Brinkmann, Daniel. "Strategic capability through business intelligence applications." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2015. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/2736/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the potential strategic capability that can be improved from the deployment of business intelligence (BI) applications. AOK Niedersachsen (AOKN), a German health insurance company in the north of Germany (Lower-Saxony), is used as the case study for primary qualitative research and analysis. For many years, information and data have been considered even “factors of production” for companies; but data and information have become more complex, requiring processing and structural analysis to get the needed transparency in the company. Data from different operational sources must be extracted and structured to provide information for management accounting employees, top management, and end-users throughout an organization. In the healthcare industry, BI systems have played a crucial role for decades. For organizations such as AOKN, the application of BI tools and technologies can create and support sustainable capability. Several research questions are answered in this thesis through structured one-to-one interviews with different AOKN employees, and the resulting analysis of interview data. A qualitative approach to this case study is used, allowing the researcher to get in-depth information about a specific context. When case studies are conducted, the one-to-one interview is considered to be an optimal instrument and a significant source of evidence. BI technologies and tools are classified within an appropriate conceptual framework which integrates the complex BI demands and structures of AOKN, identifying different components as part of the framework - systems infrastructure, data provision, reporting, and information receiver. The framework is further enhanced by four factors of a competitive advantage model drawn from existing literature to develop capabilities. The use and integration of BI technologies and tools in the strategy development process are then analyzed. Different BI tools, that have an important function during the whole strategy process, are recommended for each strategy phase. The final area of research examines the possible addition of new functions and solutions to current BI technologies and tools to enhance the potential of these systems in gaining capabilities. Research findings encompass system access, report characteristics, and BI end users profiles and capabilities. To this end, a structured model gives examples of practical AOKN BI projects that have generated strategic capabilities for the organization. At the end, the conclusion chapter stresses the needs of contribution to knowledge (theory and practice).

Social media is becoming increasingly important in society and culture, empowering consumers to group together on common interests and share opinions through the Internet. The social web shifts the originators of content from companies to users. Differences caused by this dynamic result in existing web analytic techniques being inadequate. Because people reveal their thoughts and preferences in social media, there are significant opportunities in business intelligence by analyzing social media. These opportunities include brand monitoring; trend recognition, and targeted advertising. The market for social media analytics in business intelligence is further validated by its direct application in the consumer research market. Challenges lie ahead for development and adoption of social media analytics. Technology used in these analytics, such as natural language processing and social network analysis, need to mature to improve accuracy, performance, and scalability. Nevertheless, social media continues to grow at a rapid pace, and organizations should form strategies to incorporate social media analytics into their business intelligence frameworks.

Awarded by:University of New South Wales. School of Information Systems Technology and Management, 2005. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/22047.

Full text
Abstract:
With the widespread use of the Internet and its associated technologies, enterprises have to evolve in the way they are conducting business. 'e-business applications' refer to a new class of distributed applications that involves the Internet as a communication platform. Each e-business application supports the full automation of business processes that can span across multiple enterprises. For a given application domain that involves e-business application development, a number of design decisions that best fullfil stakeholders requirements have to be made. One important issue is the reuse of functionality which exists within legacy systems that can belong to one or more enterprises within the same domain. Most existing design approaches are inadequate in supporting the exploration of all design combinations. Moreover, there is little work on how to identify the best design decisions systematically for a given application domain. In this thesis we present a pattern-based approach that addresses the architectural design of e-business applications. We identify a number of architectural patterns whose instantiation on a given design problem correspond to different architectural design alternatives. We also identify models that enable the estimation of quality attributes for such alternatives. Then we investigate and utilise methods to select the best pattern for a given design problem. We also describe the process of generating the alternative architectures, estimating their qualities, and then ranking them with respect to any quality attribute or a combination of quality attributes. We validate this approach on a real life case study in the area of capital markets. The case study concerns realistic e-business applications that rely on existing legacy applications. The validation exercise has produced predictions which have been compared with actual design decisions that have been made. The thesis also proposes a framework for the systematic identification of architectural patterns. An additional set of architectural patterns and their impact on the case study are discussed. The main contribution of this thesis is in the identification of patterns and quality attributes models for the architectural design of e-business applications that aid in the systematic selection of the most appropriate architectural pattern for a given problem context.

Wong, Peter Yung Ho. "Formalisations and applications of business process modelling notation." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.555361.

