Macias, Lloret Mario. "Business-driven resource allocation and management for data centres in cloud computing markets." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/144562.

Abstract:
Cloud Computing markets arise as an efficient way to allocate resources for the execution of tasks and services within a set of geographically dispersed providers from different organisations. Client applications and service providers meet in a market and negotiate for the sales of services by means of the signature of a Service Level Agreement that contains the Quality of Service terms that the Cloud provider has to guarantee by managing properly its resources. Current implementations of Cloud markets suffer from a lack of information flow between the negotiating agents, which sell the resources, and the resource managers that allocate the resources to fulfil the agreed Quality of Service. This thesis establishes an intermediate layer between the market agents and the resource managers. In consequence, agents can perform accurate negotiations by considering the status of the resources in their negotiation models, and providers can manage their resources considering both the performance and the business objectives. This thesis defines a set of policies for the negotiation and enforcement of Service Level Agreements. Such policies deal with different Business-Level Objectives: maximisation of the revenue, classification of clients, trust and reputation maximisation, and risk minimisation. This thesis demonstrates the effectiveness of such policies by means of fine-grained simulations. A pricing model may be influenced by many parameters. The weight of such parameters within the final model is not always known, or it can change as the market environment evolves. This thesis models and evaluates how the providers can self-adapt to changing environments by means of genetic algorithms. Providers that rapidly adapt to changes in the environment achieve higher revenues than providers that do not. Policies are usually conceived for the short term: they model the behaviour of the system by considering the current status and the expected immediate after their application. This thesis defines and evaluates a trust and reputation system that enforces providers to consider the impact of their decisions in the long term. The trust and reputation system expels providers and clients with dishonest behaviour, and providers that consider the impact of their reputation in their actions improve on the achievement of their Business-Level Objectives. Finally, this thesis studies the risk as the effects of the uncertainty over the expected outcomes of cloud providers. The particularities of cloud appliances as a set of interconnected resources are studied, as well as how the risk is propagated through the linked nodes. Incorporating risk models helps providers differentiate Service Level Agreements according to their risk, take preventive actions in the focus of the risk, and pricing accordingly. Applying risk management raises the fulfilment rate of the Service-Level Agreements and increases the profit of the provider

Abstract:
Thesis (M.B.A.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2007.
This thesis is a part of an exploration of how the relationships between the customers of Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) shape customer experience, and can be used to diminish customer churn and improve customer life expectancy, two critical drivers for any subscription-based business model. MMOGs are a very complex product, with a massive level of interaction within the customer base - in fact those interactions constitute a significant part of the appeal. Thus, MMOGs combine aspects of particularly tough online community management, online customer service, and game design/content creation. To be successful, all of those elements need a fine understanding of the customer, their needs and their virtual 'life' and relationships within the game world. This thesis explores the usefulness of detailed, sophisticated interview to gain a fine understanding of customer needs and of the tools necessary to organize communication with, and among, customers. From this knowledge, it projects examples of strategic thrusts necessary to achieve or maintain leadership within this recent, but very powerful and lucrative, business model.

Enquist, Bo-Jacob. "Values drive value when creating sustainable service business : A study of a medium-sized values-driven company: Löfbergs Lila." Thesis, Karlstad University, Faculty of Economic Sciences, Communication and IT, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-1418.

Abstract:

This Master thesis investigates how values can drive value when creating sustainable business.Concepts like Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainable Development (SD) has in the last years become more and more accepted and therefore practiced in the business world. Due to alarms of the climate change, decreased biological diversity and alarming reports of child labour in the export industry, today’s society claims for more sustainable actions among global enterprises. Evidently, some organisations have a more proactive sustainable approach and therefore managed to use sustainable actions to grow and strengthen their market positions e.g. IKEA and Starbucks. Service research related to the above research area at CTF (Service Research Center) at Karlstad University pointed out that corporate values such as social responsibility and environmental responsibility (among others) can be used to create customer value, brand equity and help strategic decision-making for future growth. This thesis investigates in the specific context of Löfbergs Lila what can be learned if the above mentioned strategy is used in a medium-sized company with strong values. Which processes are required to create sustainable business and how far has Löfbergs Lila come according to selected concepts and theoretical framework in business research?

The purpose of the thesis is to investigate, in an explorative way, how values can drive value for sustainable business, both empirically through the Löfbergs in the coffee context as well as theoretically. The whole thesis can be seen as a mix of a descriptive case study and an interpretative case study where understanding of the thesis will be created in the interaction between the theoretical and empirical parts. The study has been developed using a combination of inductive and abductive methods whereby the interaction between the conceptual/theoretical framework and Löfbergs Lila, in the coffee context, have constructed a new meaning.

The explorative study of Löfbergs Lila (or AB Anders Löfberg) presents an understanding of how values have affected the strategy and operation of this organization and is still doing so to this very day. Every company can work with sustainability, but strong corporate values incorporated into the business model are an advantage. There is a fundamental basis for more “sustainable growth” when these values drive “true” environmental and social progress, including accountability. This thesis claims that true core values are deep-rooted in the company and drive value for Löfbergs’ customers in the name of sustainable business.

The theoretically- and conceptually-driven findings, built on five (re)-constructed thick descriptions from Löfbergs Lila in the coffee context, end up in five general concepts for valuesbased sustainable business

1. Service Logic

2. Values-based service

3. Values-based service quality for sustainable business

4. Managing Value chain responsibility

5. Creating the service experience

Abstract:
The current business environment is rapidly and fundamentally changing. The main driver are digital technologies. Companies face the pressure to exploit those technologies to improve their business processes in order to achieve competitive advantage. In the light of increased complexity of business processes and the existence of corporate Big Data stored in information systems, the discipline of process mining has emerged. Investigate how process mining can support the optimization of business processes. In this qualitative study, an illustrative case study research is utilized involving eight research participants. Hereby, data is primarily collected from semi-structured interviews. The data is analyzed using content analysis. In addition, the illustrative case serves the purpose to demonstrate the application of process mining. The research revealed that process mining has important impacts on current business process improvement. Not all of them were explicitly positive. The derived success factors should support vendors, current and potential users to apply process mining safe and successfully.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A demand exists in SMEs to implement an ERP system to provide intime transaction and management information to the employees and management respectively. The reason for this study developed from problems experienced in the past with ERP implementations. As a first step, a generic business model for project management in an SME was developed. This business model is based mainly on the PMBOK. Experienced project management consultants provided inputs for the business model. CAE accepted the business model after a few reviews. The business model was implemented in CAE and the employees trained to perform their daily tasks on Omuzik by using the processes suggested by the business model. The five main processes in the project management business model are Initiating, Planning, Executing, Controlling and Closing. The model is complete with inputs to the processes and the resulting outputs from them. The business model was implemented on Omuzik, and comments were included with every business process. Reports for project management were developed to provide in the information requirements of the project managers. The reports developed and deployed aim at providing detail and summary information to assist project managers in performing project control. The reports were developed and implemented and are currently used by the CAE project managers. The project management business model and reports fit into the bigger project for the complete enterprise with great success. The bigger project has completed the templates and is ready for the first fast implementation where the methodology will be tested.

