Abstract:
Business Intelligence (BI) is a topic that has attracted attention from both researchers and practitioners. Despite BI's promising possibilities, few organizations are able to transform BI-insights into actions. Thus, the purpose of this study was to understand: How organizations can transform BI insights into actions, and which capabilities impact this transformation. In order to obtain this understanding, a case-study was conducted. We interviewed six consultants from leading consultancy firms, and a practitioner who uses BI on a daily basis. Prior to this, the authors reviewed previous BI literature which suggests that BI needs to be combined with capabilities for employees to utilize BI. Microfoundations was used as a theoretical framework to identify important capabilities and how they relate to BI. The findings distinguished specific capabilities that impacts the ability to utilize BI. Capabilities such as communication, sponsorship, culture, and clear strategies & goals, are important in order to better take advantage of BI. The conclusions are that hard skills (e.g. technical competencies), education and experience among the employees may not be as crucial as previously thought. This is because BI-systems are becoming more intuitive and easier to use.

Abstract:
More and more organizations are beginning to see the benefits of Business Intelligence and why it should be implemented into their business. By using decision support systems, organizations can merge and process business data and thus get more out of their business. Today, access to business information within the business is no longer sufficient, but it also needs to be able to use real-time data through the mobile devices. This through Mobile Business Intelligence, which is about a mobile variant of the traditional business intelligence (BI). Given the current mobile usage and how it has increased accessibility and mobile device performance, there are great opportunities for Mobile BI in the business. Mobile BI as any new system will also come with a certain problematic and critical success factors have been analyzed and evaluated. Within the organizational support dimension, two success factors were identified that was confirmed critical by name management support and knowledge and skills. In addition to these, another two success factors could be proved critical, named data security and usability through the limited screen area. With this study, it will facilitate and make it easier for businesses to implement Mobile BI in their operations. The study addresses key success factors in implementing Mobile BI and what organizations should keep in mind.

Abstract:
In the last few years, a new generation of Business Intelligence (BI) tools called BI 2.0 has emerged to meet the new and ambitious requirements of business users. BI 2.0 not only introduces brand new topics, but in some cases it re-examines past challenges according to new perspectives depending on the market changes and needs. In this context, the term pervasive BI has gained increasing interest as an innovative and forward-looking perspective. This thesis investigates three different aspects of pervasive BI: personalization, timeliness, and integration. Personalization refers to the capacity of BI tools to customize the query result according to the user who takes advantage of it, facilitating the fruition of BI information by different type of users (e.g., front-line employees, suppliers, customers, or business partners). In this direction, the thesis proposes a model for On-Line Analytical Process (OLAP) query personalization to reduce the query result to the most relevant information for the specific user. Timeliness refers to the timely provision of business information for decision-making. In this direction, this thesis defines a new Data Warehuose (DW) methodology, Four-Wheel-Drive (4WD), that combines traditional development approaches with agile methods; the aim is to accelerate the project development and reduce the software costs, so as to decrease the number of DW project failures and favour the BI tool penetration even in small and medium companies. Integration refers to the ability of BI tools to allow users to access information anywhere it can be found, by using the device they prefer. To this end, this thesis proposes Business Intelligence Network (BIN), a peer-to-peer data warehousing architecture, where a user can formulate an OLAP query on its own system and retrieve relevant information from both its local system and the DWs of the net, preserving its autonomy and independency.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The goal for this thesis work was to develop Business Intelligence (BI) for an IT consultant company. LexiConsult is an IT consultant company in the Lexicon-group which offers expertise within Office (templates, database, spreadsheets, Outlook etc.) but also SharePoint development and services like support, documentation etcetera. We have investigated the functionality in SharePoint and MS SQL Server and have also evaluated which possibilities these platforms offer in terms of creating a BI-solution for LexiConsults needs. SharePoint offers a variety of different tools and services for BI but none of these where available in the Office365-version which LexiConsult uses. Another solution was therefore suggested where the reports should be published on a web hosting company. We have also studied critical success factors when implementing BI in an IT consulting company. The result is a set of BI-reports developed for SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), which the staff of LexiConsult can access via their SharePoint site. The reports are designed for monitoring and analysis of the economy with e.g. key performance indicators, drill-down of the revenue in different aspects such as by time period, per employee, per customer etcetera. The reports provides vital knowledge that can be used for decision support, e.g. which customers and which types of projects is the most profitable and should be given priority. Have the consultants had high occupancy rate lately and what is the forecast for the future? Should more consultants be hired? Some of the reports are restricted from access by others than management of the company, and some are accessible by all employees. Data is queried from the SQL-database to the company’s system for booking and invoicing as well as their SharePoint site. This data is transformed to information which should give knowledge about the company and its finances. The result of the thesis work is of interest both within the company and as a product targeting their customers.

