Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited
Navy Supply Systems Command (NAVSUP) lacks a business process framework for the development of Business Continuity Management (BCM) plans. In the event business processes are deprived of automation for a prolonged period of time, the NAVSUP enterprise requires alternative methods to maintain the delivery of these products and services produced by these processes with minimum customer disruptions and financial losses. The purpose of this study was to review existing methodology to assess mission criticality of NAVSUP products and services and associated business processes. The analysis will lead to the development of a BCM plan and the associated information flow applied against a single Navy supply chain segment, Re-Engineered Maritime Allowance Development (ReMAD). This analysis will include recovery time and recovery point objectives. ReMAD and ERP interfaces as well as the ReMAD contingency plan will provide a context to lean on for the development of a business process framework for the plan. Currently, the ReMAD contingency plan’s system recovery timelines and recovery point objectives are not sufficient to continue with the processing of Maritime allowances.

This study investigated the different business continuity risks organisations face and the existence of business continuity plans to address and manage these risks. The study found that although the majority of organisations are aware of the business continuity risks that they are faced with, not all fully understand the impact thereof on their organisations, and accordingly do not have effective and adequate business continuity plans in place to address and manage these risks. Also, not all organisations are placing enough emphasis on the establishment of a business continuity culture within their organisations to support their business continuity philosophy and plan.

This thesis investigated both the potential for Business Continuity Management to enhance organisational reliability, and appropriate levels of Business Continuity Management capability resident in a number of Australian international and regional airports. Findings indicated that a host of regulatory and business processes including Business Continuity Management can assist in creating reliability in aviation infrastructure systems in Australia. Further, the thesis developed a multi-level maturity assessment framework for defining the depth of implementation of Business Continuity Management capabilities in airports, along with other recommendations to improve functional reliability of airport operations.

Abstract:
The Information Technology (IT) industry has grown and has become an integral part in the world of business today. The importance of information, and IT in particular, will in fact only increase with time (von Solms, 1999). For a large group of organizations computer systems form the basis of their day-to-day functioning (Halliday, Badendorst & von Solms, 1996). These systems evolve at an incredible pace and this brings about a greater need for securing them, as well as the organizational information processed, transmitted and stored. This technological evolution brings about new risks for an organization’s systems and information (Halliday et. al., 1996). If IT fails, it means that the business could fail as well, creating a need for more rigorous IT management (International Business Machines Corporation, 2000). For this reason, executive management must be made aware of the potential consequences that a disaster could have on the organisation (Hawkins,Yen & Chou, 2000). A disaster could be any event that would cause a disruption in the normal day-to-day functioning of an organization. Such an event could range from a natural disaster, like a fire, an earthquake or a flood, to something more trivial, like a virus or system malfunction (Hawkins et. al., 2000). During the 1980’s a discipline known as Disaster Recovery Planning (DRP) emerged to protect an organization’s data centre, which was central to the organisation’s IT based structure, from the effects of disasters. This solution, however, focussed only on the protection of the data centre. During the early 1990’s the focus shifted towards distributed computing and client/server technology. Data centre protection and recovery were no longer enough to ensure survival. Organizations needed to ensure the continuation of their mission critical processes to support their continued goal of operations (IBM Global Services, 1999). Organizations now had to ensure that their mission critical functions could continue while the data centre was recovering from a disaster. A different approach was required. It is for this reason that Business Continuity Planning (BCP) was accepted as a formal discipline (IBM Global Services, 1999). To ensure that business continues as usual, an organization must have a plan in place that will help them ensure both the continuation and recovery of critical business processes and the recovery of the data centre, should a disaster strike (Moore, 1995). Wilson (2000) defines a business continuity plan as “a set of procedures developed for the entire enterprise, outlining the actions to be taken by the IT organization, executive staff, and the various business units in order to quickly resume operations in the event of a service interruption or an outage”. With markets being highly competitive as they are, an organization needs a detailed listing of steps to follow to ensure minimal loss due to downtime. This is very important for maintaining its competitive advantage and public stature (Wilson, 2000). The fact that the company’s reputation is at stake requires executive management to take continuity planning very serious (IBM Global Services, 1999). Ensuring continuity of business processes and recovering the IT services of an organization is not the sole responsibility of the IT department. Therefore management should be aware that they could be held liable for any consequences resulting from a disaster (Kearvell-White, 1996). Having a business continuity plan in place is important to the entire organization, as everyone, from executive management to the employees, stands to benefit from it (IBM Global Services, 1999). Despite this, numerous organizations do not have a business continuity plan in place. Organizations neglecting to develop a plan put themselves at tremendous risk and stand to loose everything (Kearvell-White, 1996).

