Grobler, Marthinus Petrus Johannes. "Green business and environmental issues: family versus non-family business." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1008058.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of the study was to understand whether family businesses and non-family business differ from one another regarding green business and environmental issues. Green business issues are of global importance for the continued existence of business within the world. Businesses do not exist in isolation but within the context of the environment within which they function. Business has an impact on the environment and the environment has an impact on business. Furthermore, family businesses constitute a large part of the world economy and estimates range from 60-90 percent of GDP contributed by family businesses. In the South African context family businesses also form a significant part of the business environment. A literature study was conducted. The study identified five factors and considered each of these factors in the study. The five factors are: Green Business; Values; Stewardship; Succession; and, Stakeholders. In addition to a literature, primary research was conducted and data were collected by means of a questionnaire that collected data on the factors identified as well as some biographical information, including race, age and the sectors in which the respondents operated. The study’s findings correspond with the literature study, although no clear difference was found between family business and non-family business relating to green business and environmental issues. Family businesses do however believe that they are stewards of the environment and need to care for the environment.

This study investigated the different business continuity risks organisations face and the existence of business continuity plans to address and manage these risks. The study found that although the majority of organisations are aware of the business continuity risks that they are faced with, not all fully understand the impact thereof on their organisations, and accordingly do not have effective and adequate business continuity plans in place to address and manage these risks. Also, not all organisations are placing enough emphasis on the establishment of a business continuity culture within their organisations to support their business continuity philosophy and plan.

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate, identify and analyze how the competitive strategies affect companies’ performances in the telecommunications services providers industry. We first performed a revision of the theoretical framework that underpins the research to identify the strategic variables, environmental performances and models and typologies. For a sample set containing 30 companies listed on New York Stock Exchange, data were collected in accounting documents published by companies and supplemented by survey, considering five years between 2004 and 2009. These data were analyzed using multivariate statistics which allowed the identification and composition of the strategic groups (clusters). Next, we checked the adherence among the strategic typology and clusters chosen and examined the performance differences between the various clusters, emphasizing the study of the relationship between strategic positioning and performance. The test results suggested an alignment between the used typology and statistical results confirming the initial assumptions of the empirical research.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2001.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study project investigates the impact of major factors that influenced the Australian wine industry over the past decade. The project starts of with an in-depth look at the history of the Australian wine industry whilst simultaneously comparing the plantings and growth in production within their industry from 1994 to 1997 to that of their operations when the industry started out in 1788. The thesis concentrates on the factors that characterized the global wine industry during the mid 1990's that were: • Wine trade would continue to grow in terms of volume in spite of a continuing fall in the quantities consumed worldwide. • Commitments undertaken by signatories to the GATT's Uruguay Round Agreements in Marrakech in 1994 would ensure that trade develops not just within trading blocs but amongst them too. • New World and Eastern-European exporters would threaten EU dominance of international markets. Furthermore, focus is placed on the driving forces within the current global wine industry with special emphasis on the new world countries showing growth in production and consumption in contrast to the old world countries predominantly. Taxation gets investigated from a consumer, producer and the Australian government's point of view as well as a comparative model between Australian wine consumption and consumption in the rest of the world during the pre-tax period as well as the post-tax period. Chapter 6 looks at Vision 2025 that the Australian wine industry developed due to a need identified to become globally competent by the industry themselves. Emphasis is placed on the whole issue of one industry turning a production-driven wine economy around into a market-driven industry with every participant within the industry "marketing" a set of strategic objectives that will ultimately benefit their whole industry. Chapter 7 looks at the Australian wine industry from an objective point of view whilst benchmarking the industry against the major global wine trends as well as against quality performances of the global role players. Emphasis is placed on the differences and similarities that Australia's wine booms have in common as well as the lessons that any upcoming wine producing country have to learn form Australia's wine boom such as: o Developnew market opportunities o Develop a long-term vision for sustainable growth o Invest in the latest technologies o Develophealthy relations with growers and marketers o Investment in product differentiation through promotions o Attract the necessary resources Finally, focus is placed on South Africa's Vision 2020 and how the local industry will benefit from the objectives been set out to be achieved.

Narmanli, Murat. "A Business Rule Approach To Requirements Traceability." Master's thesis, METU, 2010. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12612399/index.pdf.

Abstract:
In this thesis, a requirements traceability model is proposed in order to make efficient and effective change request impact analysis. The proposed model is a requirements &ndash
requirements traceability model. There are several researches regarding software requirements traceability problem. The main problem of these researches is that the proposed solutions can not be applied to software industry with affordable changes. However, current literature begins to see that describing all the software requirements in a huge black box is not so much applicable to today&rsquo
s more dynamic and bigger software projects, especially regarding change management. The proposed traceability model tries to be a solution to these problems. Change requests and business rules are two important and popular terms for today&rsquo
s software industry. The traceability model consists of three types of software requirements: data definitions, business rules and use cases. The traceability model proposes bidirectional traces between these types. Data definitions, business rules and use cases are related to each other and they all should be seen as parts of a software system which should work together to make the software system work properly. Empirical investigation is made on a real industrial software project. These types were configured in order to match to the project specific needs in a reconfigurable way. Experimental results show that the traceability model has an acceptable degree of correctness.