Abstract:
This dissertation titled Designing Project Business Intelligence focuses on data warehouse in a medium-sized company. The theoretical portion of the thesis describes the topic of data warehouse and dimensional modeling. In the first theoretical chapter, I compare and contrast two approaches to datawarehouse building - Bill Inmon's and Ralph Kimball's. Then, basic terminology used in the field, principles of dimensional modeling and various approaches of database use will be described. Furthermore, the thesis illustrates the role of the Mondrian system as a mediator between the relational database and the OLAP server. Possible uses of the MDX language in working with multidimensional databases are outlined. The theoretical portion of the thesis ends with a description of the applicational interface XMLA, which can be used for facilitation communication between applications and the OLAP server. The practice-oriented portion of the thesis includes a complete design of the Business Intelligence project. The project is divided into the following parts: Feasibility Study, Project Planing, Business Requirements, Design and Development, and Deployment and Maintenance. The entire project operates exclusively on Open Source Software. Consequently, the project shows that small and medium-sized companies can afford to run a fully operating Business Intelligence system.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis Business Intelligence in Supply Chain Management deals on the edge of IT and logistics with designing conceptual solution for BI in SCM. It covers specific needs of Supply-Chains, usage of BI in logistics, analyses the connection to the SCOR model developed by Supply-Chain Council, and designs & describes basic dimensions and relationships in the dimensional model. The primary goal is to create a general BI model solution that respects the specifics of various types of Supply-Chains in order to serve as a theoretical framework. The resulting model links to existing models designed for the Supply-Chain Management such as SCOR, Balanced Scorecard etc. To fulfil the primary goal first it is necessary to identify the specifics of various types of supply-chains, define BI use case and requirements in logistics; and by incorporating these parameters and SCOR model the BI model solution will emerge. The biggest contribution is the fulfilment of the primary goal - the creation of BI solution reference model for Supply-Chain with specific needs according to suppliers, manufacturers, distributors and retailers. With the help of this model it should be easier to coordinate, clarify goals, activities and relationships of methods used in the pre-analytical stage and implementation of the BI technologies in the Supply-Chains.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to provide a positioning of business intelligence in a changing environment and proving its affected aspects. Put within company’s ongoing change process. The study wishes to harmonize the acceptance of a technological change. This is pursued by highlighting (selected) factors that generate an effect on the uncertainty of an adjustment. The study is conducted as to create a low cost as possible to enable businesses to achieve goals and visions straightforward.   This study provides guidelines in how a business intelligence system acts upon ongoing change in an organization. The phenomenon of change will be covered through an in-depth investigation of a company that is in the initiation and implementation phase of a BI system. By understanding the current thoughts and discussions of the personnel - and following how these requests are answered by the investment, a further discussion will be found within organizational change theory. This research gets support from an emergent, inductive and qualitative approach when discovering concepts and key variables that exist at the analyzed company. In this study I will identify factors associated with requests. Conclusively, variables of proactivity, duality, risk management and accesibility were found to be inharmonious factors for change. This realization was made possible through inductive research as well as through prior theory. The business intelligence brings a shared knowledge pool, acting as a great mediator for a firms change process.   Most business’ have an ocean of information. Virtually every organization keeps records of their transactions, customers and products (among many). Nursing all this information and becoming conscious of the data makes the user transmorph and/or advance to a position of command. The user and/or organization with the power is the one succeeding. If a company is able to exactly understand it’s customers, they have the ability to churn the profits better. Creating an ever better change process.

Business Intelligence (BI) continues to top the list of CIO priorities, investment in BI technologies continues to grow and organizations are becoming increasingly reliant on BI to help reduce costs and grow revenues. However, structured measurement and monitoring of the business value that can be attributed to BI investment remain elusive. This study used a multiple case study approach to examine how BI is adding value to organizations, what processes and methods are being followed for the evaluation of the business value that BI delivers as well as what approaches are being used to maximize the potential value that the organization's investment on BI could deliver.