Abstract:
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has evolved into a pervasive commodity in modern enterprises. ICT enables enterprises, regardless of sector, to achieve their strategic objectives. Similarly, ICT is regarded as a critical enabler in South African municipalities to reach their objectives and ultimately deliver sustainable services to their communities. This dependence on ICT, therefore, necessitates a resilient ICT environment where minimal disruption to ICT is a primary goal. Unfortunately, as reported by the Auditor-General of South Africa, the majority of South African municipalities are neglecting to address the continuity of their ICT services. Failing to implement adequate ICT continuity controls restrict these municipalities from achieving their strategic goals and, as a result, fulfilling their constitutional mandate of service delivery. It is, therefore, the objective of this study to devise a method, consisting of a theoretical foundation and a supporting tool-set, to assist municipalities in addressing a real-world ICT continuity problem. This method aims to be scalable and usable within different municipalities, and be simplistic and comprehensible enough to implement. The theoretical foundation will introduce the concept of ICT Readiness for Business Continuity, based on the recommendations of international best practices and standards, for example, the ISO 27031 (2011) standard. Furthermore, by considering various challenges within local government, the tool-set will ultimately help municipalities to help themselves in this regard.

Abstract:

Many businesses are not adequately prepared for hazards and/or incidents that potentially imperil their operations. The question is why and whether independent variables associated with businesses and/or business principals are correlated to pre-incident planning; specifically, business continuity (BC) planning. Business principals from the Sacramento, California region participated in quantitative research to answer these questions through an online survey comprised of multiple choice, categorical, and Likert scale question types.

Findings from this research indicate 26% of businesses have business continuity plans (BCPs); employee safety was cited as the dominant motivating factor. Indicatively, an awareness gap was the dominant barrier for businesses without BCPs. Business size was found to be significantly (.015%) correlated to pre-incident planning; however, other demographic variables tested were inconclusive. Community resilience, intrinsically connected to economic vitality, is enhanced by safeguarding businesses from disruption and/or post-incident dissolution. Increasing BC planning benefits businesses and the communities where they operate.

The research objective was to provide a directional sense of some key considerations for business continuity planning (BCP) specific to a company's downstream distribution operations in the U.S. This was achieved via a two-pronged strategy comprised of quantitative and qualitative elements to complement insights gained from the literature review. By quantitatively assessing the financial impacts arising from four hypothetical scenarios, the business impact analysis (BIA) showcased the merits of short time-to-recovery (TTR) in the event of a disruption. However, available information also appears to suggest that the estimated financial impact from carrying high-value inventory is not necessarily insignificant. Hence, a company may want to mitigate the likelihood of a scenario whereby large amounts of inventory become damaged. Qualitative information from industry participants in the study highlighted the importance of tailoring continuity plans to the unique supply chain needs of an organization.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Business continuity planning can be defined as the process of developing advance arrangements and procedures that enable an organisation to respond to an event in such a manner that critical business functions will continue with the least interruption or essential change. This study project guides one through an investigation of a business continuity planning project in Media24, a large multi-national corporate based in South Africa. As with most South African companies, Media24 has not done sufficient planning in this regard till now. This study project will describe the methodology followed during this project as well as extracts from interviews conducted with numerous individuals at various management levels in this company. This study project can assist any medium to large South African enterprise who is considering a business continuity planning project. It endeavours to motivate and convince the reader of the unquestionable grounds for business continuity planning in any organisation.
Abstract:
Businesses depend on Information Technology (IT) more than ever. Disruptions in a IT infrastructure causes disruptions in business processes which lead to financial losses, legal consequences, losses in reputation and may cause bankruptcies. Business Continuity Management (BCM) addresses these problems by conducting a Business Impact Analysis (BIA) and providing a Business Continuity Plan against various expected threats and disruptions. For Business Continuity Management an integrated and coherent view of all involved business processes, IT and facility level resources services is essential. Creating such a view using ' conventional methodologies is, however, time consuming and error prone. Dealing with large, heterogenous, and complex IT infrastructures further demand automated process impact analyses, Service Level Agreement (SLA) translations and recovery plan validations. The major contributions of this research are: * A non-intrusive approach to extend business process modelling environments with BCM analysis and a model-driven methodology to create a coherent view on all important IT and facility level elements, * A novel methodology for automated Business Impact Analyses * A first ever Petri-Net based solution which permits to translate Business Process Continuity Requirements into SLAs and prop- agate these SLAs across an IT landscape.

Abstract:
IT solutions must be protected so that the business can continue, even in the case of fatal failures associated with disasters. Business continuity in the context of disaster implies that business cannot continue in the current environment but instead must continue at an alternate site or data center. However, the BC/DR concept today is too fragmented, as many different frameworks and methodologies exist. Furthermore, many of the application-specific solutions are provided and promoted by software vendors, while hardware vendors provide solutions for their hardware environments. Nevertheless, there are concerns that BC/DR solutions often do not connect to the technical components that are in the lower layers, which function as the foundationfor any such solutions; hence, it is equally important to connect and map the requirements accordingly. Moreover, a shift in the hardware environment, such as cloud computing, as well as changes in operations management, such as outsourcing, add complexity that must be captured by a BC/DR solution. Furthermore, the integrated nature of IT-based business solutions also presents new challenges, as it isno longer one IT solution that must be protected but also other IT solutions that are integrated to deliver an individual business process. Thus, it will be difficult to employa current BC/DR approach. Hence, the purpose of this thesis project is to design, develop, and present a novel way of addressing the BC/DR gaps, while supporting the requirements of a dynamic IT environment. The solution reuses most elements fromthe existing standards and solutions. However, it also includes new elements to capture and present the technical solution; hence, the complete solution is designatedas a framework. The new framework can support many IT solutions since it will havea modular approach, and it is flexible, scalable, and platform and application independent, while addressing the solution on a component level. The new framework is applied to two application scenarios at the stakeholder site, and theresults are studied and presented in this thesis.

