Abstract:
Companies are more frequently seen shifting their focus from technological innovation towards business model innovation. One efficient option for business model innovation is to learn from existing solutions, i.e., business model patterns. However, the various understandings of the business model pattern concept are often confusing and contradictory, with the available collections incomplete, overlapping, and inconsistently structured. Therefore, the rich body of literature on business model patterns has not yet reached its full potential for both practical application as well as theoretic advancement. To help remedy this, we conduct an exhaustive review, filter for duplicates, and structure the patterns along several dimensions by applying a rigorous taxonomy-building approach. The resulting business model pattern database allows for navigation to the relevant set of patterns for a specific impact on a company’s business model. It can be used for systematic business model innovation, which we illustrate via a simplified case study.

Abstract:
This article introduces the “Sustainable Business Model Design” (SBMD) framework, an integrative methodology that synthesises sustainable business model theory with Alexandrian pattern theory. Emphasising a pragmatic interpretation of design as transformative action, the framework’s foundations are explored, seeking to consolidate the theoretical underpinnings guiding SBMD and elucidate its principal conceptual components. The article further delves into the practical application of the framework as a tool for problem-solving and idea generation. It concludes with a discussion of analogical reasoning and conceptual combination, shedding light on the creativity-enhancing efficacy of SBMD patterns. Additionally, the article is a succinct primer for business designers interested in the practical utilisation of SBMD, particularly within contexts such as sustainability innovation and ESG strategy workshops.

Abstract:
Purpose Patterns have proven to be useful for documenting general reusable solutions to a commonly occurring problem. In recent years, several different business process management (BPM)-related patterns have been published. Despite the large number of publications on this subject, there is no work that provides a comprehensive overview and categorization of the published business process model patterns. The purpose of this paper is to close this gap by providing a taxonomy of patterns as well as a classification of 89 research works. Design/methodology/approach The authors analyzed 280 research articles following a structured iterative procedure inspired by the method for taxonomy development from Nickerson et al. (2013). Using deductive and inductive reasoning processes embedded in concurrent as well as joint research activities, the authors created a taxonomy of patterns as well as a classification of 89 research works. Findings In general, the findings extend the current understanding of BPM patterns. The authors identify pattern categories that are highly populated with research works as well as categories that have received far less attention such as risk and security, the ecological perspective and process architecture. Further, the analysis shows that there is not yet an overarching pattern language for business process model patterns. The insights can be used as starting point for developing such a pattern language. Originality/value Up to now, no comprehensive pattern taxonomy and research classification exists. The taxonomy and classification are useful for searching pattern works which is also supported by an accompanying website complementing the work. In regard to future research and publications on patterns, the authors derive recommendations regarding the content and structure of pattern publications.

Abstract:
PurposeThe authors use the extension mechanism provided by the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) to define roles, which allows roles to be fully aligned with the BPMN standard. The authors describe how a pattern can be defined in terms of roles and present the formal semantics of pattern realization and refinement to support systematic reuse of patterns in business process development.Design/methodology/approachIt is widely agreed that the use of business process patterns improves the efficiency and quality of business process development. However, few techniques are available to describe business process patterns at an appropriate level of abstraction to facilitate the reuse of patterns. To address this, this paper presents the role-based Business Process Model and Notation (R-BPMN), an extension of BPMN for abstract modeling of business process patterns based on a novel notion of role.FindingsThe authors apply R-BPMN in case studies for pattern realization and refinement and discuss tool support via an existing tool. The case studies demonstrate the practical benefits of R-BPMN in capturing pattern variability and facilitating pattern reuse.Practical implicationsThe findings imply a potential impact of R-BPMN on practical benefits when it is supported at the metamodel level in tool development.Originality/valueThis study addresses the need for abstract modeling of process patterns at the metamodel level, which facilitates the formalization of pattern variability and tool development to support various realizations of process patterns at the model level.