Gyllefjord, Fredrik, and Vladimir Lolic. "Persistency & trends : Stock price impact of interim reports." Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, Accounting and Finance, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-420.

Full text
Abstract:

Problem: Interim and annual reports are some of the most crucial sources of information regarding companies’ performances. Interested parties such as analysts and investors assess this information and compare it with expectations. Analysts’ expectations of companies’ interim reports are of great importance when analysing the future development of share movement. Possible deviations between analysts’ expectations and actual presented results from the individual companies might change the perceptions of specific future stock prices. Furthermore business sectors have different characteristics and might respond differently to unexpected earnings news. Over- and underperformance of the presented results in relation to analysts’ expectations could create specific stock price movements over a forthcoming period depending on the nature of the report. The authors label this phenomenon as persistent trends.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis was to establish whether persistency and trends could be observed in the future development of companies’ stock prices with regard to analysts’ expectations and the true result presented by the companies.

Method: With a quantitative approach the authors conducted an event study aiming to fulfill the purpose of this thesis. The study consisted of all fourth quarter reports presented 2001 throughout 2004 by the companies presently listed on the Most traded section of the Stockholm stock exchange A-list. The authors defined the nature of the studied reports as positive or negative depending on whether the pre-tax earning exceeded or were lower than the analysts’ expectations. Furthermore the authors constructed a mathematical formula which distinguished if the possible deviation of actual results compared to expectations was significant. The share price performance for two months subsequent to the earnings announcement was recorded and compared with the OMXS30 development for the equivalent time, thereby the authors gathered empirical evidence to fulfill the purpose. Furthermore the data was also divided into business subcategories to provide answers to whether there was uniform response to unexpected earnings information among business sectors.

Results: The authors presented empirically founded evidence for the existence of persistent trends following the presentation of both positive and negative reports. The authors also rejected the presence of a uniform response to deviating earnings information in the business sectors.

Abstract:
Some information systems in a group of kind of organizations (for example government administrative organizations) have a critical role so they must achieve requirements in a rigorous way. However, it is not a common practice to use validation tasks, so these requirements usually do not correspond to the need. This study aims to analyze the financial impact the adoption of practices related to validation in the phase of requirements management and analysis of software development. This study was carried out based on pre-test and post-test approach; in our case, we perform: first, an evaluation of a relevant and representative project; second, the organization introduces software validation tasks; and finally, an evaluation of an equivalence project with the improved process. We found that both project performed change during software life cycle. However, in the first one, the change was performed in the final stage, while the second project was made during the analysis stage. The requirements management and analysis process were improved and the results were observed during first stages and it represents a 16% of saved.

Abou-Foul, Mohamad. "Antecedents of servitization strategies in manufacturing firms and servitization's impact on firm performance : a theoretical and empirical analysis." Thesis, University of West London, 2018. https://repository.uwl.ac.uk/id/eprint/5497/.

Full text
Abstract:
Manufacturing firms have vigorously pursued opportunities for profitability and growth through service-led growth strategies. A major part of the existing literature has focused on such strategies and has shown that this phenomenon is prevalent and growing in most developed economies. However, very little systematic evidence regarding the extent or consequences of servitization, based on comprehensive survey research, yet exists. Furthermore, the current body of research presents contradictory findings regarding the impact of servitization on firm performance. Drawing on the theoretical framework of the resource-based view, this research seeks to shed some light on this question by exploring the effect of servitization on firm performance. Through a survey of 185 U.S. and European manufacturing firms, along with the use of secondary financial data, this thesis provides empirical evidence that servitization has a direct, positive effect on firm performance. The study also finds that for the vast majority of manufacturers, the development of learning capabilities has served as a significant driver of servitization. Furthermore, the relationship between servitization and firm performance is moderated by industry dynamism. The original contribution of this research to the field of knowledge is twofold, including a theoretical contribution through the validation of the theoretical model and its implications for the literature, and a pragmatic contribution through the managerial implications of the findings. The findings have significant managerial implications because achieving superior bottom-line results is contingent upon the integration of those learning-and service-specific capabilities that transform the nature of an offering. Such integration enables the manufacturing firm and its customers to achieve radically improved operation within their ecosystems.

Full text
Abstract:

A sustainable development of entrepreneurship will not be possible in such a complex andchallenging environment as today’s society, without the attainment of effective learning andbusiness support capabilities (Williams, 1998). One such support is obtained through havingexperienced entrepreneurs mentor less experienced entrepreneurs, transferring knowledge(Clutterbuck, 2004) and facilitating learning (Sullivan, 2000). As Leonard Bisk (2002)and Sullivan (2000) among other researchers (Deakins et al. 1997) stress, there is a need tolook beyond the start-up process of a firm and the use of mentorship in this early phase, and focus more on how entrepreneurs who have been in business for a while can benefitfrom a mentor program, an area referred to as “the nature of timing and support” (Sullivan,2000, p. 163).

