Abstract:
SAP, the most pervasive enterprise resource planning software package in the world, is currently being used in several universities across the US. The use of this software varies from institution to institution, primarily by the degree in which it permeates the business curriculum. From a personal perspective, the author seeks to examine why SAP is fully integrated in some curriculums and why it is sporadically used in other curriculums. The question of how SAP can be successfully implemented into the business curriculum is addressed and explained.

Abstract:
In spite of the great variety of potential advantages, it is also necessary to illuminate the real effects of Standard ERP Software in practice. Recent studies have revealed that 81% of German companies interviewed using SAP, do not fully exploit the software’s ability to optimize business processes, though 61% stated that SAP offers very good process optimization opportunities. (CSC Ploenzke AG, 2002, “European SAP Practice, Umfrageergebnisse,” SAPphire 2000). Therefore we evaluated popular life cycle models with respect to their suitability to implement Standard Software in a process driven way (Kuehl, R.W.A., and Knoell, H.-D., 2002, “Evaluation of Topical Approaches to the Implementation of Standardised ERP-Systems,” Proc. Abstract:
The goal of this research project is to develop a simulation model specifically for the Management Accounting Information Systems course an SAP enabled course for junior Accounting majors at Saint Joseph's University. The purpose of this simulation is to present students with a set of business scenarios, and have the students make a knowledgeable decision using SAP Business Warehouse software. The scenarios will act as a simplified replication of the business environment; thus, they will provide the students with an integrated learning experience. They will make business decisions to ensure the profitability and cash flow of a corporation. While making these decisions, students participate in the application and analysis provided by PC4YOU, which is a simulated company within SAP for demonstration and education purposes. Eventually, the students will need to justify the existence of their strategic plans by evaluating benefits of the system using the reporting tools available within SAP. To provide a learning by doing experience, the scenarios will be used to demonstrate the reporting functionality within PC4YOU, the simulated company integrated into the SAP SEM system. Todays global economy is putting a premium on the ability of students to evaluate a broad range of decisions in collaboration with adaptive supply chains. A critical component of the evolving accounting curriculum lies in the ability to extend students beyond the numbers to evaluate the effective and efficient delivery of these supply chains.

Abstract:
This case study, which is divided into parts A and B, describes one firm's experiences as it adopted a process perspective to managing its business, examined the implications for its information systems needs, decided to acquire SAP (an integrated, enterprise-wide software package) and embarked on the SAP implementation. ‘Dow Corning Corporation part A: Rethinking the Role of IT Within the Firm’ focuses on the business context and describes the role and structure of the information technology (IT) function at Dow Corning in late 1994. In the midst of a legal crisis that was draining financial resources, the firm had to address global competition. The case poses the question of how IT should be organized and managed to meet current business challenges. ‘Dow Corning Corporation part B: Re-engineering Global Processes’ is set in March 1997. The IT organization had been redesigned and reported to a member of the senior management team. The case focuses on Dow Corning's pilot implementation of SAP and its plans to re-engineer global processes. Special attention is given to the IT unit's role in the re-engineering and systems implementation processes.

Abstract:
Enterprise resource planning (ERP) provides an efficient flow of information and agreater control over the processes between the different modules of an enterprise. It helps the company to respond more quickly to market opportunities andcompetitive pressures. To succeed in business systems implementation, thecompany needs to consider the critical success factors that can be the starting pointin the implementation process. In this case study, we analyze critical successfactors for ERP implementation based on business analysts and IT staffperspective, through four interviews on a specific company. The starting point is toidentify critical success factors for ERP implementation through a literature study. The company's measures to facilitate cooperation and communication between thetwo groups are also presented. As a result, the review of the eight tested factors differs between the two studygroups. These factors are “clear goals and objectives”, “user training”, “businessprocess reengineering” and “project management”. In particular, clear goals andobjectives are identified as the most critical factor by the IT staff. However, according to business analysts, no factor ends up in the highest level of the reviewscale. In contrast, “top management support” and “effective communication” end upin second position of the review scale in both groups on the question of the mostcritical factors. Regardless of the differences in the examination of the factors allare still considered critical and important. Investigated company focuses onfacilitating communication and cooperation between the two groups by workingagile and increase the presence in each other's everyday lives.

Abstract:

In a community where copyright and intellectual property law is getting more attention in the media, it is important for companies to be aware of their possession of software licenses. In this thesis we are going to investigate the awareness of the software licensing situation in some companies. To collect data that can be analyzed, we are interviewing companies. The interviews are performed by phone or e-mail. A similar report hasn’t been done before therefore it’s an interesting subject to look at.

The interviews resulted in answers from 11 companies. The answers showed that the awareness about software licensing among the companies had big variations. Some other things that varied among the companies were the size of the companies and the usage of software licensing policy within the companies. The way and method of handling software licensing also varied among the companies.

