Abstract:
Reporting patient states is considered an important part of care process monitoring in the hospital to efficiently monitor how well the health care system is performing. Monitoring care processes with enough fine-grained detail to precisely track wait states and service states in order to reduce wait times and improve their quality of care are challenging. Business Process Management (BPM) technology is used to bring care processes online, but there is no clear methodology on how to integrate performance management into BPM tools in a systematic matter that is effective, and minimizes complications and development costs. This thesis proposes a BPM methodology for care process monitoring that structures how to integrate performance monitoring into BPM. The major contribution of this thesis includes a generic methodology for care processes monitoring that describes how to structure and instrument a business process model for systematic care process monitoring which includes support for handoff points between organizations where many wait-time bottlenecks occur. It also includes a prototype implementation based on an existing case study based on a real cardiology care process from an Ontario hospital. Our results are evaluated using three different prototypes based on this same care process. The research methodology for the thesis is based on Design-Science research.

Abstract:
Business Process Management Systems (BPMS) are attracting much attention these days as core tools for process management. A BPMS consists of several modules including Business Activity Monitoring (BAM), which evaluates the performance of processes. Although measuring the performance of business processes is based on organizational goals and the impact of processes on such goals is an important aspect of the process evaluation, most of the existing BPMS do not offer appropriate capabilities. Several process improvements and quality methodologies have also been around for some time. Most of them, however, are based on statistical and management tools that are not integrated with current technologies including BPMS. In other words, the management and quality disciplines have not yet evolved to take full advantage of current technologies that can enhance process improvement efforts. One of the pitfalls here is the failure to use the information generated by different information systems dispersed across the organization to evaluate the impact of processes on their goals. In this thesis, we use the User Requirements Notation (URN) in a methodology for evaluating business processes against organizational goals. Although URN enables the modeling of processes and goals, its process monitoring capabilities need enhancements and we will address this issue by extending URN. In addition, we propose a methodology that exploits the new capabilities of URN for process analysis and improvement. Unlike other quality methodologies, the methodology and supporting tool proposed are capable of using different sources of information to measure the performance of modeled processes and evaluate their impact on the goal models. The new capabilities and their benefits are illustrated through examples from the healthcare domain.

Abstract:
Nowadays, business processes allow more automation of tasks and complex interconnections within the same system and across different systems, which is particularly facilitated by the emergence of Web services. In this context, the tasks of specifying and checking compliance at runtime become particularly challenging. In this thesis, our goal is twofold: monitoring and security in the context of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). Thus, we proposed a view-based monitoring approach and a framework that target monitoring of business process compliance at runtime. Our monitoring framework aims to offer an easy way to specify properties to be monitored and to facilitate its integration with SOA based environments. Thus, we have developed a new monitoring language called BPath, which is an XPath-based language that offers among others, the ability to express and to check temporal and hybrid logic properties at runtime, making the execution of business processes visible by expressing and evaluating quantitative indicators, in order to detect any compliance violation at runtime. A specific compliance monitoring concern in SOA based environment is security, which is also an important aspect for companies willing to give access to some of their resources over the Web. Thus, we proposed a domain specific language (DSL) based architecture for ensuring security in SOA environments. We particularly focused on access control by proposing a graphical language to facilitate the specification and generation of access control policies. Our approaches are implemented and integrated within a complete end to end compliance framework developed within the COMPAS project

Abstract:
This thesis explores data-driven, predictive approaches to monitor business process performance. These approaches allow process stakeholders to prevent or mitigate potential performance issues or compliance violations in real time, as early as possible. To help users understand the rationale for the predictions and build trust in them, the thesis proposes two techniques for explainable predictive process monitoring: one based on deep learning, the other driven by process models. This is achieved by decomposing a prediction into its elementary components. The techniques are compared against state-of-the-art baselines and a trade-off between accuracy and explainability of the predictions is evaluated.