Full text
Abstract:
Business Process Modelling Notation (BPMN) is a standardised diagram notation for modelling interactive workflow processes graphically at the design stage. The primary objective of this thesis is to provide a framework for precise specifications and formal verifications of workflow processes modelled as BPMN diagrams. We provide two behavioural semantics for BPMN in the process algebra Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP). We apply existing CSP refinement orderings to both the refinement of business process diagrams and the verification of behavioural compatibility of business process collaborations. The first semantic model is an untimed model, focusing on the control flow and communication of business processes. The second semantic model extends the first one to capture the timing aspect of behaviour. We also consider the applications of the semantic models. The secondary objective of this thesis is to apply BPMN and the semantic models to reason about long running empirical studies (e.g. laboratory experiments, clinical trials). We introduce a declarative workflow model Empiricol for recording trials and experiments precisely, and define bidirectional transformation functions between BPMN and Empiricol. Using the transformation functions, we make graphical specification, simulation, automation and verification of trials and experiments possible. We provide two case studies on the applications of BPMN’s formalisations.

Abstract:
To a rapidly increasing degree, traditional organizational structures evolve in large parts of the world towards online business using modern Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capabilities. For efficient applications of inter-organizational information systems, the alignment between business and ICT is a key factor. In this context, business analysis using business modelling can be regarded as a first step in designing economically sustainable e-business solutions. This thesis examines how business modeling can be used to improve e-business design. We examine how business stakeholder intentions and different objectives of business collaborations can be used to obtain an explorative business model that can be used as a basis for designing e-business solutions. The thesis proposes a set of artifacts for business modeling and e-service design. In regard to business modeling, we propose methods that consider internal aspects such as strategic intentions of actors and external aspects such as business collaborations among them. Considering stakeholder intentions, we introduce a method to design business models based on goal models. A set of templates for designing goal models and a set of transformation rules to obtain business models based on goal models are proposed. To further improve business models considering business collaborations, we suggest a classification of business transactions that considers underlying business objectives of business collaborations. Utilizing the suggested business transactions, we then propose a method to improve business modeling. Finally, we propose a method for designing e-services using business models. The methods suggested support business modelers as well as process and services designers in executing their tasks effectively. The methods have been assessed through applications in two cases.

The volume of information generated from enterprise applications is growing exponentially, and the cost of storage is decreasing rapidly. In addition, cloud-based applications, mobile devices and social networks are becoming relevant sources of unstructured data that provide essential information for strategic decisions making. Therefore, with time, enterprise databases will become more valuable for business but also much harder to integrate, process and analyze. Business Intelligence software was instrumental in helping organizations to analyze information and provide reports to support business decision-making. Accordingly, BI applications evolved as enterprise information grew, hardware-processing capacities developed, and storage cost is being reduced significantly. In this paper, we will analyze the current BI world market and compare it with the Chilean market, in order to come up with business plan recommendations for local developers and systems integrators interested in capitalizing the opportunities generated by the global BI software market consolidation.

Abstract:
The arrival of the Big Data era has become a major topic of discussion in many sectors because of the premises of big data utilizations and its impact on decision-making. It is an interdisciplinary issue that has captured the attention of scholars and created new research opportunities in information science, business, heath care, and many others fields. The problem is the Big Data is not well defined, so that there exists confusion in IT what jobs and skill sets are required in big data area. The problem stems from the newness of the Big Data profession. Because many aspects of the area are unknown, organizations do not yet possess the IT, human, and business resources necessary to cope with and benefit from big data. These organizations include health care, enterprise, logistics, universities, weather forecasting, oil companies, e-business, recruiting agencies etc., and are challenged to deal with high volume, high variety, and high velocity big data to facilitate better decision- making. This research proposes a new way to look at Big Data and Big Data analysis. It helps and meets the theoretical and methodological foundations of Big Data and addresses an increasing demand for more powerful Big Data analysis from the academic researches prospective. Essay 1 provides a strategic overview of the untapped potential of social media Big Data in the business world and describes its challenges and opportunities for aspiring business organizations. It also aims to offer fresh recommendations on how companies can exploit social media data analysis to make better business decisions—decisions that embrace the relevant social qualities of its customers and their related ecosystem. The goal of this research is to provide insights for businesses to make better, more informed decisions based on effective social media data analysis. Essay 2 provides a better understanding of the influence of social media during the 2016 American presidential election and develops a model to examine individuals' attitudes toward participating in social media (SM) discussions that might influence their decision in choosing between the two presidential election candidates, Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. The goal of this research is to provide a theoretical foundation that supports the influence of social media on individual's decisions. Essay 3 defines the major job descriptions for careers in the new Big Data profession. It to describe the Big Data professional profile as reflected by the demand side, and explains the differences and commonalities between company-posted job requirements for data analytics, business analytics, and data scientists jobs. The main aim for this work is to clarify of the skill requirements for Big Data professionals for the joint benefit of the job market where they will be employed and of academia, where such professionals will be prepared in data science programs, to aid in the entire process of preparing and recruiting for Big Data positions.