Abstract:
Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) is an acronym of Gartner Inc. to describe systems that are intended to provide "Real-time access to critical business performance indicators to improve the speed and efficiency of business operations. BAM systems help enterprises improve their operational efficiency and increase the ability of understanding and responding to events that have a significant impact on their business processes. Despite the fact that most businesses today are in urgent need to improve their operating performance, BAM systems as a solution seams to don't approach. The reality is that many software vendors supplied new BAM systems solutions by simply adding new features to existing products. In addition, there are no formal standards to define which specific features of the BAM system should contain. Another problem is the lack of theoretical models to support comparative analysis between the different systems of BAM. The aim of my thesis is to contribute to the improvement of the existing theoretical basis for the use of Business Activities Monitoring (BAM) as part of BI solutions, by providing an understanding of the relationship between the needs of decision support systems in real time and current applications of systems BAM. This work provides evidence that the relationship between the Real-time Business Intelligence needs of enterprises and BAM solution is determined by the need to ensure that the BAM system deliver current Real-time information to enable BAM users, who are often operating managers directly responsible for business processes, effectively respond to referred alert, supplied by the BAM system. To increase users' ability to effectively respond to events generated by the BAM system depends primarily on two basic operational issues. First, it is necessary to ensure adequate response for BAM users, to ensure necessary actions associated with the event. Second, BAM user must be able to understand the nature of the problem associated with the event, to initiate the proper steps to resolve the problem. Here it shows that, apart from insufficient knowledge of the nature of problems, BAM system needs, beside generation alerts in very low latency, also add context to these alerts, to provide enough information for BAM users to understand the nature of the problem associated with the event.

Abstract:
The value of data is growing to an increasing extent. The increased amount of available data has enabled business intelligence to take great strides in development. Organizations use data in order to enhance parts or entire operations within the organization. Business intelligence supports organizations in the management of data and mainly to create decision support. However, business intelligence is a broad topic which can be affected by factors such as Big Data or Cloud computing and can be applied in different ways. Previous studies shows that only a few organizations have succeeded in increasing profitability after implementation of business intelligence. This study therefore aims to create a deeper understanding of how business intelligence is used within a telecommunications company to create decision support connected to enhancing business processes. The choice of industry and organization in this study is based on the fact that the industry is one of the most data-intensive industries. The thesis relates to previous research and theories. The previous research is used in order to understand the challenges as well as the benefits and future potential of the subject. The theories are used to understand various key factors such as information systems or the combination of business intelligence and Business Process Management.  The result of the essay is created from semi-structured interviews with respondents who work within a telecommunications company and contribute to confirming the theory and answering the questions.

In the last decades, the amount of medical imaging studies and associated metadata available has been rapidly increasing. These are mostly used to support medical diagnosis and treatment. Nonetheless, recent initiatives claim the usefulness of these studies to support research scenarios and to improve the medical institutions business practices. However, their continuous production, as well as the tremendous amount of associated data, make their analysis difficult by conventional workflows devised up until this point. Current medical imaging repositories contain not only the images themselves, but also a wide-range of valuable metadata. This creates an opportunity for the development of Business Intelligence and analytics techniques applied to this Big Data scenario. The exploration of such technologies has the potential of further increasing the efficiency and quality of the medical practice. This thesis developed a novel automated methodology to derive knowledge from multimodal medical imaging repositories that does not disrupt the regular medical practice. The developed methods enable the application of statistical analysis and business intelligence techniques directly on top of live institutional repositories. The resulting application is a Web-based solution that provides an extensive dashboard, including complete charting and reporting options, combined with data mining components. Furthermore, the system enables the operator to set a multitude of queries, filters and operands through the use of an intuitive graphical interface.

Due to the rapid growth of new technologies, the Business Intelligence (BI) market is growing as well that forces the corporations to adopt their offerings to the needs of the customer. Adoption of Business Intelligence system has become one of the most important technological and organizational innovations in modern organization that promote knowledge diffusion, and cornerstone of business decision making processes. Since the way of BI integrated and implemented is quite different among organizations, it is important to approach BI literature by adaption of BI application and its implementation, BI architects, and enabling factors in BI projects. Furthermore, we are also going to discuss how technological capabilities such as user access, data quality and the integration of BI with other systems in the firm, as well as organizational capabilities such as flexibility and risk management support, are essential for BI success, regardless of the decision environment. Last but not least, this paper will also discuss how the idea of BI has been built on the school of thought. We expect that results could create the value and input for enterprises that plan to implement a BI application in their organization.

