Social media is becoming increasingly important in society and culture, empowering consumers to group together on common interests and share opinions through the Internet. The social web shifts the originators of content from companies to users. Differences caused by this dynamic result in existing web analytic techniques being inadequate. Because people reveal their thoughts and preferences in social media, there are significant opportunities in business intelligence by analyzing social media. These opportunities include brand monitoring; trend recognition, and targeted advertising. The market for social media analytics in business intelligence is further validated by its direct application in the consumer research market. Challenges lie ahead for development and adoption of social media analytics. Technology used in these analytics, such as natural language processing and social network analysis, need to mature to improve accuracy, performance, and scalability. Nevertheless, social media continues to grow at a rapid pace, and organizations should form strategies to incorporate social media analytics into their business intelligence frameworks.

Mobile web applications refer to web applications on mobile devices, aimed at personalizing, integrating, and discovering mobile contents in user contexts. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of mobile web applications by proposing a new taxonomy for mobile web applications, and conducting a business analysis in the field of mobile web applications. The thesis reviews the current surrounding environment for mobile web applications, namely, web 2.0 and 3.0, wireless communication technology, and Smartphone platform. The recent entry and success of Apple's iPhone greatly enhanced the public awareness of the Smartphone technology. Google's release of open-source Android platform and T-Mobile's deployment of Android-powered "Dream" Smartphone not only intensify the competition among suppliers, but also provide an open-source foundation for mobile web applications. This thesis introduces a new mobile web application taxonomy to systematically study the values and the groupings of the mobile web applications. By introducing features and categories, the taxonomy provides a framework so the related companies and businesses can be comparatively analyzed and summarized. Selected case companies are studied in the light of the taxonomy. The thesis discusses the key issues of mobile web aggregation, namely, mobile application development platform, context modeling, mobile user interface, mobile application logic, and mobile web aggregation strategy.

The volume of information generated from enterprise applications is growing exponentially, and the cost of storage is decreasing rapidly. In addition, cloud-based applications, mobile devices and social networks are becoming relevant sources of unstructured data that provide essential information for strategic decisions making. Therefore, with time, enterprise databases will become more valuable for business but also much harder to integrate, process and analyze. Business Intelligence software was instrumental in helping organizations to analyze information and provide reports to support business decision-making. Accordingly, BI applications evolved as enterprise information grew, hardware-processing capacities developed, and storage cost is being reduced significantly. In this paper, we will analyze the current BI world market and compare it with the Chilean market, in order to come up with business plan recommendations for local developers and systems integrators interested in capitalizing the opportunities generated by the global BI software market consolidation.

Full textNetworks constitute an integral part of our lives. One of the most important communication networks is the Internet which led to large changes in everyday life, which are examined in part in this dissertation. Overall, the present dissertation is subdivided into three areas, which are based on the traditional three dimensions of information systems, comprising perspectives technology, management and organization. At the core of this dissertation is the technological perspective, centered on an analysis of the structure and robustness of the Internet network using the mathematical-methodical aspect of graph theory. The second part of the thesis deals with the management perspective. The focus lies on the understanding and prediction of user behavior in the e-commerce context utilizing methods of predictive modeling. The third area includes the organizational perspective from the point of view of users. Here, two specific sub-areas are selected. The first sub-area revolves around social media websites, with the goal of understanding how sub-groups of users utilize them in different ways. The second area is centered around the aspect of how the propagation of mobile devices influences individuals in their personal and professional environments. Based on these three perspectives, a total of 18 studies were conducted within the scope of this dissertation, using different methodological applications to gain scientific insights with respect to the areas examined.

Full textThis paper is about the importance of culture in the usage of business applications and how they function outside their original context. When involved in an environment that has different culture or value than yours, it is important to live and interact on a high level with the group of people or company that you are in project with because we believe that it will help you to understand and value the culture you are working with. Let it be known that it is important for the consultant or the programmer to be patient and open minded towards new learning experiences or else they will stumble on their own feet whether it is national culture or business culture.
We will do our study with the help of a qualitative research in a company with international experience located in Iran where we will make interviews over the phone with the help of semi-structured interview method. The conversations will then be recorded with a record player in order to gain high reliability. The difference between national and business culture as the way we understand it is that national culture consists of so many different aspects and is both inherited and learned. It also involves heroes, symbols, religious beliefs and rituals while business culture is less complex in the comparance. Although heroes and rituals exists in business culture as well, but the main difference is that you can change a business culture more easily than you can with a national culture. This conclusion is based on our empirical findings were we noticed that you can change the business culture through modernization, like our case study were they renewed their IS.
We come to the conclusion that it is essential for the company to have a developer who understand the companys’ needs and demands and develop business applications that can satisfy the companys’ wishes according to the existing and new norms. These norms are often set by IC: s. and developers in DC: s following them as best as they possibly can. Some of them are more successfull than others, and that is due to their cooperations with companies in IC: s. We must not forget that even though the majority of companies in Iran uses only native applications they still are mostly influenced from IC: s methodology.
As shown through our analysis and our conclusions the main reason for a business application to fail is cultural barriers where we have mentioned language, values, logics and business culture. Besides the national laws and business mentalities are also factors playing important rolls. All of these factors lead to the situation where it is insupportable to use a foreign business application. It is also very important that the consultant developing the business application has a solid understanding about the cultural differences, and a strong knowledge base about different kinds of business applications.

