Charity, Ian. "PhD and professional doctorate : higher degrees of separation?" Thesis, Northumbria University, 2010. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/837/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents an exploration of the "purpose and process" of doctoral education and has twin, equally valuable, purposes: to make an original theoretical contribution and to improve professional practice in this area. This work addresses the lack of pedagogical research into doctoral education at a time when changing perspectives are reshaping the doctoral education landscape. A number of alternatives to the traditional research PhD now exist and this has generated debate as to the specific differences between the various programmes. This research explores the purpose and process of doctoral education from the perspective of the traditional PhD and the professional doctorate and uses Northumbria University as the case study institution. This research is timely since at Northumbria new doctoral programmes are being established and existing professional doctorate programmes are undergoing significant revisions to try and provide distinctive alternatives to the PhD. The current debates regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the PhD and professional doctorates are presented and three key processes of doctoral study are critically reviewed; knowledge generation, supervision and assessment. A distinguishing feature of this research is my own position within the research setting: I am both a DBA student and a member of staff involved with the delivery of doctoral programmes. Furthermore, the product of the research itself is enmeshed with the research topic and I introduce the concept of "compounded insiderness" to describe this situation. Methodologically, this has lead to the adoption of a constructivist ontological stance coupled with an interpretivist theoretical perspective for analysis. The subjectivity of this research and my influence on the research process has been acknowledged as a central feature, demonstrated through reflexive behaviour. The research strategy is inductive in nature with data generated through twenty-two ethically conducted interviews with purposively selected participants in the doctoral research community at Northumbria University. Software has been used to store, organise and manipulate the data that were then analysed using a combination of concept driven and data driven coding structured using Nigel King's template analysis method. Student perceptions were analysed separately within PhD and professional doctorate subgroups and then compared across the two programmes whereas the staff interview data were analysed as a whole. I argue that this research is highly transparent and has the potential to be transferable to other higher education intuitions. This research makes an original theoretical contribution by concluding that, at a broad level of comparison, the taught stage of the professional doctorate separates the routes initially but once the research phase is underway, the PhD and professional doctorate at Northumbria University overlap considerably. Where differences exist, these are subtle and more likely to be related to the purpose of the programmes rather than any tangible differences that would be experienced by students in terms of process. Staff may see the programmes as "notionally different", but the interpretation of the purpose of a professional doctorate is subject to debate, particularly with regard to "making an original contribution to knowledge" and the role of theory. As a consequence, this raises serious questions regarding assessment. Professional doctorates are caught in a difficult position, since they desire to be different to a PhD and to attract different candidates, but must maintain a level of academic parity in order to be attractive. This research aims to improve professional practice at Northumbria University by raising awareness of similarities and differences between the programmes and it has already made an impact in this respect.

Wyer, Peter. "The effects of varying forms and degrees of government intervention upon the effective competitiveness of UK small businesses." Thesis, Aston University, 1990. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/10868/.

Full text
Abstract:
This doctoral thesis responds to the need for greater understanding of small businesses and their inherent unique problem-types. Integral to the investigation is the theme that for governments to effectively influence small business, a sound understanding of the factors they are seeking to influence is essential. Moreover, the study, in its recognition of the many shortcomings in management research and, in particular that the research methods and approaches adopted often fail to give adequate understanding of issues under study, attempts to develop an innovative and creative research approach. The aim thus being to produce, not only advances in small business management knowledge from the standpoints of government policy makers and `lq recipient small business, but also insights into future potential research method for the continued development of that knowledge. The origins of the methodology lay in the non-acceptance of traditional philosophical positions in epistemology and ontology, with a philosophical standpoint of internal realism underpinning the research. Internal realism presents the basis for the potential co-existence of qualitative and quantitative research strategy and underlines the crucial contributory role of research method in provision of ultimate factual status of the assertions of research findings. The concept of epistemological bootstrapping is thus used to develop a `lq partial research framework to foothold case study research, thereby avoiding limitations of objectivism and brute inductivism. The major insights and issues highlighted by the `lq bootstrap, guide the researcher around the participant case studies. A novel attempt at contextualist (linked multi-level and processual) analysis was attempted in the major in-depth case study, with two further cases playing a support role and contributing to a balanced emphasis of empirical research within the context of time constraints inherent within part-time research.