The purpose of this thesis is to explore how an experienced entrepreneur, a mentor, canhelp a less experienced entrepreneur, an adept, achieve entrepreneurial development duringand throughout different phases of the entrepreneurial life cycle, in the most efficient manner.

An entrepreneurial life cycle can be divided into several phases, which can be used in orderto examine the entrepreneur’s development process within different time periods of runninga firm. Start-up support generally involves providing entrepreneurs with the crucial“tools” for survival, such as basic financial support, bookkeeping and marketing (Sullivan,2000). Mature entrepreneurs generally request psychological benefits, such as reassuranceand improved confidence as they wonder whether or not their experiences are normal andhow they should be interpreted (Megginson et al. 2006). There are two types of directivementoring styles, coaching and counseling, and two types of non directive mentoring, counseling and networking.

The main objective with our research in this thesis was to explore how entrepreneurs’ developmentthroughout and during different phases was affected by active participation in amentor program. To gather information we used a qualitative method, in which we interviewedten entrepreneurs who were currently active in a mentor program, or had been activewithin the last 12 months. The empirical findings were later analyzed in the light of theframe of references and the authors own viewpoint, by conducting a within case/cross casecomparisons.

The results indicate that a mentor can best help an entrepreneur achieve entrepreneurialdevelopment by providing non directive support, enabling the entrepreneur to draw his orher own conclusions and stimulate self reliance. This support is best delivered after thestart-up and conception phase, the first phase of the life-cycle.

Karlsven, Matthew J. "Facilitating Training Transfer for Entrepreneurs Enrolled in Business Training Programs in Peru." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2021. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/9235.

Full text
Abstract:
Entrepreneurship and business training programs have been created and administered throughout the world and particularly in developing economies to help entrepreneurs open new businesses and grow their current businesses. Evaluations of these programs have shown that most of them successfully help entrepreneurs expand their knowledge and understanding of business principles and practices, but few entrepreneurs will then apply or transfer what they learn into their businesses. Without many entrepreneurs making changes in how they run their businesses, it is no surprise that these training programs generally show little impact on sales or profits. This research explores how business training programs in developing economies can help entrepreneurs go beyond just learning about business principles to making changes in their businesses based on those principles. Put simply, this research explores how training programs can help entrepreneurs act on what they learn. The research for this dissertation is presented in three articles. Article 1 includes a review and analysis of findings from a decade of evaluations and research on entrepreneurship training programs in developing economies around the world. In this analysis, I identified factors that have been found to positively affect training transfer, and then based on these findings I developed a theoretical framework of how training transfer can be facilitated. Article 2 is a multiple case analysis of seven trainers from two different entrepreneurship training programs based in Lima, Peru. This article includes an analysis of six months of in-field observations and interviews conducted in Peru, revealing several challenges trainers face while helping entrepreneurs apply what they learn as well as strategies the trainers use in their efforts to overcome those challenges. Article 3 includes a field experiment to test if using learning contracts in a training program will help more entrepreneurs begin following new business practices. This article also includes a quasi-experimental impact evaluation of the training program as a whole on entrepreneurs' business knowledge, application of business principles, and sales and expenses. The learning contracts showed some impact but not on all business practices. The training program as a whole had a statistically significant impact on knowledge and application but the impact on sales was not statistically significant.

Abstract:

A wave of sustainability initiatives is affecting many traditional corporate functions. While many companies focus on their own internal sustainability initiatives, there is a small but growing number of initiatives focused on promoting sustainability across the supply chain. The resulting sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) is faced with the challenge of justifying its contribution to the performance of the focal company. This study attempts to gain insights into the perception professionals have of the impact of SSCM on corporate environmental, social, and economic performance. The study looks into the moderating effects of company size, industry collaboration, and regulatory framework on the relationship between SSCM and corporate performance. Using a mixed methods approach, this research collected and analyzed quantitative and qualitative data from 242 respondents. Simple and multiple linear regressions in Minitab 17 were used to analyze the quantitative data; qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. In the end, triangulation was used to integrate the quantitative and qualitative analyses to gain a deeper understanding of the perceptions reported by survey respondents.

The results of this study show that SSCM is statistically significant to corporate environmental, social, and economic performance based on the independent variables analyzed. The results also show that the moderating effect of company size, industry collaboration, and regulatory framework on the relationship between SSCM and corporate performance made a difference for all three moderators based on factorial plot analysis. However, only the regulatory framework was found to be a statistically significant moderator based on regression analysis. Thematic analysis of the qualitative data showed that SSCM helps the focal company mitigate risks and improve, or preserve, its reputation. Another benefit of SSCM is its ability to help the focal company create a competitive edge with sustainability-conscious stakeholders. At the macro level, the benefits of SSCM are in the areas of long term availability of natural resources, respect for human rights, and better opportunities for persons from socially disadvantaged groups. The challenges of SSCM were reported to be in the areas of cost, difficult enforcement and implementation, and the lack of a common commitment to SSCM throughout the supply chain. These challenges could be overcome through leadership, collaboration, and consistent regulations at the corporate, industry, and country levels respectively. The triangulation (meta inference) showed alignment between the correlation between SSCM and economic performance, and the fact that solutions to most of the reported challenges to the implementation of SSCM in the thematic analysis had economic implications for the focal company. This study provides corporate leaders and governments with meaningful insights into how SSCM can be leveraged as an effective tool to enhance corporate performance and sustainability initiatives.