Abstract:
Context: Organizations strive to improve their business processes, and adaptive business processes have recently attracted much attention in that context. However, much research in that area has a narrow focus and does not consider a comprehensive view of the organization and its goals. In addition, Business Intelligence-based monitoring methods are useful for business process improvement but they often present information in a format that is not entirely suited for decision making. Objectives: The main objectives of this thesis are to provide: • A framework to model goals, processes, performance, situations, and improvement patterns using one modeling notation, in an iterative and incremental manner; • A method for the modeling and analysis of cause-effect relationships between indicators used to measure goal satisfaction; and • A technique allowing the detection of undesirable, sub-optimal conditions and the application of improvement patterns to the context Method: We develop an iterative framework based on the User Requirements Notation (URN) for modeling, monitoring and improving business organizations and their business processes. In addition, we introduce a formula-based evaluation algorithm allowing better analysis of the relationships between the business performance model elements (namely indicators). Furthermore, we use a profiled version of the Aspect-oriented URN (AoURN) with extensions (Business Process Pattern profile), for detecting undesirable conditions and for business process adaptation. We validate the novelty and feasibility of our approach by performing a systematic literature review, by assessing it against Zellner’ mandatory elements of a method, by developing tool support, by performing a pilot experiment and by using real-life examples from different sectors (healthcare and retail). Results: The two examples show that through the framework’s iterative approach, organizations at different levels of maturity in their business improvement journey can benefit from the framework. Furthermore, our systematic literature review shows that although there are existing works that enable our vision, most of them have a narrow focus and do not cover the three organization views that are of interest in this research. AoURN allows analysts to find repeated patterns in a context and bundle goal, performance and process models as a self-contained unit. AoURN hence enables the modeling of complex circumstances together with analysis techniques for what-if analysis and process adaptation, all using a unified and integrated modeling language. Finally, the pilot experiment suggests that, with some level of documentation and training, users who are already familiar with URN can use the profiled AoURN provided in this thesis as well as the discussed improvement patterns.

Abstract:
A business process is a defined collection of linked structured tasks, activities, and decisions performed together to produce a desired set of results in order to achieve business goals on behalf of the organization. Companies are increasingly moving their business processes online using Business Process Management (BPM) tools and technologies. With BPM, online business processes are defined by an explicit business process model that flexibly combines and orchestrates forms delivered through a web browser to integrate tasks performed by people, and web services accessible through Internet protocols to integrate tasks performed by software. Often the approach to quality assurance for online business processes is similar to what would be done with any other web application. This is insufficient since it only provides rudimentary verification of single user behavior whereas the orchestration of tasks across many users and software systems can be quite complex. As well, a simple web application testing approach does not leverage the defined model for a business process to ensure consistency, completeness and enable automation. Nor will such an approach validate that a business process is contributing towards the achievement of business goals. A more systematic approach is required. This thesis proposes a quality assurance framework to provide a repeatable, systematic, cost-efficient approach to quality assurance for BPM. A prototype framework was implemented and evaluated using two case studies, including one case study that was developed in collaboration with a local hospital to support a business process for cancer care assessment.

Abstract:
Long wait times are a global issue in the healthcare sector, particularly in Canada. Despite numerous research findings on wait time management, the issue persists. This is partly because for a given hospital, the data required to conduct wait times analysis is currently scattered across various information systems. Moreover, such data is usually not accurate (because of possible human errors), imprecise and late. The whole situation contributes to the current state of wait times. This thesis proposes a location-aware business process management system for real-time care process monitoring. More precisely, the system enables an improved visibility of process execution by gathering, as processes execute, accurate and granular process information including wait time measurements. The major contributions of this thesis include an architecture for the system, a prototype taking advantages of commercial real-time location system combined with a business process management system to accurately measure wait times, as well as a case study based on a real cardiology process from an Ontario hospital.