Yang, Hsiao-Pei. "The information search of Taiwanese students within the decision-making of business Master's degrees in Taiwan and in the UK." Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2008. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/10465/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigated Taiwanese students' information search regarding their application choices for business Master's degees in Taiwan). Taiwanese students studying) in Taiwan and Taiwanese students studying in the UK in this study were used to contrast the similarities and differences between the information search of home-based and international students. In the literature review, previous studies on information search were discussed, and a conceptual framework was presented to indicate the stages of students' decision-making and possible external information sources that students might use. As the majority of research was conducted amongst Western English-speaking home-based students, the importance of investigating how information sources could be used differently by Taiwanese applicants was emphasised. The study employed qualitative data collection of focus group discussions, observations and interviews to investigate how participants used information sources to find the information they needed in making Master's choices. Different types of universities in Taiwan and in the UK were sampled to explore students' choice criteria. Template Analysis was used to analyse the data. The findings suggested that the TW group had more internal information which reduced the level of their external search. On the other hand, the UK group as international students needed more external information as a result of lacking internal information. This study also found Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) and educational agents were influential to Taiwanese participants' Master's decision-making. Also, middle range universities are often selected by the UK group, while parental influences were limited to both the TW and the UK group. As current students and alumni were found in this study to be particularly influential regarding applicants' Master's choices, higher education institutions (HEI) should also look after current students when trying to market courses to potential students.

Dunlop, Connie Whittaker. "Degrees of Relevance: A Basic Qualitative Study of How MBA Students Make Their Education Relevant as They Cross Boundaries Between School and Work." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2021. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=28256432.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to explore how working professionals enrolled in MBA programs make their education relevant. This inquiry was guided by the following central research question: How do students enrolled in MBA programs make their education relevant as they cross boundaries between school and work? The central research question was supported by three subquestions: What are the objects crossing the boundary between the MBA program and students’ workplaces? How do MBA students broker learning at the boundary? At what level are interactions occurring and to what end? Grounded in social constructivist epistemology, a basic qualitative method was chosen for this study. Data were collected through 18 semi-structured interviews with 10 students and eight learning partners, 18 field notes that described the context of the interview and early insights from the data collected, and 28 documents such as course descriptions and work presentations. Study participants shared a total of 39 critical incidents of learning that crossed the boundary between school and work. Data were analyzed and synthesized to produce three overall themes, which were translated into a typology of four relevance-making types, which provided the basis for 10 participant profiles. Then, patterns of content, process, and outcomes for each type of relevance-making were analyzed and synthesized. This study found that relevance-making differed by type and depended upon students’ intentions for Innovative Climbing, Identity Switching, Introspective Exploring, or Fast Founding. In Innovative Climbing, students integrated new business concepts from school at work in order to earn promotions. In Identity Switching, students changed how they saw themselves and how others saw them in order to change where they work. In Introspective Exploring, students reflected upon their experiences in ways that informed their career goals. In Fast Founding, a student rapidly introduced business concepts from school into the workplace to sustain his business venture. It was through discovering or realizing these intentions that relevance was made.

Mariampillai, John K. "Collaborative provision within UK higher education : perceptions of stakeholders of UK and Sri Lankan private colleges offering university degrees in business and management." Thesis, University of West London, 2014. https://repository.uwl.ac.uk/id/eprint/1059/.

Full text
Abstract:
Collaborative higher education refers to an array of different arrangements between higher education institutions (HEIs) and other providers - private providers in the case of this thesis. The main focus of the thesis is to understand stakeholders’ perspectives on collaborative partnerships between HEIs and private for-profit providers in the provision of UK degree courses in business and management. Recent decades have seen the massification of HE. The demand for HE in the UK has been growing significantly. But the state has begun to disengage itself from financing HEIs and thus their continuing state funding is under challenge. Market mechanisms have been introduced. Collaborative HE provision between HEIs and private for-profit providers can be seen as an activity undertaken as part of an increasingly marketised UK HE landscape. Management, staff such as link-tutors, and policy-makers in quality organisations were interviewed: thirteen in the UK and six in Sri Lanka. Five former non-European Union (EU) private college international students were interviewed in the UK. Three focus groups were conducted with non-EU private college international students in the UK. This is an exploratory study, from which it is not possible to generalise, but findings indicate that: a. Non-EU international students choose to study in private HE colleges because it enables them to acquire a UK degree at a lower cost. b. Working with private partners in the UK and overseas is perceived to have an economic motive and collaborative partnerships are seen as a partial solution to the difficult financial situation of HEIs. c. Collaborative HE partnerships help UK HEIs to expand their market. d. Government intervention in the private for-profit HE sector is discernible, for example through the Educational Oversight Review of private providers. This is blurring the boundary between what is described as public and private.

Robinson, Dennis E. "An analysis of knowledge of the Bible, private school law, and business and finance between Christian school principals with and without graduate degrees." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2011. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5018.