Solvency II brought some challenging requirements for insurance companies concerning the amount and periodicity of the reported information. Hence, it is difficult for an insurer to comply with such requirements without mapping and organizing the flow of information regarding the process of Solvency II. With reference to this subject, the Portuguese insurance companies are no different. This report follows an internship at CA Seguros, a medium sized Portuguese insurance company. The main objective of this internship was to map and document the whole process of Information Management for quantitative reporting (Pillars 1 and 3) on Solvency II. Hence, the possibility of mapping a company?s Solvency II process with a business process model using Event-driven Process Chains is assessed. Following this line of thought, literature review on Solvency II, Business Process Management, Business Process Modeling and Event-driven Process Chains is presented. A methodology based on process documentation in line with the Business Process Modeling approach and the Event-driven Process Chains modeling technique was developed. Results show that the business process model was effective, providing a viable collection of documentation within the Event-driven Process Chains limitations.

Mulder, Sunette. "The role of emotional intelligence in the investment management industry : a case study of a South African investment manager." Thesis, Stellenbosch : University of Stellenbosch, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/990.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The investment management industry is a challenging, exciting and rewarding environment to be employed in. The financial markets and global economies that form the playground for this industry are continually changing and evolving. Firms place a high premium on the intellectual capabilities of their staff and the continued development of those capabilities. However, the perceived soft skills are very often overlooked within the recruitment and development process. The question arises, whether these soft skills have a place within such a highly performance driven environment and does the existence of above average cognitive ability imply the existence of above average emotional ability as measured by emotional intelligence? Adam Smith, who is widely regarded as the father of modern economic theory stated, “If you don’t know who you are, the market is an expensive place to find out”. The rationale of the study is to determine the individual and group emotional intelligence profile for the investment team of an investment manager and the role emotional intelligence plays within their daily operations. The resulting profile will enable the investment management firm to train and develop individual staff members and the group accordingly to improve performance. The result can also be used to build a profile of an ideal candidate that can be used in future recruitment. Data for the case study was collected from an investment management firm where 11 individuals out of the investment team volunteered to take part in the testing. The instrument used was the online BarOn EQ-i. The service of an accredited firm of consulting psychologists was used to conduct the testing. With the help of a trained EQ specialist, the writer compiled and interpreted the results. All results showed an average group composite EQ score below the target score put forward by the writer and EQ specialist and also below the South African standard score, with only a few individuals scoring on or above target for some of the subsections and components of EQ. This study concluded with recommendations to the firm for EQ development on the individual and group level. At an individual level the development should be constructed around the specific needs identified in the EQ results. At an organisational level the recommendations focused on creating organisational acceptance for the development initiative. The study also made proposals regarding future research.

Abstract:
An increased competitive climate has enhanced the importance for companies to differentiate from other companies. Today, the customer support within service organizations are often disregarded as a source of value due to the focus on costs. Further, it has become more important to leverage the contact with the customer at all encounters. New technological advancements within Business Intelligence have also enabled companies to increase their competitiveness through improved decision support. The objective of this thesis is through a case study investigate how an insurance company could leverage its customer support as a source of creating shareholder value as well as how to apply trends within Business Intelligence for increased decision support. This was done through developing a conceptual model based on academic theory in order to provide a tool for analysis and development of a customer support. The research questions intends to investigate how an customer support can contribute to, and balance a focus on service quality, costs and sales in order to enhance shareholder value. A business driven approach was further used in order to understand how a customer support could leverage the emerging trends of Business Intelligence. This since the thesis also aims to provide some first insights into how to leverage the trends of mobile- and Self-Service- Business Intelligence within the customer support within insurance companies. The research emphasizes the need to have a holistic view of what drives value and costs with regard to the retention, growth and acquisition of customers when viewing the customer support as a source of value. The thesis concludes that both the trends of mobile- and Self-Service- Business Intelligence could enable an insurance company to gain new insights through utilizing existing internal as well as external data in order to conduct a more continuous and flexible analysis of important matters.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The mass production economy of the major part of the twentieth century has undergone a fundamental change to a global, knowledge-based and entrepreneurial-driven economy, where products and services are now fuelled by innovation, technology and knowledge. Over the last few decades, globalisation has transformed the commercial and political world, and globalisation itself is now entering a more complex phase. Centers of economic activities have shifted profoundly, not only globally, but also regionally. Along with this shift, new rules have been established. Faced with the challenges of the new economy, organisations are forced to adapt to the changes with which they are confronted as customers, markets, societies, employees, competition and technology are all impacted. The new economy requires a different type of leader. Achieving high performance in an increasingly interdependent world will become a challenge facing organisations in both developed and emerging economies. The degree of connectivity between economies, business and individuals worldwide is probably the most important element of the new economy. Highly improbable, but also highly consequential types of events will become more frequent as turbulence increases. Implausible events become possible. Leaders with the ability to anticipate the probability of such occurrences will be the ones who will reap benefits by applying the dynamics pertaining to the new economy. Interest in leadership and the theories thereof gained momentum during the twentieth century. Even though many leadership theories developed over the last decades, the core of these theories changed little. However, the new economy brings new challenges and leaders must also adapt to the changing environment. Without effective leaders companies cannot succeed. It is therefore imperative that leaders understand the qualities of the environment as well as the attributes they need to be successful. Leaders who have the foresight to take advantage of the opportunities which the new economy offers them and who have mastered the ability to react with agility to these opportunities will have the competitive advantage needed for the future.

Abstract:
Recent developments and hype around artificial intelligence (AI) have arisen as result of two main factors: increase in computational power and data. Although marketing is considered as one of the main business applications within AI today, there is a lack of literature combining the disciplines. Marketing management tools, which utilise AI in supporting decision making are referred to as knowledge-driven marketing management support systems (MMSS). These systems provide besides quantitative analysis, further qualitative facets into marketing management. Despite the willingness of many SMEs to engage with the technology that may foster competitive advantage, many adoption processes fail. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the factors influencing adoption of knowledge-driven MMSS in SMEs in Finland and Sweden. Qualitative primary data was collected from nine company representatives at top management level in Finnish and Swedish firms. Companies were classified in three categories, providers, adopters and non-adopters of knowledge-driven MMSS.   The findings show that there are several factors influencing adoption of knowledge-driven MMSS. The factors were grouped into technological, organizational and environmental factors, based on the TOE framework. Even though SMEs suffer from a lack of resources compared to large companies, this research suggests that they are at the forefront of adopting AI for marketing purposes. Additionally, it was found that the factors affecting adoption are dependent on whether the knowledge-driven MMSS is built in-house or outsourced.   This study has contributed to the identified gaps in literature by combining the disciplines of AI, marketing and SMEs, and by exploring the factors behind adoption of knowledge-driven MMSS. The authors of this thesis have the aspiration that the developed post-empirical framework will serve as a guiding tool for top management and marketing managers in SMEs looking to adopt knowledge-driven MMSS into their organizations.