Abstract:
The partnership in the broiler farming business triggers an increase in the broiler population. It motivates prospective breeders to do broiler farming due to the availability of assistance in terms of capital, management, as well as marketing. However, many prospective breeders believe the rumors that the partnership pattern is not that attractive. The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in the costs and income of the broiler farming business between the independent and partnership pattern business. The study also examined the differences in the feasibility of both patterns in the broiler farming business in Jombok Village, Pule District, Trenggalek Regency. This research utilized a case study method. From the study results, it was known that there was a significant difference in the cost of broiler farming business of both patterns. The cost of broiler farming of the partnership pattern was higher than of the independent pattern. The income of broiler farming of the partnership pattern tended to be smaller than the independent pattern. However, the average return from the partnership pattern broiler business was more significant than the independent pattern. Although the two patterns of broiler farming were feasible, the revenue and cost ratio in the independent broiler farming business was greater than that of the partnership broiler business. It can be concluded that from an economic point of view, broiler farming with an independent pattern was more profitable than a partnership pattern.

Abstract:
While several approaches exist for modeling goals and business processes in organizations, the relationships between these two views are often not well defined. This inhibits the effective reuse of available knowledge in models. This thesis aims to address this issue through the introduction of a Goal-oriented Pattern Family (GoPF) framework that helps constructing business process models from organization goals while expanding these goals, establishing traceability relationships between the goal and process views, and improving reusability. Methods for extracting domain knowledge as patterns, which are composed of goal model building blocks, process model building blocks, and their relationships, and for maintaining the patterns over time are also presented. The GoPF framework provides the infrastructure for defining pattern families, i.e., collections of related patterns for particular domains. The foundation of GoPF is formalized as a profile of the User Requirements Notation, a standard modeling language that supports goals, scenarios, and links between them. A method for the use of GoPF is defined and then illustrated through a case study that targets the improvement of patient safety in healthcare organizations. The framework and the extraction/maintenance methods are also validated against another case study involving aviation security in a regulatory environment. The GoPF framework is expected to have a positive impact on the scientific community through the formalization, evolution, and reuse of patterns in domain-specific business domains. From an industrial viewpoint, this framework will also help intermediary organizations (such as consulting firms) who are required to repeatedly create and document goal and process models for other organizations in their business domain.

Abstract:
The Digitized Ecosystem of Tourism in Europe: Current Trends and Implications”.

Abstract:
Within this context, the workflow technology has shown to be very effective, mainly in the business process automation. However, as it is an emergent technology and in constant evolution, workflow presents some limitations. Though several workflow (meta) models have been proposed in recent years, their sub-models for organizational structure aspects representation show limited power of expression. On the other hand, most of the current workflow modeling tools do not provide functionalities that enable users to define, query, and reuse workflow patterns properly. One of the main problems is the non-availability of a consolidated mapping between patterns based on recurrent functions found in business processes (e.g., request for activity execution, notification, decision, or approval) and workflow (meta) models or workflow modeling tools. Relying on these problems, the first contribution of this thesis is a Transactional Metamodel of Business Process (TMBP) with support to organizational structure aspects. The metamodel makes feasible to create business (sub-)processes from the reuse of organizational –based workflow patterns. An additional feature of TMBP supports the generation of business (sub-)processes through the Business Process Execution Language for Web Services (BPEL4WS). Other important contribution of this thesis is a set of workflow patterns represented as block activity patterns. Each pattern refers to a recurrent business function frequently found in business processes. The mining of 190 workflow processes of more than 10 different organizations has evidenced the existence of the set of workflow patterns with high support in the workflow processes analyzed. Moreover, it became clear through this study that the set of patterns is both necessary and enough to design all 190 processes that were investigated. As a consequence of the mining process, a set of association rules was identified too. The rules not only help to better define specific workflow patterns, but also combine them with existent control flow patterns. These rules can be useful for building more complex workflows.

