The development plan must be sensitive to a number of stakeholder concerns, which are addressed through conscious design interventions, programmatic elements, and stress-tested financial projections. This document is divided amongst market and site context, a program and design outline, and a financial proposal reflecting nuanced market assumptions. Full text
Abstract:
Leasey is a home rental marketplace that provides greater visibility and efficiency for both landlords and tenants in a $1.3 billion student housing market. Leasey was created because students lack a comprehensive tool to find and acquire off-campus housing. Landlord’s properties get lost in mass aggregators (e.g. Craigslist, Zillow, etc.). Landlords also dedicate time and resources to leasing out their properties and miss opportunities by settling on the first tenant to approach them in order to avoid the threat of vacancies. Leasey is the only one-stop shop online rental marketplace that helps students acquire off- campus housing and enables landlords to achieve the fair market value for their rentals. Through a unique blind auction mechanism, renters determine for themselves, relative to the landlord’s reserve price, how much they are willing to pay per month for a property. For students, the model eliminates first-come first-served practices associated with securing a lease and empowers them to bid what they consider a fair rate for their future home. Landlords can view multiple offers and select the right fit for their property based on bid and qualifications, instead of the first person to submit an application and sign a lease. Other long-term turn-key features include the ability to form groups, the addition of standard lease applications for prospective tenants, and an open house scheduling tool.

The ramp-up of the SLP site encompassed two focus areas that are the topics for this thesis. The first area of focus was to create a business development guide that supports Mexican and North American division managers, plant managers, and their supporting personnel to successfully establish new business in SLP. Having such a guide available is expected to reduce start-up time of operations, increase decision-making speed, improve productivity in multi-divisional projects, and ultimately increase potential internal business opportunities. This thesis presents a case study on how this guide was designed, developed, and implemented. The second focus area was to implement several Lean principles, the most significant one being "5S." A case study on its planned application, procedure to measure implementation level and effectiveness on quality, productivity, and on-time delivery is discussed. A discussion on the stronger emphasis by management on implementation measurement versus effectiveness measurement and possible reasons for this gap of expectations is also presented. Finally, the production area for the Robot Refurbishment line was redesigned based on the target of reducing factory floor space for use in other ventures, meanwhile simultaneously increasing lead times in the manufacturing process.
by Miguel Ernesto Sosa Rangel.
S.M.
M.B.A.

Iyer, Megan. "The development of a strategic plan for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education and Culture." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/49681.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: "The national education leadership is unanimous that our system of education and training has major weaknesses and carries deadly baggage from our past. Large parts of our system are seriously dysfunctional. It will not be an exaggeration to say that there is a crisis at each level of the system" (The Natal Mercury, Tuesday 27 July 1999). The above heart-wrenching statement by Professor Kader Asmal, Minister of Education, echoes the sentiments and concerns of all stakeholders within the KwaZulu-Natal schooling fraternity. This study project proposes that the biggest reason for the present crisis in education in KwaZulu-Natal is that there is no formal, structured and focused strategic management process. The objective of the study project is to craft a strategic plan for the KwaZulu- Natal Department of Education and Culture (hereafter referred to as KZNDEC), thereby providing a catalyst to the department in realising the importance of strategic management, while illustrating the application of the strategic management process in the department. The first part of the study project is intended to set the scene. Chapter 2, firstly, provides an overview of strategic management, and, secondly, discusses the application of strategic management in the public sector. It emphasises that public organisations function in an environment where there is a lesser degree of market exposure and a greater degree of reliance on appropriations from authoritative bodies than with private sector organisations. This significant difference has necessitated two minor adaptations to the model, as designed in chapter 3. The model as proposed by Thompson and Strickland (1996: 4) was adapted to suit the needs of the KZNDEC. The second part of the study project is the practical application of the model, designed in chapter 3, to the KZNDEC. Given the seriousness of the situation, the widespread and complicated "cancerous" problems plaguing the department, and the expectations of stakeholders, chapter 7 proposes that the primary means of achieving its vision, and thereby meeting its new demands and challenges, is to reinvent the department by creating a high-performance organisation. The following strategies are proposed: • The recruitment, into key strategic positions in the department, of a team of high powered business-cultured individuals that are fully empowered and supported by the national and provincial Ministers of education; • The design and implementation of management structures, as proposed in Figure 3.3, to cost-effectively support the core activities of the department; • To create a performance driven culture underpinned by good work ethic and a strong value system; • Develop the professional quality of the teaching force by educators being well trained and thoroughly prepared in organisational, administrative, managerial and research skills in order to run schools like successful businesses; • Develop administrative competence that fully supports the core activities through rationalisation of the administrative functions at "centres of excellence" to overcome scarce skills and budgetary constraints; • The building of capacity through focused and intensive training and developmental programmes; • To restrict personnel costs to at most 85% oftotal costs; • Address the inequity in education provision through the implementation of the norms and minimum standards for the funding of public schools; • Fostering public-private partnerships with International Donor Agencies to assist by way of financial aid, skills transfer, and training and development; • Improve the public image of the department; and • A commitment to the concept of Ubuntu with emphasis on caring. The end result of the study project is a clearly defined, thorough and well thought-out strategic plan for the KZNDEC, which could be of immense benefit in assisting the department to compile their own strategy. There are a few thought-provoking strategies that are sensitive and radical, as good strategy should be.