A lot of software programs, along with folders and Excel-lists dominated the method of handling software licenses among the companies. Software developing companies together with their interest organization for example BSA has demands on companies using their software to have a foreseeable documentation for the software licenses. They gladly see that the companies uses a best practice method to manage their license possessions, one best practice method is Software Asset Management, SAM.

It is hard to recommend a method for software license management to a non-specific company, because every company has a unique organization and computer network structure. Most of the big license management software is following a best practice method for software license management.

Nowadays, most of the discussions in ERP software are related to the issues in software implementation, or interaction between the company and customers. There are very few research been conducted to study the business model structure in the SME area for 1) open source ERP companies and 2) commercial ERP software companies’ SME business unit. By using grounded theory and case study qualitative research method, this research analyses and compare the business model structure of Compiere Inc. and SAP B1 business unit. we found that 1) Compiere Inc. is able to reduce customer’s cost and less reengineering required, while SAP B1 business unit claims for BRP for the customer. 2) Compiere Inc. has strengthened its product and revenue through collaboration with communities, on the other hand, main source of revenue for SAP B1 business unit rely on its partners. 3) There has been imitation of each other’s business model between Compiere Inc. and SAP B1 business unit. Compiere Inc. has adopted partnership strategy of commercial ERP companies, while SAP B1 business unit has released some of its software codes. 4) The status and relationship between SAP B1 business unit and its partners is still requires studies. By analyzing the business model structure of Compiere Inc. and SAP B1 business unit, this research intend to provide new thinking perspectives and direction for software companies to improve their competitive advantage, and to provide referential material for future’s academic research.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are playing a pivotal role in shaping an international economic landscape through job creation and acting as a catalyst in encouraging indigenous-traditional business activities, particularly in rural areas. However, SMEs operate their business with a variety of challenges. For example, the inventory control system is operated manually which results in intensive human errors. The argument driving the study was that a wireless web-based inventory control system could lead to sustenance and competitiveness of rural SMEs. The objective of this study was to; analyse how rural SMEs conduct business and to analyse how manual inventory control system are used, explore issues and challenges experienced which may be affecting the process of conducting business, and lastly to determine how wireless inventory control system could be used appropriately to improve rural SMEs.

Abstract:
AbstractAlong with the increasing popularity of agile software development, software work has become much more social than ever. Contemporary software teams rely on a variety of collaborative practices, such as pair programming, the topic of our study. Many agilists advocated the importance of collocation, face-to-face interaction, and physical artefacts incorporated in the shared workspace, which the COVID-19 pandemic made unavailable; most software companies around the world were forced to send their engineers to work from home. As software projects and teams overnight turned into distributed collaborations, we question what happened to the pair programming practice in the work-from-home mode. This paper reports on a longitudinal study of remote pair programming in two companies. We conducted 38 interviews with 30 engineers from Norway, Sweden, and the USA, and used the results of a survey in one of the case companies. Our study is unique as we collected the data longitudinally in April/May 2020, Sep/Oct 2020, and Jan/Feb 2021. We found that pair programming has decreased and some interviewees report not pairing at all for almost a full year. The experiences of those who paired vary from actively co-editing the code by using special tools to more passively co-reading and discussing the code and solutions by sharing the screen. Finally, we found that the interest in and the use of PP over time, since the first months of the forced work from home to early 2021, has admittedly increased, also as a social practice.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) packages, such as SAP, present different competitive challenges to vendors and users. Vendor competitiveness demands an agile deployment process for ERP software while offering increased functionality. User competitiveness depends on obtaining optimal benefits from ERP while not sacrificing competitive agility. This research shows that as deployability of SAP software becomes more agile, using organizations experience increased business agility. In addition to agile ERP deployment, the importance of process understanding and targeted agility impacts are shown to influence user SAP outcomes.

Abstract:
SAP is one of the dominating enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, which is used as an essential part of enterprise-wide information systems. While it can significantly contribute towards an organization’s competitiveness by increasing efficiencies across various functional units, it can, on the other hand, bring about disasters if implemented incorrectly. Literature presents both implementation successes and failures. This chapter presents a successful SAP implementation in the WATER CORPORATION in Western Australia. A “Benefit Realization Strategy and Realization Process” was considered to be the key success factor in the implementation of SAP. The chapter describes the benefit realization structure and process and discusses how SAP was implemented successfully within this framework. The benefits realization and its impact are presented. Finally, future directions are highlighted.

Abstract:
The objective of this chapter is to provide a detailed review of the core principles, foundations and issues of enterprise systems (ES). Since the late 1990s, enterprise systems have promised to seamlessly integrate information flowing through the organisation. They claim to lay redundant many of the integration problems associated with legacy systems. These promises are timely considering the current trends of globalization, virtual organisations, and constant business and technological changes, features of many strategy agendas. In an effort to better understand the nature of these packages this chapter reviews the ES evolutionary process, and generic software characteristics are also identified, followed by system benefits and limitations. A review of current approaches to ES implementation allows for a critique of system outcomes and identification of challenges facing today’s ES implementations. The chapter concludes with suggestions for overcoming some of these challenges.