Abstract:
Care process monitoring is important in healthcare domains to provide precise and detailed analytics on patients, providers, and resources participating in a care process and their status. These analytics are used to keep track of whether the quality of care goals set by healthcare organizations are satisfied and ensure that legislative and organizational guidelines are followed. The complexity of care process monitoring can vary depending on whether the care process takes place in a hospital or out in the community, and it can vary depending on the complexity of the information technology infrastructure that is in place to support the care process. A Care Process Monitoring Application (CPMA) is a software application which collects and integrates data from various sources while a care process is being provided, in order to provide performance reporting of metrics that are used to measure how well the performance goals and guidelines for the care process are being met. In our research, we have studied how CPMAs are built in order to improve the quality of their engineering. The significant challenge in this context is how to engineer a CPMA so that the engineering process is repeatable, produces a CPMA of consistent high quality, and requires less time, less effort and less complexity. This thesis proposes an application framework for care process monitoring that collects and integrates events from event sources, maintains the individual and aggregate states of the care process and populates a metrics data mart to support performance reporting. Our contributions are the following: a state-based application meta-model of care process monitoring, a care process monitoring architectural pattern, and finally, a behavior driven development methodology for CPMAs based on our meta-model and architectural pattern. Our results are validated through three different case studies in which we collaborated with two different health care organizations to build and deploy CPMAs for two different care processes (one hospital-based, the other community-based) in collaboration with healthcare clinicians and researchers.

Abstract:
Abstract This book explores the storied spaces and narrative archetypes of a secondary business service, using facilities management (FM) as an example of non-core and increasingly outsourced organizational activities. The centrepiece is the development of artificial folklore, a research approach combining organizational analysis, storytelling, and folklore for interpretive purposes. An in-depth exploration of FM is developed; one exploring people, place, and process in a project revealing elements of organizational liminality as well as professional enchantment. This leads to concentration on the storytelling nature of secondary services, specifically utilizing the genre of fairytales to investigate narrative patterns within FM’s cultural environment. In the process, three modes of FM delivery are identified: consultancy provision, service provision, and in-house provision; modes which are narratively demarcated as professionals tell both deconstructed and reconstructed tales about their work. What is revealed is a recognized understanding across the three provider groups of their role as the ‘necessary evil’ of business organization, and notably as represented—in folkloric terms—by the shadow archetype. Ultimately, the artificial folklore approach developed in this book produces ghostwritten tales for each of the main FM provider streams; tales which reflect symbolically, the consultancy provider’s Hansel and Gretel, the service provider’s Goldilocks, and the in-house provider’s Cinderella organizational motifs. The outcome of this inquiry is a new diagnostic approach to the study of management, work, and organization—one linking elements of social theory, narrative analysis, and the business imaginary.

Abstract:
A framework based on a pattern language for Business Resource Management is under construction to be used for developing systems in the information systems domain. Business resources include assets and services, as products and repairs. By management we mean their trade, rental and maintenance. A pattern language has been developed for aiding in the analysis of systems for business resource management. It includes fourteen patterns for identifying the resource, quantifying it, renting, trading and maintaining it, reserve it, quote the trade, quote the maintenance, check its delivery, allowing several items to be dealt with in the same transaction, paying for the transaction, identifying the transaction executor, and identifying maintenance tasks and parts. One of the patterns is included, corresponding to trading the resource. A class model shows its structure (classes and relationships), and an application example shows the roles played by each participant class. An example of the pattern language usage for a car repair shop system is presented, together with an object model that shows the patterns used and the roles played by their participant classes. The present development stage of the framework is mentioned.

Dunlop, Steven R., Satish Ukkusuri, Dutt J. Thakkar, et al. Economic Effect of Active Transportation Features and the Association Between the Healthcare Industry and Transportation. Purdue University, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5703/1288284317655.