Christie, Adrian Troy. "An Impact Assessment and Dependency Management Framework for BPM." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/39286.

Full text
Abstract:
Business Process Management (BPM) is a relatively new development paradigm that takes a high-level approach to coding by leveraging a graphical, “flow chart” aesthetic that allows users to assemble modular tasks into a larger process. The resulting diagrams effectively enshrine the organizations processes into an executable model that provides an objective and transparent view of the process and the activities contained within. In doing so, BPM models serve as both a system to guide employees through proper business procedures as well as documentation of the businesses processes. Similar to most other software development environments, BPM development platforms possess several features intended to address the needs of code versioning, dependency management and impact assessment. However, due to the unique way that development is done in BPM platforms, the more traditional functionality of these features sometimes renders them ineffective and ill suited to the task of BPM development. Changes to lower level reusable components in these BPM models can result in impacts to diverse processes across an organization that are difficult to predict and onerous to locate. There is much room for improvement in BPM development tools. This thesis proposes a new framework for dependency management and impact assessment to improve the usability, effectiveness and efficiency. The framework is composed of a Business Process Component Architecture, a Dependency Data Model and an Upgrade Algorithm which are all used to provide increased visibility over dependent processes and superior guidance during upgrade operations. Several example case scenarios are be used to evaluate our proposed framework. The cases represent progressive degrees of complexity to test the capabilities and robustness of the framework. Overall, the framework was able to appropriately handle the case examples used and showed promise in terms of providing practical effort, time and cost savings for BPM developers. The framework can also provide developers assistance in locating circular dependencies, but is subject to the same limitations as developers when attempting to upgrade these relationships.

Abstract:
Over reliance on fossil fuels, rising global population, industrialization, demands for a higher standard of living and transportation have caused alarming damage to the environment. If current trend continues then catastrophic damage to the earth and its environment may not be reversible. There is an urgent need to reduce the use of fossils fuels and substituting it with renewable energy sources such as wind, tidal and hydroelectric. Solar source seems to be the most promising due to its environmental friendly nature, portability and reliability. This source was examined in terms of microbusinesses such as SMEs including hair dressing salon, education centre, fried chicken outlet and printing shop. Small businesses account for a large proportion of the economy. The analysis developed could be applied to small business to show their contribution to the carbon footprint and how this could be reduced using solar energy. The proportions of their current electricity usage that could be substituted with solar cells were calculated. Combined these have a significant impact. These businesses were considered for UK and Iraq with the former being more amenable to solar energy implementation. Analysis of the four SMEs showed that the most energy intensive business was fried chicken take away using a large amount of electricity and the least energy intensive business was the education centre. In the latter in UK 57% of the electricity usage could be replaced by solar energy compared to Kurdistan, which generated a surplus energy that could be fed into the national grid. The gents groom hairdressing and blue apple businesses gave intermediate figures. Parallel conclusions were drawn regarding CO2 emissions released into the atmosphere with education centre being the most environmentally friendly and the fried chicken the least. In addition, a larger public space, an international airport data was analysed and the value of solar replacement demonstrated. The methodology and data analysis approach used may be implemented for other business units and larger public spaces such as hospitals, shopping complexes and football stadiums.

Tuck, Gaynaé. "A critical analysis of the impact of changing trends in legislation on the management of family businesses." Thesis, Port Elizabeth Technikon, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/211.

Abstract:
A business needs to be dynamic and adjustable to survive in the ever-changing marketplace in which it operates. The environment is no longer merely the immediate domestic business environment within which the specific business operates but also, with the advent of information technology and globalisation, overseas markets. This is true for all businesses and no less so in respect of family businesses. Balshaw (2003:23) lists the many issues which impede family businesses as, amongst others: Unresolved family and personal issues; Dysfunctional relationships; Poor communication; Lack of commitment; No succession plan or timetable; Inability of the senior generation to relinquish control; No unifying vision or dream in the family; Open conflict; Nonexistent decision-making and governance structures; Lack of transparency and openness; Failure to plan strategically. In addition to this the business must be aware of and react to the changing circumstances in the environment.