The uniqueness of this study is primarily in the application of a visual research methodology to generate knowledge and understanding in an area that is often associated with quantitative research. Careers and employment research typically focuses on statistical information which can provide general information but does not give an in-depth understanding of the area under study. Visual research can give an in-depth understanding; in addition to giving access to a different kind of knowledge, supported by Harper (2002) who proposes “that images can evoke deeper elements of human consciousness than words alone.” I explore the various ways in which students perceive and develop different career aspiration including what motivates and what might inhibit students’ development of their career aspirations. This understanding will enhance my professional practice and encourage the Careers and Employment department within the University to adapt their service and give students the relevant tools and information to prepare them for employment. A visual research methodology is utilised as this fits comfortably with my background in art and gives the in-depth knowledge I require for my research (see Clark-Ibáñez, 2004; Collier (1957); Collier and Collier, 1986; Cousin, 2009; Guillemin and Drew, 2010; Harper, 2002; Harris and Guillemin, 2012 and O’Brien, 2013 for further information on the benefits of using a visual research methodology). Auto-driven photo-elicitation (ADPE) is used with six fine art and six business management students. These students often have less career direction and tend to struggle to secure graduate level positions (Swani, 2016); in addition, the two subject areas were chosen because they are a contrast in terms of how their curriculum is delivered. Using visual research to inform careers and employment is unique and through sharing my research and research experience I want to initiate a shift in how careers and employment research is approached in the future. In addition to the uniqueness of using a visual research methodology in careers and employment my findings indicate there are five orientations business management and fine art students’ use when developing their career aspirations: a strong sense of direction, intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, weak planning and dreams. This research discusses the five orientations and the factors that might contribute to a rich learning environment for career building. Subject and professional identity are discussed in relation to identity formation and career building. Four main sources of identity formation are identified: identity through being (transition from study to profession), identity through self-discovery, identity through belonging (concerning the informal and cultural aspects of community life), and identity through peripheral participation (activities that are akin to peripheral participation in a professional community). This research establishes there is a relationship between the development and building of identity and self-efficacy through belonging, professional experience and working alongside mentors when developing strategies to develop career aspirations.

Abstract:
Change planning represents a key element for the operation and management of Information Technology infrastructures and services. Its scope ranges from the high level design of change requests and change plans (by an operator) to the generation, possibly automated, of detailed plans that, if executed, will perform the requested changes (e.g., modification of network device settings and deployment of new services). A fundamental problem - considering the limitations of existing refinement solutions - is that, although correct, these refined change plans can not necessarily be aligned with the purposes defined in the business level (eg, minimizing the downtime of a particular service). Another problem encountered in the IT change planning is the absence of models and algorithms to achieve the correct association of human to tasks. These correct association can impact in results more optimized (lower cost of deployment) and with higher quality (according to the skills/experience required for the activities and acquired by human resources). To overcome this problem, in this thesis we propose a solution for the alignment of change plans with business objectives/constraints using novel strategies for the human assignments to activities. The proposed solution is experimentally evaluated through a prototypical implementation of a decision support system called CHANGEADVISOR, which helps IT managers to understand the trade-offs between alternative change designs and to choose change plans more aligned to the business purposes.

Abstract:
Main focus of the thesis lies in the corporate management decision support deploying and using IT / ICT. Specific technology described is Business Activity Monitoring. The contribution of the work lies primarily in two planes. The first plane is to create as far as the most comprehensive view of the BAM. The findings are collected from different directions and areas. The first direction of research is focused on the development of Business Intelligence and description of BAM as a trend of BI, including the stages of development and projections into the future. The second direction focuses primarily on a detailed circumscribe of BAM. Its definition, deployment assumptions, basic models, the way how business can benefit from BAM usage. The third guideline shows the classification of BAM surrounded by the other / similar technologies and business solutions -- BI and BSM, and the search key differences. The second level of the work is to support the AML implementation in a specific environment of banks using BAM. This is a practical demonstration of the possibility of using BAM in practice. Basic design solution lies in the analysis of risks arising from the law and the current state of the solution. By mapping of banking processes and searching for points of risk it is then possible to deploy these risks BAM tools for their management. Motion of support lies mainly in conceptual terms.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This dissertation joins an ongoing discussion in the business management and information technology literature surrounding the measurement of an organization’s business analytic capability, the benefits derived from maturing the capability and the improvements being made toward maturity. The dissertation specifically focuses on the healthcare industry in the United States and more specifically independent physician practices specializing in orthopaedics. After an extensive literature review along with expertise from industry leaders and experienced academic faculty, a survey instrument was developed to measure organizational capabilities, technology capabilities and people capabilities which together measured an organizations overall business analytic capability maturity. The survey instrument was delivered to 89 C-suite executives in the target population. A response rate of 36% was achieved resulting in a total of 32 completed responses. The research study provides evidence that improving an organization’s business analytic capability leads to an improvement in the use of analytics to drive business performance. The research study also explored whether or not the use of analytics would improve business outcomes. The results were inconclusive. This could be due to the lag time between the use of analytics and business performance. In addition, the study did not have access to actual outcome data but rather asked the CEO’s whether or not performance in several areas had improved, remained stable or had declined. This measure may not have been precise enough to provide the predictive value needed. As such, this is an area that should be explored further. Finally, the research shows that over the past two years, physician practices have been focused on and successful in improving their business analytic capabilities. Despite these improvements, opportunities exist for physician practices to further their maturity, particularly in the areas of technology capabilities and people capabilities.

Abstract:
The world is undergoing change and the disintegration of the old economy is becoming evident. Production is moving to low cost countries and competition is growing fierce. In order to stay competitive, companies around the world recognises the need to become more innovative. In order to achieve this it is imperative to balance and compliment the linear business thinking that still rule the managerial body. Leading research in this area suggest that the key to innovation in business development lies within the creative thinking of the design field. This paper describes a joint master degree project that seeks to test these theories and develop methods and protocols to put them into practice. So the question is, what happens when one use industrial  design as a tool to innovate business in the Creative Economy? The research group consists of four industrial designers from Konstfack, University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm and four marketing students from School of Business, Stockholm University. During the project we applied action research and introspection in a case study where new business strategies where formulated for a live company as our empirical base. The process proved more difficult but also more rewarding than initially anticipated and resulted in several new potential strategies for the company while providing valuable insight and experience in interdisciplinary team work in this field. This paper presents suggestions to how design thinking and business thinking can be combined in the process of developing business strategies and accentuates some of the skills and qualities that inherently drive this process. The collaboration investigates the synergy between designers and business managers and illustrates the potential in combining these competences to find new ways to create, re-define and develop businesses in the creative economy.