Abstract:
With the wide application of information technology in organizations, especially the rapid growth of E-Business, masses of data have been accumulated. Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) gives organizations the tools to sift through vast data stores to extract knowledge supporting organizational decision making. Most of the KDD research has assumed that data is static and focused on either efficiency improvement of the KDD process (e.g., designing more efficient KDD algorithms) or business applications of KDD. However, data is dynamic in reality (i.e., new data continuously added in). Knowledge discovered using KDD becomes obsolete rapidly, as the discovered knowledge only reflects the status of its dynamic data source when running KDD. Newly added data could bring in new knowledge or invalidate some discovered knowledge. To support effective decision making, knowledge discovered using KDD needs to be updated along with its dynamic data source. In this dissertation, we research on knowledge refreshing, which we define as the process to keep knowledge discovered using KDD up-to-date with its dynamic data source. We propose an analytical model based on the theory of Markov decision process, solutions and heuristics for the knowledge refreshing problem. We also research on how to apply KDD to such application areas as intelligent web portal design and network content management. The knowledge refreshing research identifies and solves a fundamental and general problem appearing in all KDD applications; while the applied KDD research provides a test environment for solutions resulted from the knowledge refreshing research.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis Business Intelligence in Supply Chain Management deals on the edge of IT and logistics with designing conceptual solution for BI in SCM. It covers specific needs of Supply-Chains, usage of BI in logistics, analyses the connection to the SCOR model developed by Supply-Chain Council, and designs & describes basic dimensions and relationships in the dimensional model. The primary goal is to create a general BI model solution that respects the specifics of various types of Supply-Chains in order to serve as a theoretical framework. The resulting model links to existing models designed for the Supply-Chain Management such as SCOR, Balanced Scorecard etc. To fulfil the primary goal first it is necessary to identify the specifics of various types of supply-chains, define BI use case and requirements in logistics; and by incorporating these parameters and SCOR model the BI model solution will emerge. The biggest contribution is the fulfilment of the primary goal - the creation of BI solution reference model for Supply-Chain with specific needs according to suppliers, manufacturers, distributors and retailers. With the help of this model it should be easier to coordinate, clarify goals, activities and relationships of methods used in the pre-analytical stage and implementation of the BI technologies in the Supply-Chains.

Abstract:
Although relational database systems have met many needs in traditional business applications, such technology is inadequate for non-traditional applications such as computer-aided design, computer-aided software engineering, and knowledge bases. Object-oriented database systems (OODB) enhance the data modeling power and performance of database management systems for these applications. Response time is an important issue facing OODB. However, standard measures of on-line transaction processing are irrelevant for OODB . Benchmarks compare alternative implementations of OODB system software, running a constant application workload. Few attempts have been made to characterize performance implications of OODB application design, given a fixed OODB and operating system platform. In this study, design features of the 007 Benchmark database application (Carey, DeWitt, and Naughton, 1993 ) were varied to explore the impact on response time to perform database operations Sensitivity to the degree of aggregation and to the degree of inheritance in the application were measured. Variability in response times also was measured, using a sequence of database operations to simulate a user transaction workload. Degree of aggregation was defined as the number of relationship objects processed during a database operation. Response time was linear with the degree of aggregation. The size of the database segment processed, compared to the size of available memory, affected the coefficients of the regression line. Degree of inheritance was defined as the Number of Children (Chidamber and Kemerer, 1994) in the application class definitions, and as the extent to which run-time polymorphism was implemented. In this study, increased inheritance caused a statistically significant increase in response time for the 007 Traversal 1 only, although this difference was not meaningful. In the simulated transaction workload of nine 007 operations, response times were highly variable. Response times per operation depended on the number of objects processed and the effect of preceding operations on memory contents. Operations that used disparate physical segments or had large working sets relative to the size of memory caused large increases in response time. Average response times and variability were reduced by removing these operations from the sequence (equivalent to scheduling these transactions at some time when the impact would be minimized).

Mallur, Kavya. "A Quality Assurance Framework for Business Process Management." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32273.

Full text
Abstract:
A business process is a defined collection of linked structured tasks, activities, and decisions performed together to produce a desired set of results in order to achieve business goals on behalf of the organization. Companies are increasingly moving their business processes online using Business Process Management (BPM) tools and technologies. With BPM, online business processes are defined by an explicit business process model that flexibly combines and orchestrates forms delivered through a web browser to integrate tasks performed by people, and web services accessible through Internet protocols to integrate tasks performed by software. Often the approach to quality assurance for online business processes is similar to what would be done with any other web application. This is insufficient since it only provides rudimentary verification of single user behavior whereas the orchestration of tasks across many users and software systems can be quite complex. As well, a simple web application testing approach does not leverage the defined model for a business process to ensure consistency, completeness and enable automation. Nor will such an approach validate that a business process is contributing towards the achievement of business goals. A more systematic approach is required. This thesis proposes a quality assurance framework to provide a repeatable, systematic, cost-efficient approach to quality assurance for BPM. A prototype framework was implemented and evaluated using two case studies, including one case study that was developed in collaboration with a local hospital to support a business process for cancer care assessment.

