Abstract:
Franchising is one of the most trustworthy strategic alliance formations to start or expand businesses. Like many other business formations, franchise businesses need sustainable and long-term running; these objectives can be reached by a proper relationship between partners – the franchisor and the franchisee – in the alliances. Both partners’ perspectives are valuable inputs to provide insight into understanding the sustainability of Indonesian franchise businesses. Furthermore, in any type of strategic alliances conflict is a risk that needs to be managed properly. This study aims to examine the relationships of determinants that influence franchise business sustainability. The determinants are risk management, trust, satisfaction, and sustainability. The study applies confirmatory factor analysis using structural equation modeling (SEM) AMOS software. Respondents in this study are franchisors and franchisees in the Indonesian retail and food and beverages (F&B) sectors, the study accommodates 204 respondents. Based on the analysis the study reveals that there is a positive relationship between risk management and satisfaction. Risk management also has a positive relationship with survivability; trust and satisfaction also have a positive relationship. Meanwhile, there is no relationship between satisfaction and survivability and the last relationship is between trust and survivability that has no positive relationship between the determinants. This study provides clearer insight to understand the relationships between determinants that influence franchise business survivability in Indonesia, especially based on both parties’ perspectives.

Abstract:
In this article, we introduce socioemotional selectivity theory (SEST) from psychology to the family business literature. Applying the theory to family businesses, we argue that a family business’s age influences whether it trusts family or professional business advisors most. Consistent with SEST, we find that business age relates to whether the family business emphasizes financial or socioemotional wealth more and that this wealth emphasis relates to whether family members or professional business advisors are trusted most. Based on these findings, we believe that SEST has much to offer to the study of family and nonfamily businesses.

Abstract:
Business transformation is essential to making the small-sized family business more sustainable. Technological and environmental changes have radically transformed the way of doing business. Business transformation into digital business is the key to success in these conditions. On the other hand, some of the previous studies of business transformation in several countries and industries show different empirical evidence. This study analyzes the transformation process in a small-sized family business. This is a case study of 15 small-sized family businesses with four different types of industry, with an interview and observation period of 12 months in 2019–2020. This study has formulated a business transformation model for a small-sized family business and presented the results of the transformation process carried out. The research results indicate that a business transformation model consists of several attributes and sub-attributes. Business transformation results indicate different processes and times between companies. In general, the transformation process can be grouped into the exploration, learning, and synchronizing stages. The industry with the fastest transformation process is the hospitality industry, while the manufacturing process for the industry takes a bit longer. The results of this study indicate that business transformation has improved the sustainability of a small-sized family business that is characterized by its ability to adapt to changing technology and environmental conditions.

Abstract:
This paper illustrates that small business managers in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom over-rely on the financially related performance measures in a manner inappropriate for handling the complexities and uncertainties in the business environment. It also shows that managers must address the development of new approaches to performance measurement to anticipate market trends and respond to changing customer needs. The paper suggests that small business success is dependent upon the ability of managers to understand the external environment and match this to the internal capabilities of the business. This implies that managers will have an external focus and possess the ability to continuously develop the small business's capabilities to meet the challenges created by the external environment. The paper concludes by advocating that performance measures should adapt as businesses are affected over time by different factors. We recommend a broad approach to performance measurement which incorporates tangible, non-tangible, financial and non-financial indicators.

Abstract:
It is difficult to think of a situation where businesses can do well without the use of modern office technology, in particular, items like computers and telephones. It is extremely difficult to determine if businesses depend on technology or if technology creates business opportunities. Modern office technology is correlated with positive change in management performance. Using a quantitative approach, 67 questionnaires were sent to middle and upper-level business managers in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Modern office technology makes significant difference in a workplace. Office technologies enhance performance and this can only be seen if the office is equipped with relevant and needed technologies. There is a strong correlation between the right use of office technologies and positive change in management performance. It is recommended that office managers still procure modern office technology to increase performance. The challenge is to harness this newly emerging technology for the benefit of the business. This study concludes that technological advancement has a positive effect on our quality of life and the way we do business, and this trend is expected to keep escalating