Abstract:
Business Continuity Management (BCM) is a process that focuses on counteracting organizational risk, disasters and crises. Placing Business Continuity Management in the context of Strategic Planning (SP) will help organizations to cope with a wide range of unexpected incidents before, during and after their occurrence. Subsequently, this will help to ensure the long-term survival of an organization. The aim of this research is to develop an understanding of the significance of placing BCM in the context of SP. This requires studying BCM, its significance, role and practice; Strategic Planning, its significance, purpose and potential vulnerability; the rationale for placing BCM in the context of SP; the factors that are likely to influence placing BCM in the context of SP including driving factors and obstacles; and managers’ views of BCM and the placing of BCM in the context of SP. This research was undertaken in the Jordanian context. Data was collected via interviewer-administered questionnaires which were conducted with general managers and other key managers from Jordanian organizations from the banking, insurance, industrial and services sectors. 110 questionnaires were collected. The questionnaires were followed by 10 semi-structured interviews in order to support the quantitative findings obtained by the questionnaires. The research findings revealed that 80.9% of the surveyed organizations in Jordan used BCM. Those organizations that used BCM differed to some extent in their practice of BCM. 51.8% of the surveyed organizations had BCM placed in the context of SP. SP was important for achieving organizational purposes including those related to BCM. The approach to BCM, which is adopted in Jordanian organizations, helped to place BCM in the context of SP. There were a number of factors that discouraged some Jordanian organizations from placing BCM in the context of SP. However, there were also a number of factors that encouraged some other Jordanian organizations to place BCM in the context of SP. Managers had positive views regarding BCM. They either agreed or strongly agreed that BCM can be integrated with SP; BCM would help their organizations to cope with various types of disasters and crises if it is integrated with SP; BCM was an integral part of their organizations’ approach to risk; and BCM was not an extra burden to their businesses.

Abstract:
Business continuity plans (BCP) help organizations plan for and withstand the occurrence of unexpected events that interrupt the normal operation of business. Managers typically develop several alternate plans to minimize the business impact of unexpected events. The problem for decision makers is that comparative evaluation of BCP is typically done using subjective judgments. This research uses a case study approach focusing on a single organization and a single business continuity application to propose the use of computer simulation as a tool for managers to identify and evaluate different BCP prior to committing resources. In the context of an insurance firm, a specific plan was evaluated using simulation methods. A simulation model was used to model the operational aspects of the call center in an insurance company. After the model was validated, it was used to answer questions about what-if scenarios. Results suggest that scenario analysis using simulated model enables managers to ask useful questions that can help evaluate the plan. Managers at the insurance company used the simulation model to determine the level of service required and evaluate business continuity strategies to achieve it.

Abstract:
Enterprises with a global supply network are at risk of lost revenue as a result of disruptive disasters at supplier locations. Various strategies exist for addressing this risk, and a variety of types of research has been done regarding the identification, assessment and response to the risk of disruption in a supply chain network. This thesis establishes a decision model to support Business Continuity Planning at the first-tier supplier level. The decision model incorporates discrete-event simulation of supply chain networks (through Simio software), Monte Carlo simulation, and risk index optimization. After modeling disruption vulnerability in a supply chain network, costs of implementing all combinations of Business Continuity Plans are ranked and then tested in discrete-event simulation for further insight into inventory levels, unmet customer demand, production loss and related costs. A case study demonstrates the implementation of the decision support process and tests a historical set of data from a large manufacturing company. Discrete-event simulation modeling of loss is confirmed to be accurate. The relevance of the model concept is upheld and recommendations for future work are made.