When involved in an environment that has different culture or value than yours, it is important to live and interact on a high level with the group of people or company that you are in project with because we believe that it will help you to understand and value the culture you are working with. Let it be known that it is important for the consultant or the programmer to be patient and open minded towards new learning experiences or else they will stumble on their own feet whether it is national culture or business culture.

We will do our study with the help of a qualitative research in a company with international experience located in Iran where we will make interviews over the phone with the help of semi-structured interview method. The conversations will then be recorded with a record player in order to gain high reliability. The difference between national and business culture as the way we understand it is that national culture consists of so many different aspects and is both inherited and learned. It also involves heroes, symbols, religious beliefs and rituals while business culture is less complex in the comparance. Although heroes and rituals exists in business culture as well, but the main difference is that you can change a business culture more easily than you can with a national culture. This conclusion is based on our empirical findings were we noticed that you can change the business culture through modernization, like our case study were they renewed their IS.

We come to the conclusion that it is essential for the company to have a developer who understand the companys’ needs and demands and develop business applications that can satisfy the companys’ wishes according to the existing and new norms. These norms are often set by IC: s. and developers in DC: s following them as best as they possibly can. Some of them are more successfull than others, and that is due to their cooperations with companies in IC: s. We must not forget that even though the majority of companies in Iran uses only native applications they still are mostly influenced from IC: s methodology.

As shown through our analysis and our conclusions the main reason for a business application to fail is cultural barriers where we have mentioned language, values, logics and business culture. Besides the national laws and business mentalities are also factors playing important rolls. All of these factors lead to the situation where it is insupportable to use a foreign business application. It is also very important that the consultant developing the business application has a solid understanding about the cultural differences, and a strong knowledge base about different kinds of business applications.

Al-Naeem, Tariq Abdullah Computer Science &amp Engineering Faculty of Engineering UNSW. "A quality-driven decision-support framework for architecting e-business applications." Awarded by:University of New South Wales. Computer Science and Engineering, 2006. http://handle.unsw.edu.au/1959.4/23419.

Full text
Abstract:
Architecting e-business applications is a complex design activity. This is mainly due to the numerous architectural decisions to be made, including the selection of alternative technologies, software components, design strategies, patterns, standards, protocols, platforms, etc. Further complexities arise due to the fact that these alternatives often vary considerably in their support for different quality attributes. Moreover, there are often different groups of stakeholders involved, with each having their own quality goals and criteria. Furthermore, different architectural decisions often include interdependent alternatives, where the selection of one alternative for one particular decision impacts the selections to be made for alternatives from other different decisions. There have been several research efforts aiming at providing sufficient mechanisms and tools for facilitating the architectural evaluation and design process. These approaches, however, address architectural decisions in isolation, where they focus on evaluating a limited set of alternatives belonging to one architectural decision. This has been the primary motivation behind the development of the Architectural DEcision-Making Support (ADEMS) framework, which basically aims at supporting stakeholders and architects during the architectural decision-making process by helping them determining a suitable combination of architectural alternatives. ADEMS framework is an iterative process that leverages rigorous quantitative decision-making techniques available in the literature of Management Science, particularly Multiple Attribute Decision-Making (MADM) methods and Integer Programming (IP). Furthermore, due to the number of architectural decisions involved as well as the variety of available alternatives, the architecture design space is expected to be huge. For this purpose, a query language has been developed, known as the Architecture Query Language (AQL), to aid architects in exploring and analyzing the design space in further depth, and also in examining different ???what-if??? architectural scenarios. In addition, in order to support leveraging ADEMS framework, a support tool has been implemented for carrying out the sophisticated set of mathematical computations and comparisons of the large number of architectural combinations, which might otherwise be hard to conduct using manual techniques. The primary contribution of the tool is in its help to identify, evaluate, and rank all potential combinations of alternatives based on their satisfaction to quality preferences provided by the different stakeholders. Finally, to assess the feasibility of ADEMS, three different case studies have been conducted relating to the architectural evaluation of different e-business and enterprise applications. Results obtained for the three case studies were quite positive as they showed an acceptable accuracy level for the decisions recommended by ADEMS, and at a reasonable time and effort costs for the different system stakeholders.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of this dissertation is to investigate the enabling role that agent based simulation plays in business and policy. The aforementioned issue has been addressed in this dissertation through three distinct, but related essays. The first essay is a literature review of different research applications of agent based simulation in various business disciplines, such as finance, economics, information systems, management, marketing and accounting. Various agent based simulation tools to develop computational models are discussed. The second essay uses an agent-based simulation approach to study important properties of the widely used most popular news recommender systems (NRS). This essay highlights the major limitations of most popular NRS in terms of: (i) susceptibility towards manipulation and (ii) unduly penalizing the article which may have "just" missed making the cutoff in most popular list. A probabilistic variant of recommendation has been introduced as an alternative to most popular list. Classical results from urn models are used to derive theoretical results for special cases, and to study specific properties of the probabilistic recommender. In addition to simulations, various statistical methodologies are used, such as regression based methodologies as part of a broader decision analysis tool. The third essay views firms as agents in building regression based empirical models to investigate the impact of outsourcing on firms. Using an economy wide panel data of outsourcing expenses of firms, the third essay first investigates the value addition by the IT backgrounds of project owners in managing IT related projects. Then it investigates the impact of peer-pressure on a firm's outsourcing behavior.

