. The fourth study examined how parents and dance tutors moderate dancers’ perfectionism. The study four findings advanced previous research in sport and dance by demonstrating that parental conditional regard strengthened the positive association between perfectionistic concerns and ill being in youth dancers. Together the studies suggested that perfectionistic concerns and perfectionistic strivings share opposing relationships with well-being and ill-being outcomes in youth sport and dance and that self-determination theory provides a theoretical lens through which to understand these relationships.

Bainguel, Kimberly Marie. "Burnout Among Child Welfare Social Workers in Louisiana." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6303.

Full text
Abstract:
Burnout among child welfare social workers negatively affects social workers and the social welfare system. The purpose of this action research study was to explore what child welfare social workers do to alleviate burnout. The practice-focused research questions for this study center on two elements: (a) the experiences of burnout among child welfare social workers employed by the Department of Family and Children services in the southeastern region of the United States and (b) the social work practices used to alleviate burnout. The conceptual framework for this study was the Maslach theory on burnout. Action research study procedures were used to facilitate analysis of the research problem. Data were collected using semistructured questions administered to 6 child welfare social workers in a focus group. The selection criteria for the child welfare social workers were social workers who work for the department of children and family services for at least 6 months. The data were transcribed verbatim from an audio recording. Codes were assigned to the data and reliability checks were conducted. The themes that emerged from analysis of the data included workload, lack of influence on the job, lack of rewards on the job, negative social interaction, and value differences in individuals and their jobs. The findings of this study might contribute to positive social change by enhancing awareness regarding burnout in child welfare social workers and providing an opportunity for child welfare social workers and child welfare agencies to learn how to address causes of burnout in child welfare social workers in the southeastern United States.

Stewart, Warrick Tremayne. "Authentic Leadership as a Model for Reducing Licensed Mental Health Professional Leader Burnout." Thesis, Grand Canyon University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3680284.

Full text
Abstract:

A considerable deficit of Licensed Mental Health Professionals (LMHPs) is expected in the United States because of the rapid professional burnout and turnover. Research has related various leadership styles to job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and retention. This study focused on authentic leadership theory and the relationship between authentic leadership and burnout. The researcher conducted a causal-comparative study with a convenience sample of 116 licensed mental health professionals to assess the relationship between authentic leadership and LMHP leader burnout in an attempt to identify a solution to the systemic burnout and turnover problems in community mental health centers. The results indicated that authentic leadership was a statistically significant predictor of all three subscales of the MBI. The multiple linear regression analysis indicated that the subcomponents of authentic leadership had a relationship with the three subscales of the MBI. The transparency sub-component of authentic leadership was particularly important because it was a statistically significant predictor of the emotional exhaustion subscale, while the balanced processing and self-awareness subcomponents were also statistically significant predictors of the depersonalization subscale. The moral sub-component of authentic leadership was a statistically significant predictor of the personal accomplishment subscale, which makes this study useful for development of leadership trainings designed to promote work environments that are able to minimize burnout and turnover in LMHPs.

Vidal, Burnette. "Stress and Burnout: Empathy, Engagement, and Retention in Healthcare Support Staff." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/7090.

Full text
Abstract:
Research on stress and burnout and their influence on empathy, engagement, and retention, in healthcare support staff is scarce in the literature. The theoretical framework for this study was the conservation of resources (COR) theory which claims that when people are stressed, emotionally exhausted, and experiencing burnout, they protect and preserve their physical and mental resources from becoming depleted by reducing their effort and withdrawing from work. The key research question was: Does burnout mediate the relationship between stress and empathy, engagement, and turnover intentions in healthcare support staff working in a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC)? This quantitative, non-experimental, mediation analysis included 83 female and 10 male healthcare support staff working in an FQHC. The variables were assessed using the Job Stress Survey (JSS), Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OBI), Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) – Brief Form, and the Behavioral Intentions to Withdraw Measure (BIWM). A path analysis was performed to estimate the magnitude of the relationships between the variables. The results indicate that burnout does not mediate the relationship between stress and empathy, but it does significantly predict engagement and turnover intentions. FQHCs serve vulnerable and medically complex patients in underserved communities, and when the negative impact of burnout in healthcare support staff is addressed, patients, providers, and staff can enable positive social change by achieving important clinical health outcomes for patients.

Alphin, Caroline Grey. "Living on the Edge of Burnout: Defamiliarizing Neoliberalism Through Cyberpunk Science Fiction." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/88796.