Abstract:
In spite of the great variety of potential advantages, it is also necessary to illuminate the real effects of Standard Software in practice. Recent studies have revealed that 81% of companies interviewed using SAP, do not fully exploit the software’s ability to optimise business processes, though 61% stated that SAP offers very good process optimisation opportunities.[CS01] Therefore this paper evaluates popular life cycle models with respect to their suitability to implement Standard Software in a process driven way.

Abstract:
It is always a major endeavor and challenge to build a new combined-cycle power plant. This fact combined with having stringent reliability, availability and efficiency contractual terms necessitates a well planned, highly effective maintenance strategy. To further complicate the matter, the company was rolling out a new EAM; SAP. AES Corporation was facing exactly these issues for their new plant in Cartagena, Spain. This paper will describe the approach used by AES to develop a proactive maintenance program that integrates condition and performance information to achieve their goals. The process begins with creating a maintenance strategy using the SRCM® process. From the results of the strategy development SAP-PLM module was configured to support agreed to business process models, asset hierarchy schemes, task list, value lists and spare parts determination. The strategy developed also identified the PdM and ODR technologies to use and lead to the development of the PdM program. It also created the operator driven (ODR) tasks by specifying what equipment is to be watched by operators as part of an equipment health program. Finally, PdM, ODR and appropriate process data were linked together into a decision support system. This information combined with the plant performance information will provide AES an effective, integrated program to manage their plant and equipment. Due to the limited staff to manage the station a software tool was used to lessen the effort to understand the condition of critical equipment based on the data. A discussion of why it is necessary for new and existing plants to create a proactive maintenance program that starts with business processes followed by software and hardware including CMMS, PdM, online monitoring, electronic operator rounds and ends with the right data in these tools is presented. Without the proper data including asset register, criticality, reliability information and condition data the program will not support plant objectives and could potentially cost the company large penalties for non-performance. Examples of work products developed with work flowcharts will be provided. By actively pursing an integrated, proactive solution for the maintenance and performance programs AES will achieve their business objectives from the very beginning of plant commercialization. It will also ultimately lead to savings in not only implementing a complete maintenance program but will provide a solid foundation for managing and improving the program operation of the plant to meet and exceed contractual performance requirements.

Abstract:
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems offer a software-based system that handles an enterprise’s total information system needs in an integrated fashion. These systems are purported to incorporate “best business practice”. Many universities have realized the potential of these systems as educational tools and have developed curriculum accordingly. Many companies in recent times have identified the benefits of the Human Resources functionality offered by ERP systems. However universities in Australia have not realized the potential of this functionality as a teaching tool to reinforce many of the concepts covered in a Human Resource Management curriculum. This paper outlines the experiences at Victoria University where SAP Human Resources functionality was incorporated for the first time. It also describes a number of student projects under development that will enhance this curriculum development. The paper will provide a model to other universities who are considering developing similar type of curriculum. .

Abstract:
Romania is facing the phenomenon of migration, including brain drain, registering losses regarding the specialized human capital. A very significant loss of specialists is present in the health sector, this loss being reflected in the population health, but also in the efficiency of the health system. Therefore, the push factors in case of physicians migration must be known and analyzed, in order to take measures to reduce this phenomenon. In this sense, indicators refering to the economic situation of the destination countries in case of physicians from Romania and the number of Current Professional Certificates were analyzed, assuming that it reflects the number of physicians who intend to migrate from Romania. The data source is represented by Eurostat and the Romanian College of Physicians, and the analysis was performed using SAS software.

Abstract:
Purpose – Hypothesis verification and quantification of the relationship between drivers and the resulting factors for a lasting impact on the long-term ICT development, globalization, structural changes in the geo-economy and changes in socio-ethical standards in society in the frontier financial markets. Research methodology – Based on open source information, a database of almost 19,000 data was formed - 748 obser-vations by country on 25 indicators. The simulation was performed on the basis of a mixed-model, which is a statistical model that is an extended version of the General Linear Model (GLM), using SAS / STAT® 13.1 software. Findings – Based on the Solution for Fixed Effects and Solution for Random Effects and the test of fixed effects, glo-balization, economic dominance, economic growth and human development were identified as statistically significant patterns of transformation of frontier financial markets. Research limitations – The paper does not attempt a comprehensive coverage of the topic. However, it identifies main drivers of the development of frontier financial markets and makes calls for further research. Practical implications – The findings are likely to be useful for practitioners and researchers to gain knowledge about the main drivers of the frontier financial markets development. Originality/Value – The application of the technique of multidimensional ranking of drivers has identified globalization, geoeconomic changes and human development as the most influential drivers for the development of frontier financial markets.