Abstract:
This dissertation develops a conceptual data model that can efficiently handle huge volumes of data containing uncertainty and are subject to frequent changes. This model can be used to build Decision Support Systems to improve decision-making process. Business intelligence and decision-making in today's business world require extensive use of huge volumes of data. Real world data contain uncertainty and change over time. Business leaders should have access to Decision Support Systems that can efficiently handle voluminous data, uncertainty, and modifications to uncertain data. Database product vendors provide several extensions and features to support these requirements; however, these extensions lack support of standard conceptual models. Standardization generally creates more competition and leads to lower prices and improved standards of living. Results from this study could become a data model standard in the area of applied decisions sciences. The conceptual data model developed in this dissertation uses a mathematical concept based on set theory, probability axioms, and the Bayesian framework. Conceptual data model, algebra to manipulate data, a framework and an algorithm to modify the data are presented. The data modification algorithm is analyzed for time and space efficiency. Formal mathematical proof is provided to support identified properties of model, algebra, and the modification framework. Decision-making ability of this model was investigated using sample data. Advantages of this model and improvements in inventory management through its application are described. Comparison and contrast between this model and Bayesian belief networks are presented. Finally, scope and topics for further research are described.

Abstract:
An understanding of opportunities and challenges in cloud computing is needed to better manage technology costs and create financial value. The purposes of this transcendental phenomenological study were to understand the lived experiences of minority business owners who operated business applications in the cloud and to explore how these experiences created financial value for businesses despite security challenges. Historically, minority business owners have experienced high rates of business failures and could benefit from information to help them manage business costs in order to position their businesses to grow and succeed. Modigliani-Miller's theorem on capital structure and Brealey and Young's concept of financial leverage were the conceptual frameworks that grounded this study. Data consisted of observational field notes and 15 individual semistructured interviews with open-ended questions. I used the in vivo and pattern coding approaches to analyze the data for emerging themes that addressed the research questions. The findings were that drivers of positive cloud-based experiences, such as easy access, ease of use, flexibility, and timesavings, created financial value for small business owners. In addition, the findings confirmed that opportunities in the cloud such as cost savings, efficiency, and ease of collaboration outweighed security challenges. Finally, the results indicated that cost-effective approaches such as the subscription model for acquiring technology created financial value for businesses. The findings of this study can be used by business owners, especially minority small business owners, to decide whether to move operations to the cloud to create financial value for their businesses.

Abstract:
Web applications provide the information technology (IT) implementation of business and align IT with business. Retirement of IT applications should ensure stability of business and IT alignment. The current study investigated the alignment gaps created between business and IT resulting from retiring IT software applications. The purpose of this study was to identify IT integration points with business and provide a process-based solution that sustained IT alignment with business after retiring IT applications. The theoretical framework strategic alignment model aided in identifying 3 IT domains as the IT integration points with business: enterprise architecture, configuration management database, and service-level agreement. The research methodology was grounded theory method. A process-in-operation facilitating application retirement generated the data. The grounded theory approach revealed the core category as IT and business alignment and established that the identified IT domains enabled IT alignment with business. The research findings revealed that structured decommissioning, timely repository updates, and 2-way communication between IT and business ensured continued accuracy and reliability of the repositories so business made valid interpretations. The findings may enable employees to realize their self-worth and dignity, leading to increased collaboration and coordination. The positive social change implications of these findings are in the increased alignment between IT and business, resulting in improved overall employee performance.