Abstract:
The relational database model is probably the most frequently used database model today. It has its strengths, but it doesn’t perform very well with complex queries and analysis of very large sets of data. As computers have grown more potent, resulting in the possibility to store very large data volumes, the need for efficient analysis and processing of such data sets has emerged. The concept of Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) was developed to meet this need. The main OLAP component is the data cube, which is a multidimensional database model that with various techniques has accomplished an incredible speed-up of analysing and processing large data sets. A concept that is advancing in modern computing industry is Business Intelligence (BI), which is fully dependent upon OLAP cubes. The term refers to a set of tools used for multidimensional data analysis, with the main purpose to facilitate decision making. This thesis looks into the concept of BI, focusing on the OLAP technology and date cubes. Two different approaches to cubes are examined and compared; Multidimensiona lOnline Analytical Processing (MOLAP) and Relational Online Analytical Processing (ROLAP). As a practical part of the thesis, a BI project was implemented for the consulting company Sogeti Sverige AB. The aim of the project was to implement a prototype for easy access to, and visualisation of their internal economical data. There was no easy way for the consultants to view their reported data, such as how many hours they have been working every week, so the prototype was intended to propose a possible method. Finally, a performance study was conducted, including a small scale experiment comparing the performance of ROLAP, MOLAP and querying against the data warehouse. The results of the experiment indicates that ROLAP is generally the better choice for data cubing.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Business Intelligence is becoming more and more an essential element for a company’s planning, development and consistency. A company usually aims to predict and optimize the outcome of different decisions. In order to do that, it requires a tool that can perform scenario analysis or “what if” – analysis. These analyses can be performed with spreadsheets and today with the tools within business analysis being web-based, the purpose of the project is to combine a web-based spreadsheet with an analysis from a BI server. The BI server provides sample data. Should a combination be possible then a continuing goal would be to connect the BI server with a database and in that way provide the spreadsheet with data to perform “what if” – analysis. The results indicated that a combination between the web-based spreadsheet and the BI server was possible. However, a few alterations of the spreadsheet are still necessary in order for the combination to work as desired. Further developments of the product involve managing to adapt it to smartphones and tablets.

Abstract:
Business Intelligence (BI) has become a more important building block for many companies and an important aspect is that it is implemented correctly so that decision makers can make decisions based on facts rather than intuition. This data is needed for decision makers and other people in the management team and also be able to understand this data without any bigger issues. One way to avoid issues with the understanding of data is to visualize it into graphs to give a fast overview and to simplify analysis of data in a dashboard. To create said dashboards has been identified by earlies research to be problematic in the sense of the solution not contributing to the analytic capability that are desired. To be able to get any sort of benefit from the dashboard it is necessary that it is built correctly with usage and analysis in mind. This leads to the question that this study aims to answer: Which success factors contributes to successfully manage a BI-project as seen from a dashboard developers point of view? To investigate the issue a literature analysis together with a case study making use of interviews based on what is gathered from the literature analysis. The interviews will investigate the factors that dashboard developers has experienced themselves whilst implementing dashboards. The result from the study and with help from the data gathered via the interview and the analysis process a model could be formed showing the success factors that has an effect on dashboard oriented projects. The result came through by analyzing all of the answers from the respondents to identify reoccurring phrases and words that they mentioned. These phrases and words were put together into a table which eventually led to the finalized model.

Abstract:

Currently, there is a growing need for mobile Business Intelligence (BI) in the business world as the nature of work is changing and employees are more mobile than ever before. Mobile BI promises portability and pervasive access to BI, making it a topic high on many directors’ agendas; however the tangible and intangible benefits of mobile BI are still not well understood. Coupled with this, BI practitioners’ are sceptical about the real business value of delivering BI reports to mobile devices and how this undertaking can bring about organizational changes in the long run. As the field of mobile BI is still in its infancy, there is a lack of research which addresses the business value of mobile BI. The existing studies in this research area have been focused on adoption and implementation strategies. This study therefore attempts to address the gap by investigating how mobile BI can be utilised to enhance organizational performance and also contribute towards strategic business value. In light of this, an extensive literature review was conducted which revealed that mobile BI usage can result in benefits, such as improved employee performance management, organizational agility and customer satisfaction. A conceptual model was developed based on the literature and this model acted as the framework for investigating the research problem.

Abstract:
