Abstract:
Emergency department nurses are uniquely positioned to conduct skin examinations on many patients every day they work, as they are often the first to undress patients into examination gowns, as well as perform assessment tasks such as auscultating heart and lung sounds, auscultating bowel sounds, palpating the abdomen, and assessing the lower extremities for edema. In addition, ED nurses see a myriad of injuries to the skin and bones that requires visual assessment. By performing a routine skin examination on patients, ED nurses can significantly affect a reduction in the detection of advanced stage melanoma and, thus, increase survival rates.

Ghimire, Birendra. "Busy burst technology applied to OFDMA-TDD systems." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/3780.

Abstract:
The most significant bottleneck in wireless communication systems is an ever-increasing disproportion between the bandwidth demand and the available spectrum. A major challenge in the field of wireless communications is to maximise the spatial reuse of resources whilst avoiding detrimental co-channel interference (CCI). To this end, frequency planning and centralised coordination approaches are widely used in wireless networks. However, the networks for the next generation of wireless communications are often envisioned to be decentralised, randomly distributed in space, hierarchical and support heterogeneous traffic and service types. Fixed frequency allocation would not cater for the heterogeneous demands and centralised resource allocation would be cumbersome and require a lot of signalling. Decentralised radio resource allocation based on locally available information is considered the key. In this context, the busy burst (BB) signalling concept is identified as a potential mechanism for decentralised interference management in future generation networks. Interference aware allocation of time-frequency slots (chunks) is accomplished by letting receivers transmit a BB in a time-multiplexed mini-slot, upon successful reception of data. Exploiting channel reciprocity of the time division duplex (TDD) mode, the transmitters avoid reusing the chunks where the received BB power is above a pre-determined threshold so as to limit the CCI caused towards the reserved chunks to a threshold value. In this thesis, the performance of BB signalling mechanism in orthogonal frequency division multiple access - time division duplexing (OFDMA-TDD) systems is evaluated by means of system level simulations in networks operating in ad hoc and cellular scenarios. Comparisons are made against the state-of-the-art centralised CCI avoidance and mitigation methods, viz. frequency planning, fractional frequency reuse, and antenna array with switched grid of beams, as well as decentralised methods such as the carrier sense multiple access method that attempt to avoid CCI by avoiding transmission on chunks deemed busy. The results demonstrate that with an appropriate choice of threshold parameter, BB-based techniques outperform all of the above state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, it is demonstrated that by adjusting the BB-specific threshold parameter, the system throughput can be traded off for improving throughput for links with worse channel condition, both in the ad hoc and cellular scenario. Moreover, by utilising a variable BB power that allows a receiver to signal the maximum CCI it can tolerate, it is shown that a more favourable trade-off between total system throughput and link throughput can be made. Furthermore, by performing link adaptation, it is demonstrated that the spatial reuse and the energy efficiency can be traded off by adjusting the threshold parameter. Although the BB signalling mechanism is shown to be effective in avoiding detrimental CCI, it cannot mitigate CCI by itself. On the other hand, multiple antenna techniques such as adaptive beamforming or switched beam approaches allow CCI to be mitigated but suffer from hidden node problems. The final contribution of this thesis is that by combining the BB signalling mechanism with multiple antenna techniques, it is demonstrated that the hybrid approach enhances spatial reusability of resources whilst avoiding detrimental CCI. In summary, this thesis has demonstrated that BB provides a flexible radio resource mechanism that is suitable for future generation networks.

Abstract:
In this thesis we discuss three models that are used to estimate vehicle busy probabilities when call service time depends on call location and the serving vehicle. The first model requires an assumption that each vehicle operates independently of the other vehicles. The second model approximately corrects for the independence assumption. The third model also approximately corrects for the independence assumption, however it assumes that all vehicles have an equal busy probability. We evaluate model bias by comparing the estimates from each model with estimates from a simulation model. We use extremely long runs to ensure that the simulation is both accurate and precise. Our results suggest that the model using the independence assumption performs poorly as the system utilization increases. The correction models, however, perform well over a wide range of system sizes and utilizations. (Abstract shortened with permission of author.)