Lutz, Gillian. "Factors influencing business continuity readiness of the Western Cape government." Thesis, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/20.500.11838/3013.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Business Administration))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2020
The research was focused on business continuity management as a key discipline towards building a resilient Western Cape Government. It provided an opportunity to identify existing business continuity processes to determine the level of preparedness of the Western Cape Government to ensure continued business due to a disruption. The inability of the public sector to manage and facilitate sound business continuity processes in anticipation of disruptive events have placed it in a position where it would be unable to deliver services to citizens and stakeholders. As the current business environment was continuously evolving, Government as an organization was therefore not immune to change and disruption, whether generated internally or externally. For government to be resilient it required the holistic management of risk but also the ability to adapt and respond to change with a limited impact on the delivery of services. Business Continuity was the core to building and improving organizational resilience. It had been a proven methodology that organizations should embrace as part of a holistic approach to the management of risks and threats. Legislation and/or policies have been drafted for the public sector to guide with the management of risks. As an organ of state and part of the public sector the Western Cape Government was therefore obliged to manage risks in a way that ensured that government was able to continue to render a service both internally and externally with as little impact as possible. Business continuity management identified the priorities of an organization as well as prepared solutions to address disruptive threats. The aim of the study was the exploration of the state of business continuity within the Western Cape Government. The objectives of the study were to: Identify current business continuity processes; Evaluate current business continuity processes; Critically analyse existing business continuity documentation; and Identify the links between business continuity and resilience. The research questions were focused on getting departments to express how business continuity was facilitated; clarity in respect of processes; input source of business continuity documentation; as well as determining whether departments acknowledged the benefits of having business continuity management towards building a resilient Western Cape Government. Previous work reinforced the importance of having sound business continuity processes in place. From the literature it would appear that business continuity in the public sector was fairly new and developmental in nature. Previous work also recognized that each and every organization was unique and as such the process should be aligned with the core functions and/or mandates afforded by legislation and/or policies. The research approach deemed most appropriate for this particular study was the Interpretivist approach. Not only was this approach value laden but it allowed for the exploration of the theory and obtaining of rich in-depth data from the participants. It also allowed for the contextualization of the problem as it related to the business continuity processes within the Western Cape Government. The research method was qualitative using interviews and document analysis as the most suited research instruments to elicit qualitative data required to render the research process as valid. It was concluded that having sound business continuity processes in place would greatly support organizations with the management of disruptions. Business continuity should be a proactive plan to avoid and mitigate risk associated with disruption of operations and needed to be managed in a way that objectives were met. Further to this it should be noted that the resilience maturity of the Western Cape Government remained reactive and concerted efforts towards becoming proactive should be considered.

Abstract:
Background: Due to the fact that external risks are inevitable for companies, a readiness is required to mitigate its effects. Nevertheless, if a risk is realized, it leads to a crisis which must be answered by the organization. This means companies must develop control tools to handle the effect. One way is with the help of risk and crisis management, also, Business Continuity Management. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to gain a deeper understanding of how IKEA as an organization works with risk and crisis management based on the phases before, during and after the crisis and how the organization has acted and adapted during the pandemic specifically in the Swedish market. The study also intends to analyze whether IKEA's approach mimics BCM strategies by comparing theory with practice. Method: By using a qualitative research method, the collection of material for the empirical data has been made possible via semi-structured interviews. An abductive research approach has been used as well as a case study as research design which made it possible to gain a deeper understanding of IKEA's risk and crisis management. Conclusion: The study shows that IKEA has a well-developed risk and crisis management within the organization based on the crisis three phases. Furthermore, it can be stated that IKEA has not applied BCM uniformly within the organization. On the other hand, conclusions are drawn the organization has during the pandemic applied strategies which are in line with BCM. Furthermore, conclusions can be drawn about which measures to adapt the department stores to operational disruptions, where social distancing and increased e-commerce have been significant measures.

This thesis examines what a Business Continuity Plan (BCP) should comprise off, as well as the difference between a BCP and a Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) and the key elements of an effective BCP as well as the different types of disasters. It also investigates why companies that have BCP in place and conducts testing of their plan on a regular basis, either quarterly or bi-annually, still experience prolonged downtime during a disaster resulting in Service Level Agreements (SLA) not being met or major financial loses. It also inspects acceptable processes within a BCP to determine whether there are ways of improving these processes to prevent companies from experiencing prolonged downtime. The objective of this research is to determine and understand: • Why organisations within the Western Cape experience prolonged downtimes during a disaster event • The potential deficiencies in a BCP and how they can be amended.

Abstract:

Business continuity planning (BCP) aims at minimizing the effects of assumed future disruptions, by means of a proactive planning. Performing BCP takes participation from organization and therefore this study investigates how to develop a functional implementation of BCP. Studies on the subject of risk perception show that all risk also holds opportunities and that risk-taking is at the heart of all business activities. Elimination of all risk is therefore not desirable. Risk management should rather be about balancing optimization and flexibility and aim for persistence in relations, i.e. resilience. However, BCP generally adopts a biased perception, focusing only on the threats of future loss. A case study at a Volvo CE plant shows how this gives considerable marketing problems for the BCP practice. Two paths for implementation occur:

• Consolidation path – strengthen the understanding for current practice.

• Reconsideration path – create of a more direct gain from the planning.

Common for both paths is the key elements of a implementation plan, which are marketing strategy, process description and work organization. Irrespective of what path one chooses, these three constituents remain at focus for successful implementation. However, it is the opinion of the author that the reconsideration path holds the best promises to reach a functional implementation since it acknowledges the dualism of risk and thereby also acknowledges the necessary trade-off between optimization and flexibility. Such a BCP practice thereby establishes a systematic for process administration that ensures both well-administrated processes and business wellness – this should establish resilience.