Full text
Abstract:
Data warehouses were envisioned to facilitate analytical reporting and data visualization by providing a model for the flow of data from operational databases to decision support environments. Decision support environments provide a multidimensional conceptual view of the underlying data warehouse, which is usually stored in relational DBMSs. Typically, there is an impedance mismatch between this conceptual view — shared also by all decision support applications accessing the data warehouse — and the physical model of the data stored in relational DBMSs. This thesis presents a mapping compilation algorithm in the context of the Conceptual Integration Model (CIM) [67] framework. In the CIM framework, the relationships between the conceptual model and the physical model are specified by a set of attribute-to-attribute correspondences. The algorithm compiles these correspondences into a set of mappings that associate each construct in the conceptual model with a query on the physical model. Moreover, the homogeneity and summarizability of data in conceptual models is the key to accurate query answering, a necessity in decision making environments. A data-driven approach to refactor relational models into summarizable schemas and instances is proposed as the solution of this issue. We outline the algorithms and challenges in bridging multidimensional conceptual models and the physical model of data warehouses and discuss experimental results.

Abstract:

Due to the pressure of hyper competitive markets, companies are forced to constantly search for improvements in their range of products and services. The success key is to be proactive and implement strategies that value innovation trough business processes and diversification of products and services. The ideal situation is when real

added values are offered to customers.

This Master Thesis, as a practice oriented project, analyzes the feasibility of a new business concept “Smart storage”, and aims to identify the existence of a real opportunity. It not only provides a practical solution to a case regarding innovation trough product diversification, but also shows the detailed processes that were used to solve it.

There were several phases in the project. The first phase included ideas generation(the discovery of different applications for the business idea); valuable information resulted

from brain storming sessions, focus groups and whishing and bug-lists of creative techniques. It was also necessary to run meetings with the consultant who is working close to the company that wants launch the new product and the Company itself. Once we come up with different applications, it was necessary to gather information about their attractiveness which constitutes the second phase of the study. In

this case we contacted several organizations and information resulted from interviews, internet search, telephone calls, e-mails and observation. The empirical data gathering phase was extremely important for the analysis of the project. Finally, for data analysis and its interpretation, we used the Feasibility analysis framework.

The conclusion points out that there is a great potential for starting a “Smart storage for Stadsarkivet-usage” project with public archive institutions. However further studies should be taken place in order to complete the feasibility analysis.

Hacklin, Fredrik August. "A 3G Convergence Strategy for Mobile Business Middleware Solutions : Applications and Implications." Thesis, KTH, Mikroelektronik och Informationsteknik, IMIT, 2001. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-93278.

Full text
Abstract:
Mobile business solutions are one of the most attractive market segments of mobile information services. The third generation of mobile communication systems (3G) will be a significant step forward in the convergence of telecommunications and datacommunications industries. More specifically, the convergence of mobile technologies and the Internet allows compelling possibilities for future applications and solutions. However, most current mobile businesses and mobile application and solution providers are rather contributing to the process of convergence; many current ideas and solutions are based on the restrictions of existing mobile networks combined with Internet-based services. In the future, when mobile networks and the Internet have merged, it will no longer be possible to create revenue with these types of solutions. One concrete solution is the mobile middleware concept, bridging the mobile technologies and Internet world. This Master’s thesis studies the middleware concept for providing business applications in the light of 3G, making strategic recommendations to a provider of these kinds of services. A comprehensive discussion about the developments after 3G is introduced. Alternative solutions are presented and some strategic implications are introduced. The implications are motivated by an industry survey, carried out within this project. The topic of over-the-air data synchronization is discussed as an example for interim middleware. Mobile computing file system issues are seen as an interesting opportunity for business applications. The possibility of remote desktop screen access is studied, and measurements proving its feasability for hosted wireless application service provision are made. Emerging mobile Java technologies are discussed as an efficient platform for providing ubiquitous, device independent end-to-end solutions. As one of the recommended strategies, this thesis introduces the concept of hybrid thickness client applications as a feasible solution for migrating from current middleware solutions to an (uncertain) future of native, thick terminal applications, within a scope of two years. Based on this concept, a prototype for a 3G smartphone application was developed as an example. A set of possible strategic scenarios is presented and discussed. This thesis also discusses operator differentiation and business solutions in an all-IP based world. 3G networks and handset devices will introduce a large number of new applications and business opportunities, but such a change will also introduce new challenges and risks. The migration challenge is being illustrated in the case of Smartner, a mobile middleware solution provider focusing on business applications. As shown by this case, compared to current enabling solutions, a major shift in technologies is seen as needed, in order to maintain long-term success.
Vaikutuksia perustellaan tuloksilla, joita tämän projektin osana tehty kysely paljasti. Tiedon langatonta synkronisointia tarkastellaan esimerkkinä tilapäisestä middlewaresta. Mobiileihin tiedostojärjestelmiin liittyvät asiat nähdään mielenkiintoisena mahdollisuutena yrityssovelluksille. Toimistojärjestelmien etäkäyttömahdollisuuksia on tutkittu ja niiden sopivuutta langattomaan sovellustarjontaan on mitattu. Kehittyviä mobiileja Java-teknologioita pidetään tehokkaana alustana, jonka avulla voidaan tarjota kaikkialla saatavilla olevia, päätelaiteriippumattomia ratkaisuja loppuasiakkaille. Yhtenä suositelluista strategioista tämä diplomityö esittelee yksinkertaisen päätelaitesovellusmallin, jonka avulla nykyisistä middleware-ratkaisuista voidaan siirtyä tulevaisuuden kehittyneempiin päätelaiteratkaisuihin kahden vuoden sisällä. Tähän konseptiin perustuen työssä on kehitetty esimerkki 3G-älypuhelimen sovelluksesta. Tutkimus tuo esille, miten Smartnerin nykyiset sovellukset huomioon ottaen tarvitaan valtava teknologinen suunnanmuutos pitkäaikaisen perspektiivin säilyttämiseksi.