Algera, Puck Marloes. "Between utopia and reality: An exploration of Radical Corporate Responsibility in values-driven businesses." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Department of Management, Marketing and Entrepreneurship, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/9028.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the growing consensus on the importance of an extended responsibility for business, both the conceptual and practical understanding of “corporate responsibility” has remained limited. Corporate responsibility is still often understood as an add-on to business-as-usual or as a strategy to enhance business performance. In fact, in recent years, the concept of corporate responsibility has become associated with corporate deceit instead of corporate contributions to society, and tends to engender cynicism rather than a sense of hope. In this study I sought to explore a more hopeful and more “radical” conceptualisation of corporate responsibility. By looking at an international sample of “exemplary” values-driven businesses, this study provides insight into corporate responsibility not primarily as a means towards commercial ends but as an expression of a desire to “do good” and create social and/or environmental value. This study paints a picture of the rich, responsible reality of values-driven businesses. It describes their generous, human-centred approach to employees and the internal environment. It explores their deep sense of interdependence with the wider community in which they find themselves, and their extensive engagement with a wide variety of external parties, many of which are not “naturally” connected to business. It creates an understanding of the iterative, emerging and evolutionary nature of the CSR implementation process and the inherent impermanence of CSR “solutions”. While this study gives a comprehensive insight into various, generous and progressive practices, it shows that the essence of a “responsible existence” is not the implementation of certain practices alone, but relates to the willingness and ability to continuously question the established ways and practices of business in light of the higher business aspirations, which, for many, leads to a fundamentally different way of organising, managing and governing the business. At the same time, this study does not provide a glorified account of some kind of “utopian” responsible existence. Instead, it shows the “messy” reality of trying to implement social and environmental values, while faced with multiple demands and when embedded within a social and business context that does not necessarily hold the same values. The thesis describes the various conflicts and compromises related to the implementation of multiple, conflicting commitments and demands, and the different ways in which the sample businesses approach such situations. While the sample businesses are quite capable of gracefully navigating these conflicts in creative and pragmatic ways, the research also indicates that significant compromises are seemingly inevitable, and can, almost imperceptibly, move a company away from its envisaged values and commitments. Finally, this study argues that the currently dominant approach to corporate responsibility in organisational studies, which reflects a rationalised and economic perspective on CSR and business, will be insufficient to describe the rich reality found within these businesses, as it will edit out some of its most essential elements. I conclude this dissertation by proposing an alternative, human existential lens through which corporate responsibility in values-driven businesses can be understood. Through a review of the research findings in relation to three existential themes, I show that a human existential perspective is better suited to explore both the beauty and the struggle of values-driven businesses.

Abstract:

The globalisation of economy, increase of employees’ mobility, the forthcoming shortage of people next 10 years and, hence, war for talented people are some of the most important problems of corporations today. This thesis has a purpose to show systematic picture of the organisation, which will be named as Talented Organisation, with appropriate conditions for having talented people within and developing their talents.

Some assumption of the research discussed in this paper are about the talented people themselves as special, difficult to work with, but interesting for any organisation. They can create some problems for leadership and co-workers and at the same time represent the most important source of ideas and to be essential resource.

It will be described the strategy for gaining the Talented Organisation which will facilitate the process of hiring talented people as well as will promote the utilisation of inner organisational potential: identifying, breeding, nurturing and retaining of talented people.

Abstract:
The world’s data sets are growing exponentially every day due to the large number of devices generating data residue across the multitude of global data centers. What to do with the massive data stores, how to manage them and defining who are performing these tasks has not been adequately defined and agreed upon by academics and practitioners. Data science is a cross disciplinary, amalgam of skills, techniques and tools which allow business organizations to identify trends and build assumptions which lead to key decisions. It is in an evolutionary state as new technologies with capabilities are still being developed and deployed. The data science tasks and the data scientist skills needed in order to be successful with the analytics across the data stores are defined in this document. The research conducted across twenty-two academic articles, one book, eleven interviews and seventy-eight surveys are combined to articulate the convergence on the terms data science. In addition, the research identified that there are five key skill categories (themes) which have fifty-five competencies that are used globally by data scientists to successfully perform the art and science activities of data science. Unspecified portions of statistics, technology programming, development of models and calculations are combined to determine outcomes which lead global organizations to make strategic decisions every day. This research is intended to provide a constructive summary about the topics data science and data scientist in order to spark the dialogue for us to formally finalize the definitions and ultimately change the world by establishing set guidelines on how data science is performed and measured.

Abstract:
There is an increasing pressure on service firms to innovate and compete on new offerings. As our lives become more digitized through the ubiquitous connectivity by the usage of digital devices, companies are now able to collect vast amount of various data in real-time, and thus, know radically more about their customers. Companies could leverage on this growing body of data and developing relevant services based on customer demands accordingly. One industry compelled to benefit by utilizing customer information is the telecom industry due to fierce competition and a need of innovation in a saturated market. Hence, the purpose of this study is to investigate how telecom companies use customer information in their development process of new services by answering the research question: How do telecom companies use customer information within their New Service Development process? To illuminate this, a qualitative research was conducted on three Swedish telecom companies. The findings indicate that telecom companies possess a beneficial position since they are able to collect a vast amount of data about their customers due to the digital nature of their services. However, they struggle to efficiently integrate the data and seamlessly disseminate the obtained knowledge internally. Hence, leveraging customer information in new service development has not reached its full potential and how well it is incorporated is determined by the skills of key employees and their collaboration rather than deployed internal processes.

