在香港國際學校,相較于本地學校,更加激烈的崗位競爭、英語為工作語言的整體環境以及背景多樣化的學生等因素是否會導致教師們對職業的認同感和成就感有所不同呢?瞭解國際學校中文教師職業倦怠的情況對教師的個人職業發展、教學工作的有效開展和學校的教師管理都具有重要意義。 本研究旨在對香港國際學校中文教師職業倦怠的情況進行調查,通過Maslash(MBI-ES)問卷,分三個維度(情緒衰竭、非個性化、低成就感)對中文教師職業倦怠的程度進行描述;其次,利用訪談對倦怠的原因和影響因素進行探討和分析。 本次調查採取方便取樣的原則,隨機抽取國際學校中文教師30 人進行調查,利用SPSS17.0 對數據進行整理和分析,組間的差異性采用方差分析(單因素ANOVA)和t 檢驗,人口學特征和職業倦怠各維度的關系采用線性回歸進行分析。 研究發現,香港國際學校的中文教師在情緒衰竭和去個性化兩個維度上表現出中度倦怠,而在低成就感上得分較高,即有較高的成就感體驗。不同性別的教師在倦怠程度上無差異; 不同年齡的教師在低成就感維度上差異顯著( P=0.000),本次調查中,20-30 歲的教師成就感最低,50 歲或以上的教師最有成就感;從入職時間上看,有1-2 年工作經驗的教師有相對高的情感衰竭情況(22.00±6.06);不同入職時間的教師在成就感上差異顯著(P= 0.018),從事對外漢語教學工作3 年或以下的教師成就感低於有3 年以上工作經驗的教師。此外,學歷與成就感表現出顯著相關(B=3.195,P=0.034),學歷越高在教學上的成就感體驗也就越高;同時,香港以外的教學經驗與成就感呈現顯著相關( B=2.253,P=0.05),即教學經驗豐富的教師擁有相對高的成就感。 This study assessed teachers' burnout from different genders, ages, working years, educational levels, working hours and working experience in a sample of 30 Chinese in-service teachers in Hong Kong International Schools by MBI-ES questionnaire and interviews and draw conclusions as follows: The general findings suggested that on the burnout components, indicating moderate levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, but high or nearly high levels of reduced personal accomplishment. Teachers' reduced personal accomplishment is significant in age( P= 0.000 ) and working years( P= 0.018): teachers of 20-30 years old have the highest scores in reduced personal accomplishment and teachers of 50 years old or above have the lowest scores; teachers with less 3 years working experience have the highest scores in reduced personal accomplishment. What's more, overseas teaching experience and educational levels are highly relevant with reduced personal accomplishment.

Abstract:
Using Bums Bog as a case study, this project aims to illustrate the environmental and social importance of ecological restoration, to research the physical methods of bog restoration, and to design a simple visitor centre and recreation trail network. Burns Bog is a raised peat bog with a distinctive chemistry, form, flora, and large size that make it globally unique. The Bog may soon be protected as park or open space by a government purchase of a large portion of its land mass. Burns Bog has been disturbed in the past, primarily by peat extraction, and requires both restoration and management to ensure its long-term viability. Restoration in this thesis is divided into hydrology and vegetation. The key issue regarding hydrology is the loss of water through drainage ditches. I recommend that all ditches be properly blocked and that a number of sites in the Bog be rewetted using other methods, such as bunding and peat removal, to raise the water table level. The existing composition of plant communities in Burns Bog is very diverse, due to the results of past disturbances. I propose vegetative restoration for a number of sites in the Bog. I also suggest that the current level of plant community diversity is valuable for wildlife habitat and future tourism, and recommend that managers maintain this diversity within the foreseeable future (50-100 years). The last portion of this thesis is a proposal for a visitor centre and trail system design, the purpose of which is to allow maximum public access to Burns Bog while minimizing impact on the bog ecosystem.

Abstract:
Burns Bog (the Bog) is a 2800 ha protected peatland in Delta, British Columbia. Globally unique due to its form, size, chemistry, flora and fauna the Bog is distinct and managed as a wetland. In 2005, a large fire consumed 200 ha of peatland after which birch (Betula pendula) and pine (Pinus contorta) trees grew in great densities. Within the fire zone piezometers were installed to monitor water levels below the surface. A high water level promotes peat-forming processes and in 2009 water levels dropped significantly. In 2010, a 75m x 50m experimental plot within the fire zone was cleared of birch and pine trees to investigate the impacts of tree removal on bog hydrology and plant communities. Higher water levels and positive bog plant growth at the experimental site was observed in 2010 and 2011 when compared to the control site where trees remained intact.