Abstract:
The area of research regarding how to translate Natural Language Questions into SQL-queries has evolved in the last years with developments in Machine Learning algorithms as well as with the emergence of new datasets. This report aims to give insights into the complexities of the task and attempts to evaluate the possible areas of use in a practical context of modern-day corporations. The implementation suggested in this report gave inferior results to the state-of-the-art but illuminated several aspects that, together with a qualitative study, showed that the implementation and usefulness in a practical context are not obvious and require further research.

With vast improvements in computational power, increased accessibility to big data, and rapid innovations in computing algorithms, the use of neural networks for both engineering and business purposes was met with a renewed interest beginning in early 2000s. Amidst substantial development, the Softplus and Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) activation functions were introduced in 2000 and 2001 respectively, with the latter emerging as the more popular choice of activation function in neural networks. Notably, the ReLU activation function maintains a high degree of gradient propagation while presenting greater model sparsity and computational efficiency over Softplus. As an alternative to the ReLU, a family of a modified Softplus activation function - the "Smoothing" activation function of the form g(z) = [mu] log(1 + e[superscript z/[mu]) has been proposed. Theoretically, the Smoothing activation function will leverage the high degree of gradient propagation and model simplicity characteristic of the ReLU function, while eliminating possible issues associated with the non-differentiability of ReLU about the origin. In this research, the performance of the Smoothing family of activation functions vis-à-vis the ReLU activation function will be examined.

Fulford, Richard. "Towards a theory of management and evaluation of operational enterprise resource planning applications." Thesis, Edith Cowan University, Research Online, Perth, Western Australia, 2008. https://ro.ecu.edu.au/theses/171.

Full text
Abstract:
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) applications are the most ubiquitous of business information systems. They impact almost all business functions, bringing control and providing information. Some of these applications have already been operational for 20 years and this longevity has changed the way in which management of information systems is envisaged. Traditionally, information systems had a lifespan of perhaps five to 10 years and their iterative replacements, allowed them to be aligned with a changing business landscape. In contrast, enduring ERP applications, if not altered and changed to meet contemporary business requirements, may stifle and restrict organisations. To be effective they, therefore, require ongoing management and evaluation throughout their operational life. Research concerning the management and evaluation of operational ERP applications is seen in the information systems literature to be sparse, with many specific calls for studies into the phenomenon. Organisations also seem uncertain of the best approach to ensure their applications meet business objectives. This has prompted the research aim of developing a theoretical framework that details the key factors relevant to ongoing management and evaluation of ERP; the framework being designed to assist practitioners in the effective administration of ERP and to provide guidance for further academic research. To address the research aim, a qualitative study was undertaken to explore the management and evaluation of ERP in organisations. A broad literature review of the impacting factors identified the preliminary constructs for the study. An initial pilot case was used to test and support the validity of these constructs with further constructs being identified. The constructs were tested and the framework refined in four additional case studies. The organisations ranged in size from large medium to global corporations. The ERP applications studied consist of Oracle e-business suite, SAP ERP, and Microsoft Dynamics AX. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with senior management, finance and IT personnel as well as users of the application. Descriptive case analysis was used to portray the phenomenon in each of the organisations. This was followed by explanative cross case analysis that compared and examined the findings for each of the constructs. One of the key findings of the research is that the decisions that are made early in the application 's lifecycle may well impact the application, and its resultant business benefits, for the life of the application. These decisions are often made by organisational stakeholders who have inadequate knowledge of the application and who are insufficiently supported by consultants concerning macro business matters. The antecedents of poor decisions are very difficult, in terms of time, complexity and cost, to recover from and they can ultimately result in ERP abandonment. Organisations that go on to implement a subsequent ERP use the knowledge gained from the original implementation to take a more considered approach that results in much improved business outcomes. The research has found that with respect to the original implementation poor judgement by stakeholders is related to (1) a lack of understanding of the capabilities and encumberments of ERP applications (2) the misnomer of ‘best practice’ that is applied to these applications (3) poor training, in terms of both content and timing, by value added resellers and software authors (4) consultancy that is application module specific (5) a lack of knowledge of organizational business processes (6) a lack of understanding of the holistic information needs of the organisation (7) poor understanding of the long term risks associated with decisions. The major recommendation of this study is that an organisation takes ownership of the application as early as possible by establishing an ERP bureau that has the ongoing involvement of senior management. The personnel comprising the ERP bureau should have business, process and technology skills and should fundamentally understand the business drivers as well as the capabilities of the application. The major contribution of this thesis is a framework that specifies a number of factors that the bureau needs to understand to properly manage an ERP application. These include (1) an understanding of the strategic aim of the application (2) an appreciation of the impacts of business factors such as organisation type, strategy process, financial procedures, and financial status (3) an understanding of contextual environmental considerations such as supply chain influencers (4) an understanding of the consequences of the software authors' charging procedures (5) the value and potential of the ERP maintenance agreement (6) an understanding of the impact of customisations on the ability to upgrade (7) knowledge of horizontal and vertical information requirements (8) a recognition that due to the strategic nature of ERP, business drivers and imperatives tend to provide more crucial benefits indicators than traditional cost/benefit justifications. This thesis has both theoretical and practical significance. The theoretical significance of the research is the unearthing of the key factors that enable and impede the management of operational ERP applications. This unearthing has the potential to help focus future research and to act as a precursor for similar studies. Education programs concerning ERP management may also benefit from considering the various important factors identified. The research is particularly practically relevant as the framework has the potential to shape both organizational policy and practice