Abstract:
Organizations increasingly empower their employees to conduct local experimentation and generate innovation ideas. The aim of this dissertation is to understand the role of management control mechanisms in motivating and managing employee-driven innovation. Specifically, I provide empirical evidence – both quantitative and qualitative – on the specific channels and mechanisms through which employee-driven innovation is facilitated within real-world settings. In the first chapter of my dissertation, I conduct a field study in a gaming company to examine how innovation ideas are generated and selected. I provide details on the various channels through which employee-driven innovation occurs, as well as the management control mechanisms used to manage employee-driven innovation. The rich descriptive evidence enabled me to uncover important themes in the management control mechanisms that balance innovation and execution. The second chapter is based on my job market paper (“Boss, Cut Me Some Slack: Control and Innovation in a Multitasking Environment”) which examines the problem of motivating innovation in the presence of existing execution tasks. Using employee- and project-level data from a software company, I examine the relationship between reduced time pressure on execution tasks and employee-level innovation by exploiting variations in the extent to which predetermined time constraints on execution tasks were loosely enforced by managers in decentralized teams. I find that reduced time pressure on execution tasks is significantly associated with a greater probability of self-initiated innovation. Consistent with theories on employee selection and relational contract, the above effect is more pronounced (1) for employees without significantly negative outcomes on past execution tasks, (2) for employees with a greater preexisting propensity to innovate, or (3) when the supervisor has a history of working with innovating employees. Conditional on submitting innovation prototypes, reduced time pressure on execution tasks is also significantly associated with higher-quality innovation. Despite the formal permission to innovate, many employees in established organizations seem unable to fully and effectively use the granted discretion to experiment. In the third chapter of my dissertation, I turn my attention to whether certain informal control mechanisms (such as social norms) affect the extent of local experimentation. Using detailed loan- and employee-level data from a financial institution that removed its rule-based formal control system, I analyze changes in decision-making patterns and find that employees who are exposed to two different initial control environments (i.e. before and after removing the rule-based control system) have both increased local experimentation over time after being given the right to make their own decisions. But employees from the initial control environment with zero-experimentation rely much more on managers’ or peers’ degree of experimentation to guide their own experimentation.

Abstract:
In the present context, Information and Communication technologies are recognized as an inevitable element to improve business practices. Particularly in the home-care field in order to meet challenges of coordination and care continuity. However, these organizations operate in a highly dynamic and uncertain environment. In view of these endogenous and exogenous disruptions, they have to react in an agile way to face risks and to ensure their resilience. The Business Continuity Management (BCM) meets these expectations. Our motivation in this research work is to define a methodological framework to implement the business continuity management within a socio -technical system as an integral part of a new approach to model driven enterprise engineering. After delivering a synthesis of related work to Business Continuity Management, a research question concerning the structuring of this knowledge has been addressed. A methodological framework for business continuity management is then suggested. It is based on (i) the definition and the design of a meta-model integrating BCM and enterprise engineering, (ii) the development of a set criticality assessment matrix to support the business impact analysis, and finally on (iii) the definition of a modeling language adapted to concepts of BCM. A case study from the home-care sector illustrates the foundation of the methodological framework

Abstract:
Cloud services are now widely used, especially in Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), with big players offering several purchasing options, and expanding almost daily the range of offered services. Cost reduction is a major factor promoting cloud services adoption. However, qualitative factors need to be evaluated as well, making the decision process of cloud services adoption a non-trivial task for managers. In this work, we propose a Petri net-based multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) framework, in order to evaluate a cloud service in relation to a similar on-premises offer. The evaluation of both options considers cost and qualitative issues in a novel and simple method that incorporates best practices from academy and IT specialists. Furthermore, the use of Petri net models allows powerful extensions to perform deeper analysis of specific factors as needed. The framework can be helpful for IT managers to decide between the two options, and can be used for any type of cloud service (IaaS, SaaS, PaaS). Since cost is one of the most important factors promoting cloud adoption, we proceed with a deeper analysis of one important cost factor. We propose a Petri net to model cost savings using public clouds spot Instances purchasing option. Through extensive simulations in several scenarios we conclude that spot Instances can be a very interesting option for savings in auto scaling process, even in simple business applications using only a few servers. Exploring different purchasing options for cloud services can make the difference in the decision making process.

Abstract:
Shorter product life cycles and rapid product obsolescence provide increasing incentives to introduce newproducts to markets more quickly. As a consequence of rapidly changing market conditions, firms focus onimproving their new product development processes to reap the benefits of early market entry. Researchershave analyzed market entry, but have seldom provided quantitative approaches for the product rolloverproblem. This research builds upon the literature by using established optimization methods to examine howfirms can minimize their net loss during the rollover process. Specifically, our work explicitly optimizes thetiming of removal of old products and introduction of new products, the optimal strategy, and the magnitudeof net losses when the market entry approval date of a new product is unknown. In the first paper, we use theconditional value at risk to optimize the net loss and investigate the effect of risk perception of the manageron the rollover process. We compare it to the minimization of the classical expected net loss. We deriveconditions for optimality and unique closed-form solutions for single and dual rollover cases. In the secondpaper, we investigate the rollover problem, but for a time-dependent demand rate for the second producttrying to approximate the Bass Model. Finally, in the third paper, we apply the data-driven optimizationapproach to the product rollover problem where the probability distribution of the approval date is unknown. We rather have historical observations of approval dates. We develop the optimal times of rollover and showthe superiority of the data-driven method over the conditional value at risk in case where it is difficult to guessthe real probability distribution

Abstract:
This diploma thesis deals with an information technology support of organization's decision making processes using Exact Software's enterprise information systems. The main goal of this paper is a demonstration of various Exact Software applications using real world examples from several Czech enterprises. Illustration of various benefits of integrated enterprise systems architecture is another goal of this paper. Possible benefits gained during the process of implementation of Exact Software's applications and necessary requirements that have to be fulfilled create the last goal. Risks and issues that can be encountered during the implementation process are mentioned along with benefits. To achieve these goals this diploma paper contains a lot of practical illustrations supplemented by theoretic explanation. Paper includes four parts. First part is an introduction into decision making processes in enterprises and provides a general overview of Exact Software's enterprise information systems portfolio. Another area covered by the first part is an overview of possible benefits of these systems in according to the level of organization management. Second part is dedicated to Exact Synergy Enterprise. At the beginning of this part there are outlined procedures, benefits and assumptions necessary for successful system implementation. The following text in part two contains many real world examples from the decision making point of view. Third part covers Business Intelligence application Exact Business Analytics from the standpoint of implementation guidelines, prerequisites and benefits. Subsequent subchapters contain practical examples of usage of this system. The last part is comprised from two case studies of Exact Software's systems implementation -- first one is a financial counseling company, second one is a company from the IS/ICT area. The paper as a whole represents unique material for companies that are looking for solutions on their decision making and analytical procedures problems. On the basis of this paper the reader can create an overview of current capabilities of enterprise information systems. A vast majority of presented solutions are system independent i.e. the usage of systems from Exact Software is only exemplary. Case studies of complex enterprise IS architectures in real world enterprises represents another great contribution to this diploma paper.

Abstract:
Business Intelligence (BI) is the set of techniques and technologies that support the decision-making process by providing an aggregated insight on data in the organization. Due to the numerous potentially useful data hold by the events and applications running in the organization, the BI market calls for new technologies able to suitably exploit it for analysis wherever it is available. In particular, the Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) processes, the fundamental BI technology responsible for integrating and cleansing organization data, must respond to these requirements.

