Abstract:
ABSTRACT This paper and presentation will focus on the importance of developing a comprehensive emergency management plan and how it could be integrated with your corporate crisis management plan along with federal, state, and local response agencies. Industrial Business Continuity represents a comprehensive planning process that includes everything from risk assessment and response operations through recovery. The trend over the past few years has been to move from a corporate profit structure to strategic business units with plant managers increasingly responsible for overall business development. Traditionally, business continuity focuses on systems and data recovery, while regulatory requirements tend to focus on emergency response and compliance. Industrial Business Continuity goes a step beyond both of those. It focuses on quality and critical business functions as well as the more traditional risk assessment and emergency response procedures that are found in most plans. In today's world, a measure of quality for the plant manager is how quickly and efficiently the plant can resume normal operations and circumstances after a major incident. This process includes such areas as community relations and risk communications., those areas that are usually associated with recovery. An Industrial Business Continuity plan that is developed to enhance a facility's response and recovery capability and is developed solely within facility boundaries does not accurately reflect its actual capability. Companies must integrate their crisis and emergency management programs within their corporation and with pertinent external response agencies. The benefits of integrating these plans far surpass the costs of program development.

Abstract:
Business Plan Competitions are a powerful learning tool that can stimulate creativity but more importantly, prepares participants for the real world of entrepreneurship (Desplaces et al., 2008:926). It can be argued that such competitions reflect the imperative elements of any successful entrepreneurship program by fostering experiential learning, networking, mentoring, partnership with entrepreneurship organisations and community involvement (Desplaces et al., 2008:926). Globally, there has been an enormous growth in encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation as a means to foster economic health (Russell et al., 2008:123). As this is not the only concern within nations, these Business Plan Competitions are seen to provide a platform for emerging entrepreneurs to learn through actual participation. South Africa, as a developing country, has embraced this platform and has developed its own competitions. These competitions vary from industry to industry, and all have dissimilar aims and objectives. The stated Business Plan Competition was meant to provide a platform from which aspiring entrepreneurs could receive exposure for their business ideas and developing entities. The investigation found that 59.2% of respondents had already started their businesses and 40.8% had not yet started their business. On both fronts, the competition would prove to be beneficial and the exposure worthwhile in nature. It was found that 10.7% of respondents started their businesses after the Business Plan Competition, and if this percentage were to be projected to the entire entree population, it can be estimated that 556 individuals were enabled to start their business. If the competition were to be repeated it is imperative that annual evaluation be conducted based on the objectives and aims set out by the host organisation for the Business Plan Competition itself. From the research results obtained, suggestions were derived indicating where the competition can be improved upon.

Abstract:
This article offers a critical discussion of the role of the business plan in current enterprise educational practice. In addition to reviewing recent work that considers the ‘for’ and ‘against’ arguments about the use of business plans in higher education, the authors suggest that the context of student learning is largely omitted from these discussions. As such, they contextualize the debate so that the purpose of the business plan can be better appreciated. They build on recent work that offers alternatives to the business plan – approaches directly focused on customer discovery and explicit testing of assumptions. In doing so, recent concerns about the value of business plans and, conversely, the views of those who argue in favour of the role of business plans in enterprise education, are noted. The article provides insights into emerging alternative practices in the field of enterprise education, practices based on students' use of such education as a vehicle for skills and knowledge development and/or wealth creation. It is acknowledged that various biases are present in the current debate, including those of the present authors: whilst it is accepted that these biases are unlikely to disappear, the article contextualizes their origins.