In today's business Information technology (IT) and Information plays a key role. Due todevelopment and influence of Information Technology, using systems, IT services andnetworks cannot be avoided in the business and they all need to be protected and secured. In order to ensure such a higher sort of security and protection, the Information securitysystem (ISS) have been used. Still the businesses today are enveloped with higher risks andupshots which are also being narrower and keeping changed consistently. At suchcircumstance the solution providing method should be very unique and narrower to each andevery slot of business, for a competitive and higher security. Thus such compact solutionsbeen given by Business Continuity Planning (BCP) method. The objective of this research is to determine and understand: Why organisations within the Western Cape experience prolonged downtimes during a disaster event. The potential deficiencies in a BCP and how they can be amended. A case study of four companies based in the Western Cape was conducted. These companies were chosen because each of them has a BCP in place and each have experienced prolonged downtime during a disaster. Qualitative interviews with the aid of an open-ended questionnaire were used to interview the BCP or Risk Manager of each company. The data was analysed to determine what the causes of their prolonged downtime were during a disaster. In the analysis and findings process each company is presented as a separate case study. The intension with this research study is to add an additional concept to the Common BCP Process that was identified within this study and that formed the basis for the Conceptual Framework, thereby reducing the downtime during a disaster for the companies that formed part of the research.

Abstract:
Successful organisations have a well-defined mission and a strategy for accomplishing that mission. The organisation strategy involves the building of a competitive advantage in a defined market. Activities are oriented around this business strategy. When utilised effectively, technology is a powerful instrument for enhancing the organisation’s competitiveness. Technology management is the application of managerial techniques most suitable for ensuring that the technological factor is exploited for achievement of an organisation's goals. It is critical to correctly implement appropriate practices related to technology and innovation management at organisational level. Most organisations are technology intensive and deliver products or services. The research investigates, through the use of technology auditing, the present and future technology needs of the organisation. It also tried to establish the impact of technology auditing on the competitive advantage of the organisation. The research attempts to set a strategic context for the array of tools, technologies and standards emerging to support the organisation. The research analysed the potential of technology auditing to facilitate a dynamic scale of economy where the organisations take on the tasks of managing its technology. Basic theoretical principles of a technological audit were applied when the researcher conducted the technology audit. Because there is no organisation that is an exact replica of another, a technology audit must be custom made for the specific organisation where it is conducted. A micro business, MP Engineering, in the Port Elizabeth Metropole was chosen to conduct the technology audit at for the purpose of this research project. The research results confirmed the literature currently available.

Abstract:
Everyday, systems around the world are invaded by hackers, people fall victim to virus attacks, sensitive data are stolen, and firms find their operations screech to a halt. Information Security is responsible for the protection of the information resources of companies and people. The business continuity plan (BCP), one of the many issues that fall under the label of Information Security, is the object of this study. Previously confined to esoteric research journals, BCP gained significant coverage in the mainstream media in the wake of the attacks on the World Trade Center. The primary goal of a business continuity plan is the avoidance, or substantial reduction, of losses that a firm might suffer as a result of security incidents. Put simply, a BCP's goal is to keep firms operating as normal as possible during a disaster and get the firm back to standard operations as quickly as possible. The purpose of this study is to illustrate the current utilization of business continuity plans in Brazilian businesses and suggest how to make them less vulnerable to internal and external threats, regardless of whether they are old, new, or as yet undiscovered. To achieve this objective, 112 companies were selected and the executives could express their perceptions filling the surveys and through interviews. The research demonstrates that firms are not prepared to face incidents which may cause interruptions of their activities. Finally, the research recommends that companies to evaluate carefully the risks involved in their businesses and what consequences the security incidents may cause. The impacts can certainly justify the investments in Business Continuity Plan.

The overall objective of this research is to develop a business continuity plan for a relatively large livestock company located in Francophone West Africa. This is very important in an environment when both internal and external risks can lead to significant disruptions in the business processes. The research, thus, focuses on developing a process that can be applied to establish a business continuity management process in this firm and provides the framework for implementing such a plan successfully. The livestock company, let us call it Livestock Co. to protect its identity, wants to define strategies for recovery, resumption of business and other key activities under the potential scenarios. Its managers desire to formulate crisis response strategies that would be implemented quickly when these disasters hit. The thesis envisages the potential conditions that may trigger these crises and develops the management systems to mitigate them, returning the business to it activities as quickly as possible. Some of the natural disasters that may be considered are fire, accidents and political upheavals. Some technical disasters that may be imagined may be related to infrastructure, labor crisis, and grain dust explosions. Unlike natural disasters, which often are uncertain, technical disasters can be predicted based on careful assessment of the environment or the assets. The research evaluates the process for developing a business continuity management plan and offers an implementation process to ensure its smooth execution.