Full text
Abstract:
A dominant trend in cyberpunk scholarship draws from Fredric Jameson's diagnosis of postmodernism as the logic of late capitalism, using Jameson's spatial pastiche, schizophrenic temporality, and waning of affect, along with Jameson's characterization of Baudrillard's simulacrum to interpret postmodern cultural artifacts. For many cultural critics, the city of cyberpunk is thoroughly postmodern because parallels can be drawn between the cyberpunk city and the postmodern condition. However, very little work has considered the ways in which cyberpunk can defamiliarize the necro-spatial and necro-temporal logic of neoliberalism. This project moves away from more traditional disciplinary aesthetic methods of analyzing power and urban systems, such as interpretation and representation. And, it problematizes the biopolitical present in three different ways. First, by weaving in and out of an analysis of the narratives, discourses, and spatio-temporalities of cyberpunk and neoliberalism, I seek to produce epistemological interferences within these genres/disciplines, and thus, to disrupt the conceptual and lived biopolitical status-quo of late-capitalism. The goal is to open the door for discomfort with and a critical awareness of the necrotic conditions of competition by highlighting the fictive nature of neoliberalism. Second, this study problematizes accelerationism as a viable alternative to leftist politics and suggests in the end that accelerationism is a form of neoliberal resilience. It does this through an analysis of the biohacker that reframes this subject in terms of accelerationism and the logic of intensity. I argue that the biohacker is the accelerationist subject Alex Williams and Nick Srnicek advocate for in their "Accelerationist Manifesto," suggesting that this accelerationist subject is, in the end, a neoliberal subject that fits easily within the conditions of competition. This study argues that the biohacker in its numerous forms reflects an underlying pure neoliberalism at work within accelerationism and its neoliberal governmentalities. I suggest that far from being an alternative to leftist politics, accelerationism may further the goals of neoliberalism in its desire to accelerate to a purified market space. And, finally, this study works towards offering a biopolitics that theorizes death in terms of ordinariness and suggests that biopolitics is still a useful analytic within neoliberalism. In other words, Foucault's biopolitics can do more than theorize a genealogy of biological racism and genocide. Rather than advocate for moving beyond biopolitics, this study argues instead that neoliberal biopolitics can still be understood in terms of Foucault's analytic, and that perhaps, we need to disentangle Foucault's work from Achille Mbembe's "Necropolitics."

McKinley, Jimmie Lee. "The Experiences of High School Teachers Who Have Encountered Burnout." ScholarWorks, 2016. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/1976.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative case study addressed the impact of administration and school leadership on teachers who encounter burnout. The purpose of this project study was to examine this phenomenon through the experiences of Grades 9-12 classroom teachers, which ultimately could reduce the amount of early retirees, reduce the amount of illnesses among teachers, and increase the enthusiasm and vitality of educators. The conceptual framework was based on Bandura's social learning theory. Interview data were collected from four high school educators using purposive sampling, through semi structured face-to-face inter-views, and were coded using a line-by-line content analysis for emergent themes. Findings included positive and negative experiences of teacher burnout, the encounter of change and flexibility, and the importance of professional collaboration. Through the findings of this study, teachers are encouraged to engage in direct coping strategies such as improving class management skills to help with a positive workday. Indirect coping strategies include participation in sports activities outside school hours. Strategies are offered for administrators to support teachers on fostering empathy, relationship building, and communication. The outcomes are beneficial to local school and district administrators to support a positive working environment for teachers in which all students can learn. Positive social change at the local level includes senior district administrators making decisions on the allocation of human and capital resources to help burned out teachers.

Full text
Abstract:

Critical care nurses may experience burnout and stress because they are caring for an increasing number of dying patients in the intensive care setting. The purpose of the qualitative, existential phenomenological research study was to explore the experiences, perceptions, and needs of critical care nurses who provided care to dying patients receiving futile medical care and how their experiences may contribute to burnout and stress. Findings revealed that critical care nurses in the study experienced aversive memories associated with scents and sounds of death in intensive care, discomfort, ethical concerns, family issues, personal issues, and physician barriers, but burnout was not discussed. The sample consisted of four critical care nurses who worked in a hospital in Northern California. Data collection was conducted by unstructured interviews, and data analysis was accomplished using thematic analysis and additionally interpreted using NVivo 10 software. Authentic experiences when caring dying patients, barriers encountered while caring for dying patients and identifying resources for nurses caring for dying patients were three themes that emerged from the data analysis. Goodness of caring with intent to stay, meaningful engagement, death feelings/perceptions/scents/sounds, personal feelings, values neutral, advocating for patients, family issues, physician barriers, developing coping skills, colleague/communication support, and end-of-life education/training were the 11 sub-themes that were revealed during the data analysis. There is considerable need for continued research on how to develop and offer a range of supportive resources to help nurses care for themselves while caring for dying patients and their families, on integrating palliative care teams in intensive care units, and how health care organizations could benefit from developing palliative or comfort care units in their organizations.

Abstract:
Burnout is a serious work related syndrome that is a result of exposure to chronic work stress. In addition to the consequences of burnout on the individual, the symptoms of burnout can adversely affect the organization, the clients the individual works with and the individual's close family and friends. The literature has focused on the history of burnout and the level of burnout experienced by various high stress occupations; however there has not been extensive research into the role personality traits play in burnout. The main research question of this study was to identify personality traits that are more susceptible to burnout among correctional workers. This research utilized the survey research method by having participants voluntarily complete a demographics form, the Maslach Burnout Inventory for Human Service Workers, and the Big Five Inventory. Data was collected through an online questionnaire (N=169). Data was analyzed by correlation analysis and two step multiple regression using demographics and the individual components of burnout. The results suggested that individuals possessing the personality trait Neuroticism experienced high levels of Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalization. The results also suggested that the length of years employed had no relationship to burnout. The study found that years worked, type of work and marital status on their own did not have any relationship with burnout; however when coupled with personality traits. The findings also showed that Neuroticism was the only personality trait that was associated with all three dimensions of burnout. These findings can assist organizations with identifying individuals in the field of corrections who may be predisposed to burnout and allow for early intervention. As a result, the interventions can lead to social change where individuals can be healthier, happier, more fulfilled and better able to protect and service the clients, the organization and the public.

Fee, Craig. "Causes of Burnout Among Church Leaders: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study of Pastors." ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/5077.