However, the development of ETL processes is still considered to be very complex and time-consuming, to such a point that roughly 80% of the BI project effort is dedicated to the ETL development. Among the phases of ETL development life cycle, ETL modeling is a critical and laborious task. Actually, this phase produces

the first effective formal representation of the ETL process, i.e. ETL model, that is completely reused and refined in the subsequent phases of the development.

Typically, the ETL processes are modeled using vendor-specific ETL tools from the very beginning of development. However, these tools are unsuitable for business users since they induce overwhelming fine-grained models.

As an attempt to provide more appropriate tools to business users, vendor-independent ETL modeling languages have been proposed in the literature. Nevertheless, they still remain immature. In order to get a precise view on these languages, we conduct a survey which: i) defines a set of criteria associated to major ETL

requirements identified in the literature; ii) compares the surveyed conceptual languages, issued from research work, to the physical languages, issued from prominent ETL tools; and iii) studies the whole methodologies of ETL development associated

to these modeling languages.

The analysis of our survey reveals several drawbacks in responding to the ETL requirements. Particularly, the conceptual languages have incomplete elements for ETL modeling with few or no formalization. Several languages are only descriptive with no ability to be automatically implemented into executable code, nor are they able to be automatically maintained according to changes over time.

To address these shortcomings, we present, in this thesis, a novel approach that tackles the whole development life cycle of ETL processes.

First, we propose a new vendor-independent language aiming at modeling ETL processes similar to typical business processes, the processes responsible for managing the operations in an organization. The rational behind this proposal is to provide ETL processes with better access to data in events and applications of the organization, including fresh data, and better design capabilities such as available analysis for any users. By using the standard representation mechanism denoted BPMN (Business Process Modeling and Notation) and a classification of ETL elements resulting from a study of the most used commercial and open source ETL tools, the language enables building agile and full-edged ETL processes. We name our language BPMN4ETL to refer to BPMN for ETL processes.

Second, we build a model-driven framework that provides automatic code generation capability and ameliorates maintenance support of our ETL language. We use the Model-Driven Development (MDD) technology as it helps in developing software, particularly in automating the transformation from one phase of the software development to another. We present a set of model-to-text transformations able to produce code for different business process engines and ETL engines. Also, we depict the model-to-model transformations that automatically update the ETL models with the aim of supporting the maintenance of the generated code according to data source evolution. A demonstration using a case study is conducted as an initial validation to show that the framework covering modeling, implementation and maintenance could be used in practice.

To illustrate new concepts introduced in the thesis, mainly the BPMN4ETL language, and the implementation and maintenance framework, we use a case study from the fictitious Northwind Traders company, a retailer company that imports and exports foods from around the world.

Full text
Abstract:

The importance of effective retail operations management has never been more significant. Our research aims to expand the understanding for efficiency and dynamics of franchise outlets within retail networks with a focus on sales performance and profitability. The focus and contribution is the development of an actionable data analytics driven process by which automotive dealerships (retail outlets) can be analyzed to identify areas of opportunity for improvement. In general, automotive dealerships aim to sell product to make a profit, the manufacturer of the product/brand desires to sell vehicles to make a profit, and the customer desires to find a suitable transportation option that provides most utility. While substantial volumes of quantitative data exists about the details of operations and automotive dealership transactions, similar Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are typically generated and reviewed in making decisions about operational change. We will focus on the actions (inputs) that relate to outcomes (outputs) at the dealership level, including factors relating to all three stakeholders and their interactions, which are anticipated to be relevant. Input variables and factors relating to the business outcomes of the stakeholders involved will be the desired target for finding synergies.

To address these concerns, we first developed an analytical process for providing recommendations to improve dealership efficiency and performance through quantitative data and demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed process using a real-world dealership case study. With a desire to go beyond available datasets, there is a need to dig deeper into operations through aligning quantitative Key Performance Outcomes (KPOs) with qualitative survey analysis of dealership operators. This provides a detailed view of analysis not previously available, which should encourage dealerships to make change. Through the utilization of an interview process, with a focus on variance between dealerships, in creating a survey distributed to dealership management, an assessment of principal factors has been created. The assessment of these factors will help dealerships and manufacturers understand which activities, perceptions, and atmospheres have the greatest positive impact on new vehicle sales and profitability.

Abstract:
A company must be able to describe and to remain responsive against endogenous or exogenous events. Such flexibility can be obtained with the Business Process Management (BPM). Through a BPM approach, different transformations operate on process models, developed by the business analyst and IT expert. A non-alignment is created between these heterogeneous models during their manipulation: this is the "business-IT gap" as described in the literature. The objective of our work is to propose a methodological framework for a better management of business processes in order to reach a systematic alignment from their modelling to their implementation within the target system. Using concepts from Model-driven Enterprise and Information System engineering, we define a generic approach ensuring an intermodal consistency. Its role is to maintain and provide all information related to the model structure and semantics. By allowing a full restitution of a transformed model, in the sense of reverse engineering, our platform enables synchronization between analysis model and implementation model. The manuscript also presents the possible match between process engineering and BPM through a multi- erspective scale

Abstract:
The business climate is undergoing a transformation and managers are faced with several challenges, not the least of which is related to pricing strategy. With an increased transparency in the market as well as anincreased competitive pressure, and with more sophisticated and well-informed consumers, retail businesses find it hard to navigate the pricing jungle. At the same time, the conventional wisdom in the field of pricing and the theoretical models on the topic, originate from a time long before the digitalization. Old models are not a problem in itself, but when there are new forces in the pricing ecosystem, driven by technological advancement, an assessment of the incumbent models is in the best interest of both businesses and academia. The reason for this is that, the use of old models that rely on inaccurate assumptions may impact businesses’ prioritizing of resources or their overall business strategy. In addition, researchers might be distracted and the research field disrupted. Thus, the purpose of this study is to discuss whether or not there are additional dimensions in pricing strategy that are not covered by the incumbent pricing models. Here, dimensions refer to the key components of businesses’ strategic decision making in regards to pricing. This thesis examines pricing models in today’s business context in order to answer the research question: “Are there additional dimensions of the empirical reality of pricing strategy that are not covered by the incumbent pricing models?” The research question has been studied qualitatively through a literature review, a pilot study and twelve case studies, where the pilot study had the purpose of exploring the depth, whereas the multiple case studies focused on the breadth, of pricing strategies. The case studies cover businesses in different retail industries and of different sizes, namely the industries of Clothing & Accessories, Daily Goods, Furniture and Toys & Tools, and of the following sizes: micro, small, medium and large. The empirical data has mainly been gathered by conducting interviews with production, sales and management personnel at the case businesses. The data has been structured, reduced and analysed with the help of a framework of analysis that has been developed throughout the pilot study. The results of this study lean on previous research and a main divider in pricing strategies has been identified as businesses use either a data-driven or an intuition-driven approach in their strategic work with pricing. As such, it is proposed that the division of pricing strategies need to be acknowledged, since the separate methodological approaches may lead to different results, while implying different costs, resources and required knowledge. Furthermore, the division may form a basis for competitive advantage, be extended to other areas of strategic management and become clearer, since the adoption of technology and its impact will increase in the future. As a result, in the future of pricing, they key is going to be to account for both the strategic perspectives and the methodological approaches in the strategic decision making process of pricing.