Hird, Andrew P. "A psychometric analysis of nascent entrepreneurs : understanding the impact of individual entrepreneurial cognition on the founding and survival of new small businesses." Thesis, University of Hull, 2007. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:6436.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to investigate nascent entrepreneurship. Developing a new business is a complex and uncertain process. Different types of individuals react to this uncertainty in different ways. It is argued that cognitive factors play a critical role in the venture creation process and that the cognitive milieu of the individual nascent entrepreneur will impact on the founding process and survival chances of new small businesses. In particular this study investigates how cognitive style impacts on the ability of nascent entrepreneurs to recognise opportunities and develop trading businesses. The research was conducted assuming a realist ontology and positivist epistemology. A range of validated and reliable psychometric instruments were administered to nascent entrepreneurs from research sites across the UK. A major strength of this research is that it was conducted within the nascent stage reducing the risk of hindsight bias. Following an extensive review of the literature a range of hypotheses were developed and tested. Principally located within the psychological domain the thesis also acknowledges the impact of behavioural dispositions on the founding process. The findings indicated that cognitive style was not a predictor of nascent entrepreneurship but that it was highly influential on the process of founding new businesses. Both intuitive and analytic nascent entrepreneurs started businesses. There was no difference in the survival rates of the businesses they founded. However the research identified that the process of business formation and survival developed in different ways. Cognitive factors such as self-efficacy and behavioural dispositions such as proactive personality were identified as significant moderators within this process.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate and report on the impact and effectiveness of a Small Business Development Center consulting program. The consulting program consisted of two individualized, self-paced, interactive computer courseware sets which were designed to deliver information about business computer systems to small business owners. The study was descriptive and exploratory in nature, utilizing a pre- and post-experience application of an attitudinal instrument. The participants were small business owners in Indiana. The primary research question related to the impact that the Indiana Small Business Development Center computer assistance consulting program had upon the attitudes of small business owners toward computers in their firms. The attitude of the participants toward computers was positive prior to the experience and remained so after the experience. Other major findings regarding small business owners' perceptions of the consulting program were as follows:1. Nearly 90 percent of the participants indicated that an individualized, self-paced, interactive computer courseware set was a useful way to obtain instruction about business computer systems, and 96.2 percent indicated that they would recommend the program under investigation to other small business owners.2. Although the majority of the participants had not used an integrated software package that contains word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications under one software umbrella prior to this study, following their interaction with the courseware sets almost 74 percent indicated that an integrated package would be practical for their businesses.3. Almost all (96.2 percent) of the participants found a graphical user interface to be useful in helping them understand the computer software.4. Participants preferred to use business associates and seminars or courses as sources of information for learning about computers for their firms, but lack of time prevents them from learning as much as they would like. Results of this study indicate that as adult learners, small business owners are a fragmented population, and therefore difficult to reach via traditional adult education programs. More emphasis by government and educational institutions on providing small business owners with training and education regarding computers and more research conducted in developing programs are suggested.

Saisorn, Raywadee. "An analysis of the impact of governmental regulations on small business enterprises: a case study of Campbellton Plaza." DigitalCommons@Robert W. Woodruff Library, Atlanta University Center, 1987. http://digitalcommons.auctr.edu/dissertations/2185.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary intent of this study is to examine the impact of governmental regulations on Small Business Enterprises located at the Campbellton Plaza. Campbellton Plaza is one of the fourteen commercial districts in Atlanta which has been targeted for revitalization by the City of Atlanta. The project is a joint venture operated by Southwest Economic Development Corporation, the Citizens and Southern National Bank, the Atlanta Economic Development Corporation, Georgia State University Small Business Program and the Bureau of Planning. The writer, through working with the small businesses and the city government at the Campbellton Plaza observed that the federal government as well as state and local municipalities played important roles by giving assistance to small business in several ways. For the merchants to be eligible for the needed assistance, they have to comply with several criteria, regulatory guidelines and deadline. Although this study is confined to the Campbellton Plaza, it is hoped that the study will contribute to a better understanding of the impacts of the governmental regulations on small business in general by the readers of this paper. This study was chosen because of constant complaints by the merchants about the criteria in getting the Business Improvement Loan Fund designated to the Campbellton Plaza. The data for this study were obtained from both primary and secondary sources, and the methodology employed is descriptive analysis.

Abstract:
The United States Defense Industrial Base (USDIB) is an essential industry to both the economic prosperity of the US and its strategic control over many advanced military systems and technologies. The USDIB, which encompasses the industries of aerospace and defense, is a volatile industry - prone to many internal and external factors that cause demand to ebb and flow widely year over year. Among the factors that influence the volume of systems the USDIB delivers to its international customers are the arms export controls of the US. These controls impose a divergence from the historical US foreign policy of furthering an open exchange of ideas and liberalized trade. These controls, imposed by the Departments of Commerce, Defense, and State rigidly control all international presence of the Industry. The overlapping controls create an inability to conform to rapidly changing realpolitiks, leaving these controls in an archaic state. This, in turn, imposes a great deal of anxiety and expense upon managers within and outside of the USDIB. Using autoregressive integrated moving average time-series analyses, this paper confirms that the implementation of or amendment to broad arms export controls correlates to significant and near immediate declines in USDIB export volumes. In the context of the US's share of world arms exports, these controls impose up to a 20% decline in export volume.

Victor, Elizabeth Kaye. "Structure and Agency: An Analysis of the Impact of Structure on Group Agents." Scholar Commons, 2012. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4246.