Full text
Abstract:
After 30 plus years of research, clergy burnout is an ongoing concern; as such, it is important to identify the causes of this phenomenon. Researchers have already demonstrated that internal factors such as personality types, personal mastery, or conflict management and external factors such as role conflict, excessive activities, or unrealistic expectations, can lead to burnout. The problem that led to this study was that more exploration is needed about clergy's perceptions on leadership and burnout within the church. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore clergy within the Wesleyan Church in the Midwest to discover their perceptions about leadership and burnout within the church. The conceptual framework was shaped by the great man theory of leadership and Maslach's burnout theory. The central research question for this study focused on clergy's perceptions about leadership and burnout within the church. Data were collected using face-to-face semistructured interviews with 23 pastors who are currently leading and experiencing burnout. Data collected included transcribed interviews, field notes, and observations. Data were hand-coded to find key concepts and themes. Two themes that emerged from the data were leadership is understood as hierarchical and leadership is understood as the work of solo actors, which were consistent with the great man theory of leadership. The results of this study may contribute to a better understanding of the factors that lead to clergy burnout. The results of this study will address a gap in literature and may result in positive social change for both the clergy and church congregants because the results can be used to come up with solutions for burnout. This study may also lead to new theories about clergy burnout.

Gittoes, Claire. "Working with the real survivors of life : a grounded theory of managing the demands of trauma work in clinicians working with adult survivors of complex trauma." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/26044.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: There is an emerging literature suggesting that clinicians can go through a process of personal change when engaging in psychotherapeutic work with trauma survivors, which parallels that experienced by clients themselves. The current evidence regarding the relationship between engaging in psychological therapy and compassion satisfaction, vicarious post-traumatic growth and vicarious resilience is inconclusive. A number of methodological weaknesses in the existing literature were identified. The review highlights the need for future research to examine the contextual, demographic and psychological factors which allow therapists to experience positive psychological outcomes from their trauma work. Objective: This study aims to explore vicarious post-traumatic changes in clinicians who work with adult survivors of complex trauma and the role of organisational factors in these changes. Method: Grounded theory methodology was used to analyse interview data with twelve participants (nine female and three male), all of whom had high complex trauma caseloads. Results: The study generated a theory proposing that undertaking trauma work involves the interplay between numerous challenges pertaining to clinicians’ expectations of themselves, therapeutic challenges and organisational neglect. Engaging in trauma work with clients leads to psychological and emotional changes in therapists. A lack of organisational support further contributes to such changes, leaving clinicians feeling isolated and overwhelmed. In order to cope with these challenges, clinicians develop coping mechanisms in the form of emotional detachment and accessing external supports. Alongside this, clinicians identify positive effects of trauma work arising from the therapeutic relationship. These positive outcomes appear to mediate the more negative effects of trauma work, relating to psychoemotional changes and lack of organisational support. Conclusion: These findings suggest a need for a greater understanding of the degree of reciprocity between clients, clinicians and services and the provision of trauma-informed services both for clients and clinicians.

Egegård, Andreas, and Ludwig Johansson. "Gymnasieelevers motivation och utbrändhet inom elitidrott : En kvantitativ enkätstudie i Sveriges nationellt godkända idrottsutbildning." Thesis, Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan, GIH, Institutionen för rörelse, kultur och samhälle, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:gih:diva-6545.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate how elite athlete students in Swedish high schools are motivated towards their sports by Self-determination Theory and Organismic Integration Theory, regarding the Modified Sport Motivation Scale (SMS-6). The study further aims to investigate if elite athlete students had developed symptoms of burnout, regarding the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ). Finally, this study aims to investigate if there exist any correlations between student’s motivation and symptoms of burnout. Studies have reported findings of elite athletes as a special vulnerable group towards symptoms of burnout. Elite athletes train close to their limits, strain themselves to highest achievements. They are also part of that special vulnerable population who may experience symptoms of burnout due to a prolonged stress and pressure associated with elite sports.  Methods: Data collection was obtained by emails between the investigators and high schools in Stockholm. 15 sport high schools were contacted by email and 7 of these high schools participated in the study. 131 elite athlete students participated in the study by answering a questionnaire which contained 39 items, specifically 24 items by SMS-6 and 15 items by ABQ. The questionnaire were answered by a 7 point Likert scale.  Results: The three highest scored means by SMS-6 was the integrated motivation (M = 5,7), identified motivation (M = 4,9) and introjected motivation (M = 4,7). ABQ measure of burnout was (M = 3). The two major findings in the present study was a negative significant correlation reported for integrated motivation and burnout (-0,18) and a positive significant correlation reported for amotivation and burnout (0,37).  Conclusion: By the results in the present study it seems as high levels of self-determinated motivation counteract symptoms of burnout. Thus it also seems as low levels of self-determinated motivation may contribute to symptoms of burnout.