Abstract:
This thesis examines how making extends artists' thoughts beyond their conceptions. Central to this is consideration of how an artist's statements and their work relate: this thesis argues that the relationship is neither of identity nor contradiction, but of a productive tension from which emerges a richer understanding of thought. A similar approach underscores this doctorate's relationship of studio and written components, both of which desire self-sufficiency. The studio work consists of discrete yet mutually informing series, all engaged with the specificity of a moment of exposure, whether here and now or recording a past moment. The notion of 'documentation' underscores these works, which include large chemical photographs, high-definition video, cyanotypes and extensive exploration of casting to reveal latent images. The written component is a thorough study of the various instances of Medardo Rosso's sculpture Ecce Puer, offering art-historical and theoretical grounding of hands-on making as a way pressing cultural issues inhere in a work at a more fundamental level than understood by its contemporaries or maker. The first chapter locates Rosso in his historical milieu. Chapter 2 assesses the elements constituting Ecce Puer; it argues that no definitions of a 'work' adequately encompass these, and coins the term 'complex work' to designate artworks indivisibly singular and plural, concrete and abstract. Chapter 3 offers phenomenological interpretation of Rosso's confused writings, illuminating them through Maurice Merleau-Ponty's late philosophy but understanding Rosso's thought as inadequate to the complexity of his work. Chapter 4 examines Rosso's photography, specifically his photography of photographs, connecting what this achieves to his phenomenology. Chapter 5 introduces a key notion of 'friendship' to understand how the connections between instances of Ecce Puer became 'meaningful'. Having offered a fundamentally new interpretation of Rosso's project, chapter 6 extends Michael Fried's history of French painting to relocate Rosso within early twentieth-century art.

Abstract:
A longstanding folk belief suggests that 'busy' people possess the ability to get more done than others. Busyness, defined as the demands of everyday life, has been shown to generate cognitive load, which has been called 'cognitive busyness.' Although most cognitive theory would deny the possibility that cognitive load may enhance performance, some recent research may support the possibility. Cowan's 1988 information-processing model was used to study how measures of everyday busyness correlated with performance on cognitive tasks. The research question addressed whether any combination of such measures, in combination with working memory, could predict performance on such tasks. 92 participants, paid workers with Amazon Mechanical Turk, engaged in an online process, starting with completion of a validated self-report instrument to measure busyness. They then participated in 2 activities, structured as games and designed to measure working memory and cognitive performance. Multiple regressions, linear and nonlinear, were used to identify significant predictors of performance. Results of the analyses did not reveal any evidence for significant relationships between the variables. Additionally, 'volitional busyness' did not appear to enhance, or even affect, performance on a planning task. Further research exploring the effect of these variables on a working memory-based task may be worthwhile, if only to confirm the present findings. This project might benefit linguists tracking semantic change, showing how a term may adopt an entirely different meaning and suggesting further refinement in identifying such shifts over the years; psychologists exploring cognitive load and its effects; and social psychologists interested in making corrections to popular perceptions of the value of tradition gender-associated tasks.

In the face of large increases in the number of passengers and flights, busy airports worldwide have been trying to optimize operating efficiency and throughput and minimize congestion on a daily basis. In the case of departures, measures can be taken at the gate, on the taxiway system or at the runway queue to minimize departure delays and/or the cost of unavoidable delays. This cost includes needless fuel consumption and noxious emissions. In this thesis, we focus primarily on runway queue optimization. The first part of this work consists of designing a generic simulation which models specific days of operations at an airport. Using as input the schedule of operations specific to the modeled airport, the simulation processes all departures and stores the characteristic times of the process for each departing aircraft. The quantities of interest are either incrementally computed by the simulation or modeled using probability distributions derived from airport-specific data. We then present a dynamic programming approach to sequencing departing aircraft at the runway queue. Two algorithms are presented based on the idea of Constrained Position Shifting, which maintains a high level of fairness in the order in which aircraft gain access to runways, while also improving efficiency by comparison to First Come First Served sequencing. The objective of the first algorithm is to minimize makespan, and that of the second to minimize delays. We then focus on a specific airport, which has been experiencing one of the fastest growth rates in the industry. We analyze the output of our simulation as applied to this airport and accumulate insights about congestion at the departure runways. We next apply this sequencing algorithm to this specific airport using multiple demand profiles that represent both the current traffic levels, as well as anticipated future ones that would result in more congestion. We give quantitative arguments to confirm the positive impact of the optimization on the airport's operations. We also emphasize the importance of the aircraft mix on the techniques' performance and show that the sequencing algorithms provide higher benefits (in terms of reducing delays) as the mix becomes more heterogeneous.

Furstenburg, Phillip Pieter. "Purpose-orientated stocking of procedure trolleys saves time in busy Emergency Centres." Master's thesis, Faculty of Health Sciences, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/31524.