Full text
Abstract:
Different kinds of collectives help to coordinate between individuals and social groups to solve distribution problems, supply goods and services, and enable individuals to live fulfilling lives. Collectives, as part of the process of socialization, contribute to the normalization of behaviors, and consequently, structure our ability to be self-reflective autonomous agents. Contemporary philosophy of action models characterize collective action as the product of individuals who have the proper motivations to perform cooperative activities (bottom-up); or they begin with the social-level phenomena and explain this in terms of individual actions and the mental states that motivate them (top-down). One general goal of this project is to show how and why both of these approaches through focusing solely on the individuals involved fail to capture and account for important types of group actions: those of economic group agents. Group agents, one kind of organized collective, are unique in that they have the potential to develop group-level decision-making processes that result in the capacity of the group to engage in practical reasoning. Because of this capacity, group agents can be stable and respond to reason--capacities we would not expect from other kinds of collectives. Inasmuch as we value the possibility of influencing the reflexive dynamics that perpetuate social institutions, understanding the range of organization structures and their agential capacities will open up the possibility of altering the course of those dynamics toward more just systems of organization. Understanding what kinds of group agents currently operate within the systems of organizations that make up social institutions is the first step in determining how to move toward developing group agents that are also moral agents. By analyzing how different systems of constraint--inside and outside the firm--inform one another to influence the possibility of design and the group's possibilities for action, I use Christian List and Philip Pettit's account of group agency as a springboard to develop a more adequate account of how structure influences and constrains the possibilities of economic group agents in non-idealized circumstances (i.e. this world, with our history). My chapters include 1) a taxonomy of organization structures and an analysis of how a narrow conception of organization structure in jurisprudence can lead to systems of constraint that limit the rights and freedoms of individuals even as it seeks to extend them, 2) an evaluation of the popular accounts of collective action (cf. Raimo Tuomela, 1997; Michael Bratman, 1993, 1997, 2009; and Christian List and Philip Pettit, 2011) that could be made to accommodate the actions of certain kinds of economic associations, 3) an exploration of the standards of evaluation that influence these powerful group agents, and how these standards limit the economic group agent's capacity to engage in moral reasoning, and 4) an analysis of the group agent's reasoning capacity and the internal mode of interaction between group agent and group members that perpetuate group agency. I argue that we can understand group agents that have the capacity to be moral agents as the products of a particular kind of decision-making process within an organization's structure. The decision-making process, together with the organization structure and group member support, produces and sustains judgments and actions at the level of the group that cannot be reduced to the beliefs and actions of particular members. In this way, the group displays a systematic unity of actions based on its own judgments. That is, the group exhibits agency. Moral group agents exhibit more than practical reasoning; they also demonstrate the capacity for critical reflection upon the ends they pursue. Member buy-in promotes a tight connection between group members and their role in bringing about and sustaining group agency, and is the foundation of the group agent. Without a holistic organization structure, a member's personal identities could undermine group aims, thereby undermining group agency. Group moral agency, I argue, begins with promoting an organizational way of life conducive to collective flourishing and respect for members.

Full text
Abstract:
Recently, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) indicated lack of competition and single-bid contracts in asphalt paving as a major issue facing state transportation departments. Single-bid contracts indicate a lack of competition which increases costs to state and local governments. During the period from 2005-2007 in Kentucky, 42 percent of all bids were awarded with only one firm bidding on the project. Of the asphalt paving jobs, 63 percent of those jobs were awarded to a single bidder. The analysis of this dissertation focuses on detecting tacit collusion in asphalt paving jobs in Kentucky. A focal point enables firms to coordinate bids and engage in a tit-for-tat strategy where they refuse to bid in each other’s counties. In this case the focal point is the county boundaries. Two factors contribute to the ability of firms to use county boundaries to coordinate bids. The first factor is that the political county boundaries form relatively small counties which allow a firm’s service area to cover multiple counties. The firms are able to claim counties and service the projects in those counties. The second factor is that a majority of asphalt projects which the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet puts up for bidding are exclusive to a specific county. This allows firms to know whether a project falls in a county within their bidding territory. Each county and firm in each of the 12 Kentucky Transportation Cabinet geographic districts was analyzed to see if there was evidence of bid coordination. The result is that in 94 out of 120 counties there was evidence of bid coordination or tacit collusion with increases in bid levels. There is evidence that 25 of the 31 Kentucky asphalt paving firms refuse to bid against their rivals in their rival’s territories. This refusal by firms to bid against each other resulted in single-bid contracts that were $70,595,466.09 above the competitive level.

Arshi, Tahseen Anwer. "Entrepreneurial orientation and its impact on innovation intensity in the Omani corporate sector." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/622108.