Abstract:
Sick leave due to stress and burnout is increasing among workers. The increase is greatest among teachers. To clarify employers' responsibilities regarding the psychosocial work environment, on 31 March 2016, a new work environment regulation, AFS 2015: 4, came into force. Despite this, sick leave due to stress and burnout among teachers continues to increase. Given the above, the purpose of this study is to investigate how school leaders who work in Swedish primary and secondary schools describes the conditions to work preventively against stress and burnout. Furthermore, the purpose is to investigate if the school leaders interviewed feel that there is any difference in how they work preventively now compared to how they worked before AFS 2015: 4 came into force. The above is analyzed to, if possible, find an explanation for why sick leave among teachers continues to increase even though AFS 2015: 4 came into force and has been valid for four years. The purpose is fulfilled through an interview study where school leaders in primary and secondary schools are interviewed about what conditions they feel they have to conduct preventive work, and whether they feel that there are differences in working methods between "now and then". The interviews are analyzed based on an analysis tool consisting of implementation theory in the form of Lundquist's (2001) förstå, kunna, vilja (understanding, ability, will) and Job Demand resources theory (Bakker & Demerouti 2017) which are combined. The study concludes that school leaders show a good understanding of how preventive work should be conducted, as well as a willingness to perform the same. However, school leaders feel that they lack sufficient financial resources to be able to conduct adequate prevention work against stress and burnout. Furthermore, it appears that school leaders feel that there are no major differences in how they work now versus before AFS 2015: 4 came into force. One possible explanation for the increase in sick leave among teachers is that school leaders lack certain financial resources to be able to work preventively. Another possible explanation is that AFS 2015: 4 is not sufficient to create the conditions for full preventive work to be carried out.

Abstract:
Background The psychosocial work environment affects our health (e.g., sick leave and mortality rates). Research on psychosocial work factors and burnout has focused on specific workplaces or occupations and rarely evaluated in the general population or used longitudinal designs. In Sweden, the diagnosis of exhaustion disorder (closely related to burnout) is a common cause for sick leave. The effects of psychosocial work environments on the process of returning to work has not been studied in this specific patient group. The overall aims of this thesis were to (1) assess the level of burnout in a working general population and investigate the importance of psychosocial work factors and sex on burnout, and (2) study reduction of sick leave and experiences of returning to work in burnout patients, with special attention towards psychosocial work factors. Methods An occupationally active subset (n=1000) of the 2004 Northern Sweden MONICA survey was used in a cross-sectional study. A five-year follow-up of this population was also performed (n=626). Level of burnout was measured using the Shirom Melamed Burnout Questionnaire (SMBQ). Burnout patients were studied for the second thesis aim. A cohort of 117 patients from the REST project was investigated using a baseline questionnaire and sick leave data at two-year follow-up. Grounded Theory was used for an in-depth interview and analysis of 12 employed patients. Results Cross-sectional results from the working general population showed that women have higher levels of burnout than men. In both sexes, work demands, work control, and job insecurity were associated with burnout levels. Among women, education, socioeconomic position, work object, and working hours were also important. Work factors in combination with situational life factors explained about half the difference in burnout level between women and men. Longitudinal results show that burnout levels decrease with age in both sexes, although the changes occur at an earlier age for men. A constant job strain, increased job insecurity, and a worsened economic situation are related to an increase in burnout level. When studying risk factor accumulation, each additional risk factor exposure increases the burnout level. In burnout patients, low work control and use of covert coping towards supervisors and workmates predicts unchanged sick leave levels after a twoyear period. Borderline significance was found between work overcommitment and reduced sick leave. Both personal resources and external support are described as important factors when regaining the ability to work. Perceived validation, insights into the situation and adaptive coping skills increase the chance of regaining the ability to work. External support, particularly from the workplace, is also important. Conclusion There are links between psychosocial work factors and burnout levels in a working general population and sick leave levels in burnout patients. Socioeconomic position and working conditions are important for the level of burnout among working women. In the working population, age differences occur between the sexes; women reduce their burnout levels later in life than men. In the burnout patient population, coping patterns and control at work predict sick leave levels after two years. Both internal resources and external support are important when burnout patients describe the process of regaining the ability to work. The workplace and the work environment are important in preventing working people from becoming burned out and in easeing return to work after sick leave. A person’s coping pattern is also important in reduction of sick leave.