Serrano, Rico Azael Erly. "An action research approach to develop a framework for the development of dot-com ventures for SMEs." Thesis, Brunel University, 2012. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/6972.

Full text
Abstract:
Internet adoption and e-business has been of particular interest amongst researchers and practitioners, however, most of the studies focus on large organisations and only recently there has been a shift of interest to e-commerce/business adoption by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) with little or no reference to dot-com initiatives. It is well documented that SMEs have significant and different challenges in comparison to large organisations in the brick and mortar domain. Therefore, investments in the e-business domain (such as dot-com start-ups) present even more challenges to SMEs. Consequently, this research offers an in-depth study of the start-up process of a dot-com company by examining the stages, phases, and components that are key for this process. The empirical contexts of this research are three projects with three different SMEs that have actively participated in the creation of a new dot-com venture. These were analysed using an action research approach with interpretative and qualitative analysis. The main component of the action research approach covers a longitudinal study (2 years) divided in four cycles, followed by two case studies used for the evaluation of the findings of this research. These results of all research cycles, which in turn, can be considered the contributions to theory and practice of this research, can be seen in two ways: the development of a start-up framework for SMEs, and a Business Information Database (BID) that supports the implementation of the framework. The framework is designed to visualise, from a strategic perspective, the stages that an organisation have to go through in order to initiate a new dot-com venture. Is proved that organisations have, directly or indirectly, followed specific steps related to the phases described in the framework. Hence new entrepreneurs can use the phases of the framework to facilitate and ease their start-up process looking at the main features of each phase. The BID was constructed under two premises: a) to structure the main documents and corresponding building blocks used in industry and in the proposed framework, such as the Strategic Plan, Business Model, Business Plan, and Business Case, and b) to identify the relationships among the building blocks of all the aforementioned documents. The BID and related documents can be used to identify how a particular piece of information (e.g. building block) affects other aspects of the dot-com initiative. The BID can be also be used as an independent artefact to assist organisations through the structure of the business documents in the start-up process, even if the organisation is not following a specific framework. Hence the BID itself can assist entrepreneurs to start-up firm without the need to have an overarching framework. Last but not least, practical recommendations are offered to practitioners and stakeholders interested in developing new ventures within the dot-com domain.

For the winning variant a business plan was developed, including project schedule, analysis of financing, market and competition research, as well as pricing and marketing strategy. An important part of the plan was the financial plan, in which financial statements, such as balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement were created. Another significant part was the risk analysis and the evaluation of the project by quantitative financial indicators.