Full text
Abstract:
Entrepreneurial Orientation (EO) is a widely researched construct of corporate entrepreneurship. Despite long-standing research on EO, past studies on this construct have been unable to resolve issues related to its measurement. Innovation Intensity (II) is also a dynamic construct of corporate entrepreneurship but has received relatively less empirical attention. Previous research has reported an absence of an empirically validated quantitative scale of innovation, particularly innovation intensity. This research has addressed these gaps by proposing a refinement and validation of the Entrepreneurial Orientation scale and the development of an Innovation Intensity scale. The research proposes an Entrepreneurial Transformational Model (ETM) positing that EO impacts II. A predominantly quantitative research strategy supported by qualitative inputs, is employed to obtain empirical data from 404 corporate firms in Oman, drawing from a list of corporate firms registered with the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry. A mix of questionnaire survey and semi-structured interviews was conducted with senior managers from firms representing various industries of the Omani corporate sector. Utilising exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and structural equation modelling (SEM), a two-stage data analysis approach was adopted. Measurement and structural models were developed for EO and II measures, while a complete SEM model was developed to test the causal relationship between EO and II. The results indicate that EO is a second-order construct consisting of five first-order factors, namely ready to innovate, competitive aggressiveness, autonomy, risk taking and proactiveness, which are its reflective components. Similarly, II is a second-order construct consisting of two first-order factors, namely degree and frequency of incremental and radical innovation, which are its reflective components. The II scale developed through this study allows corporate firms to assess their innovation intensity on a two-dimensional four-celled grid with varying levels of degree and frequency of innovation. Finally, EO is found to influence II and the entire relationship is posited as Entrepreneurial Transformation Model. This study, by addressing the empirical irregularities, has brought clarity to the measurement of EO and II constructs and is an original contribution to the advancement of theoretical knowledge and improvement in professional practice.

Abstract:
Introduction: The Intellectual Capital (IC) term was introduced by Sveiby and his group in Sweden 1986 (Sullivan, 1998). The main point in all organizational analyses is to evaluate performance, and therefore an organization’s success is not imaginable without a performance evaluation system. Performance assessment is a process that measures, evaluates, and judges the performance over time. Performance assessment in organizations is usually established for assuring the effectiveness of activities. Purpose: The purpose of the research is to identify and emphasize the relationship and impact of Intellectual Capital (IC) on the manufacturing companies by analyzing the level of their financial performance in the Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE). Research Question: What is the impact of the Pulic (1998) form of intellectual capital efficiency on the financial performance of manufacturing companies on the Tehran Stock Exchange? Hypothesis: H1: The value-added intellectual coefficient (VAIC) has relation with the financial performance, measured by DEA, of Pharmaceutical and food companies in the Tehran Stock Exchange.H2: The human capital efficiency (HCE) has relation with the financial performance, measured by DEA, of pharmaceutical and food companies in the Tehran Stock Exchange, .H3: The structural capital efficiency (SCE) has relation with the financial performance, measured by DEA, of pharmaceutical and food companies in the Tehran Stock Exchange.H4: The capital employed efficiency (CEE) has relation with the financial performance, measured by DEA, of pharmaceutical and food companies in the Tehran Stock Exchange. Methodology: The methodology used is a Quantitative Method with a deductive, positivism approach. Collection of statistical data is gathered regarding Pharmaceutical & Food manufacturing industries and evaluated IC through Pulic 1998 VAIC model along with observed FP through the DEA method. After getting the VAIC and FP regression method is used to test our Hypothesis Results: Except H2 with pharmaceutical and H3 with food industries all other hypothesizes are accepted

Abstract:
Over the course of the last few years, the fashion industry hasbegun to focus more resources on their digital transition. For afashion e-commerce business, it is essential to know whether ornot to invest money and time in building a modern webapplication. This master's thesis aims at finding practical resultson how transitioning from a multi-page website towards a SinglePage Application can have an impact on the businessperformances of the company, as measured by ConversionRate, Page Views and Gross Sales. In collaboration with thedevelopment and product team of a fashion company, thismaster's thesis is based on the six-months development of a newSingle Page Application using the Javascript framework React.js,building on known User-Experience Design principles andHuman-Computer Interface heuristics. The live data collectionfrom the website's audience allowed a quantitative analysis ofthe transition's effect on business performance, which showedpositive impact on business performance. A qualitative usersurvey was then conducted in order to further elaborate on thecauses of the aforementioned impact: all respondents praisedthe Single Page Application as compared to the multi-pagewebsite, and noted lower Response Time, efficient filter-andsearchsystem and high user interaction as advantages thatplayed in favour of their browsing experience and their will-tobuya product. The impact of lowering Response Time evenmore was discussed, as well as the different limitations due tothe scope of this thesis. A list of user suggestions for furtherimprovements was also compiled.
Jones, Michael Wayne. "An analysis of the impact of information systems on the level of trust in the construction industry." ScholarWorks, 2009. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/717.