”VERKLIGHETSCHOCKEN”EN KVALITATIV STUDIE OM UTBRÄNDHET OCH DESS PÅVERKAN PÅ ARBETSPLATSENISRAA AHMADAJIN YASSINAhmad I & Yassin A. ”Verklighetschocken”. Examensarbete i Socialt arbete 15 hp.
” THE REALITY CHOCK”A QUALITATIVE STUDY ABOUT BURNOUT AND ITS IMPACT ON THE WORKPLACEISRAA AHMADAJIN YASSINAhmad, I & Yassin, A.” The reality chock”. A qualitative study about burnout and its impact on the workplace. Degree project in Social Work 15 credits. Malmö. University: Faculty of health and society. Department of Social Work, 2016. Social workers are among the professions who suffer the most due burnout. The phenomenon is becoming increasingly frequent recent decades. This aroused interest to explore the subject further. The aim of this study was therefore to examine work related factors that contribute to burnout and how it affects the workplace based on social workers’ perspective. Six semi-structured interviews were made with social workers in Malmo cities social services to answer the aim of the study. The result indicates that there is a complex interaction of contributing factors on three levels. The first is on an individual plan illustrating the factor age and level of ambition as contributing to burnout. The problem that they drew attention to is that during the studies the students create expectations that collide with the reality when they meet the work life. This happens especially when the workplace has bad conditions. Thereby we land on the organizational level where social workers are experiencing high demands, low control and lack of social support. Bad conditions are due the interviewed social workers mainly a workplace with lack of support from manager, bad psychosocial working environment and high workload. This conditions characteristics as unhealthy and organizational factors contributing to burnout. Third level is the gender dimension where double work and the fact that women dominate social work mean worse working conditions and higher workload. The result also showed that the workplace affects when social workers suffer by burnout because it spreads concern through the colleagues, which creates a vicious circle. Colleagues have to cover the work tasks when the social worker suffers due burnout and stays at home on sick leave, which increase the burden on them. Inferior quality, client suffering and economic consequences was also an influence that social workers experienced because of burnout. Thereby we consider that it is of essential importance to increase awareness about the phenomenon because of the risk that next students or we encounter this problem in future profession and workplace. Abstract:
Work stress has a substantial impact on employees, organisations and economies; especially in the fragile economic environment since the ‘Great Recession’ of 2008; which has seen employment levels drop and employees willing to endure more stress at work to avoid retrenchment. These impacts include serious health and financial consequences. Attempts should therefore be made to effectively manage and address work stress to lessen these dire consequences. Many models have been developed and theorised to assist in explaining work stress, the pinnacle of these being the job demands-resources (JD-R) model. In JD-R theory, the dual process explains that work-related well-being follows the following processes: An energetic, also called the health impairment process, in which job demands leads to ill health outcomes through burnout; and then a motivational process which presents that job resources leads to positive organisational outcomes, e.g. organisational commitment, through engagement. The main objectives of this research were 1) to investigate a JD-R model in a large South African sample with a categorical estimator; 2) to investigate the reversed causal hypotheses of burnout and engagement in job demands-resources theory over time; 3) to investigate the likelihood of reporting treatment for health conditions based on burnout and engagement, and 4) to investigate the link between burnout and objective financial outcomes, i.e. by medical aid provider expenditure. To achieve the first objective a cross-sectional design was used (n = 15 633) covering numerous sectors in South Africa. A dual process model was specified with job demands (work overload) leading to ill health through burnout, and job resources (colleague and supervisor support, communication, growth opportunities and role clarity) leading to organisational commitment through engagement. Results of structural equation modelling indicated that the proposed JD-R model was a good fit to the sample. Furthermore, burnout was found to mediate the relationship between job demands and ill health with a medium effect. Engagement was found to mediate the relationship between job resources and organisational commitment with a large effect. The second objective, concerning reversed causality, was achieved with a longitudinal design (n = 593). The hypothesized model included burnout and engagement at time one, and at time two work overload as indicator of job demands, and colleague and supervisor support, communication, growth opportunities and role clarity as indicators of job resources. Results indicated that burnout had a significant negative reversed causal effect to supervisor support and colleague support. Engagement showed only one significant result, i.e. a small negative reversed causal relationship with supervisor support. To achieve the third objective, a cross-sectional design was used (n = 7 895). Results for logistic regression analyses showed that an increase in burnout was associated with a significant increase in the estimated odds for reporting an affirmative answer for receiving treatment for any of the health conditions, i.e. cardiovascular conditions, cholesterol, depression, diabetes, hypertension and irritable bowel syndrome. In contrast, an increase in engagement was associated with a decrease in affirmative reporting for cardiovascular conditions, cholesterol and depression; but not for diabetes, hypertension or irritable bowel syndrome. Addressing the link between burnout and financial outcomes was the fourth objective; and met with a cross-sectional design (n = 3 182). Participants were divided into a high and low burnout group based on the comorbidity of exhaustion and cynicism Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was implemented, controlling for age and gender, to investigate the difference in medical aid provider expenditure of the two groups. Results revealed that expenditure in the high burnout group was consistently more in all cases, compared to the low burnout group. By way of conclusion, the implications of the research were discussed and recommendations for managers and for future research were made.

Abstract:
Leaders engaging in controlling leadership behaviours (CLB) has been connected to followers perceiving their basic needs thwarted. However, little research has been made in the organizational field to understand the implications of controlling leadership behaviours for employee well-being. The present study aimed to clarify this relation through understanding controlling leadership behaviours’ influence on employee health, as well as investigate the impact of both leader and employee gender on employees’ perception of  controlling leadership behaviours. A sample of 818 employees, representing the Swedish labour market, completed a questionnaire including measures of perceived controlling leadership behaviours and well-being in terms of self-rated health, burnout, self-rated job satisfaction and vigour. Results confirmed the notion that leaders’ controlling leadership behaviours, like other negative leadership behaviours, is associated with lowered well-being. Results also indicate that male employees perceive male leaders as more controlling than female employees do, while female leaders are perceived as equally controlling by both male and female employees. The gender of leaders exhibiting controlling leadership behaviours seem to have no association with employee well-being. The implications of gender on controlling leadership behaviours is still a question unanswered. Future studies should therefore continue exploring both leader and employee gender influence on CLB.

Abstract:
Burnout ant its distinctive symptoms affect the individual at work. In this research, an inversion of perspective is proposed: rather than studying burnout as a set of individual symptoms, we analyze the processes of which burnout itself would be the symptom. To this end, organizational psychoanalysis sets a theoretical framework, utilizing data obtained from clinical approach-based methods. The theorization aim is pursued using grounded theory. The outcome of this research is a concept we named “terrideality”: a closed system of subjective processes which allies terror (terr-) and idealization (-ideal-), creating a phantasmatic reality (-eality), a “promised land” where rating is the totem. This system corresponds to six distinctive unconscious injunctions: “Always more is the one ideal”, “The meter is what matters”, “All things must disappear in an endless acceleration of time and space”, “Go superhero, or begone”, “If you have a problem, you are a problem” and “Anything is possible with solutions”. They cluster to form a tyrannical grip, relayed by management techniques. In this social imaginary, the more the subject is unconsciously terrified in his environment, the more he needs to idealize it. These dynamics result in a blind rush forward, supported by a collective denial of any limits and by a confusion between said idealization and the norm. These results provide an understanding of the unconscious processes seen in some organizations, and call for major transformations in them. They provide the means to support individuals, groups and organizations in preventing and recovering from burnout, as well as other hypermodern issues