Abstract:
The role that quality management plays in business development cannot be overemphasized. Most of the products and services that we enjoy are results of good quality management efforts. Some of these efforts are so subtle that we take no note of them. When a product or service does not meet acceptable standards it is as a result of failure or shortcoming in the quality function. Companies that consistently deliver good product and services in a timely fashion succeeded mainly because of the efforts they commit to quality management. There is now a proliferation of high technology projects and advanced production endeavours in the world. The issue of quality must therefore follow a deliberate course of planning if any desirable result will be achieved. This research dissertation addressed the problem of managing the quality process of high technology development projects in the petrochemical industry. A systemized process was developed which led to a scientific control system. It described the methodology used, which permitted a free flow of operations and better control of concurrent activities. This facilitated the analysis of individual performances for better management control. The relative merits of performing duties concurrently were discussed. The problems associated with implementing standard operating procedures in quality management processes were addressed and where possible solutions proposed, which could be tested in a live setting. It is worth noting at this point that this research work provided a standard operating workflow through systemization for engineering track quality plan only. Other tracks do exist in the business development and integration models for high technology development projects.
Thesis (M.Ing. Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Clear Blue International (pty) Ltd (CBI) is a swimming pool construction company that is in need of a high performance swimming pool pump in order to offer a competitive tender for the construction of an intricate swimming pool at a prestigious resort. There is one supplier of this particular pump in South Africa and due to their sole distributorship and the pump's technical specifications, it is sold at a very expensive price. The result being that CBI can't offer a competitive tender by this means, instead they need to source the pump from another source at a lower price. It was decided to develop a project plan to facilitate the importation process, which is the outcome of this study. A thorough analysis of project management is conducted and incorporated into the importation process. The study takes into consideration the intricacy of the importation process and how this can be facilitated by project management that will lead to success for CBI. CBI recognises that in order to stand out in a highly competitive industry they need to re-invent themselves by new and innovative means in order to stand out from the rest. Project management has proven to be the means by which they can add value to their corporate image. This study provides a useful template that can be of benefit to other importers that wish to use project management and it can be adjusted accordingly to a particular commodity and importers requirements.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Clear Blue International (Edms) Bpk (CBI) is 'n swembad konstruksie-maatskappy.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In a stable economic environment and enabling macro economy, such as Namibia, a small and medium enterprise (SME) sector is vital for the growth and sustainability of the economy. Although several studies have been conducted on SMEs, to the best of the researcher's knowledge, no single study has been conducted with regard to SME development in Namibia with emphasis on the Khomas region. The aim of this study was to explore the progress made, during the last decade in minimising constraints faced by SMEs in key developmental areas, such as access to finance, sound management, business processes, marketing and strategic alliances. In order to adequately address these key developmental areas the research sought to address the following questions: What strategies should SMEs adopt in terms of management, finance, marketing and networking in order to ensure their future viability? What is the institutional capacity from the sample of 50 SMEs in the Khomas region? What are the likely capital and recurrent cost implications with respect to traders wanting to form alliances in the Khomas region? What potential problems are likely to emanate from the SMEs' venturing into the export processing enclave? The government of Namibia, in 1997, recognised the important role SMEs can play in the country's socio-economic development. A number of policy documents were issued to give clear definitions of small businesses and to stipulate government programmes intended to ensure that conditions are favourable and enabling for SMEs' growth in Namibia. This research study explores the impact of the process of development since the passing of the Government SME Policy in 1997. Furthermore, this research looked at policy documents on SMEs, national development plans (NDPs), millennium development goals (MDGs), other developmental goals and government policies relevant to SME development in Namibia. The analysis indicates that the majority (74%) of SMEs in the Khomas region are involved in general dealing, like footstalls, detergent makers and the service industry. According to the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI 1997: 29), lack of finance is widely regarded as one of the major obstacles to the development of more advanced small businesses. Most of the SMEs do not have sufficient funds to venture into capital intensive programmes like manufacturing activities. As a result, general dealing becomes a better option since it does not require large sums of money to start operating or to expand current operations. Financial institutions have stringent collateral requirements; therefore access to finance is regarded as a major limiting factor for SME growth in the Khomas region. The survey also concluded that most SME owners act as sole proprietors and try to perform all business operations by themselves. They usually fail to keep financial records, due to ignorance of its importance. As a result most SMEs do not know how much money they have used or profits made. This research investigated, concluded and made recommendations on the factors that have assisted or impeded SME development in Namibia, with emphasis in the Khomas region.