Full text
Abstract:
Background and aim Inefficient storage and sourcing of routinely required consumables located on procedure trolleys results in time wasted when preparing for common procedures in Emergency Centres, contributing to poor efficiency and quality of care. We designed a novel purpose-orientated procedure trolley, and evaluated its impact on time spent on procedure preparation and efficiency. Methods In an urban emergency centre, eight participants were measured each day over 24 days, once using the contemporary setup and once using the modified procedure setup. During each simulation, efficiency markers were assessed (time spent on procedure preparation, steps taken, stops made, and amount of time participants had to open a drawer to locate required items). Results The mean time required to collect the required items for IV cannulation and blood sampling from the purpose-orientated trolley was 22.7 seconds(s) (SD = 3.66) compared to 49.2 s (SD = 15.45) using the contemporary trolley. There was a significant difference in mean collection time between the two trolleys (p < 0.0005). There was a significant difference (p-value < 0.0005) in all the other categories: steps taken, stops made, and drawer opening. Conclusion In our setting, stocking procedure trolleys in a purpose-orientated manner has the potential to improve efficiency by reducing time spent on procedure preparation.

Dixon, W. S. "Quantitative tool for measuring safety culture on busy construction sites in Great Britain." Thesis, University of Salford, 2014. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/33209/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is aimed at developing an academically robust, cost effective tool / procedure for measuring safety culture that is easily administered on a busy construction site in Great Britain. This researcher works as a safety manager on construction sites and is typically employed on multi-million pound new build projects for blue-chip clients. These sites typically employ between 1-3,000 workers. Keeping workers safe is challenging and important, not only from the legal and ethical perspectives but also to ensure the companies reputations. To this end all of the companies and clients that this researcher has worked for in the last 15 years have been keen and vocal in their attempts to improve the safety culture on site. The researcher has witnessed large sums of money being spent in an attempt to make such improvements. Typically, companies wish to see tangible results after having invested money in order to facilitate change or improvements. Investing money to improve the site safety culture should be no different. This is where the difficulties arise and where a gap in knowledge has been identified by this research.

Abstract:
Open clusters have been the focus of several exoplanet surveys, but only a few planets have so far been discovered. The Kepler spacecraft revealed an abundance of small planets around small cool stars, therefore, such cluster members are prime targets for exoplanet transit searches. Kepler's new mission, K2, is targeting several open clusters and star-forming regions around the ecliptic to search for transiting planets around their low-mass constituents. Here, we report the discovery of the first transiting planet in the intermediate-age (800 Myr) Beehive cluster (Praesepe). K2-95 is a faint (Kp = 15.5 mag) M3.0 +/- 0.5 dwarf from K2's Campaign 5 with an effective temperature of 3471 +/- 124 K, approximately solar metallicity and a radius of 0.402 +/- 0.050 R-circle dot. We detected a transiting planet with a radius of 3.47(-0.53)(+0.78)R(circle plus) and an orbital period of 10.134 days. We combined photometry, medium/high-resolution spectroscopy, adaptive optics/speckle imaging, and archival survey images to rule out any false-positive detection scenarios, validate the planet, and further characterize the system. The planet's radius is very unusual as M-dwarf field stars rarely have Neptune-sized transiting planets. The comparatively large radius of K2-95b is consistent with the other recently discovered cluster planets K2-25b (Hyades) and K2-33b (Upper Scorpius), indicating systematic differences in their evolutionary states or formation. These discoveries from K2 provide a snapshot of planet formation and evolution in cluster environments and thus make excellent laboratories to test differences between field-star and cluster planet populations.

Abstract:
The media plays an extremely important role in the prevailing social and cultural environment. They emphasise that it is the reality they reflect, which converts the medial representation of women into notions of how they should be and look to be a part of the reality that is deemed important enough to appear in the media. They thus act as an ideological tool, as these notions contribute to the maintenance of the gender roles, stereotypes and ideals that society has still to shed. We found the creation and maintenance of this ‘mediagender’ highly topical and interesting for further studying. We chose to focus on three womendominating programs, out of the steady stream of reality-TV that is produced and that occupies today’s TV- listings. Our purpose of this study was to, through a gendertheoretical and socialconstructionistic approach, semiotically analyse and compare the gender roles, stereotypes and ideals that we thought existed in Swedish and American reality-TV. We intended to, with the help of two underlying themes, examine how ‘feminine gender’ was represented and constructed in speech and image, and also conventions and stereotypical counter images that may exist in the depiction of this. Based on our analysis, combined with our theoretical framework, it has in our discussion been revealed that there are both similarities and differences between Swedish and American reality-TV. In both cases, women have the same opinion in regards to the female ideal image, and its associated body and beauty ideals. However, there are differences in Swedish and American media and the way which they portray women. American media showed its women as highly multitalented as she bears responsibility for both career and family, while the Swedish woman in American conditions considered uninclined to both work and be responsible for the household. We have in our analysis been aware of the impact that social constructionism has had on the prejudices we have grown up with, and thus the prejudices and stereotypes we have discovered in our chosen programs.

Gramotnev, Galina. "Analysis of dispersion and propagation of fine and ultra fine particle aerosols from a busy road." Queensland University of Technology, 2007. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/16338/.