Abstract:
Background: As crisis occur more and more frequently around the world, it is vital for organizations to have an implemented strategy to cope with these disruptions. One way to manage these crises is Business Continuity Management which involves the entire process of planning actions in advance, crisis management and post-crisis evaluation. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to identify and analyse the theories related to Business Continuity Management and whether these theories practically applies in Swedish manufacturing companies. Furthermore, the study aims to create a deeper understanding of how the studied companies, by means of comparisons and review, act in a crisis situation. Method: The thesis is based on a qualitative research method where the empirical material collection has been done via semi-structured interviews. Further empirical material is the annual and quarterly reports of the companies studied. A comparative research design has been applied, which allows for comparisons between the studied companies' use of BCM. Conclusion: The study finds that none of the studied companies fully applies Business Continuity Management. However, models and strategies that are in line with the theoretical frame of reference for BCM are used.

Business continuity management is a comprehensive framework to prevent the disruptive events from impacting the business operations, quickly recovering business and reducing the corresponding potential damages for energy system, such as nuclear power plants (NPPs). This dissertation provides discussions on the following aspects: developing appropriate risk assessment methods in order to integrate condition monitoring data and inspection data for a robust and real-time risk profile updating and prognostics. To account for the uncertainty of condition monitoring data, a hidden Markov gaussian mixture model is developed to model the condition monitoring data. A Bayesian network is applied to integrate the two data sources. For improving applicability of business continuity in practice, time-variant variables regard business continuity index, e.g. component degradation, time-dependent revenue, etc are taken into consideration in the business continuity modelling process. Based on the proposed business continuity index, a joint optimization method considering all the safety measures in event evolvement process including prevention stage, mitigation stage, emergency stage and recovery stage is developed to enhance system business continuity under limited resources. The proposed methodologies are applied to NPP against disruptive event

Abstract:
Future self-continuity has been noted as a major factor that determines unethical business decisions, but its mediating effect on the difference in individuals from cross-cultural settings is yet to be adequately examined. This study investigated unethical business decisions of Eastern and Western Nigerians; and the mediating role of future self-continuity. A total of 197 post graduate university students selected through convenience sampling were used for the cross-sectional study. Participants filled a self-administered close ended questionnaire measuring their unethical business decisions and future self-continuity. Pearson correlation analysis, independent t-test and Baron and Kenny’s method of mediation analysis were used to analyze the data collected. Result revealed that greater future self-continuity led to fewer unethical business decisions. Significant differences were noticed in the expression of unethical business and future self-continuity of Eastern and Western Nigerians. Future self-continuity did not mediate the difference noticed between the Eastern and Western Nigerians in their unethical business decision. In conclusion, future self-continuity is not a significant mediator of the observed difference in unethical business decisions of Eastern and Western Nigerians.

Abstract:
Literature has shown that Business Continuity Management (BCM) has been of particular interest to the researcher since the establishment of BS 25999 in 2006, although the underlying concept was first introduced in the mid 1980s. Previous studies of BCM have tended to focus on individual organisations and do not deal adequately with supply chains which are also at risk. For supply chains, risk management is usually discussed within the Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM) topic. BCM and SCRM are therefore related but also differ. Both can be conceptualised as a management innovation which is an emerging topic within innovation research and as such factors affecting the adoption of this type of innovation are under-researched. Information and Communication Technology (lCT) had been argued as a potential source of disruption to business and at the same time ICT might be advantageous in supporting BCM and SCRM. This argument seems relevant to relating BCM, SCRM and ICT in terms of their adoption within the supply chain. Data from a questionnaire survey of 110 organisations across various sectors in the United Kingdom (UK) are used to answer the research question: "what are the key determinants to the adoption and the stages of adoption of BCM, SCRM, and ICT in an organisation within its supply network?" The data collected were analysed quantitatively, from simple analyses such as mean scores, and Spearman correlation coefficients, to more sophisticated analysis such as factor analysis, ANOV A, logistic regression and multiple regression. Adoption level, and a second dependent variable (stages of adoption), are predicted by a model with four categories of independent variables including (i) the characteristics of the innovation (BCM, SCRM, and ICT; including, the relative advantage, complexity, compatibility, and observability), (ii) the internal and external factors of innovation characteristics (managers' support, strategy integration, and stakeholders pressure on the innovation), (iii) the characteristics of the organisation (size, position in supply chain, decentralised organisational structure and organisational performance), and (iv) the external environment (stakeholders pressure, system openness, environmental uncertainties and supply chain complexity).

Abstract:
An emerging paradigm shift in the marketing discipline has prompted renewed research interest in the nature and scope of exchange. A common theme in the research to date is a departure from the traditional transactional orientation to a relational perspective of exchange. The relational emphasis is particularly germane to contractual Vertical Marketing Systems (VMS) where the emphasis is on long-term, mutually beneficial interaction between various channel members. The franchisor-franchisee relationship, a type of contractual VMS, is governed by norms that impact system efficiency and effectiveness. Despite the unprecedented growth of international franchising systems in the marketplace, a paucity of empirical attention has focused on cross-national franchisor-franchisee relationships. With many U.S.-based business format franchisors penetrating foreign markets, the primary purpose of the dissertation is to provide insights into tools which franchisors, and franchisees can use during the evolution of the exchange relationship. To identify differences across geographic boundaries, the dissertation simultaneously studies domestic and cross-border franchisor-franchisee relationships.