Full text
Abstract:

The market for protective pants is large. Still these pants have developed in a very slow pace comparing to, as an example, sportswear. The main material used for these pants, cotton, has some negative characteristics that could be avoided if a synthetic fabric was used instead, but this has so far not had any success. The purpose with this study has been to get a picture over the market for protective clothing and research the carriers attitude towards synthetic material. The requirements that a synthetic material must achieve, so that the costumer will buy these pants instead of a pair of conventional protective pants, has also been examined. The study is based on interviews on product developers and a survey of carriers to get an idea about the business. These answers have been used to form a plan of marketing and a list of requirements. The result shows that the new material must exceed the conventional material. The material should be named and marketed in a way that the product appears innovative and technological. It is important that the material is not associated with the negative image of synthetic materials. To address to a younger target group seems suitable since these people are probably more receptive for new innovations. The marketing should be focused on product and place. To reach the customers it is important to find and use new ways of distribution such as personal sales. Since the selection of protective clothes is today quite similar, a company that focuses on design and innovation could be able to reach great success.

The Intrapreneurship project, "Zuppa, it has never been easier to eat soup!" is intended to promote and evaluate the market launch of an innovative concept of soup "ready-to-eat," prepared with natural, organic and healthy ingredients, for consumption in local work. Inspired by a travel to Japan in 2009, where meals, properly packaged and wrapped, available in various outlets, were ready to eat with the simple addition of hot water that the shops themselves offered at the time, and the success of Nespresso machines, the idea came to Zuppa, "ready-to-eat" food whose ingredients, lyophilized and encapsulated, will be ready for consumption through a flow system, similar to the Nespresso coffee machine, which will turn them into soup. The Quick Fit Program is one way in which physical therapy practices can diversify the services they offer to keep pace with the changing landscape of healthcare. Clients in the Quick Fit Program would receive an assessment of basic health and fitness during their initial visit. After the assessments, a licensed physical therapist debriefs each client and offers recommendations or referral to a physician or gym program as appropriate. Staff in the Quick Fit Program would also schedule a follow-up appointment three to six months from the date of the initial visit to assess any changes or improvements in health and fitness measures since the initial visit.

Carvelas, Wray Anthony. "The development of a strategic business plan to grow the mining and minerals division of Kellogg Brown & Root into Sub-Saharan Africa." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/4906.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 1999.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Globally the mining and minerals market is experiencing a decline. With this decline, focus is turning to Africa as an unexplored mineral wealth. In terms of global exploration expenditure, Africa is said to be experiencing the highest percentage growth of any other regional budget. The Halliburton company is reputed to be the premier source for the engineering and construction of refineries, chemical plants, and pipelines along with office buildings, infrastructure systems, government facilities, and much more. The South African office has recently established a mining and minerals division, which has experienced certain measures of success, however, a failure of the division appears to be the total lack of a significant growth strategy. This has resulted in the division becoming a one-client business. The Sub-Saharan market is characterised by unique challenges, which require a strong culture aligned with its market environment, strategic choice and distinctive competencies to be successful in the market. The purpose of this study project is primarily to make a contribution to the formulation of strategic direction in order to obtain practical implementation guidelines given the unique opportunities and challenges presented in this market. The formulation of the strategy for the mining and minerals business unit is achieved firstly be analysing the Sub-Saharan market, the dominant economic traits, and conducting a full industry and competitive analysis. Secondly, organisation situation analysis of Kellogg Brown & Root is conducted in order to assess the competitive positioning of the firm and distinct capabilities that the firm possesses, and those necessary for success in the market. This will include conducting an analysis of the internal strengths and weaknesses, of the company, and the external opportunities and threats facing the company. From the analyses conducted, strategic challenges are identified and suggestions are made to address these challenges. A strategic intent is proposed together with a mission statement, and a strategic and financial statement of objectives is developed. These statements of intent are not intended to prescribe to the firm and it's employees what the strategic approach should be, but to form the basis of further discussions and research and should not give way to misleading and unwarranted interpretations. The strategy formulated is superimposed onto the corporate strategy and no major discordance is evident. From the analyses conducted and strategy formulation process, suggestions are made that could provide manageable guidelines for the final implementation of the strategic business plan for the minerals division.