Full text
Abstract:
Even though the current level of communication and information sharing is greater than it has ever been throughout the history of the construction industry, the problem under investigation stems from the results of current research that indicate that many major projects have difficulty in achieving client expectations, resulting in a negative image of the construction industry. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact on the level of trust in the use of information systems between construction firms and their clients. The theoretical foundations of this research were based in interdependence and coordination theories. While information systems enable improved communication processes, coordination and interdependency are central to mutually successful completion of construction projects. However, there is a lack of a prescriptive view present in the literature regarding the role of trust in enhancing client satisfaction through the use of information systems. The research questions that underlay this study were based on discovering the extent and nature of mistrust between contractors and their clients. Through the use of a qualitative methodology, data were collected through responses from a semi-structured, open-ended questionnaire. By analyzing consistencies in the responses, the researcher used grounded theory to determine trends and consistencies. The results revealed that while contractors believed trust existed between contractors and clients, clients believed mutual trust was low despite the increased communication through emails and current information systems. By emphasizing the notion of mutual trust in the communication process, contractors can improve the image of the construction industry. Abstract:
This research suggests that to model the complex dynamics of the organisational change in a firm evolving as it implements internet technologies requires capturing diverse independent and interdependent processes across multiple temporal and spatial context both within and external to the firm. This presents both an ontological and epistemological challenge as dominant research methods are either atemporal in nature and attribute action to disembodied variables or are simply storytelling. To provide explanatory legitimacy requires going deeper to capture the action of actors 'acting' within multiple levels of context and to pinpoint deeper 'rock-bottom' causal mechanisms that drive the higher order processes that give rise to the 'organisational life' we observe. To accomplish explanatory legitimacy I develop an analytical method that makes processuality fundamental and allows for the examination and theorising about mechanisms. The first essential element of this method is a framework that guides the researcher in the systematic gathering together of what we already know from the multidisciplinary and eclectic research in e-business, and in the intensive work of gathering empirical evidence. I apply a new methodology I call narrative sequence analysis, that combines process tracing and sequence analyses to make processes intelligible and help illustrate how mechanisms drive these processes. I use this method to develop an explanatory account of the process of e-business development covering three episodes of change within the Commonwealth Bank of Australia from 1995 to 2006. The research finds that the firm evolves over time as it develops new capabilities and identifies and pursues development opportunities by assembling and committing resources to e-business though both technology development and business application. It draws on past experience and gradually learns to develop, integrate and implement technology into existing business operations, discovers new innovative opportunities in which to apply the technology or is drawn into new areas by others who identify opportunities in which to apply the firm's knowledge, resources and technology. The path to development depends on the firms starting position and the timing of the sequence of events encountered along the way. It is a coevolutionary process where the firm interacts, cooperates, adapts and responds to the actions and interactions of other actors, balanced by the uncertainty of e-business and business operation risk.

Abstract:
This study examines the impact of knowledge, experience, goal orientation, ethical orientation, and personality traits on managers' and accountants' abilities to recognize misappropriation of assets. Participants included students and professionals. The student group included upper-level accounting majors and upper-level management majors. The professional group included students enrolled in an introductory accounting course for their MBA program and internal auditors from a variety of organizations. Findings in the study show that accounting students assessed the possibility that fraud was in progress at a higher level than the management students, suggesting that the accounting students acquire basic knowledge about fraud from the accounting curriculum, which improves performance. The effect of reading articles was marginally significant for assessing the possibility of fraud, showing that students who have read or who are required to read articles better identify the clues associated with employee theft. For the professional group, the effects of academic major and fraud specific training led to identifying the possibility of employee theft at a higher level. It appears that training sessions help professionals in identifying the risk factors associated with fraudulent activity, producing benefits to organizations that far outweigh the costs. Full-time work experience was marginally significant (p Several findings of the additional analysis using structural equation modeling extend the audit decision making literature by showing certain factors that enhance knowledge and improve decision making as experience increases. Higher learning goal orientation scores, mediated by experience and ethical position, should lead to more accurate identification of risk factors that are commonly associated with fraudulent activity. These findings should encourage firms to draw upon the knowledge of experts as they develop expert decision aids and training sessions for internal audit departments. Organizations should also integrate actual instances of misappropriation of assets into training sessions on fraud prevention and detection while developing and improving models of training sessions and expert decision aids for unstructured, complex tasks.

With the rapidly changing business environment and arriving of the new millennium, challenges and risks facing enterprises, despite technological advances, become much more complicated. Enterprises have to face not only human induced disasters such as terrorist attacks, financial crises, but also natural disasters and other unexpected events. Consequently, business continuity management, BCM, has been embraced by many business entities. With available analysis tools, an enterprise can consider all factors having possible impact on BCM. With detailed work procedures to guide the evaluation teams completing the step-by-step analysis, omission of impact of key factors and processes can be prevented, which helps to ensure the integrity of the assessment. According to this study, business impact analysis, BIA, should consider three possible situations such as including the normal business cycle, economic recession and the possibility of non-expected surge in production capacity. BIA should be conducted for all situations to explore the maximum tolerable period of disruption, MTPD, and the recovery time objective, RTO, and to establish the comprehensive recovery program accordingly. In this study, risk assessment is conducted utilizing the risk matrix model of the Australia / New Zealand HB 221:2004 Business Continuity Managrment Standard. Severity is classified into financial and non-financial impact, which includes business management, finance, operations, and disaster. The significant risk contains 20 items within which 17 items are considered to be associated with management and finance, and risk management is the main focus of BCM. With the unexpected occurrence of the financial crises, manufacturers tend to reduce inventories to prevent potential losses. Maintaining cash flow is the primary objective it, but it also prolongs the supply period and the conflicting phenomenon of suppliers’ response time in a sudden surge of demands. This research predicts more complex relationships and heavy reliance among a company’s supply chain members. For improved supply chain management, in addition to quality and delivery time, it should also include the suppliers’ capability in safety and health management, overall management performance and cash flow management to avoid all potential impacts.