Abstract:
Purpose New small businesses are the cornerstone of many small rural communities. They provide needed products and services, new opportunities for employment, and general vitality. The economic impact these businesses have on their town and county are important indicators of an area’s success. The purpose of this paper is to examine newly started small businesses that are within three or four years of age or less, and examine factors that may have led to their success or failure. Here, sources of advice, means of financial support, and background experience of the firm’s founder have been found to be correlated with the business success. Design/methodology/approach The analysis using Probit regression yielded four models wherein female owners, family help with a business and Hispanic ownership had significant models predicting performance all of these were negative relationships. The factors correlated with business success as proposed are presented. Of course correlation does not imply causation, which means that the authors cannot be sure that a factor that is associated with business success will lead to business success. But, this is an important first step in determining whether there are significant differences between successful and unsuccessful businesses. Findings The findings showed that experience with previous business ownership had a distinct impact and the marketing efforts were also important for profitability. The other factors were not significant. A second phase to the analysis using Probit regression yielded four models wherein female owners, family help with a business and Hispanic ownership had significant models predicting performance all of these were negative relationships. This represents the difficulties that are encountered with these groups in garnering the support and financial means they need to succeed. It was also interesting that the use of a business plan did not help the businesses succeed. Research limitations/implications Using a Probit Regression and χ2 analysis of the data is the most appropriate and accurate analysis for a date set of this type. There is much more to be accomplished with rural entrepreneurship and the use of these techniques would be appropriate for this type of data. Practical implications Business plans are important for the business founder to predict potential costs and profits. In this study however, the authors did not find that having a business plan differentiated business’s performance. If it can be replicated, it will be important to find out what is unique about rural areas that lead to this finding. If business plans do not help, then what type of preplanning will help? If this finding is correct, business development agencies may wish to cut back resources devoted to writing a business plan, and devote them to other areas. Being a member of business network group also is not associated with business success. Social implications The growth of rural entrepreneurial businesses is well documented. These businesses provide many social impacts to the local community not only by providing products or services need but also by providing employment. This research is imperative to providing the best success plan for these businesses as the proliferate. Originality/value There has been very little research on rural entrepreneurship. This study takes a unique look at a rural community and the success or failure of their businesses over a one-year period when most small businesses succeed or fail. There is much more to be done on examining the tools they need to be successful.

Abstract:
Apart from starting, growing and/or sustaining a business, owner-managers in small firms have the responsibility to balance business goals and managerial priorities, with ownership control tendencies and family values (as in the case of the prolific family enterprise) in a fashion that can comfort all business stakeholders. Understanding the inter-relationship among owner-manager's leadership style, intra-organisational management systems, and business growth can enable us to develop insights into how small business leaders masterfully construct a management approach that is conducive to sustainable performance. This empirical paper draws evidence from a large-scale postal survey (5710 respondents) of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the UK and explores the association of small business managerial style and performance. Logistic regression analysis reveals that the managerial style of entrepreneurs is influenced by a series of demographic and situational factors. Moreover, owner-managed businesses characterised by delegation of authority appear to achieve higher growth in sales and operationalise in a more professional way. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications. The role of managerial style in interpreting business's growth performance will complement the leadership literature.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to identify the factors influencing the management of the activity of small businesses and to provide recommendations for its development through the resolution of crisis issues that prevent businesses from achieving strategic prospects and stable profits. The main factors for reducing the effectiveness of small businesses have been identified on the basis of the results of the questionnaire survey of one level of managers (small business directors), which should be taken into account in the formation of strategic management decisions and long-term development strategies. It is found that many of the factors are subject to managerial influence, which minimizes the negative impact on the performance of small business entities. The hypothesis that the main tool for stimulating small business development remains the state has confirmed with the help of research, but there is an urgent objective need to identify other factors that influence the activities of small businesses that impede their development and lead to closure. The study suggests that only a balance between the internal environment of small businesses and the regulatory framework of the state will allow them to work effectively in market conditions and provide the national economy with money. The authors present a position on the organization of a small business entity management system that reflects the links between processes and events in a market environment. The presented approach takes into account a number of elements of influence on a small business when forecasting its development in a strategic perspective. The results of the study showed that it is necessary to clearly identify the tasks at each stage of development of a small business entity, to form alternative models of its development by looking for ways to optimize activities and opportunities to avoid possible risks.