Full textDue to the pressure of hyper competitive markets, companies are forced to constantly search for improvements in their range of products and services. The success key is to be proactive and implement strategies that value innovation trough business processes and diversification of products and services. The ideal situation is when real
added values are offered to customers.
This Master Thesis, as a practice oriented project, analyzes the feasibility of a new business concept “Smart storage”, and aims to identify the existence of a real opportunity. It not only provides a practical solution to a case regarding innovation trough product diversification, but also shows the detailed processes that were used to solve it.
There were several phases in the project. The first phase included ideas generation(the discovery of different applications for the business idea); valuable information resulted
from brain storming sessions, focus groups and whishing and bug-lists of creative techniques. It was also necessary to run meetings with the consultant who is working close to the company that wants launch the new product and the Company itself. Once we come up with different applications, it was necessary to gather information about their attractiveness which constitutes the second phase of the study. In
this case we contacted several organizations and information resulted from interviews, internet search, telephone calls, e-mails and observation. The empirical data gathering phase was extremely important for the analysis of the project. Finally, for data analysis and its interpretation, we used the Feasibility analysis framework.
The conclusion points out that there is a great potential for starting a “Smart storage for Stadsarkivet-usage” project with public archive institutions. However further studies should be taken place in order to complete the feasibility analysis.

Vaikutuksia perustellaan tuloksilla, joita tämän projektin osana tehty kysely paljasti. Tiedon langatonta synkronisointia tarkastellaan esimerkkinä tilapäisestä middlewaresta. Mobiileihin tiedostojärjestelmiin liittyvät asiat nähdään mielenkiintoisena mahdollisuutena yrityssovelluksille. Toimistojärjestelmien etäkäyttömahdollisuuksia on tutkittu ja niiden sopivuutta langattomaan sovellustarjontaan on mitattu. Kehittyviä mobiileja Java-teknologioita pidetään tehokkaana alustana, jonka avulla voidaan tarjota kaikkialla saatavilla olevia, päätelaiteriippumattomia ratkaisuja loppuasiakkaille. Yhtenä suositelluista strategioista tämä diplomityö esittelee yksinkertaisen päätelaitesovellusmallin, jonka avulla nykyisistä middleware-ratkaisuista voidaan siirtyä tulevaisuuden kehittyneempiin päätelaiteratkaisuihin kahden vuoden sisällä. Tähän konseptiin perustuen työssä on kehitetty esimerkki 3G-älypuhelimen sovelluksesta. Tutkimus tuo esille, miten Smartnerin nykyiset sovellukset huomioon ottaen tarvitaan valtava teknologinen suunnanmuutos pitkäaikaisen perspektiivin säilyttämiseksi.

With vast improvements in computational power, increased accessibility to big data, and rapid innovations in computing algorithms, the use of neural networks for both engineering and business purposes was met with a renewed interest beginning in early 2000s. Amidst substantial development, the Softplus and Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) activation functions were introduced in 2000 and 2001 respectively, with the latter emerging as the more popular choice of activation function in neural networks. Notably, the ReLU activation function maintains a high degree of gradient propagation while presenting greater model sparsity and computational efficiency over Softplus. As an alternative to the ReLU, a family of a modified Softplus activation function - the "Smoothing" activation function of the form g(z) = [mu] log(1 + e[superscript z/[mu]) has been proposed. Theoretically, the Smoothing activation function will leverage the high degree of gradient propagation and model simplicity characteristic of the ReLU function, while eliminating possible issues associated with the non-differentiability of ReLU about the origin. In this research, the performance of the Smoothing family of activation functions vis-à-vis the ReLU activation function will be examined.