Abstract:
With the rise of "helicopter" parents within primary and secondary education, school officials nationwide have started to address how to manage parental involvement in the educational system, specifically with regard to parent-teacher communication. Beginning in the 1980s, school administrators actively implemented programs targeting increased parental involvement in K-12 public schools, though the use of contact and relationship building strategies, in order to substantiate school-teacher-parent communication and further parental influence over decision making processes. While administrators and parents may view parent-teacher interactions as productive, teachers' negative experiences with parents may lead to stress, burnout, and attrition. Researchers have indicated that between 20 and 50% of first through third year teachers leave the profession due to increased, long-term stress, unrealistic workload, and an overall feeling of decreased personal and professional fulfillment. Likewise, through educational reform initiatives to standardize curriculum and increase parental involvement within public schools, teachers' roles within the educational system have shifted from positions of power, to figureheads for the system. The purpose of this study is to examine public school K-12 teachers' standpoints as they relate to parent-teacher communication.

Abstract:
Background: The relation between work motivation and well-being are relatively well theoretically entrenched, but few studies have been conducted on nurses within psychiatry. Objective: The aim of the present study was to examine the differences in intrinsic work motivation (autonomy, competence, relatedness), mental health and burnout between young (≤40 years) and older (>40 years) nurses employed in psychiatry. Method: The study was an observational study with a cross-sectional design and group comparisons, conducted as a survey. The sample constituted of 60 employed nurses. Chi2 analysis, ANOVA, t-test and linear regression analyses were conducted in SPSS (22,0). Result: Nurses had a relatively high intrinsic work motivation. Autonomy (M = 4,73) was estimated significantly lowest. Moreover, autonomy was estimated significantly higher in the younger (M = 5,02, SD = 0,77) than in the older (M = 4,55, SD = 0,81) group. There was a significant relationship between competence and mental well-being in both groups and a significant relationship between competence and burnout in the older group. Conclusion: The study showed that there were differences in how older and younger nurses reported motivation. Thus, in order to improve mental health among nurses it is necessary to focus on competence development in the work.

Abstract:
Unmanaged stress in teachers often triggers burnout, which leads to a rise in healthcare costs and absenteeism. Therefore, teachers' resiliency needs improvement to lower the risk of burnout. The purpose of this cross-sectional design study was to examine the relationship between mindfulness techniques and resilience in high school teachers. An additional purpose of this study was to examine if the personality trait, conscientiousness, moderates the relationship between mindfulness techniques and resilience. The frameworks for this study were based on the self-awareness, -regulation, and -transcendence (S-ART) framework, theory of planned behavior, and the concepts of resilience and job burnout. Four surveys were used to gather data from 133 high school teachers to understand the relationship between mindfulness techniques and resilience as well as how conscientiousness moderates the relationship. Multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the data. This study found a significant relationship between mindfulness techniques and resilience in high school teachers. Additionally, this study found that conscientiousness does not significantly moderate the relationship between mindfulness techniques and resilience in high school teachers. The results of this study might be used to create a professional development tool for teachers to help them learn how to increase the quality of classroom interactions. The outcome may be a more positive social, academic environment for students as well as teachers, based on the encouraged use of mindfulness techniques.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This research examined the effects of motivation on the well-being of humanitarian health workers. Using Self-Determination Theory, I argued introjected and identified motivations were applicable to this occupational domain, and have differential effects on well-being. Introjected motivation would be positively related to hedonic well-being and burnout, while identified motivation would be positively related to eudaimonic well-being and vitality. Orientations to happiness and passion were proposed as mediating these relationships. An online quantitative questionnaire was used in the first phase of data collection. Respondents were N = 82 humanitarian health workers. A semi-structured interview methodology was used in the second phase. Participants were N = 5 humanitarian health workers. Path analyses revealed neither introjected nor identified motivation was significantly related to vitality or hedonic vs. eudaimonic well-being. Both motivations had significant direct effects on burnout, albeit in the opposite direction to hypotheses. Passion moderated the relationship between motivation and burnout. Additional path analyses showed obsessive passion mediated the path between introjected motivation and emotional exhaustion. Harmonious passion mediated the path between identified motivation and diminished personal accomplishment. Both obsessive and harmonious passion mediated the paths between each motivation and depersonalisation, although identified motivation had the strongest relationship with this aspect of burnout. Interview data supported the majority of quantitative findings. The results suggest the motivations underlying engagement in humanitarian work, are related to the development of burnout. The mediational effect of passion determines which aspect of burnout will be most prevalent. The findings have applicability to the design and implementation of recruitment strategies, and programs aimed at the treatment and prevention of burnout in workers, both pre- and post-deployment to humanitarian situations.

Abstract:
According to grounded theory methodology 32 psychodiagnostic assessments of compensation claimants who present with complaints of bullying, burnout or work related stress. Data analysis shows possible new theoretical hypothesis about intrapsychic dynamics and characteristics involved in coping with occupational stressor. Resilience and life-long developmental theories fit with data and emerging hypothesis. This theoretical development and traditional research approach in fields like clinical psychology, social psychology and forensic medicine, when integrated on each other give new prospectives, research hypothesis and working proposals. At the same time a single case study is analyzed. A 3 years long monitoring of a bullying victim started up at the end of the harassment and concluded 2 years after the end of a Cognitive and Behavioural Therapy.