Purpose – This paper aims to review the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoint practical implications from cutting-edge research and case studies. Design/methodology/approach – This briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context. Findings – Learning is fundamental to success in any walk of life. Business is no different. Any organization lacking the motivation or capacity to acquire new knowledge will invariably get left behind. The merits of formal learning mechanisms have long been recognized. However, more informal approaches to learning are increasingly playing a major part in the workplace. The flexibility it offers is perhaps a major reason why it now allegedly accounts for up to 90 per cent of learning that takes place. Practical implications – The paper provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations. Originality/value – The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy-to digest format.

Abstract:
Since the 1990s, interest in the role of small and microenterprises (SMMEs) in economic development has garnered considerable attention throughout academic and practioner circles. Widely known for their potential to help stimulate economic growth and as a potential avenue for poverty alleviation, the purpose and promise of small businesses have been widely publicized. However, to date, little research exists that adequately documents the specific capital needs of very small businesses (those with less than 20 employees) and microenterprises (those with less than 5 employees) and their owners at specific points in a business's development and growth. Using data from the 1992 Characteristics of Business Owners Survey, the 2002 Survey of Business Owners and the 2003 Survey of Small Business Finances, we analyze the different types of firms in the United States, the amount of capital used by firms of different size and the sources of capital used by firms of different sizes to assess how capital needs and sources differ for those businesses with less than 20 employees. Paying particular attention to businesses owned by women and minorities, we argue that the path of SMMEs differs substantially from the typical path of larger small businesses. In addition, we highlight the implications of our findings and provide our policy recommendations to address them.

AbstractThis paper has taken an insight to the systemic models of family business from the open systems perspective. I focus on family business system models and on the subsystems content of family system and ownership system in family business context. The paper claim that the open system perspective on intercultural family businesses has both theoretical and empirical implications on family business research. Family businesses have many reasons, including family conflicts over money, nepotism leading to wrong management, and infighting over the succession of power from one generation to the other. Regulating the family’s roles as shareholders, board members, and managers is very important because it can help avoid these pitfalls. This paper will discuss the importance of the openness of the company through five the attributes of enduring family businesses: ownership, family, business and portfolio governance, wealth management, foundation. PurposeThe purpose of this study is to map the intellectual structure of the field of conflict management and the field of family business to the investigation of conflicts in family firms, with the aim of contributing to the further integration of knowledge between the two fields.Design/methodology/approachFamily conflicts and work–family balance issues also received a lot of attention, yet studies in conflict management still seem to overlook a thorough investigation of conflict in family businesses. Conflict is a major aspect of family businesses, which differs highly from non-family businesses, and offers an important research avenue for conflict management scholars to contribute to the investigation of major characteristics of organisations that constitute a large part of the value created in the world.FindingsThe results of a bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review show that studies concerning conflict in family business aggregate around three clusters: organisational conflicts; firm growth and conflicts; and family control, performance and conflicts. An interpretative framework is also developed to interpret how antecedents, conflicts and growth dynamics in family business influence performances. Findings show how family conflicts and work–family balance issues received a lot of attention, yet studies in conflict management still seem to miss a thorough investigation of conflict in family businesses.Originality/valueThis paper contributes to the field of conflict management and family business by providing a systematic analysis of knowledge and family firms. Abstract:
This article analyses small firm responses to a major economic downturn, based on empirical investigation in the UK and New Zealand. Despite differences in the timing and depth of the downturn, there is remarkable similarity in the sectoral composition of small enterprises and methods of financing in reported recession-related effects and business performance during 2008–2009. While recognising that the study focused on surviving businesses, in neither country did the downturn have a consistently negative impact on small businesses and in both countries a significant minority of firms surveyed performed well. The study provides much needed evidence on small businesse responses to major economic crisis. Conceptually it demonstrates that although many small firms are vulnerable to changes in circumstances over which they have no control, they show underlying resilience and a high level of adaptability and flexibility. Longitudinal follow-up is necessary to show how the types of adaptive behaviour observed impact on business performance.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to add to the current knowledge of how and why small businesses should engage in quality management (QM) by providing insights from small business owners who are committed advocates of QM. By so doing, to encourage small business owners to see that QM is right – and possible – for any small business wanting to improve performance. Design/methodology/approach Using an inductive method, semi-structured interviews followed a template of six open-ended questions. Study participants were ten owners of small family-owned business winners of a National Quality Award (National Housing Quality Award (NHQA)), making them industry leaders in applying QM. Data from these QM advocates are presented and discussed. Findings The cases reveal consistent encouragement for small businesses to engage in QM, with every owner certain that positive outcomes follow. Despite recognizing barriers to engagement, interviewees strongly feel the barriers are small relative to gains realized through QM. These QM advocates advise getting started by choosing one or a few QM tools and/or customizing tools rather than becoming overwhelmed by prospects of the complexity of doing QM to the exacting standards of various quality programs. Finally, they encourage small businesses to stay the course once started on QM. Research limitations/implications Limitations are that the paper relies on just ten case studies and these were taken from just one industry. While these limitations cannot be disputed, the rich data, interpretations, and opportunities for future research emerging from the inductive approach seem likely to resonate well beyond the particular industry involved here. Practical implications This paper speaks directly to small business owners by including many quotes from owners and summarizing themes from multiple interviews. The advice provided can be acted upon by any small business, with the opportunity of realizing improved business performance. Originality/value Few articles provide insights on the merits of QM for small businesses directly from interviews with small business owners. Here, the authors learn about the rationale for small businesses engaging in QM, are given thoughtful comments on how to get started, and told about the realities – including difficulties – of small business QM.