Full text
Abstract:
Nano-particle aerosols are one of the major types of air pollutants in the urban indoor and outdoor environments. Therefore, determination of mechanisms of formation, dispersion, evolution, and transformation of combustion aerosols near the major source of this type of air pollution - busy roads and road networks - is one of the most essential and urgent goals. This Thesis addresses this particular direction of research by filling in gaps in the existing physical understanding of aerosol behaviour and evolution. The applicability of the Gaussian plume model to combustion aerosols near busy roads is discussed and used for the numerical analysis of aerosol dispersion. New methods of determination of emission factors from the average fleet on a road and from different types of vehicles are developed. Strong and fast evolution processes in combustion aerosols near busy roads are discovered experimentally, interpreted, modelled, and statistically analysed. A new major mechanism of aerosol evolution based on the intensive thermal fragmentation of nano-particles is proposed, discussed and modelled. A comprehensive interpretation of mutual transformations of particle modes, a strong maximum of the total number concentration at an optimal distance from the road, increase of the proportion of small nano-particles far from the road is suggested. Modelling of the new mechanism is developed on the basis of the theory of turbulent diffusion, kinetic equations, and theory of stochastic evaporation/degradation processes. Several new powerful statistical methods of analysis are developed for comprehensive data analysis in the presence of strong turbulent mixing and stochastic fluctuations of environmental factors and parameters. These methods are based upon the moving average approach, multi-variate and canonical correlation analyses. As a result, an important new physical insight into the relationships/interactions between particle modes, atmospheric parameters and traffic conditions is presented. In particular, a new definition of particle modes as groups of particles with similar diameters, characterised by strong mutual correlations, is introduced. Likely sources of different particle modes near a busy road are identified and investigated. Strong anti-correlations between some of the particle modes are discovered and interpreted using the derived fragmentation theorem. The results obtained in this thesis will be important for accurate prediction of aerosol pollution levels in the outdoor and indoor environments, for the reliable determination of human exposure and impact of transport emissions on the environment on local and possibly global scales. This work will also be important for the development of reliable and scientifically-based national and international standards for nano-particle emissions.

Abstract:

Traditionally, banks have always had a close relationship with their customers. They often knew them as individuals, and satisfied their needs through personal customized services. Recently, the development of electronic banking or e-banking has influenced the increasing competition within the banking industry. E-banking customers are nowadays just “a click away” from the competition. In addition, a few years ago, traditional banks started to face new competition with the development of web-only banks. In such banks, there are less personal relationships, with no face-to-face contact. Those banks do not have physical branches.

There is a trend among banks towards a focus on the new electronic relationship. It is necessary for banks offering online services to confront a different kind of loyalty (e-loyalty), the loyalty being derived from the relationship an electronic customer has with electronic commerce, as a great deal of customers will do their banking mainly if not completely on the internet. To reach these electronic customers and to satisfy them, in order to make them loyal, will impose a major challenge.

The purpose of this paper is to examine how web-only banks achieve customer loyalty. To fulfill our purpose we have studied two cases, one web-only bank on the German market, ING-DiBa and one on the French market, Covefi. We conducted two interviews with employees in the customer analysis and service department to find out what they do to manage customer loyalty. With a frame of reference and two qualitative case studies as a foundation, we have been able to draw important conclusions about customer loyalty in web-only banking.

Both banks understand what a loyal customer is, but they do not have a strategy to manage customer loyalty over the Internet. Both banks accomplish in making sure preconditions for customer loyalty, like satisfaction and trust are met. We conclude that it is more difficult to achieve loyalty over the Internet. Nevertheless it is just as important as customer loyalty in traditional banking encounters. Furthermore, we see room for improvements for both banks. We presented recommendations in the end how obtaining loyalty over the Internet can be facilitated.

Abstract:
To date only a limited number of studies have focused on teacher-led functional assessments in the mainstream classroom. This purpose of this study was to observe what happens when a general education teacher attempts to individualise parts of her programme to meet the unique teaching needs of certain children. The participating teacher identified eight children with behavioural and/or learning needs in her classroom. For each of the children with learning difficulties the teacher was able to formulate a function-based hypotheses and design an effective intervention after being provided with some written support. The teacher did not form a function based hypothesis for a child with behavioural difficulties. The subsequent intervention was not function based and failed to decrease the problem behaviour. In each of the eight remaining case studies the teacher required support from the researcher in order to implement, supervise, and maintain an individualised intervention.

Gellerman, Emil, and Boer Aukje de. "The effect of busy boards on Tobin's Q in Swedish firms : studying firm size and ownership concentration as potential modifiers." Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Företagsekonomiska institutionen, 2016. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-297738.