Abstract:
The background to this thesis is the dramatic increase of the long-term sickness absence that took place in Sweden from the late 1990s. There was also a shift in the diagnostic pattern with rising mental diagnoses. The overall purpose was to describe and try to understand the process leading to long-term sickness absence from the perspective of the sickness absentees, in order to get a better knowledge base for preventive and rehabilitative actions. The thesis comprises four studies (I-IV). Research methods have been both qualitative and quantitative. In study I data from individual interviews with 32 persons on long-term sick leave due to burnout was analyzed using a grounded theory approach. In study II the study population comprised of 2064 employed sick-listed persons, a sub sample derived from the 2002 national Swedish survey on health, working conditions, life situation and sick-listing. It was analyzed if persons with burnout had higher probability of having experienced the steps in the burnout staircase compared to other diagnostic groups in accordance with the previously suggested hypothesis of "the burnout staircase". Study III comprised of 2521 employed persons, a sub sample derived from the same national survey as in study II. It was analyzed if psychosocial work environment and conflicts and losses in private life independently or in combination were more strongly associated to sickness absence with mental diagnoses as compared to a healthy population. In study IV individual interviews with 25 professional rehabilitation actors and 14 unemployed sick-listed persons were conducted. Data were analyzed according to grounded theory method. The process that led to sicknes absence can be described as an emotional deprivation process, illustrated as a flight of stairs (the burnout staircase) describing a sequence of steps toward sickness absence (I). In accordance with the tested hypothesis persons with burnout to a noticeable higher extent reported expereince of being in the different steps in the burnout staircase compared to sickness absentees with other diagnoses. The model seemed to be valid also for persons with other mental diagnoses (II). Reorganization and conflicts at work as well as adding adverse private life events were associated with increased risk for sickness absence with mental diagnosis (III). Three significant factors behind the weak co-operation between local social insurance and employment agencies were identified: indistinct regulation of co-operation, shifting political goals over time and conflicting goals between agencies (IV). In this thesis it has been suggested that the course of events preceding sickness absence might be understood as a process of emotional deprivation, where the individual is gradually emptied of the life-giving emotional energy revealed in joy, commitment, and empathy. This life-giving force finds its nourishment in safe and secure social relations with others and in a social structure that promotes this type of social relations. The profound changes in the Swedish labour market during the 1990s influenced not just the psychosocial work climate but also the rehabilitation efforts for unemployed sick-listed persons. When the political goal of reducing the unemployment level came to the forefront the indistinct regulation and the conflicting goals in addition were factors that impaired co-ordinated rehabilitation. In this process also the physicians were involved. A labour market problem was turned into a medical problem.

Abstract:
The overall aim in this essay is to highlight and describe the social support and social pressure, people on sick leave for burnout feel they experience by their environment, both in terms of being on sick leave and in terms of return to work. The survey was conducted using qualitative methodology, and six people being sick for burnout were interviexed individually. The result shows that people on sick leave for burnout are experiencing a complex mixture of both social pressure and social support in the process of returning to work. Social support, often in the form of understanding for the disease and avoidance of pressure, are mostly experienced by people in the individual's near environment, while the pressure usually is related to individuals and groups at longer distances. The strongest pressure to return to work was experienced from the "societal" norm "to do the right thing", but also lack of krowledge and lack of understanding were experienced as a pressure to return to work.

Abstract:
Nuclear nonproliferation research and forensics have a need for improved software solutions, particularly in the estimates of the transmutation of nuclear fuel during burnup and depletion. At the same time, parallel computers have become effectively sized to enable full core simulations using highly-detailed 3d mesh models. In this work, the capability for modeling 3d reactor models is researched with PENBURN, a burnup/depletion code that couples to the PENTRAN Parallel Sn Transport Solver and also to the Monte Carlo solver MCNP5 using the multigroup option. This research is computationally focused, but will also compare a subset of results of experimental Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) burnup spectroscopy data available with a designated BR3 PWR burnup benchmark. Also, this research will analyze large-scale Cartesian mesh models that can be feasibly modeled for 3d burnup, as well as investigate the improvement of finite differencing schemes used in parallel discrete ordinates transport with PENTRAN, in order to optimize runtimes for full core transport simulation, and provide comparative results with Monte Carlo simulations. Also, the research will consider improvements to software that will be parallelized, further improving large model simulation using hybrid OpenMP-MPI. The core simulations that form the basis of this research, utilizing discrete ordinates methods and Monte Carlo methods to drive time and space dependent isotopic reactor production using the PENBURN code, will provide more accurate detail of fuel compositions that can benefit nuclear safety, fuel management, non-proliferation, and safeguards applications.

Abstract:
Improving computer technology and the desire to more accurately model the heterogeneity of the nuclear reactor environment have made the use of Monte Carlo depletion codes more attractive in recent years, and feasible (if not practical) even for 3-D depletion simulation. However, in this case statistical uncertainty is combined with error propagating through the calculation from previous steps. In an effort to understand this error propagation, four test problems were developed to test error propagation in the fuel assembly and core domains. Three test cases modeled and tracked individual fuel pins in four 17x17 PWR fuel assemblies. A fourth problem modeled a well-characterized 330MWe nuclear reactor core. By changing the code's initial random number seed, the data produced by a series of 19 replica runs of each test case was used to investigate the true and apparent variance in k-eff, pin powers, and number densities of several isotopes. While this study does not intend to develop a predictive model for error propagation, it is hoped that its results can help to identify some common regularities in the behavior of uncertainty in several key parameters.