Thesis: S.M. in Real Estate Development, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Program in Real Estate Development in conjunction with the Center for Real Estate, 2016.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (pages 84-85).
This thesis explores the redevelopment potential of a historically landmarked church building in Cambridge, MA. The building is in a rapidly developing area in constant need of new housing. The proposal is bound by the constraints mandated by the building's historical designation, a ground lease payment to its owner, and a new chapel to serve the local community. The development plan must be sensitive to a number of stakeholder concerns, which are addressed through conscious design interventions, programmatic elements, and stress-tested financial projections. This document is divided amongst market and site context, a program and design outline, and a financial proposal reflecting nuanced market assumptions. It is prepared from the perspective of the developer / general partner. The thesis concludes with the overall feasibility of redevelopment on the site and demonstrates why the authors and their vision are uniquely suited for this redevelopment.
by Francesca B. Abstract:
Cooperatives in the EU Member States are subject to the provisions of the Council Regulation 1435/2003. However, cooperative legislation is different among the EU states and most countries have specific rules applicable to cooperatives. There are some steps for setting up a cooperative, which are summarized in: Identification of a common economic goal for potential members, decision about the number of members recruited, their rights and responsibilities, determination of business feasibility, development of a business plan, preparation of legal papers and implementation of the business plan. In many European countries, cooperatives can have a legal status either as a cooperative society with limited or unlimited liability, as an economic interest grouping or as a joint-stock company. Most EU Member have no mandatory provision regarding the minimum capital stock or the minimum number of members for setting up a cooperative.

Abstract:
The development of innovative industrial products and systems, like e.g. aeronautical parts, is characterized by its complex processes under tight constraints. The involvement of multiple disciplines, departments and subcontractors to plan and create the optimal solution to fulfill given requirements under the constraints of time, money and quality leads to an urgent need in professional project management and monitoring. Although project management allows the comprehensive planning of the processes, detailed workflows and their implementation cannot directly be enforced, controlled and documented. Especially the lack in documentation and traceability leads to uncertainty in project execution and monitoring, as well as unconformity within the development of vital and safety critical products and systems. Best practices are substituted by ad hoc steps to meet deadlines like milestones and sync-points. Workflow management systems, which could offer some support to reduce addressed uncertainty, do not cover all involved parties and are not directly linked to the project management, leading to characteristic problems in such development projects. This paper presents a new approach to enforce the implementation of planned project plans in development projects with multiple development parties, based on business rules to increase traceability and documentation as well as to promote the adoption of best practices in project execution. The emphasis is placed on two aspects, namely a methodology of modularization of project plans and the formulation in business rules which are to be executed in business rules management systems as well as the implementation of a best practice repository based on the project plan modules. The modularization of project plans in combination with a linked business rules management system allows on the one hand promoting best practice application in project execution and on the other hand to save gathered project planning knowledge based on the actual implementation of the plan and to reuse it in forthcoming similar projects. A further important advantage is the ability to plan and enforce documentation of the actual execution of work packages and deviation from the plan, with a major impact on traceability. The work presented here has a valuable implication on the traceability in complex development processes and facilitate the application of best practices through project management by providing project plan modules with attached rules for their implementation in workflows.

INDOT will soon be embarking on infrastructure planning to accommodate autonomous vehicles. This new technology affords the ability to impact economic value creation across the supply chain in Indiana, as well as foster economic development in Indiana to support these emerging technologies. This proposal will be a first cut towards exploring the development of a strategy to realize this potential. Our proposal will consist of two phases. Phase 1: A focus on industry choices and plans that can inform INDOT choices. Phase 2: A focus on INDOT’s internal decision making, risk tolerance, and choices regarding infrastructure projects.

Abstract:
This master thesis explores the challenges for waste management business models in the field of textiles regarding the requirements of the circular economy, as well as improvement potentials in the current framework conditions. It is concerned with the research question: "Is it advisable to change the frame-work conditions at meso or macro level, with regard to business models for waste management companies in the textile sector that are oriented towards the requirements of the circular economy, and - if so - in what way?” The approach of the study is based on the delta analysis of the e Society for Institutional Analysis at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. It compares the target state of the normative requirements with the actual state of the textile and waste management framework conditions and attempts to identify the gaps (the delta). Based on the delta, it develops approaches that are intended to help reduce the gaps. The thesis develops three business models for the target year 2025 in different areas: an exchange platform for sorters, recyclers and designers, an automatic sorting plant and a plant for fibre-to-fibre recycling of mixed materials. It is becoming clear that these business models cannot meet the target requirements for the circular economy. The analysis identifies the remaining gaps in the framework conditions as the main problem. For example, insufficient innovation impulses and the lack of competitiveness of secondary raw materials inhibit the actors from applying and using new technologies and business models. Restricted access to knowledge and information, as well as a lack of transparency between the actors, also prove to be problematic. In order to answer the research question, the study recommends altering the framework conditions at meso and macro level. It proposes a platform for cooperation between designers, the introduction of a material declaration system and an eco-design guideline for textiles as possible development options. In addition, this work offers a matrix of criteria to help the actors test and improve their new waste management business models regarding their suitability for the circular economy. The analysis is carried out from an outsider's perspective on the entire textile industry. It therefore cannot cover and deal with all aspects and individual circumstances of each player in detail. The necessary changes in the framework conditions that have been identified can therefore be used as a basis for further investigations.