Although there is increasing reason to believe that the organizational goals of family businesses distinguish them from nonfamily businesses, there has been little development of these implications for marketing management. This study demonstrates the applicability of family business theory to marketing management by assessing the organizational buying behavior of high-end family businesses through a process of segmenting them by organizational goals that include family as well as business objectives. Results confirm that insights from the rapidly developing body of knowledge in the family business field have relevance to providers who have targeted the family business market.

Abstract:
During pandemic and economic crises, business units are under constant pressure and face many challenges to find solutions for. Family businesses form a significant segment of the business sector. Competition and the current crisis force businesses to find solutions for sustainable entrepreneurship. Family businesses are gradually consolidating their position in the business environment, especially by introducing a personal approach to the customer (pro-customer orientation) and innovative activities. The concept of innovative marketing (INMARK) represents businesses' opportunity to establish themselves on the market more successfully than their competitors. This work aimed to verify the possibility of applying the concept of INMARK in the segment of small and medium-sized enterprises of family type as an innovative form of marketing management during the crisis. In addition to theoretical approaches, we rely on empirical data obtained by quantitative research in the business environment. In methodological terms, we applied hypothesis testing. As a part of the applied methodology, we verified the applicability of the INMARK concept in the real business environment. Based on the research results obtained, we can conclude that the pillars of the INMARK concept (product innovation, active application of marketing activities) have a positive response among the representatives of the younger generation of family business management, which can contribute to the successful management of these specific business units.

In the hospitality industry, customers are seen as the key driving a business’s survival and success. The industry is therefore highly competitive and much more aware of the provision of quality service to meet customer expectations. Since hotel businesses are providing similar superior facilities among competitors in the market, service quality has been considered as the first priority and essential part of the organisational culture, making today’s businesses more concerned with delighting their customers than simply satisfying them [1]. Consequently, Total Quality Management (TQM) is becoming a widely used business management strategy within the hospitality industry. The intent of this essay focuses on the issue of service quality with the selected hotel - The Portman Ritz Carlton, Shanghai. It will first introduce TQM theory and then discuss how the approach helps to generate and maintain high quality service to achieve “customer delight”.

The study collected data from a randomly selected sample of 200 SMMEs and used WARP PLS software to analyse data. The results indicated that five factors, namely “finance”, “characteristics of entrepreneurs”, “location of business”, “government support”, as well as “products and services” were positively related to business performance. In contrast to other studies, this study found that owners’ personal funds and their proper management played a key role in the performance of businesses. This has a major implication for government support agencies that provide funding opportunities.