Abstract:
The thesis examines Engineering Design and its methodology in general before examining and comparing the principal differences between Inventive Design and Development Design.  This latter branch of design is described in detail, recognising that it is executed in accordance with recognised specifications, design codes and standards.  Design Codes and Standards are analysed in terms of the service they provide to the professional design engineer who will normally work under the procedures and accepted standards of a Professional Design House.  Professional design is an important part of all disciplines in the engineering profession.  Such design work is executed by specialists, invariably guided in their work by recognised Specifications, Design Standards or Codes of Practice published by recognised reputable bodies who appoint working parties or independent committees to write and maintain these documents. Design Standards and Codes of Practice are at best unclear and at worst confusing if not down right contradictory within themselves. Usually there is more than one such Standard or Code available to the professional design engineer often based on geographical location; BSI in the UK, DIN or ISO in Europe and perhaps ASME ANSI in the USA. There are of course several others. The professional design process is analysed and described in order to demonstrate the commercial and project constraints associated with professional development design.  The model usually adopted in the preparation and presentation of these codes and standards is critiqued and a better model proposed for standard adoption.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2006.
A value-centered, mission-driven strategic framework has been developed for Christian nonprofit (NFP) organisations operating in the developing nations. This framework contains many of the same elements that are used by businesses to develop strategy. The various strategy elements used within the new framework have, where necessary, been adapted to accommodate the dynamics of a Christian NFP operating in the developing nations. The core values of the organisation have been placed at the centre of the process and the mission is what drives the process forward. It is important that the plans and goals developed are aligned with the mission and do not violate the core values. The Christian NFP operating in developing nations faces several challenges with regards to adopting and implementing a strategic management process of which some are restraints and some have to do with the way they view the strategic management process. Some of the restraints faced by them include the lack of clear measurements; a focus on resources instead of results; the lack of accurate, relevant information; strategic convergence and the nature of the competitive environment. The more challenging the environment and circumstances within which the organisation operates, the more important it becomes for a strategic management process. Furthermore Christians often view the strategic management process as a secular intrusion into a spiritual process. The value-centered, mission-driven framework goes some way in addressing these constraints. This research report provides a strategic framework, based on a theoretical approach. It therefore focuses more on the justification and the elements of the process than on guidelines to implement it. It does not address aspects outside of the framework that could hamper the successful implementation of the process. The importance of the spiritual dimension is ignored. The research's exclusive focus on Christian organisations and developing nations provides opportunity for further research. The research reflected in this study is interesting and useful. It adds to the body of knowledge and reveals that more work can be done to assist those in their mission to bring about social change where it is most needed.

Abstract:

The worldwide software project failure rate, based on a survey of information technology software manager's view of user satisfaction, product quality, and staff productivity, is estimated to be between 24% and 36% and software project success has not kept pace with the advances in hardware. The problem addressed by this study was the limited information about software managers' experiences with data-driven decision making (DDD) in agile software organizations as a tool to improve software development productivity. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore how agile software managers view DDD as a tool to improve software development productivity and to understand how agile software development organizations may use DDD now and in the future to improve software development productivity. Research questions asked about software managers', project managers', and agile coaches' lived experiences with DDD via a set of interview questions. The conceptual framework for the research was based on the 3 critical dimensions of software organization productivity improvement: people, process, and tools, which were defined by the Software Engineering Institute's Capability Maturity Model Integrated published in 2010. Organizations focus on processes to align the people, procedures and methods, and tools and equipment to improve productivity. Positive social change could result from a better understanding of DDD in an agile software development environment; this increased understanding of DDD could enable organizations to create more products, offer more jobs, and better compete in a global economy.

Abstract:
In 2012, there was a 70% increase in online travel booking, resulting in small traditional brick-and-mortar travel agencies having serious difficulties with obtaining and retaining customers. The purpose of this case study was to explore online marketing strategies that leaders of small traditional travel agencies have used to successfully obtain and retain customers. Technology disruption theory was the conceptual framework of this study. Using criterion sampling, the population for this study consisted of 3 leaders of small traditional travel agencies located in the state of Maryland. Data collection consisted of interviews, observations, and review of documentation, such as displays, websites, business cards, and email campaigns. Data were analyzed using methodological triangulation through inductive coding of phrases and words. The following 4 themes emerged: company threats, online marketing strategies, various marketing strategies for improvement, and ways to compete with Internet-based travel agencies. Results indicated that 66% of participants believed that Internet-based travel agencies were threats. All of the participants used a form of online marketing and believed that customer loyalty helped to compete with Internet-based travel agencies. Positive social change may result when leaders of small traditional travel agencies increase their knowledge of online marketing strategies to obtain and retain customers, thereby leading to greater access to online travel opportunities for all, including physically challenged individuals often confined to their living areas.

Abstract:
The Internet has made it possible for large amounts of data to be made available to users in a variety of areas. This has to lead to users being inundated with lots of information, making it difficult for them to locate data that would be of use to them. One domain that has not been immune to this problem is that of remote sensing. Remotely sensed data is available in abundance and can potentially be of use to many users. But it is difficult for users from different application domains to locate appropriate datasets and process them. Current search tools such as search engines are not adequate for remotely sensed data as most searches using these tools yield an inordinately large number of web sites, each of which has to be explored individually by the user and then the results manually collated. Besides, traditional search techniques are not embedded with the knowledge about the remote sensing domain. The goal of this research is to find out how users with varying backgrounds and levels of expertise can retrieve and access resources over the Internet. This dissertation describes a virtual enterprise model of intelligent agents that deals with the complexities of locating and retrieving remotely sensed data over the Internet. The methodology followed in this research includes (i) agent modeling, (ii) building agent cooperation techniques that would enable agents to understand terminology used at different sites and communicate with each other, (iii) optimizing communication flows between various agents, (iv) validating the model, and (v) verifying the prototype. The important contributions of this research include among others an agent model generalizable to problem domains other than remote sensing, a formally defined ontology (a collection of terms and relationships between those terms) for the remote sensing domain, and a prototype system that implements the model and the ontology.

Abstract:
Terrorist attacks can cause massive casualties and severe property damage, resulting in terrorism crises surging across the world; accordingly, counter-terrorism analytics that take advantage of big data have been attracting increasing attention. The knowledge and clues essential for analyzing terrorist activities are often spread across heterogeneous data sources, which calls for an effective data integration solution. In this study, employing the goal definition template in the Goal-Question-Metric approach, we design and implement an automated goal-driven data integration framework for counter-terrorism analytics. The proposed design elicits and ontologizes an input user goal of counter-terrorism analytics; recognizes goal-relevant datasets; and addresses semantic heterogeneity in the recognized datasets. Our proposed design, following the design science methodology, presents a theoretical framing for on-demand data integration designs that can accommodate diverse and dynamic user goals of counter-terrorism analytics and output integrated data tailored to these goals.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this study is to develop an effective people management strategy that will enable manufacturing-based organisations to transform into demand-driven leaders. An effective people management strategy enables transforming organisations to position intellectual capital at the heart of organisational strategy in order to create a competitive advantage and long-term sustain ability. This study provides a step-by-step design blueprint for developing a generic people management strategy, while illustrating the contextual application thereof within the transformational journey of an organisation called Tiger Food Brands. This step-by-step approach involves an examination of the case for change within organisations in order to develop a people strategy that drives the desired future state of the organisation around key people factors. A well-designed people strategy then creates the strategic framework for repositioning the role of the Human Resources (HR) function, as well as for developing a comprehensive HR workplan that maps the appropriate HR outputs, drivers, measures and structures required to deliver the people strategy. The design of the people management strategy culminates in the development of HR interventions to support the strategic HR workplan of Tiger Food Brands. The design of an effective people management strategy is a holistic, integrated and sequential process that establishes the strategic role of people in an organisation while enabling the HR function to deliver as a strategic business partner.

Abstract:

Organizations seek legitimacy by copying the structure and operational models of similar organizations accepted as legitimate by society. This phenomenon is institutional isomorphism. Institutional isomorphism exists in Protestant congregations in the United States as evidenced by congregations holding to practices and structures identified by denominational bodies and society as legitimate. Leaders of some Protestant denominational congregations in the United States have decided to change their ministry model to the ministry model of another denomination's congregation. Congregations change to these ministry models and self-identify with the congregation with which the model originated. The practice of denominational congregations changing to the ministry model of another denomination is contrary to the theories of institutional isomorphism, which would expect congregations to hold to historically legitimizing denominational practices and structures. This study explored the case of a Protestant congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), located in the United States, which changed to the Purpose Driven ministry model. The case explored the question: "Why did the leaders of Trinity Presbyterian Church decide to change to the Purpose Driven ministry model?"

Welcker, Laura Joana Maria. "The impact of domain knowledge-driven variable derivation on classifier performance for corporate data mining." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/5009.

Full text
Abstract:
The technological progress in terms of increasing computational power and growing virtual space to collect data offers great potential for businesses to benefit from data mining applications. Data mining can create a competitive advantage for corporations by discovering business relevant information, such as patterns, relationships, and rules. The role of the human user within the data mining process is crucial, which is why the research area of domain knowledge becomes increasingly important. This thesis investigates the impact of domain knowledge-driven variable derivation on classifier performance for corporate data mining. Domain knowledge is defined as methodological, data and business know-how. The thesis investigates the topic from a new perspective by shifting the focus from a one-sided approach, namely a purely analytic or purely theoretical approach towards a target group-oriented (researcher and practitioner) approach which puts the methodological aspect by means of a scientific guideline in the centre of the research. In order to ensure feasibility and practical relevance of the guideline, it is adapted and applied to the requirements of a practical business case. Thus, the thesis examines the topic from both perspectives, a theoretical and practical perspective. Therewith, it overcomes the limitation of a one-sided approach which mostly lacks practical relevance or generalisability of the results. The primary objective of this thesis is to provide a scientific guideline which should enable both practitioners and researchers to move forward the domain knowledge-driven research for variable derivation on a corporate basis. In the theoretical part, a broad overview of the main aspects which are necessary to undertake the research are given, such as the concept of domain knowledge, the data mining task of classification, variable derivation as a subtask of data preparation, and evaluation techniques. This part of the thesis refers to the methodological aspect of domain knowledge. In the practical part, a research design is developed for testing six hypotheses related to domain knowledge-driven variable derivation. The major contribution of the empirical study is concerned with testing the impact of domain knowledge on a real business data set compared to the impact of a standard and randomly derived data set. The business application of the research is a binary classification problem in the domain of an insurance business, which deals with the prediction of damages in legal expenses insurances. Domain knowledge is expressed through deriving the corporate variables by means of the business and data-driven constructive induction strategy. Six variable derivation steps are investigated: normalisation, instance relation, discretisation, categorical encoding, ratio, and multivariate mathematical function. The impact of the domain knowledge is examined by pairwise (with and without derived variables) performance comparisons for five classification techniques (decision trees, naive Bayes, logistic regression, artificial neural networks, k-nearest neighbours). The impact is measured by two classifier performance criteria: sensitivity and area under the ROC-curve (AUC). The McNemar significance test is used to verify the results. Based on the results, two hypotheses are clearly verified and accepted, three hypotheses are partly verified, and one hypothesis had to be rejected on the basis of the case study results. The thesis reveals a significant positive impact of domain knowledge-driven variable derivation on classifier performance for options of all six tested steps. Furthermore, the findings indicate that the classification technique influences the impact of the variable derivation steps, and the bundling of steps has a significant higher performance impact if the variables are derived by using domain knowledge (compared to a non-knowledge application). Finally, the research turns out that an empirical examination of the domain knowledge impact is very complex due to a high level of interaction between the selected research parameters (variable derivation step, classification technique, and performance criteria).

Abstract:

The disappointing economic performance of Nigerian, Ghanaian, and the Togolese economies, coupled with the globalization of activities in the world economy, have forced them to look outward for development strategies. Many studies have been attempted to estimate the impact of natural resources on foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows around the world, but very few have been focused on Ghana, Nigeria and Togo. This study departed from previous studies and employed a gravity-type framework to explicitly explore the question of whether natural resource endowments was a more relevant factor that explained the FDI’s attraction to the countries under study. The study also included other FDI determinants. Accordingly, this study served to investigate whether natural resources attracted FDI inflows in Ghana, Nigeria, and Togo. Using time series data from 1980–2015, the study was conducted to answer two research questions. Two models were established utilizing the pooled ordinary least square method to estimate the coefficients of the models. Preliminary results were obtained using both the random effect and fixed effect models. The results of the study yielded by both techniques registered natural resources to be significant as a driven factor for FDI inflows to the countries under review. Other factors such as GDP per capita, trade openness, political stability, and economic liberalization were also found to be significant in FDI determination.