Abstract:
Process monitoring aims to provide transparency over operational aspects of a business process. In practice, it is a challenge that traces of business process executions span across a number of diverse systems. It is cumbersome manual engineering work to identify which attributes in unstructured event data can serve as case and activity identifiers for extracting and monitoring the business process. Approaches from literature assume that these identifiers are known a priori and data is readily available in formats like eXtensible Event Stream (XES). However, in practice this is hardly the case, specifically when event data from different sources are pooled together in event stores. In this paper, we address this research gap by inferring potential case and activity identifiers in a provenance agnostic way. More specifically, we propose a semi-automatic technique for discovering event relations that are semantically relevant for business process monitoring. The results are evaluated in an industry case study with an international telecommunication provider.

Abstract:
Business Process Management systems are often used to improve the productivity of organizations and companies. For such systems, it is important to control all the variables (among them the time) and the status of all the stakeholders that are involved into the processes. This task aims at improving the employee satisfaction, the estimation of time and criticalities, and the control of business processes of an organization. In spite of this important task, most of the companies base their analysis on very simple process models. This work presents a Semantic Timed Model Checking algorithm for Business Processes. It has been used as a basic tool in several scenarios such as process selection, process validation, and process monitoring. The approach relies on: 1) a representation of business processes based on semantically annotated timed transition systems (ATTS), 2) a representation of specifications based on a semantically annotated version of timed computation tree logic (AnTCTL), and 3) an efficient model checking algorithm. The ATTS allows us to take into account the temporal evolution of a business process, with its temporal constraints. This is based on Timed Transition Systems. The importance of semantics is also widely recognized. Indeed, semantics allows us to provide a non-ambiguous meaning to process activities and variables. According to the mainstream, the semantics relies on Description Logic. As a consequence, this work presents an integration of timed transition systems and semantic representation technologies in an efficient way. The AnTCTL allows us to represent the traditional performance indicators with a well-founded semantics. Furthermore, it is possible to define a new set of indicators that it is not possible to define with the traditional business process models. The model checking algorithm is an integration of traditional timed model checking techniques with semantic reasoning. This algorithm has been proved to be sound and complete and PSPACE-Complete. This work can be considered the first step towards the use of semantic timed model checking in problems of performance analysis for Business Processes. The proposed approach has been applied to real world case studies.

Abstract:
Care process monitoring is important in healthcare domains to provide precise and detailed analytics on patients, providers, and resources participating in a care process and their status. These analytics are used to keep track of whether the quality of care goals set by healthcare organizations are satisfied and ensure that legislative and organizational guidelines are followed. The complexity of care process monitoring can vary depending on whether the care process takes place in a hospital or out in the community, and it can vary depending on the complexity of the information technology infrastructure that is in place to support the care process. A Care Process Monitoring Application (CPMA) is a software application which collects and integrates data from various sources while a care process is being provided, in order to provide performance reporting of metrics that are used to measure how well the performance goals and guidelines for the care process are being met. In our research, we have studied how CPMAs are built in order to improve the quality of their engineering. The significant challenge in this context is how to engineer a CPMA so that the engineering process is repeatable, produces a CPMA of consistent high quality, and requires less time, less effort and less complexity. This thesis proposes an application framework for care process monitoring that collects and integrates events from event sources, maintains the individual and aggregate states of the care process and populates a metrics data mart to support performance reporting. Our contributions are the following: a state-based application meta-model of care process monitoring, a care process monitoring architectural pattern, and finally, a behavior driven development methodology for CPMAs based on our meta-model and architectural pattern. Our results are validated through three different case studies in which we collaborated with two different health care organizations to build and deploy CPMAs for two different care processes (one hospital-based, the other community-based) in collaboration with healthcare clinicians and researchers.