Abstract:
Increasingly there is debate concerning the number of board memberships a person can hold before loss of quality in their work. Previous research has not reached consensus regarding the effect of busy directors on firm performance. We therefore hypothesize there are modifying factors affecting that relationship, namely firm size and the presence of concentrated ownership. We designed a quantitative study to study first the effect of busyness on firm performance in Swedish listed companies, and secondly, to study the effect of the modifying factors on that relationship. It was found that busyness is positively related with firm performance measured by Tobin’s Q, and that concentrated ownership affects that relationship such that companies with more concentrated ownerships also have higher Tobin’s Q values. There was however partial support that firm size is a negative modifier on the relationship between busyness and firm performance. Overall our results indicate that more regulation that limits board busyness is not currently warranted.

Safdar, Komal. "Better queue management in a busy public hospital of a developing country without appointment system : an application using data envelopment analysis." Thesis, Aston University, 2016. http://publications.aston.ac.uk/28685/.

Full text
Abstract:
Queuing is a key efficiency criterion in any service industry, including Healthcare. Almost all queue management studies are dedicated to improving an existing Appointment System. In developing countries such as Pakistan, there are no Appointment Systems for outpatients, resulting in excessive wait times. Additionally, excessive overloading, limited resources and cumbersome procedures lead to over-whelming queues. Despite numerous Healthcare applications, Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has not been applied for queue assessment. The current study aims to extend DEA modelling and demonstrate its usefulness by evaluating the queue system of a busy public hospital in a developing country, Pakistan, where all outpatients are walk-in; along with construction of a dynamic framework dedicated towards the implementation of the model. The inadequate allocation of doctors/personnel was observed as the most critical issue for long queues. Hence, the Queuing-DEA model has been developed such that it determines the ‘required’ number of doctors/personnel. The results indicated that given extensive wait times or length of queue, or both, led to high target values for doctors/personnel. Hence, this crucial information allows the administrators to ensure optimal staff utilization and controlling the queue pre-emptively, minimizing wait times. The dynamic framework constructed, specifically targets practical implementation of the Queuing-DEA model in resource-poor public hospitals of developing countries such as Pakistan; to continuously monitor rapidly changing queue situation and display latest required personnel. Consequently, the wait times of subsequent patients can be minimized, along with dynamic staff scheduling in the absence of appointments. This dynamic framework has been designed in Excel, requiring minimal training and work for users and automatic update features, with complex technical aspects running in the background. The proposed model and the dynamic framework has the potential to be applied in similar public hospitals, even in other developing countries, where appointment systems for outpatients are non-existent.

Tucker, Faye Bronwyn. "An assessment of the Isoniazid preventative therapy programme for children in a busy primary healthcare clinic in Nelson Mandela Bay, Eastern Cape Province." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/15737.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Tuberculosis is the second leading cause of death from an infectious cause worldwide having claimed approximately 1.5 million lives in 2013. Estimates suggest that children account for about six percent of the total number of TB cases globally, however in South Africa this figure is much higher (15%). Young children are at particularly high risk of mortality and significant morbidity from TB. Despite clear evidence that Isoniazid preventative therapy (IPT) can reduce the risk of progression from TB infection to disease, IPT has been a poorly implemented component of national TB control programmes, especially in high TB-burden areas, including South Africa. This study aims to determine current practices regarding the identification and management of child contacts < 5 years in an area with an extremely high TB incidence rate where little background data exists on the topic. It will also assess the operational aspects of the TB control programme relating to the spread of TB to children. Methodology: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted using a retrospective review of clinic records from infectious index patients aged ≥15 years at West End clinic in the Nelson Mandela Bay health district in the Eastern Cape Province. A sample size of 246 child contacts (<5 years) was required to obtain a 95% confidence index with a 5% precision. This is based on 20% of eligible child contacts < 5years receiving IPT, as described by van Wyk, et al. (2010). 491 Index patient records were assessed in order to identify 261 child contacts < 5 years of age. Results: Contacts were generally well recorded with only 12.5% of index patient folders having no contacts documented although only 0.53 child contacts <5years were identified per index patient. A total of 261 child contacts < 5 years were identified and of these 184 (70.5%) were screened for TB. Two contacts were started on TB treatment and 108/184 (58.7%) were initiated on TB prevention therapy. For the remaining 74 (40.2%) children who were screened there was no documentation of further management. Adherence to IPT was extremely poor with only 4 (3.7%) children who started TB prevention completing the 24 week course. Female index patients were more likely to have contacts documented and to bring their contacts for screening. Contacts of index 16 patients who had previous TB were less likely to be screened and initiated on TB prevention therapy. The results of the assessment of programmatic factors relating to childhood TB control showed that patients were diagnosed and were rapidly initiated on treatment (median time of 5 days from sputum collection to commencement of treatment). It took a median of 4 days for children to be screened once the index patient had started treatment and a further 2 days (median) for child contacts < 5 years to be initiated on preventative therapy. Conclusion and recommendations: The results of this study are in keeping with those obtained in other settings with a high burden of TB. Although the documentation of contacts in this setting was relatively good, child contacts < 5 years were poorly identified and the fall-out of children at each step from identification to preventative treatment completion was still unacceptably high. Contacts of men and retreatment index patients are at particularly high risk of poor management. Recommendations are made for interventions at national and local level to improve contact management and the documentation thereof.