Abstract:
Wireless sensor networks have been identified as one of the key technologies for the 21st century. They consist of tiny devices with limited processing and power capabilities, called motes that can be deployed in large numbers of useful sensing capabilities. Even though, they are flexible and easy to deploy, there are a number of considerations when it comes to their fault tolerance, conserving energy and re-programmability that need to be addressed before we draw any substantial conclusions about the effectiveness of this technology. In order to overcome their limitations, we propose a middleware solution. The proposed scheme is composed based on two main methods. The first method involves the creation of a flexible communication protocol based on technologies such as Mobile Code/Agents and Linda-like tuple spaces. In this way, every node of the wireless sensor network will produce and process data based on what is the best for it but also for the group that it belongs too. The second method incorporates the above protocol in a middleware that will aim to bridge the gap between the application layer and low level constructs such as the physical layer of the wireless sensor network. A fault tolerant platform for deploying and monitoring applications in real time offers a number of possibilities for the end user giving him in parallel the freedom to experiment with various parameters, in an effort towards the deployed applications running in an energy efficient manner inside the network. The proposed scheme is evaluated through a number of trials aiming to test its merits under real time conditions and to identify its effectiveness against other similar approaches. Finally, parameters which determine the characteristics of the proposed scheme are also examined.

Abstract:
The thesis presents a Business Intelligence solution in higher education area. The solution is comprised of the design and implementation of representative tasks, metrics, dimensions and analytical applications with the use of MBI methods. The sub-goal is to summarize knowledge gained by the BI project implemented in higher education area by IBM Corporation. A Hands-on knowledge was used to achieve the set targets. This knowledge confirms the fact that designed tasks, metrics and dimensions are indeed applicable in practice. The main contribution of the thesis consists in enriching the MBI methodology with a solution applicable in high education sector. The interim contribution lies in documentation of specifics connected with implementation of the BI project within Internatinal Business Machines Corporation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Researchers in software engineering proposed design method for distributed applications to construct a set of communicating system components from a global behavior. The joint behaviors of these components must precisely satisfy the specified global behavior. The next concern is to transform the constructed models of these components into executable business processes by ensuring the exchange of asynchronous messages among the generated business processes. The introduction of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) has helped to achieve this goal. SOA provides high flexibility in composing loosely-integrated services that can be used among business domains to carry out business transactions; this composition is known as service orchestration. Moreover, SOA supports Model Driven Architecture (MDA) such that services modeled as UML Activity Diagrams (AD) can be transformed into a set of Business Execution Language (BPEL) processes. Many researchers discussed the transformation of UML AD and the Business Process Modeling Notation (BPMN) into BPEL. However, they did not discuss the practical limitations that some of these transformations impose. This thesis addresses the imitations of the transformation from UML AD to BPEL processes using the IBM Rational Software Architect (RSA). We showed here that the tool is unable to create the correct BPEL artifacts from UML AD components in certain cases, for instance when the behavior includes the alternative for receiving single or concurrent messages, a weak loop, or certain choice activities. Furthermore, we provided novel solutions to the transformations in these cases in order to facilitate the transformation from UML AD to BPEL.