Full text
Abstract:
The goal of this project is to help INDOT determine the economic effects of active transportation features, the impact of transportation infrastructure on the healthcare industry, and to explore a potential relationship between active transportation and healthcare. To capture the details thoroughly, the analysis was done at a macro and micro level. We identified relevant attributes based on existing studies and captured the county-level data for these attributes from public sources. A regression analysis was performed at the macro-level to understand relationships and trends. In the micro-view, the analysis aimed to investigate the impact of active transportation investments on business growth and the impact of transportation investments on trip patterns and healthcare growth at a granular level of ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs). Large-scale datasets were analyzed to extract key metrics, which were tested for changes due to investments in the region. A Difference in Differences (DID) model was used to analyze causal effects, and trends of individual ZCTAs were analyzed against their corresponding demographics. Insights were developed and recommendations were made to INDOT based on the analysis regarding macro trends and factors impacting the transportation features. Practical recommendations for transportation investments and their corresponding effects were provided to INDOT based on the micro analyses.

Tawfik, Aly, and Utsav Shah. Analysis of Freight Movements in the San Joaquin Valley. Mineta Transportation Institute, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2023.2131.

Full text
Abstract:
Freight transportation plays a primary role in supply chains, costs, and availability of goods and is a major part of the economy. This study identifies, assesses, and utilizes different data sources to uncover and understand the patterns and movements of different types of freight in the San Joaquin Valley’s (SJV's) different counties. The San Joaquin Valley region consists of eight counties: San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Kings, and Tulare. This research explored some major datasets with freight information, such as Global Trade Atlas (GTA), Port Imports and Exports Reporting Systems (PIERS), and Streetlight data insights for the year 2019 (to explore movements of freight pre-COVID-19). The primary software programs used for this analysis include MS Excel, MS Access, ArcGIS, and StreetLight InSight. This research investigated all modes of freight transportation (air, water, rail, and road) for domestic and international trade. This research’s findings demonstrate the strengths and limitations of different data sources for understanding freight movements in the San Joaquin Valley. These findings should be valuable for different government and private agencies for various use cases such as developing transportation infrastructure, freight business, and environment assessments.

Full text
Abstract:
The need to control the risk that accompanies businesses in their day- to-day operations, and at the same time changing economic conditions make risk management an almost indispensable element of economic life. Selection of the main aspects of the selected phases of the risk management process: risk identification and risk assessment are related to their direct relationship with the subject matter (risk identification to be managed; risk analysis leading to the establishment of a risk hierarchy, and, consequently, the definition of risk control’ methods) and its purpose (bringing the risk to acceptable level). It is impossible to identify the basic patterns of development of the oil and gas industry without exploring the relationship between economic processes and enterprise risks. The latter are subject to simulation, and based on models it is possible to determine with certain probability whether there have been qualitative and quantitative changes in the processes, in their mutual influence on each other, etc. The work is devoted to exploring the possibilities of applying the Granger test to examine the causal relationship between the risks and obligations of oil and gas companies. The analysis is based on statistical tests and the use of linear regression models.

Journeay, M., J. Z. K. Yip, C. L. Wagner, P. LeSueur, and T. Hobbs. Social vulnerability to natural hazards in Canada. Natural Resources Canada/CMSS/Information Management, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.4095/330295.