August, Nathaniel J. "Medium Access Control in Impulse-Based Ultra Wideband Ad Hoc and Sensor Networks." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27594.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates distributed medium access control (MAC) protocols custom tailored to both impulse-based ultra wideband (I-UWB) radios and to large ad hoc and sensor networks. I-UWB is an attractive radio technology for large ad hoc and sensor networks due to its robustness to multipath fading effects, sub-centimeter ranging ability, and low-cost, low-power hardware. Current medium access control (MAC) protocols for I-UWB target small wireless personal area networks (WPANs) and cellular networks, but they are not suitable for large, multihop ad hoc and sensor networks. Therefore, this paper proposes a new type of MAC protocol that enables ad hoc and sensor networks to realize the benefits of I-UWB radios. First, we propose a method to overcome the challenges of quickly, reliably, and efficiently sensing medium activity in an ultra wideband network. This provides a base MAC protocol similar to carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) in narrowband systems. Next, we propose to exploit the unique signaling of I-UWB to improve performance over the base MAC protocol without the associated overhead of similar improvements in narrowband systems. I-UWB enables a distributed multichannel MAC protocol, which improves throughput. I-UWB also facilitates a busy signal MAC protocol, which reduces wasted energy from corrupt packets. Finally, because the I-UWB Physical Layer and MAC Layer affect the network and application layers, we propose a cross-layer adaptive system that optimizes performance. Physical Layer simulations show that both the base protocol and the improvements are practical for an I-UWB radio. Networks level simulations characterize the performance of the proposed MAC protocols and compare them to existing MAC protocols.

This extended essay explores a historical investigation into the connections between women and machines, particularly focusing on the traditionally gendered processes of sewing, weaving and other processes deemed ‘handicrafts’ and how they parallel techniques in the evolution of the technologies we recognise today. Within this relationship, the nature of these acts to provide comfort is investigated and related to the practice of art making. This historical lineage is examined in the present day where digital and electronic technologies impact everyday life and cause new a brand of anxieties that require a fresh approach to healing and soothing. Through the analysis of this research my practical input and output are informed and result in the development of an installation of objects that examine the electronic object and how it can be imbued with or reflect these realities.

Abstract:
Women in visual media are generally underrepresented and stereotypically portrayed.  It is a very undifferentiated image, that few women can actually identify with. Norm-breaking characters can have an essential part and a positive influence on humans identity formation, research shows. The purpose of this study is to examine eight women’s stories about how television shows had an impact on their identity formation, primarily focusing on Hannah from the very popular tv-series Girls. Hannah has been described as a plain and slightly overweight heroine, not suited for modern television. The study is built on a qualitative science-method through semi-structured interviews, with subjective stories as focal point. The selection of interviewees identify themselves as women and have seen Girls. The study shows that Hannah works as a role model by inspiring the interviewees to acknowledge and accept their self-view, in addition to increasing their bravery and place amongst other people. Thenceforth, they felt that there was a small representation of strong female characters on modern television and saw a necessity for Hannah in popular culture.

Abstract:
In this report, the security in integrated systems within vehicles is evaluated. Is the CAN bus and the devices that communicate with it secure? What are the weaknesses in security when modern technologies are implemented in vehicles and connected to the CAN bus?If a vehicle is attacked, the risk of the attacker's success with the attack is quite large. There are several risks and security holes with modern technology, for example. built-in media system in vehicles. We have researched how easy it is to retrieve information from the vehicle and what can be done with this information, using both other scientific reports and a physical examination using an application that were developed.By reading using Bluetooth from the OBD2 connector, information such as signals to unlock the vehicle or press the gas pedal can be read from the vehicle. Certain information is hidden for the normal user, such as a press of the gas pedal. This information must be obtained by for example, reading hidden packages. This can be done by tracing packages through various applications, such as Wireshark. Had this information been easy to access, it could be used in a malicious way. Should the command to press the gas be controlled wirelessly, this could create major and dangerous problems. This is something that is being investigated in the report, how to proceed and what ways a vehicle can be attacked. An application was developed to investigate what information that can be relatively easily extracted. Parameters such as speed or rounds per minute on the engine are examples of this information. Using an OBD2 device, the application communicates with the vehicle. The application retrieves information about a trip from start to stop and then it’s able to report this information. Information is displayed to the user in the application both while the vehicle is traveling and then a summary of the entire trip. The application can be used to save one’s journey, if for example, you want to report your trips to your employer. The trips are stored both in a database and locally on your phone with the possibility of uploading to a web server.ivThe application saves all information you selected about your trip and can also be customized with parameters depending on your needs. It also has a field of use for monitoring your driving, for example if you at some time during the trip reach abnormal values, such as far too high rounds per minute or something similar.