Full text
Abstract:
The data showed that it did not seem to make a difference whether the respondents had attained a graduate degree in any of the tested fields; there was little or no significant difference in their score. This evidence suggests that no current study program adequately prepares an individual with the knowledge base needed to effectively lead a Christian school, especially in the areas of private school law and business and finance. Given that the review of literature showed that Christian schools most often fail due to financial reasons, this finding is particularly significant. It was suggested that universities look at the principal preparation programs to determine if they can add material which would help to better prepare the Christian school principal. This study indicates a knowledge deficit in the areas of business and finance and private school law, materials added in those areas might prove helpful to this group. Follow-on study was suggested in a larger population of Christian schools, perhaps in the Association of Christian Schools International, to more definitively determine if specially designed graduate programs need to be developed for this population of administrators.; This study analyzed the performance of a sample of K-12 Assemblies of God Christian school principals on the Christian School Principal Preparation Assessment Questionnaire (CSPPAQ). The CSPPAQ, developed especially for this study, assesses knowledge in three areas: knowledge of the Bible, knowledge of private school law, and knowledge of business and finance. A sample size of 102 was determined using the sample size formula, based on a population of 611 and a bound of 4 (??2). Numerous school closures over the course of this study caused the population size to drop to 490. This fact, coupled with a 45% survey return rate called for an adjustment of the bound to 6.4 (??3.2) for a sample size of 42. The scores in each of the three sub-areas as well as the composite score were then analyzed to determine if there was a statistically significant relationship between principals without a graduate degree and those with a graduate degree in Bible/theology, educational leadership and other (any other graduate degree). A single factor ANOVA procedure was used and determined that no statistically significant relationship exists for mean score in knowledge of the Bible (F=1.05, pgreater than].05). Mean score for knowledge of private school law showed a marginally significant difference (F=2.8, p=.054). Mean score in knowledge of business and finance also showed no significant relationship (F=1.7, pgreater than].05) with the same result for the composite score (F=2.18, pgreater than].05). Mean scores in the areas of private school law and business and finance were low (18.7 and 16.2 respectively). Calculating a percentage score for these areas would compute to 53% (18.7/35) and 54% (16.2/30) respectively, indicating a low knowledge base for these areas. Percentage composite score was also low at 63% (55.2/88).
ID: 030423409; System requirements: World Wide Web browser and PDF reader.; Mode of access: World Wide Web.; Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Central Florida, 2011.; Includes bibliographical references (p. 139-141).
Ed.D.
Doctorate
Teaching, Learning and Leadership
Education

Serobe, Matlale Kolojane. "Career capital accumulation through the Master of Business Administration degree." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/22830.

Full text
Abstract:
There have been several debates about the value of an MBA. Proponents of the MBA believe that the MBA contributes greatly to the development of general managers, while critics argue that the MBA course is disconnected from reality and does not equip graduates with the skills required to navigate managerial roles. Against this backdrop, the research aimed to establish which career capital components are accumulated through the MBA and what aspect of the MBA contribute to the accumulation of career capital. The research was conducted in two phases. The first phase of the research was qualitative and comprised ten semi-structured interviews with various stakeholders. The first phase aimed to establish the career capital components that are accumulated through the MBA and the aspects of the MBA that contribute to the accumulation of career capital. The constructs identified in phase one, together with those identified in the literature, were then used as inputs in the design of a self-administered questionnaire distributed in phase two. The questionnaire was sent to a total of 1 129 MBA graduates out of whom 205 completed the questionnaire. The career capital components that are developed through the MBA were identified, as well as the aspects of the MBA that contribute the most to accumulating career capital. The top career capital component identified was the ability to work under pressure. The aspect of the MBA that contributes the most to career capital accumulation was the case study method. Furthermore, the career capital components for which there were significant differences between males and females, as well as between those who completed their studies recently and those who completed them some time ago were also identified. The study found that there were no significant differences in perceived career capital between those who had different types of roles prior to embarking on the MBA. A model that encapsulates the key findings was also developed.
Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2012.
Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS)
unrestricted