Abstract:
Patient wait times and care service times are key performance measures for care processes in hospitals. Managing the quality of care delivered by these processes in real-time is challenging. A key challenge is to correlate source medical events to infer the care process states that define patient wait times and care service times. Commercially available complex event processing engines do not have built in support for the concept of care process state. This makes it unnecessarily complex to define and maintain rules for inferring states from source medical events in a care process. Another challenge is how to present the data in a real-time BI dashboard and the underlying data model to use to support this BI dashboard. Data representation architecture can potentially lead to delays in processing and presenting the data in the BI dashboard. In this research, we have investigated the problem of real-time monitoring of care processes, performed a gap analysis of current information system support for it, researched and assessed available technologies, and shown how to most effectively leverage event driven and BI architectures when building information support for real-time monitoring of care processes. We introduce a state monitoring engine for inferring and managing states based on an application model for care process monitoring. A BI architecture is also leveraged for the data model to support the real-time data processing and reporting requirements of the application’s portal. The research is validated with a case study to create a real-time care process monitoring application for an Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) clinical pathway in collaboration with IBM and Osler hospital. The research methodology is based on design-oriented research.

Abstract:
Factory shop floors of the future will see a significant increase in interconnected devices for monitoring and control. However, if a Service Orientated Architecture (SOA) is implemented on all such devices then this will result in a large number of permutations of services and composite services. These services combined with other business level components can pose a huge challenge to manage as it is often difficult to keep an overview of all the devices, equipment and services. This thesis proposes an SOA based novel assimilation architecture for integrating disparate industrial hardware based processes and business processes of an enterprise in particular the plastics machinery environment. The key benefits of the proposed architecture are the reduction of complexity when integrating disparate hardware platforms; managing the associated services as well as allowing the Micro Injection Moulding (µIM) process to be monitored on the web through service and data integration. An Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) based middleware layer integrates the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) based environmental and simulated machine process systems with frontend Google Gadgets (GGs) based web visualisation applications. A business process framework is proposed to manage and orchestrate the resulting services from the architecture. Results from the analysis of the WSN kits in terms of their usability and reliability showed that the Jennic WSN was easy to setup and had a reliable communication link in the polymer industrial environment with the PER being below 0.5%. The prototype Jennic WSN based µIM process monitoring system had limitations when monitoring high-resolution machine data, therefore a novel hybrid integration architecture was proposed. The assimilation architecture was implemented on a distributed server based test bed. Results from test scenarios showed that the architecture was highly scalable and could potentially allow a large number of disparate sensor based hardware systems and services to be hosted, managed, visualised and linked to form a cohesive business process.

Abstract:
The relevance of the topic “Digital transformation of tax control business processes based on SAP solutions” based on the example of PJSC Aeroflot is due to the active development of information technologies that automate the process of tax monitoring and the rapid growth of participants in this tax regime, each of which is a representative of large business. The novelty of the topic used is proved by the fact that right now the trend for the digitalization of the economy in the Russian Federation is gaining momentum. At this stage, tax monitoring in Russia is experimental in nature and is applied only to the largest taxpayers, but in the future, the possibility of entering the tax monitoring regime may be extended to medium-sized businesses. Tax control will be built into the internal business processes of organizations and will be carried out unnoticed by taxpayers.

Abstract:
Cloud computing has become one of the fastest growing segments of the IT industry. In such open distributed computing environments, security is of paramount concern. This thesis aims at developing protocols and techniques for private and reliable outsourcing of design and compute-intensive tasks on cloud computing infrastructures. The thesis enables clients with limited processing capabilities to use the dynamic, cost-effective and powerful cloud computing resources, while having guarantees that their confidential data and services, and the results of their computations, will not be compromised by untrusted cloud service providers. The thesis contributes to the general area of cloud computing security by working in three directions. First, the design by selection is a new capability that permits the design of business processes by reusing some fragments in the cloud. For this purpose, we propose an anonymization-based protocol to secure the design of business processes by hiding the provenance of reused fragments. Second, we study two di_erent cases of fragments' sharing : biometric authentication and complex event processing. For this purpose, we propose techniques where the client would only do work which is linear in the size of its inputs, and the cloud bears all of the super-linear computational burden. Moreover, the cloud computational burden would have the same time complexity as the best known solution to the problem being outsourced. This prevents achieving secure outsourcing by placing a huge additional overhead on the cloud servers. This thesis has been carried out in Université Paris Descartes (LIPADE - diNo research group) and in collaboration with SOMONE under a Cifre contract.