"De europeiska busskarosserierna – inte så attraktiva som förväntat : En undersökning och analys av den busstillverkande marknaden i Europa med hänsyn till Företag A och busskarosserier." Thesis, KTH, Industriell marknadsföring, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-187696.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the  project was to research and analyse the European bus market to see if Company A could expand their business and reach the potential new market. In order to do so all the market players were first mapped. These were then analysed to see if the market was attractive and to see which of them could be potential customers and potential competitors. The bus manufacturers' product requirements and product preferences were examined to see if Company A could offer them  some of their existing products. Interviews were  conducted with Company A, their suppliers, their customers and their customers' customers to get a better understanding of the market,  Company A's existing products, the products they need and what actually was requested on the market. An  analysis  of Company A's potential expansion was made using Ansoff's theories of growth strategy, where it appeared that the  only possibility for Company A to expand to Europé in the current situation was through a market development. A SWOT analysis was therefore made where Company A's strengths  and weaknesses were compared to the potential market opportunities and threats.  There  it was clear that greatest strengths of Company A today were not the qualities that were wanted on the market. Company A did not currently have the opportunity to compete for the market opportunities present and the market threats were imminent. A competitive analysis based  on  Porter's five forces made it clear that the European market for buses have low entry and exit barriers, powerful buyers and a high industry competition.  His makes it an unattractive market where there is chance for a stable but low  return.  It was therefore  concluded that the market was not as interesting as it had been in the initial position. The recommendation for Company A was  therefore  that they should not focus on trying to expand to the European bus market in their present situation. To conclude the report with a more positive connotation some other recommendations for what Company A could do instead were added.

Bush, Eliot Christen. "Evolution and Scaling in Mammalian Brains." Thesis, Connect to this title online, 2004. https://thesis.library.caltech.edu/1191/1/eliot-bush-thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:

Here I look at three stages in the evolutionary development of mammalian brains. Chapter one addresses how connectivity in neocortex scales with brain size. This is of evolutionary interest because it helps define the basic mammalian condition. Neocortical white matter increases disproportionately in large brains. This might reflect increases in the number of connections per neuron. It might also reflect scaling in axon diameter. I compare these hypotheses by examining white matter-gray matter scaling in cerebellum. Because the white matter of cerebellum lacks cortico-cortical connections, the connectivity theory predicts that cerebellar white matter should not hyperscale relative to gray matter. I have measured white matter and gray matter volume in a large sample of mammals and I find that cerebellar white matter does not hyperscale. This supports the proposition that neocortical hyperscaling reflects an increase in the number of connections per neuron in large brains.

In chapter two I use independent contrasts analysis to examine the scaling of frontal cortex in a large sample of mammals. I find significant differences in scaling between primates and carnivores. Primate frontal cortex hyperscales relative to the rest of neocortex and the rest of the brain, and the primate slope is significantly greater than that for carnivores. This suggests that there are substantial differences in frontal cortex structure and development between the two groups. Combined with with anatomical differences, it suggests that primates have evolved a number of unique adaptations in frontal cortex.

Chapter three examines the evolution of brain size in anthropoid primates. Living anthropoids have larger brains than strepsirrhines. What about early anthropoid fossils? I measure brain size in the early anthropoid Parapithecus grangeri using computed tomography. I find that relative to the living anthropoids, Parapithecus had a small brain for its body size. Thus large brains did not develop at the same time as a number of other anthropoid adaptations.