There were already many studies about job burnout previously, few apply the theory of others areas to analyze characteristics of job burnout. Therefore, this study explained job burnout by analogizing with entropy that is popular notion of physics. And the researcher expected to manifest the importance of job burnout in the enterprises, individuals and families. About the data processing method, the Hartley entropy formula replaced the numeral of respondent with the information quantity. The data processing method can offer the meanings of scale data. Furthermore, Hartley entropy formula also solved the problem of Likert scale when items are combined to form a variable. Samples of this study are from the frontline employees in the service department.. Study samples were from 162 couples of the electronics and finances industry. The result showed that sources of the job burnout are work environment. And the job burnout also influences the marital burnout. Besides, the perception of social support of frontline employees in the service department owns the buffer ability to the link between work environment and job burnout. By study result, the researcher suggested that enterprises couldn''t attribute the reason of job burn out to individual''s factor or ignore the influence when frontline employees meet job burnout. Enterprises need survey work environment quality and are more positive responsible for the prevention and cure of job burnout so that Enterprises can mitigate the attacks of job burnout.

The impact of burnout on organizational commitment has been widely observed, while the impact of burnout on professional commitment has rarely been investigated. Since professional commitment has three distinct components: affective, continuance, and normative. Thus this study investigated how burnout impacts the three components of professional commitment. The spillover theory was used to develop hypotheses. The responses from 579 service providers were used for regression analyses. Analytical results indicated that burnout is negatively related to affective and normative professional commitment, but positively related to continuance professional commitment. Among the components, affective professional commitment has the strongest relation with burnout. Implications were provided for future research.

Taiwanese collegiate student-athletes in athletic performance department (CATs) have to undergo long training hours and face competition pressure very often. The purpose of this study was to explore the burnout experience of CATs. The study used grounded theory to explore burnout process and experience of 12 CATs (8 sports, 6 males and 6 females). Data were collected and analyzed based on the principles of grounded theory. The results consist two parts: the athletic burnout process and different types of athletic burnout. The burnout process consists of four turning points (engaging, doubting, confirming, and accepting) and three stages (enthusiastic, striving, and despairing). The status of athletic burnout could be divided into four different types (prisoner, explorer, new born and fatalist) in terms of autonomy and possession of goals. The findings integrated past athletic burnout theories into the athletic process and gave us a more thorough view of how athletic burnout was developed. The findings also provide college counselors information that increases their knowledge and enhances their conceptualization skills so that they can work more effectively with CATs who were in the burnout process or in burnout status.

Job burnout is a common phenomenon in modern society. This occupational disease, job burnout, causes serious vocational issues, which not only negatively affects the psychological status and job performance of the individual but also results severe manpower lost and brain drain problems in the corporate. Also, ardor of work of job burnout individuals is gradually decreasing under working pressure in the accumulation of negative emotion, which will result in low working efficiency and poor performance. It could be more worst if job burnout individuals take the passive attitude to against organizations or even the society. In this study, we not only investigate relationships between proactive personality and job burnout but also access moderating effects of perceived supervisor support and job self-determination on job burnout by utilizing the trait activation theory. In this study, we use T Bank financial management specialist as the study sample and 185 valid questionnaires are collected. Results of Hierarchical regression analyses of these valid questionnaires showed that: Proactive personality and job burnout has negative relationship. Perceived supervisor support can enhance the effect of proactive personality on job burnout, i.e., the more perceived supervisor support, the stronger the negative relationship between proactive personality and job burnout. Job self-determination can adjust the forecast effect of proactive personality for job burnout. In addition, Job self-determination will strengthen the effect of proactive personality on job burnout.

Considine, Jennifer Robin. "Delicious ambiguity? Organizational, interpersonal, and personal communication about spirituality at Hospice." 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/ETD-TAMU-1863.

Full text
Abstract:
While a great deal of theoretical work affirms the importance of spirituality in hospice care, the manner in which organizational members communicate about spirituality in hospice organizations, and most other health care organizations, remains under-explored and under-theorized. The purpose of this dissertation is twofold. First, this dissertation seeks to understand how hospice members talk about spirituality with one another and with care recipients. Second, this dissertation explores the antecedents and consequences of hospice members' communication strategies. To explore these issues, an ethnographic study was conducted in two branches of a mid-sized hospice. Over 200 hours of participant observation and 42 interviews were completed. Results showed that organizational discourse about spirituality was strategically ambiguous in response to multiple internal and external demands. Strategically ambiguous communication was successful in allowing for a wide range of actions and interpretations; however, it was also problematic in that it served as a source of discomfort and disconnection for some organizational members. Further, results demonstrated that communication about spirituality in interactions between care providers and care recipients was influenced by both organizational discourse and personal understandings of spirituality. Organizational and professional discourse and personal understandings created dialectical tensions between leading and following in care provider-care recipient interactions. Further analysis demonstrated five different strategies for managing the leading-following dialectic. Finally, results suggested that organizational discourses affected the personal identity and outcomes experienced by hospice workers. The preferred organizational identity of the "Gracious Servant" required hospice workers to perform spiritual labor which increased the care providers' propensity to experience stress and burnout. In total, these results demonstrate the importance of examining spirituality from an ecological perspective that considers community, organizational, and interpersonal discourse about spirituality.