Abstract:

This qualitative phenomenological study explored the various experiences and understandings of the key differentiators that predict family-owned businesses’ success from the first generation to the third generation. The sample used in this study consisted of ten public family-owned businesses and ten private family-owned businesses. The study utilized open-ended interviews and empirical research to identify relevant themes, trends and relationships. Three clusters of themes emerged: growth, entitlement and differentiation. The study identified those concepts that would explain the historical trajectory of the public and private family-owned companies. Leadership continuity drives succession planning, and leadership is the starting point for successor training, education, and development. The continued survival and growth of the organization depend on employing the right people, in the right position, at the right time. The future of succession planning is an important issue for all firms due to demographic factors, such as the rising number of employees reaching retirement age and the dwindling number of younger workers replacing them.

Full text
Abstract:
Firms acting as suppliers to the British automotive industry have a long history of so doing, with some evidencing histories that predate even the invention of the motor car. In exploring the challenges faced by the descendants of these firms in the 1990s, a review is undertaken of the bodies of literature surrounding the changes wrought through the increased globalisation of the industry; the impact of new manufacturing technologies and techniques; the rising levels of co-operation between firms; and the growing impact of the automotive 'service sector'. Moreover, an exploration is undertaken of the perceived 'realities' of the automotive industry as constructed through discourse, including the ways in which discourse effects a continual reinterpretation and re-evaluation of the historical evolution of the industry. Attention is focused on the implications of the above for the automotive supply chain, and the means for its rationalisation proposed by the major car manufacturers and their partner-suppliers. Post-structuralist approaches are introduced as part of an attempt to establish and appropriate research methodology that can explore and deconstruct the discourses surrounding 'modernity', 'supply chain rationalisation', 'flexible specialisation' and 'globalisation' within the automotive industry. Analytical research is conducted into the small- to medium-sized business that constitute the majority of the supplier base in the United Kingdom, and the findings of this research are compared with those of a similar study conducted a quarter-century ago. In this way, the relationships of these firms with their customers, suppliers, and peers are investigated, as are their perceptions of a changing marketplace and their reactions to the impact of policies such as the 'supply chain rationalisation' pursued by the major automotive manufacturers. Authoritative discourses of industry form, function, and structure are challenged, with voice being granted to the marginalised: small suppliers, 'service sector' firms, or those only partly involved in the automotive industry.

Abstract:
In the last stage of development of capitalism, transfers of businesses are frequent. For this purpose, legal systems have regulated procedures to protect creditors and shareholders. In Peruvian legal system, the General Law of Corporations regulates these kinds of transfers through mergers, divisions and reorganizations. However, those operations influence in employment relationships because of the translation of its productive organizations. Even though, there is no regulation to determine the consequences of transfer in these kinds of relations in an organizational way, this legal gap is tend to be solved through the application of the principle of continuity developed by Peruvian jurisprudence. In this short paper, it defines the concept, elements, and the effects of the transfer of an undertaking from the perspective of labor law, giving special attention to the analysis of what the author calls “collateral “ or unwanted effects transfer , as aspects that go beyond the principle of continuity to safeguard labor rights.

Abstract:
Background: South Africa‘s tax systems have been put in place to obtain contributions from citizens to help the government provide for the needs of society. These needs include the reduction of poverty and unemployment, which is the reason taxes are used to promote investment in small, micro and medium enterprises (SMMEs). SMMEs help the government reduce unemployment and poverty. Main purpose of study: The main purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the tax systems on the sustainability of South African SMMEs. This study performed an analysis of literature to respond to and present the findings in an effective manner. Method: This study used a qualitative methodology with a systematised review to deliver trustworthy findings about the impact of the tax system on the sustainability of South African SMMEs. The study adopted a pragmatic philosophical stance and gathered information from existing journals. Findings: The study reveals that taxes have a negative impact on the sustainability of SMMEs in South Africa. Taxes have been proven to increase compliance costs and to require time to complete forms, submissions and disputes of returns; acquire knew knowledge; or consult with experts. Conclusions: The research papers included in the literature review make it clear that taxes have a negative impact on the sustainability of South African SMMEs. A more comprehensive study is necessary to establish why 90% of SMMEs in South Africa terminate within the first 10 years of operation. However, one reason may be compliance costs arising from tax.

Tracey, Shannon. "Organizational Resilience Indicators Based on a Salutogenic Orientation." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32175.