Jansson, Birk, and Mikael Jarsäter. "Concept study - lower exhaust gas temperature in Scania buses." Thesis, KTH, Maskinkonstruktion (Inst.), 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-141775.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis aims to lower the exhaust gas temperature on the coming EU6 Scania buses D7 and Otto gas and is carried out as a final part of the studies in the mechanical engineering program, KTH Stockholm. Euro 6, a new emission standard requirements for heavy duty trucks and buses, puts new demands on the amount of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides that can be emitted. This led to that Scania has developed and improved their after treatment systems. The new after treatment systems generates high exhaust temperatures, and Scania have expressed a desire to reduce these to create a safer environment around the bus.The thesis started with a thorough feasibility study, where the current exhaust systems and its components were studied. Solutions to lower exhaust temperatures were studied, both in the automotive industry and in other fields. The concepts that were developed would be analyzed through CFD simulations, why basic fluid mechanics were studied. Two different exhaust systems were to be analyzed, one with a gas engine and roof outlet and one with a diesel engine and ground outlet. A total of eight concepts were presented, in which five were determined to undergo CFD simulations.A competitor analysis was conducted in which three different diffusers from competing bus and truck manufacturers were CFD simulated. The results showed that the diffusers were superior to the other concepts. The diffuser designed in this project performed well in comparison to the diffusers from competing bus and trucks manufacturers, but it was considered to be expensive and difficult to manufacture. New diffuser designs were suggested, which are believed to have the same good qualities but cheaper to manufacture. The authors recommend Scania to perform field tests of the redesigned diffusers, and also try the ones designed by their competitors. Also, Scania should investigate how a venturi solution can be optimized.

Abstract:
Previous research indicates that it is possible to psychologically affect people to increase their seat belt use on public transport (Young, et al., 2008). The study's hypothesis is that bus drivers can affect passengers' psychologically to use seat belts on public transport by delivering requests. The research questions are whether drivers can affect passengers with a neutral, pressuring, and/or humoristic request, how the seat belt usage appears within different age groups, if there is a difference between the sexes in seat belt usage, and if passengers' habits influence their seat belt usage. Four experimental groups were observed, one of which was the control group. The participants were passengers on a bus traveling from Lidköping to Skövde. 40 participants of the 93 observed were interviewed. Observations of the participants' seat belt use were conducted before and after the delivered request. The results of the observations showed no significant difference in seat belt use after the given request. Neither was there a significant difference in seat belt use between the sexes or a difference between the passengers' seat belt use at the time of the interviews and their habits of using the seat belt on public transport. The results of the interviews showed a significant difference between age groups in seatbelt use. It was suggested that requests from the bus driver would increase the seat belt use, although the observational results were not significant. Furthermore if the seat belts were more comfortable and flexible the seat belt use might increase. Young adults use seat belts less than middle aged adults; therefore, focus should possibly be on increasing the seat belt use of young adults.

Abstract:
The business plan that we develop in the present thesis consists in the creation of a company orientated to offering real time information with a mobile app to improve the experience of trasport users. The methodology of this business plan consists in realizing a market research to define the client´s objectives and a business´model interesting for them. In addition, we include a marketing, finance and organizational plan. The service consists of a mobile app that will take the experience of taxi´s apps and the GPS technology to trace public transport units in real time, so that they could know the exact moment in which the units will come to the nearest transports´ terminal. Our clients' segment, the public transport´s of Lima Metropolitana who possess a mobile device and have the experience of interacting with mobiles apps and form a part of the Economically Active Population (PEA) and their ages range are between 24 and 44 years. On the basis of this opportunity a series of strategies has been designed at operational, marketing, human resources and finance level, to come to each of them with some attributes that separate it from the current competition. The company will have the vision of being a leading global company in public transport information in big metropolis, compromised with the excellence in the quality of the information, top technology and innovation. At operative level, our goal is to generate superior profitabilities up to 20%, to acomplish that is required an initial investment of S/2,539,010 that will be destined to the adquisition of fixed assets and operative management for the first 5 months of company operations.

Bus service reliability has always been a top concern for transit agencies and their customers. Unfortunately, there are several factors detrimental to reliable bus service. Outside influences such as weather, traffic, and road construction can wreak havoc on even the best laid plans. Internally, poor planning, insufficient maintenance, and differing operator abilities can work to undermine bus service reliability. To help counteract these problems, transit agencies typically deploy a team of supervisors who are responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and restoring reliable service. To do their job effectively, supervisors require high levels of operational information and a reliable communications system. These resources, however, can vary in their availability and may not be at ideal levels. This research proposes a framework to aid in the planning of bus supervision deployment given different levels of information, communications, and personnel. The primary focus of the framework is the deployment of post, mobile, and control center supervisors given an agency's current level of information and communication resources. The application of the framework begins with a service reliability and supervision resource assessment.
(cont.) Based on these assessments, a system level personnel deployment strategy is developed and then evaluated. Two case studies - the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Route 20 and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Silver Line - are presented as applications of the proposed framework. Findings suggest that personnel deployment at both agencies is suboptimal: both agencies deploy too many post supervisors given current resource levels, and for the CTA, too few mobile supervisors. Findings also suggest that putting increased information and communication resources in place should lead agencies to have post supervisors only at the busiest most critical locations, mobile supervisors for incident response and reallocate many field-based supervisors to the control center for headway and schedule management.
