Ammen, Sharon. Unbounded Domesticity. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252040658.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter looks at May Irwin’s alignment with domestic feminism as one of her strategies for success. Other actresses used domesticity to promote their professional lives, but Irwin created the most formidable pairing of these two lives. She wrote articles about the importance of women as savers, shoppers, and buyers of real estate in the new consumer capitalism of the late nineteenth century. She extolled motherhood as essential for success as an actress and she became the first celebrity chef when she published her popular cookbook in 1904. The author connects May Irwin to both the older idea of Victorian womanhood and the “New Woman” and considers the effects of the growing business of advertising, the culture of professionalism and the new field of home economics.

Odaba¸, Meltem, Thomas J. Holt, and Ronald L. Breiger. Governance in Online Stolen Data Markets. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198794974.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
We analyze the governance structure of online stolen data markets. As cybercriminal underground economies, stolen data markets are beyond the reach of state intervention, and yet they need form and regulation in order to function. While the illicit nature of the business brings risks to its participants, the online characteristics of these markets enable the participants to communicate easily, which is a crucial means of generating trust. We first identify stolen data markets in terms of their economic organization as two-sided markets, economic platforms with two distinct user groups that provide each other with network synergies. This characterization enables us to understand the role of the forum administrator as that of an intermediary, market creator, and market regulator. Then we clarify the role of communication networks and social structure in creating trust among buyers and sellers.

Puranam, Phanish. The Microstructure of Organizations. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199672363.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book synthesizes a decade of research by the author into fundamental issues in organization design. The result is a novel micro-structural perspective on organizations, which aims to both expand and narrow current thinking. The new perspective takes an expansive view on the kinds of phenomena that can be studied in terms of organization design- such as cross–functional teams, strategic partnerships, buyer-supplier relations, alliance networks, mega-projects, post-merger integration, business groups, open source communities, and crowdsourcing, besides traditional concerns with bureaucratic organizations. At the same time, this approach narrows focus by abstracting away from the variety and complexity of organizations to a few fundamental and universal problems of organizing (that relate to how they aggregate their members’ efforts), as well as a few reusable building blocks microstructures (which capture common patterns of interaction between members of an organization). The microstructural approach to organizations will be of interest to researchers and PhD students in management, organization science, and strategy