Abstract:
Disasters such as the recent parliament shooting in Ottawa, Superstorm Sandy, and the Great Japan Sea Earthquake and tsunami are reminders of the roles essential service organizations have in maintaining public health. On a daily basis, organizations are expected to operate under normal conditions, providing goods, services, and community supports. In crisis situations, it is critical that these organizations continue to operate and contribute to adaptive response and recovery in a community. Business continuity planning focuses on ensuring continued functioning of core operations during a disruption. Inherent to the business continuity field is a prevent-and-protect approach to preparedness activities. Asset-mapping exercises have the potential to balance the predominantly risk-based field by focusing on the strengths and capabilities already present within an organization. To understand the value of asset-mapping activities in business continuity plans (BCPs), indicators for organizational resilience are needed. Indicators have the potential to provide essential service organizations with a way to gauge the value of their BCP activities. In addition, this information can help guide decision-makers when developing BCPs. This research is part of a larger project at the University of Ottawa focused on building the empirical evidence base for BCPs and organizational resilience. This thesis, as a sub-study within the larger project, explores assets and indicators for organizational resilience to contribute to the effective evaluation and engagement of organizations in business continuity planning efforts. Emergent themes highlight the importance of assets and their contribution to the adaptive capacity of an organization in the event of a disaster. This study also provides an example list of 28 SMARTT organizational resilience indicators directly derived from organizational assets, providing information that researchers and essential service organizations can use to evaluate business continuity planning activities in relation to organizational resilience.

Abstract:
This work covers process continuity as the source of a business continuity management. In first theoretic part this work connects continuous behavior of systems with the business continuity and the process continuity. Then in second part of the work we look into present knowledge in business continuity management systems and we cover key standards for business continuity management. We also look into connections among those standards for business continuity and we pinpoint chapters of British standard BS 25999-1 with its counterparts in IT service frameworks such as ITIL v3 and COBIT 4.1. In the final part, this work covers use of process analysis and process models as tools for delivering business continuity through process continuity and preparing business continuity plans in utilities.

Shamroukh, Sharif S. "Role of Stand-Alone Business Entities in Sustaining Newly Established Nonprofit Organizations." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/7571.

Full text
Abstract:
Thousands of newly established nonprofit organizations (NPOs) with long-lasting and needed missions disappear annually, which negatively impacts the nonprofit sector in general and the potential recipients of the discontinued NPOs' services. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine the possible influence that the presence of a strategic resource development plan and the establishment of a stand-alone business entity have on the persistence of newly established NPOs that have long-lasting and needed missions in the United States within the context of the theoretical framework resource dependence theory. Research questions focused on the role of commercial activities, particularly the stand-alone business entity model, and the importance of strategic resource development on NPOs' sustainability within the first 5 years of existence. The study population consisted of NPOs that had disappeared within 5 years of existence and those that had remained active for more than 5 years. Data from a researcher-developed survey instrument were collected from 33 representatives of active organizations and 29 representatives of nonactive organizations. Chi-square tests of independence revealed that the strategic resource development plan and the commercial activities/stand-alone business entities were significantly associated with the sustainability of the NPOs. Findings may be used to promote the creation of a strategic resource development plan and/or a stand-alone business entity at the initial stages of NPOs' establishment to sustain their role and contributions in their communities.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the aspects of managing the business continuity by the methodologies of ITIL and Cobit. The main thesis objective is to find out if there exists one general aplicable solution of the business continuity managment process based on the relative approach comparison and integration of both methodologies and afterwards to define this general solution. The secondary thesis objective is to try to specify the problem issue, which is not covered neither one of those methodologies and then integrate it into this general solution. The purpose of first chapter is to analyze and generally describe the business continuity managment area, its relation with IT Service Managment, to define all key issue terms and to give a best practice review dealing with this field. In the following chapters there is a detailed look at the concrete individual approaches of metodics ITIL and Cobit to the area of business continuity managment. The final chapter deals with approach comparison of both methodologies based on by author defined key fields as target group, enterprise type, terminology, mature models, metrics, concept and relative mapping of relevant points. The chapter provides the general complex solution guideline of this issue by simultaneous implementation of both methodologies as well. This is the main contribution of this work. The next contribution consists in the definition of irrational employee behaviour problem during disaster and its integration to this general guidelines.

Miranda, Vianka. "Strategies to Sustain a Real Estate Small Business in Postnatural-Disaster Area." ScholarWorks, 2019. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/6458.

Full text
Abstract:
Many small real estate business leaders lack effective strategies to resume and sustain operations in a postnatural-disaster environment. This multiple case study investigated strategies that 3 small real estate business leaders in southeastern Louisiana used to resume and sustain operations in the aftermath of a natural disaster. The chaos theory and stakeholder theory were the conceptual frameworks for this study. Data were collected from semistructured interviews, and reviews of business continuity plan documents and member checking. The themes that emerged from data analysis were leaders' strategies relating to business planning and innovation, stakeholder engagement, operations management, and disaster responsiveness. Implications of the findings of this study for social change include identification of effective strategies for increasing the sustainability of small businesses in the real estate industry through implementation of proven business continuity strategies that might help keep communities intact, reestablish commerce, and contribute to regional economic sustainability in the aftermath of a natural disaster.