Full text
Abstract:
Organizational forms can become institutionalized in the sense that their existence and application is taken-for-granted and perceived as legitimate by stakeholders. Over time, new organizational forms can emerge that challenge perceived legitimacy of the established form. From this perspective, this dissertation examined institutionalization in the context of online business degree programs (OBDP) in higher education. Specifically, this dissertation examined OBDP as an emerging institutionalized form in relation to its cognitive legitimacy (taken-for-grantedness) and sociopolitical legitimacy (appropriateness) from the perspectives of four key stakeholder groups (students, faculty, academic administrators, and business practitioners). Survey results suggest that OBDPs are perceived as cognitively legitimate across each of the groups studied and socio-politically legitimate in each the four groups studied except for faculty. Furthermore, a conjoint experiment was conducted to determine the influence that four program related characteristics (accreditation, reputation, placement after graduation, and physical linkage) have on the legitimacy perceptions of OBDPs. Conjoint results indicate that each of the factors studied were significant predictors of legitimacy with accreditation being the most significant across each of the four groups. These findings provide a novel test of institutional theory as well as contributing to practice by offering strategic guidance to business schools either currently offering ODBPs or those planning to develop an online version of an existing program.

Abstract:
Although understudied in emerging markets, in modern globalised economies, family business internationalization is becoming an increasingly more relevant topic. Consequently, our research focuses on investigating the listed family firms in Chinese Mainland in order to fill the research gap. Specifically, we studied the influence of family involvement in ownership and management of companies on their degree of internationalization. Existing theories on internationalization mainly focused on economic aspects, while we adopt the perspective of socio-emotional wealth (SEW) which refers to non economic aspects to investigate this subject. We take listed family firms in Chinese Mainland as our sample. The results show that family involvement in ownership is positively associated with the degree of internationalization and family involvement in management has no certain relation with the degree of internationalization. This is a different finding in this area since previous researches have not taken Chinese listed family firms as samples before. Future research can improve the SEW theory by testing wider samples.

Abstract:
The purpose of this degree project is to analyze and investigate how digitalization will affect business modeling in the district heating business. The chosen approach to this degree project was an iterative, abductive method, in order to always use a feedback-analysis and to keep the project open for new findings. The interviews were a mix of a structured method and a qualitative approach. With the structured method, the findings from the interviews were similar and regarding the research topic, and the qualitative approach in some open questions led to matters that otherwise would have been unnoticed. The interviews were performed via e-mail, phone and through personal interviews. This degree project concluded that digitalization has an impact on business modeling in district heating. Digitalization will affect some elements in a major way, for example key resources that will be characterized by digitalization. The findings from this work showed that a business model operating in district heating in a time of digitalization should focus on three main parts: economy, environment and easy visualization. An optimization tool should focus on delivering a value that consist of these three, and the remaining elements should together contribute to that value proposition.

Ramanteba, Mooketsi. "The value of tacit knowledge sharing in the degree of Master of Business Administration (MBA) training." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/18148.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study concerns itself with two issues, (i) quality concerns about the MBA and (ii) increasing importance of knowledge management, especially tacit knowledge in the business world. The MBA course of study was established as a measure to prepare individuals aspiring to be managers for leadership positions and was originally targeted at the cream of employees. There are several expectations placed on employees when they are sent by their employers to do an MBA. Among these expectations are that employees are expected to tap into the experience of fellow students while on the program, improve their leadership and management skills, get exposure to knowledge on other fields and to acquire practical business solutions. It is said, though, that the MBA study programme is currently not meeting the desired expectations of the business world, which has, hence, led to the devaluation of this programme as a premier business education course. Conversely, knowledge management has gained significant importance in the recent past, owing to the subsequent empowerment of individuals and organisations to then create a competitive advantage over their rivals. In particular, it has been found that the increasing of tacit knowledge is most crucial for success in this regard. Tacit knowledge resides in the minds of individuals and is acquired after many years through both professional and general life experiences. This valuable knowledge, which is hard to capture, is lost whenever experienced employees leave an organisation, for anyone of various reasons, which may include retirement, change of jobs and/or restructuring . Organisations are, therefore, faced with the challenge of capturing tacit knowledge and then creating an environment where this is freely shared with others within that organisation, to reap the reward and beat any rivals. The objective of this study is to shed more light on tacit knowledge sharing within the MBA study programme and reveal how this action will address concerns relating to the quality of MBA training. In this regard, in this research study an attempt will be made to discover ways of harnessing the tacit knowledge found among the students, to then better the quality of the MBA and increase the value of this study programme. The results of this study did indicate that tacit knowledge is shared among the students in the MBA programme and that it is valuable to the students; that industry related knowledge and professional experience, closely followed by general life experiences, are the most valuable kinds of knowledge gained from fellow students. The sharing of such knowledge usually occurs during group/syndicate activities, with one's fellow students providing the greatest source of the knowledge that one gains. Tacit knowledge is shared equally across the different subject groupings in the MBA study programme, despite prior MBA tacit knowledge being most useful in LeadershiplHR and Strategy courses than in any other. The MBA environment is generally supportive of tacit knowledge sharing. However, a minority of students, mostly women, owing to other students' negative attitudes, find the environment intimidating. Students who participate in the MBA programme possess sufficient prior MBA work experience and higher education qualifications, indicating a wealth of tacit knowledge. The results suggest that business schools must continue to target students who are adequately experienced and who possess higher education qualifications as they are the individuals who possess a wealth of tacit knowledge, which proves to be valuable to all concerned . Additionally, after the value of tacit knowledge in the MBA has been recognised , activities that enhance its sharing are encouraged. The breadth of student experience is crucial to tacit knowledge sharing and, as such, calls for the student recruitment process at business schools to be adjusted accordingly. In addition there is need for the undesirable behaviour of certain students to be kept in check, that valuable tacit knowledge sharing is not missed as a result of intimidation. It is worthwhile noting that, through attraction of students with adequate prior work experience, a higher quality tacit knowledge would be tapped, thereby meeting part of the requirements of the business world for a high quality MBA study programme. In Chapter 1 a general presentation of this subject is presented, and the approach and rationale of the study are explained. In Chapters 2 & 3 an overview of literature relevant to the topic of tacit knowledge management, as well as that of MBA training , is presented. In Chapter 4 the methodology and data gathered are discussed. In Chapter 5 the summary and conclusions of this study are presented and suggestions for future research areas are made.
Voorts is kennisbestuur deesdae baie belangriker, aangesien sekere persone onlangs bemagtig is, en maatskappye graag 'n mededingende voordeel oor hul konkurrente wil behou.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In most developing economies, and in South Africa in particular, students’ perceptions, motives and attitudes towards the Master of Business Administration degree (MBA) have increasingly become a topic of interest to researchers and academics. Given the high number of students registering to study towards an MBA degree each year, this research assignment aimed to investigate and illuminate the perceived impact of an MBA degree from the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) on salary and career advancement. Data was collected through a carefully designed and structured questionnaire. Supplemented by a comprehensive literature review, the study applied descriptive and inferential statistical procedures along with various tools of analysis to analyse the perceived effects of the USB MBA degree on its students’ income and career advancement. The general perception among MBA graduates was that an MBA degree might help them achieve a major breakthrough in their career path and long-term advancement, accompanied by an increase in income. A further perception was that the reputation of an accredited business school would get them rewarding job opportunities at reputable organisations.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.
360-degree feedback is a personal development and appraisal tool designed to quantify the competencies and skills of fellow employees by tapping the collective experience of their superiors, subordinates, and peers. Substantially better than the hierarchical, single-source assessments employees are familiar with, this multi-source system provides participants with a comprehensive interpretation of their performance from numerous perspectives within the organization. The objective of this thesis is to develop a 360-degree feedback system tailored specifically for the Dean position, Graduate School of Business and Public Policy, Naval Postgraduate School. This thesis presents a literature review, a case description involving the Dean position, and discusses a series of interviews conducted with key groups of organizational stakeholders. With the results of this research confirming the need for and potential content of a feedback system, this thesis culminates by presenting 360- degree feedback procedures and documents created specifically for the Dean position.

Abstract:
In a fast-paced dynamic world, the key to success lies in the ability to accept change and to rapidly respond to demands placed by ever increasing competitive environments. In business, the impact of products and services in meeting or exceeding customer’s expectations in such environments is measured by customer satisfaction and the importance thereof cannot be downplayed, thus providing management with a metric that guides and augments change. Subsequently, these dynamic competitive forces are pushing sectors such as Higher Education into the realm of service industries, where stakeholders such as students and alumni are viewed as customers. Correspondingly, measuring their satisfaction has become important as this provides strategic insight, whilst enhancing academic programmes and the student experience. The purpose of this research study was to identify the factors that determined satisfaction with the MBA programme as viewed by students and the alumni of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Business School. Furthermore, it advanced the field of stakeholder theory by identifying alumni as a key stakeholder in business schools. Consequently, the research was exploratory and consisted of quantitative and literature components where hypotheses were developed and relationships between factors analysed, in addition to the literature reviewed. The literature introduced key concepts to this study, such as alumni as stakeholder, alumni satisfaction, satisfaction with the MBA programme, measuring alumni satisfaction, MBA alumni networks and alumni communication. The factors that determined alumni satisfaction were identified by means of a statistical analysis of the data collected by the research instruments. Correspondingly, the findings indicate various factors determine satisfaction with the independent variables highlighted in this study, which are the Facilities, the MBA Programme, the Social Experience, the NMMU Business School Alumni Chapter, the NMMU Business School brand and Communication. Furthermore, it was established that there is a significant link between Social Experience, the NMMU Business School Alumni Chapter, the NMMU Business School Brand, Communication and Alumni Satisfaction. As services industries such as Higher Educational Institutions get exposed to competitive pressure, customer satisfaction comes to the fore and there are certain factors that need to be addressed to enhance satisfaction. Subsequently, this study highlights this pressure and satisfaction levels can certainly be improved by the institution across all the independent variables identified, especially in areas such as the NMMU Business School Alumni Chapter and Communication. Consequently, the NMMU Business School, for the first time have metrics to identify the factors that determine satisfaction with the MBA programme as viewed by their alumni and resultantly can strategically benefit by taking the views of their most important stakeholder into account.

In order to maximize the joy associated with elective subjects (this should be one of the highlights of the MBA course), a procedure was developed that will schedule electives in such a way that the maximum number of students will be satisfied completely. This procedure harnesses the power of the modern computer and solves the problem with brute force. The computing part of the process takes less than 10 minutes. A very high level of student satisfaction (the highest level possible) is guaranteed with the correct use of this procedure.
Abstract:
This thesis examines the student experience of international higher education through a case study of joint Masters degrees in business taught in two countries. The thesis explored how the ‘joint degree’ experience impacts on the way students undertake their learning and intercultural ‘negotiations’. The focus on cultural interaction, international mobility, relationality between students and the way students experience the learning environment as dimensions of their experience furthers an understanding of international higher education. The exploration of the individual students’ ‘lived reality’ demonstrates the complexity and limitations of such programmes of study as well as the importance of culture, being the fabric of meaning for individuals (Geertz, 1973) in relation to and as part of the educational experience of a joint degree. This overarching dimension of culture is given prominence in this work, not only in terms of the culture of the institutions that the students study in, but also in terms of the different national education systems, of which those institutions are part and more generally in terms of the different cultures that students have to negotiate as part of their experience. The research approach was through a case study method, relying on the use of mixed methods for data collection to provide a ‘thick’ description of the experiences of joint degrees and a triangulation of the findings for each data set. The thematic analysis of the data focussed on individuals’ construction of their reality in order to gain an understanding of that reality. The concept of ‘relationality’ is introduced to refer to the learning that occurs as a result of the recognition of the ‘other’. It denotes a learning environment where students learn with and from other students and as a result of their country mobility. As a consequence they develop their intercultural awareness. This relationality is seen as a cornerstone of the experience of joint degrees and is significant to the achievement of inter-cultural learning.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2001.
Some digitised pages may appear cut off due to the condition of the original hard copy.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The world of 'business learning' is changing dramatically and business sc'iools therefore need to respond differently to the demands of the market place, not only to survive, but to grow as well. To achieve this objective, feedback from students with regards to a course and lecturer form a part of the effective management and delivery of educational instruction, as evaluation of performance provides an important instrument in clarifying goals and standards and enhancing future performance. The focus of this study is, therefore, to determine firstly differences in the perceptions of students with regards to the teaching of Industrial and Social Relations within the MBA programme at the USB. The relevance of the research is that differences between students following the four programmes, namely full-time, part-time, modular English and modular Afrikaans, may affect their commitment to the subject, which in turn may affect the quality of the programme. Secondly, it is also necessary to compare the lecturer's objectives pertaining to his particular approach and course content, to the perceptions of the students and to establish the degree of congruence between these. To test the consistency of the evaluation process, a brief comparison of the four MBA classes of 2000 as a whole is made with the first class of 2001 completed at the time of writing. The sample groups were comprised of students who had completed the course evaluation questionnaire. This was voluntary in nature. The data collected was interpreted in terms of the Wilcoxan Rank Sum Test within a framework of fifty-six hypotheses. The hypotheses were formulated from theories relating to the course and students. There are however, a number of limitations contained in this study. The pertinent ones are that the course evaluation questionnaire used is the same for every course within the MBA programme. No distinction is made between the different subjects. The validity of the instrument may, therefore, be impaired and the results not entirely conclusive of students' views. The questionnaires were also completed unaided and it is possible that students did not interpret the questions correctly. This notwithstanding, the research within the parameters of this study points to some minor differences between the students of the four MBA programmes. More importantly, however, it identifies a very strong degree of congruence between the students' perceptions and the lecturer's objectives in the teaching of Industrial and Social Relations. These results have given the lecturer, apart from some general 'pointers' on how to improve the course, the assurance to continue with his present approach to the 'teaching' of Industrial and Social Relations within the MBA programme at the USB. This study should be seen merely as a preliminary trial, and all constraints notwithstanding, it should serve as a starting point for future research.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
Namakwa Sands experienced a severe breakdown in labour relations resulting in a protected strike in 2006. During the ensuing strike, conditions deteriorated to such an extent that the mass action spiralled out of control and led to destruction of company property and subsequently the dismissal of employees. Following this, the company further underwent a dramatic organisational change during the latter quarter of 2008 and through 2009 when Anglo American Public Limited Company (PLC) divested its share of mineral sands business to Exxaro Resources. This study investigated the successes and failures encountered during this change management programme, taking cognisance of the poor labour relations prior to the acquisition by Exxaro Resources. Change management is a systemic and structured approach to move people from a state of dissatisfaction to a future position of satisfaction that benefits the organisation. Various models and well-defined literature currently exist to guide management during a successful process of change management. The focus of this research report is on the change management process followed during the transition period of change of ownership from Anglo American to Exxaro Resources, determining the successes and failures during this period as measured by the “Best Company to Work for” (BC2W4) surveys conducted by Deloitte and Touche. A further comparison is done between the process followed by Namakwa Sands and that of subject literature and two existing, well-recognised change management models generally in use, namely the ADKAR Model and John Kotter’s eight-step change management process model. “Overall, change management is about helping people through change. It is the process, tools and techniques for proactively managing the people side of change in order to achieve the desired business results” (Hiatt & Creasy, 2003: 10).

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The University of Stellenbosch Business School integrates environmental, social responsibility and corporate governance teaching in all its MBA courses. In 2012, it also introduced a stand-alone course, Business in Society, to improve students‟ knowledge of these topics and improve their decision-making ability. To enhance the course further, a social engagement project was piloted with the 2013 full-time cohort. The aim of the research paper is to determine the impact that the Social Engagement Project had on the participating students and to make recommendations for improving future engagements. The research method employed was content analysis of the reflective essays that the students wrote on assessing the course. Only essays for which permission was obtained from the students were used in the research. The success of the engagement in terms of experiential learning was firstly determined in relation to the Kolb learning cycle and literature regarding specifically service-learning. The impact on the students was then measured against Bloom‟s taxonomy, specifically focusing on the affective domain. Lastly, the effect the theory of planned behaviour was used to determine the influence the engagement had on the behavioural intentions of the students. From the content analysis it was determined that as an experiential learning engagement the project was a success In terms of Bloom‟s affective learning domain the learning dimension achieved by most students was the organisation dimension. Considering the limited duration of the course, this can be deemed a success. Two of the three independent determinants in the theory of planned behaviour that could be analysed, namely perceived behavioural control and attitude towards behaviour, were both positively influenced by the engagement. From a theoretical point of view, the Social Engagement Project could therefore be deemed a success. Areas for improvement that were however identified relate to students original motivations for choosing their projects that were not met. The main reason for this was very high initial expectations that were never congruent with the time available for projects. This factor can have a negative effect on the future behavioural intentions of the students, and the writer therefore proposes that the expectations of students be managed in order to obviate these shortcomings. The analysis of student recommendations revealed three main themes requiring attention, i.e. appropriate project identification, better time allocation, and improved support from faculty. Using these themes and the information learnt from the content analysis, final recommendations were made.

Reid, F. "Learning about student success from students' stories : a narrative study of successful business degree students at a New Zealand university." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2018. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/3028046/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to better understand how students' prior experiences and contexts contributed to their success in an undergraduate business degree in a New Zealand University. The study used a narrative approach underpinned by hermeneutics. I undertook semi-structured interviews with ten students about their family background and educational history, followed by a two-stage analysis process. Firstly the data were developed into stories and then the data were re-analysed using a Bourdieusian lens. Three different developments by scholars of Bourdieu's thinking tools, namely the concepts of learning career, habitus tug and interrupted trajectories, were combined to provide the theoretical framework to analyse the data. The findings revealed diverse backgrounds and experiences of the student participants but all had a positive fit with the university environment, and possessed attitudes and behaviours consistent with possessing the habitus of an educated person. While the narratives did not disclose significant parental involvement in the students' education, they did disclose emotional support by parents, reinforcing the value the parents placed on education. The study also revealed differing journeys in the development of academic confidence, with experiences of success in education fostering academic confidence to varying degrees. The study makes a contribution to our knowledge about student success through extending the concept of educated habitus to higher education as an explanation for success, and using a combination of the concepts of learning career, habitus tug and trajectory interruption as a means to explore how the students developed that educated habitus. The application of those concepts in the New Zealand higher education context, where Bourdieu's thinking tools have seldom been used, resulted in some nuances to be added to these concepts including that the study showed that cultural and peer attitudes can trigger habitus tug, and that the devastation of failure appeared to be less about being a non-traditional student and more related to fragile levels of academic confidence. The implications for practice in supporting students in the business degree include recognition of the individuality of students' lives and the role experiences outside university have to play in success, suggesting holistic rather than only academically-focused support for students is desirable, along with encouragement for students to specifically address their concept of success and how to achieve it. A further area for study is analysis of the experiences and context of students who are not successful.

Abstract:
Addressing environmental issues is becoming increasingly important for businesses and NGOs. In addition, through the internationalisation of these organisations, the problem is becoming global. To address environmental issues in an effective way, there is a need to form a cross-sector collaboration between NGOs and businesses. Thus, to have a successful collaboration, it is important to search for suitable partners. This thesis investigates the partner search process of NGOs for cross-sector collaboration. It investigates how the process of partner search with regard to drivers for collaboration, formation typology, success factors compatibility, resources, and capability, as well as trust affect the partner search of three NGOs with different internationalisation degrees. A literature review has been conducted to investigate what has been discussed regarding the key concepts: environment, internationalisation degree, partner search, formation, drivers, and success factors. The resulted conceptual framework is used to analyse the empirical data. The study was conducted following an abductive approach since existing literature is only existent on firm-perspective so far. To investigate the NGO´s partner search for potential business partners, the thesis follows qualitative research where semi-structured interviews were conducted to create three single cases. The cases represent three internationalisation degrees, namely local NGO, regional NGO, and international NGO. The analysis discusses the differences and similarities between the empirical findings and the theoretical findings. The conclusion suggests that the internationalisation degree influences the partner search process slightly in every key concept. This is mainly due to the interdependence between each concept, which challenges a clear distinction. Nevertheless, the main implication for theory is the contribution to the so-far missing NGO perspective on the partner search in cross-sector collaboration. This thesis also provides practical implications where it appeals for NGOs to clearly understand the intention of the business partner for the collaboration and build trust. The study concludes with limitations and future research implications.

Abstract:
96
With the booming and rapid development of derivative market, the financial products have now blossomed into diversification. Because of the potential correlation between the trades of derivatives and the results of corporate operation, which might have strong influence on the market, the financial statements of the corporations in terms of their financial information of derivatives, accordingly, have become relatively important. In this study, the samples were the annotations taken from 119 listed companies’ annual reports between the year 2005 and the year 2007, and these annotations were made according to Taiwan’s SFAS No.36. The aim of the study was to evaluate the differences of the disclosure degrees of the financial information before and after the year 2006, when Taiwan’s SFAS No.34 was administered. In term of data analysis, the Pearson’s correlation test was used to find the relations among the variables, and the logistic regression test was used to see if there was any trend that can be used as a predictor. As the results indicated, the higher the disclosure degree of the financial information was, the better the value of the enterprise was. Moreover, companies which had high benefit and loss tended to have high degrees of disclosure of their information on their financial products.

Abstract:
95
Recently, people care about corporate governance and intellectual capital, and pay more attention to whether the intellectual capital will be influenced on corporate governance. Because of the influence of corporate governance on discretion, company enhanced the corporate governance may reduce manager’s discretion and hurt the future value of the company. On the grounds that corporate governance may influence the benefit of developing intellectual capital through interfering manager’s discretion, this study divided samples into three groups based on the intensity of corporate governance to examine the association between intellectual capital and business performance in terms of corporate governance, and whether the high level of corporate governance reduce the benefit of developing intellectual capital. The sample of this study was publicly traded companies in U.S.A. The empirical results show that the efficient capital market of America reacts to intellectual capital positively and there are deferred effects. However, the benefit of intellectual capital is still unable to appear on financial performance. As for the moderating effect of corporate governance, the results show that the intensity of corporate governance has moderating effect on the association between customer capital, innovative capital, and firm’s market value, and firm’s market value will be positively influenced on customer capital and innovative capital strongest under medium intensity of corporate governance. As to the association between the intellectual capital and firm’s financial performance, the results show that the intensity of corporate governance has no moderating effect on it. The results have two implications: One is that intensity of corporate governance affects the behavior of managers’ discretion, and the medium intensity of corporate governance is adaptable to enterprise. The other is that the capital market of USA is an efficient market.