Abstract:
Purpose Prior research indicates that family businesses have fewer management control practices in place and are more likely to have non-economic goals for their firm. Further, researchers in this domain contend that female-controlled businesses tend to underperform compared to male-controlled businesses. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the performance effects of management controls and goals for the business across both male and female-controlled farm and rural family businesses. Design/methodology/approach The data used in the analyses are from the 2012 Intergenerational Farm and Non-Farm Family Business Survey. The sample comprises 576 small- and medium-sized rural family businesses. The authors used probit analysis to model both family business objective and subjective success for women and men. Findings The results suggest that female-controlled farm and rural family businesses do not underperform their male counterparts in terms of objective or subjective assessments of performance. The results do indicate, however, that strategic management via management control practices within the firm influence objective and subjective performance differently across male and female-controlled farm and rural family businesses. Originality/value The results provide three primary contributions to the family business literature. First, the authors determined that strategic management practices via management control mechanisms, as well as the monitoring of managers, are of significance to the objective performance (i.e. gross income) of both men and women-controlled farm and rural family businesses. Second, the authors found that communicating economic vs non-economic goals do not influence satisfaction with the firm’s performance, but do influence the probability of success for female-controlled family businesses. Finally, the authors find that when we compare male and female-controlled businesses in the same industry, while controlling for family and business factors, men and women do not differ in a statistical sense in objective or subjective performance.

Social capital is considered at different levels: micro for human capital and macro for social networks. It concludes that although both levels of social capital influence credit choices of household businesses, the micro level of social capital plays an important role in improving the household business’s growth, including asset and income growth. The study develops a broader view about the use of resources and financing choices in household businesses in Vietnam. Accordingly, it highlights the importance of social capital from multiple aspects — the household business itself, human capital, social networks and government — on the development of Vietnamese household businesses.

Abstract:
Mobile technology is fast becoming an indispensable part of consumers’ lives and an essential business tool in improving productivity, streamlining business processes and remaining competitive. The mobile revolution is transforming business operations, but the pervasive nature of mobile technology also introduces new and significant risks into all areas of the businesses. In most businesses, however, the governance of mobile technology and its related risks is often disjointed and implemented in an ad hoc manner, resulting in all risks not being addressed. This lack of appropriate governance policies and procedures is a direct consequence of a lack of understanding of the technology and the speed at which new technologies are developed and adopted. If the risks are not addressed in a comprehensive manner, it could have severe consequences for a business. The objective of this research is to address this problem by using an appropriate control framework, Control Objectives for Information Technology (COBIT), to identify a comprehensive set of internal controls to address mobile technology risks at a governance, management and operational level. The research proposes a comprehensive set of internal controls which can be used by those charged with governance to manage each significant risk arising from the implementation of mobile technology.

In the process of small business establishment and development, it is very important to understand both the financial needs of entrepreneurs and the main obstacles and difficulties arising in the way of financing. Alternative sources of financial support, along with traditional ones, create opportunities to increase funds, but the solution to the issue of their attraction should be based on modern effective methods and decision- making technologies. The article uses the decision tree method to determine the optimal alternative to financial support of small business at the early stages of the life cycle. The results highlight the importance of alternative source of resources for small business entities, namely business angels’ means. The empirical and statistical analysis confirms that access to alternative sources of financing for small businesses in EU countries is improving, while in Ukraine, informal financing is a rather new and underdeveloped area. Based on the analysis of the advantages of using the business angels’ funds, it was concluded that they need to implement their potential in small business of Ukraine. The results show that the decision tree method is an effective tool for deciding on the prioritization of a financial alternative to the small business, and is characterized by ease of use, forecast precision and problems solution novelty.

Abstract:
The paper focuses on the need for enhancing small business development as a mandatory component of a market-based economic system. A thorough comprehensive analysis has been performed to reveal the characteristic features of modern entrepreneurship, providing insights into small business management basics in terms of the criteria of economic security and the enterprise life cycle. To solve the research problem set, the following research methods were employed: a method of abstract logic (to detect regularities of processes, phenomena and trends in the development of small businesses) and a monographic method (to study the organizational and management principles of small business). Recommendations and tips for managing small businesses are offered taking into consideration a set of criteria and economic security indicators for small enterprises. The key criteria for small business economic security refer to its development capacity; depreciation of physical facilities and resources; financial and economic performance indicators; the crime rate as to business entities; the system viability to ensure the appropriate level of commercial confidentiality as well as property and private safety of businesses. It is proved that any life cycle stage of a small business development should involve a range of clear, consistent and coordinated management actions to implement the business goals. Evidence has been provided that to prevent bankruptcy and small business liquidation at any stage of its life cycle it is critical to implement the effective management paradigm which will mitigate the effects of external environment threats and maintain the optimum life cycle development of small businesses. It is argued that a correct choice of strategic guidance promotes the sustainable development of small businesses, enhances their economic security, assures products and services competitiveness, etc.