Abstract:
There is some evidence of the private sector playing a role in supporting refugee livelihoods and self-reliance in Uganda during the period 2016-2020. However, a number of evaluations and research reports highlight the potential for greater private sector involvement, if existing constraints are addressed. Key lessons identified in the literature include the need for more research, especially on market potential, to address the existing knowledge gaps on the role the private sector can play in supporting refugee livelihoods and self-reliance in Uganda. The literature notes that limited access to capital, as well as appropriate financing schemes, are key constraints to the growth of the agribusiness sector. Furthermore, access to natural resources required for agri-business, such as land and water needs to receive more attention from NGOs and donors. The evidence also shows that there is a need for guidelines on the monitoring and evaluation of humanitarian adaptations of market systems development programming. The literature also notes that local actors should be involved in the design and assessment of investment opportunities and risk of interventions to increase project impact.

Abstract:
In the decade after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, African Americans made historic gains in accessing employment opportunities in racially integrated workplaces in U.S. business firms and government agencies. In the previous working papers in this series, we have shown that in the 1960s and 1970s, Blacks without college degrees were gaining access to the American middle class by moving into well-paid unionized jobs in capital-intensive mass production industries. At that time, major U.S. companies paid these blue-collar workers middle-class wages, offered stable employment, and provided employees with health and retirement benefits. Of particular importance to Blacks was the opening up to them of unionized semiskilled operative and skilled craft jobs, for which in a number of industries, and particularly those in the automobile and electronic manufacturing sectors, there was strong demand. In addition, by the end of the 1970s, buoyed by affirmative action and the growth of public-service employment, Blacks were experiencing upward mobility through employment in government agencies at local, state, and federal levels as well as in civil-society organizations, largely funded by government, to operate social and community development programs aimed at urban areas where Blacks lived. By the end of the 1970s, there was an emergent blue-collar Black middle class in the United States. Most of these workers had no more than high-school educations but had sufficient earnings and benefits to provide their families with economic security, including realistic expectations that their children would have the opportunity to move up the economic ladder to join the ranks of the college-educated white-collar middle class. That is what had happened for whites in the post-World War II decades, and given the momentum provided by the dominant position of the United States in global manufacturing and the nation’s equal employment opportunity legislation, there was every reason to believe that Blacks would experience intergenerational upward mobility along a similar education-and-employment career path. That did not happen. Overall, the 1980s and 1990s were decades of economic growth in the United States. For the emerging blue-collar Black middle class, however, the experience was of job loss, economic insecurity, and downward mobility. As the twentieth century ended and the twenty-first century began, moreover, it became apparent that this downward spiral was not confined to Blacks. Whites with only high-school educations also saw their blue-collar employment opportunities disappear, accompanied by lower wages, fewer benefits, and less security for those who continued to find employment in these jobs. The distress experienced by white Americans with the decline of the blue-collar middle class follows the downward trajectory that has adversely affected the socioeconomic positions of the much more vulnerable blue-collar Black middle class from the early 1980s. In this paper, we document when, how, and why the unmaking of the blue-collar Black middle class occurred and intergenerational upward mobility of Blacks to the college-educated middle class was stifled. We focus on blue-collar layoffs and manufacturing-plant closings in an important sector for Black employment, the automobile industry from the early 1980s. We then document the adverse impact on Blacks that has occurred in government-sector employment in a financialized economy in which the dominant ideology is that concentration of income among the richest households promotes productive investment, with government spending only impeding that objective. Reduction of taxes primarily on the wealthy and the corporate sector, the ascendancy of political and economic beliefs that celebrate the efficiency and dynamism of “free market” business enterprise, and the denigration of the idea that government can solve social problems all combined to shrink government budgets, diminish regulatory enforcement, and scuttle initiatives that previously provided greater opportunity for African Americans in the government and civil-society sectors.