Burns Bog covers approximately 3,000 hectares between the Fraser River and Boundary Bay in Delta, BC. An ecologically unique ecosystem, its hydrology and ecology have been widely disturbed. Hydrology strongly shapes the character and distribution of vegetation and Sphagnum growth. This study investigated measures of hydrology, including water table residence times and cumulative moisture deficits, to quantify intuitive relationships between moisture stress and ecological zones. Regression analysis of quantitative field observations reveal statistically significant relationships between cumulative moisture deficits and several key bog plant species and Lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) diameter at breast height, signifying that these relationships can be used to predict the potential for vegetation recovery. Sphagnum height measurements reveal the unexpected observation that most growth occurs during the cool moist winter and early spring. This study contributes to the hydrological management of Burns Bog and will help to guide the location and mechanisms of restoration efforts.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of environmental non-government organizations in relation to the role and responsibility of government for wetland conservation in British Columbia. The role of a small community-based environmental organization called the Burns Bog Conservation Society in decisions about Burns Bog, a large privately-owned wetland located in the Lower Mainland, is analyzed. Drawing from a broad range of literature on environmentalism and conservation, the thesis begins with an historical account of the environmental movement, giving a broad view of environmental conservation and the role of environmental organizations. A typology of roles and analytical framework is subsequently derived from a study of environmental non-government organizations involved in managing water resources in British Columbia's Fraser River Basin. Three main roles, advocacy, supplemental and transformative, are discussed as they relate to activities prior to and during the Burns Bog Analysis, a provincially established land use study of Burns Bog. This research found that a small community-based environmental organization, through advocacy, can ensure that ecological integrity is not neglected as a result of poor planning and decision-making. The case study demonstrates that a small environmental organization can pressure governments to broaden their view of land-use and environmental issues, assuring more informed decision-making. An environmental organization can also supplement the regular roles and responsibilities of government, first by supplying a service that government is unable or unwilling to provide, and second by participating in and legitimizing consensus-based decision-making processes. The case study demonstrates how a small environmental organization can provide and review information and participate in creating options and solutions in land-use decisions. Finally, an environmental organization can influence, overtime, the fundamental restructuring of government planning and decision-making processes and transform the way society thinks and operates. The thesis concludes that environmental non-government organizations have an important role to play in ensuring the recognition and conservation of British Columbia's wetlands in government planning and decision-making processes; in informing and educating government and the public about ecological systems and their values; and in counter-balancing strong economic, political and development interests.

Abstract:
Landfill gas represents either a significant contributor to the build-up of greenhouse gases in the troposphere when released, or a potential energy source when recovered. An analysis of variation in landfill gas production and composition (%CH₄, %C0₂) in response to variations in ambient temperature, precipitation, barometric pressure and refuse age was carried out at the Vancouver Landfill Site at Burns Bog, located in Delta, B.C.. Results indicate that precipitation is a predominant factor, as illustrated in the relationship between cumulative precipitation 14 days prior to sampling and CH₄ generation (mean r2=0.88). This finding suggests that a time lag is in effect wherein the moisture acts to enhance the anaerobic nature of the niche, increase the mixing and availability of carbon rich organic matter and nutrients, directly stimulate bacterial growth and dilute metabolic inhibitors, leading to increased CH₄ production. Ambient temperature displayed only a moderate correlation with CH₄ production (mean r2=0.41), likely due to the establishment of a relatively consistent microclimate within the waste matrix. High gas temperatures were observed to correspond with periods of peak CH₄ production. Fluctuations in barometric pressure were not seen to have an effect on landfill gas production at the p=0.05 level of significance. Refuse age showed some relationship to CH₄ production, but results of this were inconclusive. Regression equations were calculated to predict CH₄ production from the sample gas ports and gas collection lines. Total annual CH₄ production from this site was calculated to be 44.76 kT, which equates to approximately 3% of the total CH₄ produced by landfills in Canada. Results suggest that the potential does exist for the optimization of waste degradation within the matrix. The production ratio of CH₄:C0₂ showed a strong relationship to cumulative precipitation 7-days prior to sampling (r2=0.85), with the relatively high ratio following periods of heavy rainfall. It is likely that conditions of low hydraulic retention time cause the CO₂ to be dissolved from the matrix and flushed downward with the movement of the leachate. It is also possible that the CO₂ acts as an end-product inhibitor during acetate and propionate degradation; its decreased partial pressures after periods of heavy rainfall would thus favour enhanced CH₄ production. Leachate parameters displayed high variability. COD concentrations were observed to decrease following heavy rainfall. Loadings of both NH4 + -N and acetic acid were observed to increase with higher precipitation inputs, most likely due to the increased mobilization of the substances. Both NH4 + -N and acetic acid loadings were found to increase significantly with increasing CH₄ production. Once again, it is likely that the "washing" of the matrix following periods of heavy rainfall (and increased CH₄ production) is responsible for this observation.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to present a method for detection of faults (burn marks) on insulator using only image processing algorithms. It is accomplished by extracting the insulator from the background image and then detecting the burn marks on the segmented image. Apart from several other challenges encountered during the detection phase, the main challenge was to eliminate the connector marks which might be detected as burn-marks. The technique discussed in this thesis work is one of a kind and not much research has been done in areas of burn mark detection on the insulator surface. Several algorithms have been pondered upon before coming up with a set of algorithms applied in a particular manner. The first phase of the work emphasizes on detection of the insulator from the image. Apart from pre-processing and other segmentation techniques, Symmetry detection and adaptive GrabCut are the main algorithms used for this purpose. Efficient and powerful algorithms such as feature detection and matching were considered before arriving at this method, based on pros and cons. The second phase is the detection of burn marks on the extracted image while eliminating the connector marks. Algorithms such as Blob detection and Contour detection, adapted in a particular manner, have been used for this purpose based on references from medical image processing. The elimination of connector marks is obtained by applying a set of mathematical calculations. The entire project is implemented in Visual Studio using OpenCV libraries. Result obtained is cross-validated across an image data set.