Full text
Abstract:
While we are exposed to the physical effects of natural hazard processes, certain groups within a community often bear a disproportionate share of the negative consequences when a disaster strikes. This study addresses questions of why some places and population groups in Canada are more vulnerable to natural hazard processes than others, who is most likely to bear the greatest burden of risk within a given community or region, and what are the underlying factors that disproportionally affect the capacities of individuals and groups to withstand, cope with, and recover from the impacts and downstream consequences of a disaster. Our assessment of social vulnerability is based on principles and analytic methods established as part of the Hazards of Place model (Hewitt et al., 1971; Cutter, 1996), and a corresponding framework of indicators derived from demographic information compiled as part of the 2016 national census. Social determinants of hazard threat are evaluated in the context of backbone patterns that are associated with different types of human settlement (i.e., metropolitan, rural, and remote), and more detailed patterns of land use that reflect physical characteristics of the built environment and related functions that support the day-to-day needs of residents and businesses at the community level. Underlying factors that contribute to regional patterns of social vulnerability are evaluated through the lens of family structure and level of community connectedness (social capital); the ability of individuals and groups to take actions on their own to manage the outcomes of unexpected hazard events (autonomy); shelter conditions that will influence the relative degree of household displacement and reliance on emergency services (housing); and the economic means to sustain the requirements of day-to-day living (e.g., shelter, food, water, basic services) during periods of disruption that can affect employment and other sources of income (financial agency). Results of this study build on and contribute to ongoing research and development efforts within Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to better understand the social and physical determinants of natural hazard risk in support of emergency management and broader dimensions of disaster resilience planning that are undertaken at a community level. Analytic methods and results described in this study are made available as part of an Open Source platform and provide a base of evidence that will be relevant to emergency planners, local authorities and supporting organizations responsible for managing the immediate physical impacts of natural hazard events in Canada, and planners responsible for the integration of disaster resilience principles into the broader context of sustainable land use and community development at the municipal level.

Untold stories from the Himalaya: 20 solutions for waste and water management. International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), 2025. https://doi.org/10.53055/icimod.1050.

Full text
Abstract:
The Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH), a region of immense natural beauty and ecological significance spans an area of 595,000 km² across the eight countries. It is the ‘water tower of Asia’ with the headwaters of 10 major river systems supporting about 1.9 billion people. However, the region is facing severe challenges due to rapid and unplanned urbanisation, climate change and environmental degradation. Rapid glacier retreat in a warming climate threatens future water supplies while concretised development will further disrupt hydrological patterns and reduce groundwater recharge leading to water scarcity and food insecurity. Increased population and rapid urbanisation also bring challenges on waste and sanitation services hampering the health of ecosystems and people. The Parvat Manthan Forum aims to build a collaborative and responsive platform that provides support to hill towns and cities in engaging with each other and central governments. The forum seeks to help these regions become more inclusive, sustainable, and climate-resilient in urban water and sanitation management. Its purpose is to bring together Himalayan towns and cities to act collectively toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDGs 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). This initiative aligns with the UN's Decade for Action to achieve the SDGs, as well as the explicit recognition of the "human right to a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment" at COP27. Under the Parvat Manthan forum, the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), in collaboration with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and supported by the Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association - South Asia (BORDA-SA) and the Integrated Mountain Initiative (IMI), is publishing the compendium Untold stories from the Himalaya: 20 solutions for water and waste management. This compendium, ideated by NIUA, focuses on integrated water and waste management solutions specifically tailored for mountain regions. It documents best practices, innovative solutions— including technological advancements, business models, and community-driven actions—and initiatives from hill towns and cities in Bhutan, India’s Himalayan states, and Nepal. The primary aim is to showcase scalable solutions addressing key water and waste management challenges that can be replicated in other mountain towns and cities facing similar issues. Over 80 submissions were received through an open call, contributed by development organisations, independent professionals, private sector experts, think tanks, community-based organisations, and others involved in sustainable Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) solutions in mountainous areas. The compendium highlights 20 innovative solutions that have been screened and implemented to address water and waste management challenges in the mountainous context. These solutions provide strategic recommendations for: 1. Sustainable urban planning that embraces inclusive and resilient practices tailored to the unique needs of mountainous regions. 2. Development of climate-resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding natural disasters and climate impacts to ensure long-term sustainability. 3. Encouragement of community ownership and participation in environmental management and disaster risk reduction. 4. Formulation of mountain-specific policies and allocation of resources to support sustainable development in the region. This compendium serves as a knowledge repository, offering practical and innovative solutions that can be scaled and replicated across the region. It is hoped that this resource will inspire and guide policymakers, practitioners, and local communities in building a more resilient and sustainable future for the Himalayas.
