Full textA longstanding folk belief suggests that ?busy? people possess the ability to get more done than others. Busyness, defined as the demands of everyday life, has been shown to generate cognitive load, which has been called ?cognitive busyness.? Although most cognitive theory would deny the possibility that cognitive load may enhance performance, some recent research may support the possibility. Cowan's 1988 information-processing model was used to study how measures of everyday busyness correlated with performance on cognitive tasks. The research question addressed whether any combination of such measures, in combination with working memory, could predict performance on such tasks. 92 participants, paid workers with Amazon Mechanical Turk, engaged in an online process, starting with completion of a validated self-report instrument to measure busyness. They then participated in 2 activities, structured as games and designed to measure working memory and cognitive performance. Multiple regressions, linear and nonlinear, were used to identify significant predictors of performance. Results of the analyses did not reveal any evidence for significant relationships between the variables. Additionally, ?volitional busyness? did not appear to enhance, or even affect, performance on a planning task. Further research exploring the effect of these variables on a working memory-based task may be worthwhile, if only to confirm the present findings. This project might benefit linguists tracking semantic change, showing how a term may adopt an entirely different meaning and suggesting further refinement in identifying such shifts over the years; psychologists exploring cognitive load and its effects; and social psychologists interested in making corrections to popular perceptions of the value of tradition gender-associated tasks.

In the face of large increases in the number of passengers and flights, busy airports worldwide have been trying to optimize operating efficiency and throughput and minimize congestion on a daily basis. In the case of departures, measures can be taken at the gate, on the taxiway system or at the runway queue to minimize departure delays and/or the cost of unavoidable delays. This cost includes needless fuel consumption and noxious emissions. In this thesis, we focus primarily on runway queue optimization. The first part of this work consists of designing a generic simulation which models specific days of operations at an airport. Using as input the schedule of operations specific to the modeled airport, the simulation processes all departures and stores the characteristic times of the process for each departing aircraft. The quantities of interest are either incrementally computed by the simulation or modeled using probability distributions derived from airport-specific data. We then present a dynamic programming approach to sequencing departing aircraft at the runway queue. Two algorithms are presented based on the idea of Constrained Position Shifting, which maintains a high level of fairness in the order in which aircraft gain access to runways, while also improving efficiency by comparison to First Come First Served sequencing. The objective of the first algorithm is to minimize makespan, and that of the second to minimize delays. We then focus on a specific airport, which has been experiencing one of the fastest growth rates in the industry. We analyze the output of our simulation as applied to this airport and accumulate insights about congestion at the departure runways. We next apply this sequencing algorithm to this specific airport using multiple demand profiles that represent both the current traffic levels, as well as anticipated future ones that would result in more congestion. We give quantitative arguments to confirm the positive impact of the optimization on the airport's operations. We also emphasize the importance of the aircraft mix on the techniques' performance and show that the sequencing algorithms provide higher benefits (in terms of reducing delays) as the mix becomes more heterogeneous.

Full textThe media plays an extremely important role in the prevailing social and cultural environment. They emphasise that it is the reality they reflect, which converts the medial representation of women into notions of how they should be and look to be a part of the reality that is deemed important enough to appear in the media. They thus act as an ideological tool, as these notions contribute to the maintenance of the gender roles, stereotypes and ideals that society has still to shed. We found the creation and maintenance of this ‘mediagender’ highly topical and interesting for further studying. We chose to focus on three womendominating programs, out of the steady stream of reality-TV that is produced and that occupies today’s TV- listings. Our purpose of this study was to, through a gendertheoretical and socialconstructionistic approach, semiotically analyse and compare the gender roles, stereotypes and ideals that we thought existed in Swedish and American reality-TV. We intended to, with the help of two underlying themes, examine how ‘feminine gender’ was represented and constructed in speech and image, and also conventions and stereotypical counter images that may exist in the depiction of this. Based on our analysis, combined with our theoretical framework, it has in our discussion been revealed that there are both similarities and differences between Swedish and American reality-TV. In both cases, women have the same opinion in regards to the female ideal image, and its associated body and beauty ideals. However, there are differences in Swedish and American media and the way which they portray women. American media showed its women as highly multitalented as she bears responsibility for both career and family, while the Swedish woman in American conditions considered uninclined to both work and be responsible for the household. We have in our analysis been aware of the impact that social constructionism has had on the prejudices we have grown up with, and thus the prejudices and stereotypes we have discovered in our chosen programs.

Full textTraditionally, banks have always had a close relationship with their customers. They often knew them as individuals, and satisfied their needs through personal customized services. Recently, the development of electronic banking or e-banking has influenced the increasing competition within the banking industry. E-banking customers are nowadays just “a click away” from the competition. In addition, a few years ago, traditional banks started to face new competition with the development of web-only banks. In such banks, there are less personal relationships, with no face-to-face contact. Those banks do not have physical branches.
There is a trend among banks towards a focus on the new electronic relationship. It is necessary for banks offering online services to confront a different kind of loyalty (e-loyalty), the loyalty being derived from the relationship an electronic customer has with electronic commerce, as a great deal of customers will do their banking mainly if not completely on the internet. To reach these electronic customers and to satisfy them, in order to make them loyal, will impose a major challenge.
The purpose of this paper is to examine how web-only banks achieve customer loyalty. To fulfill our purpose we have studied two cases, one web-only bank on the German market, ING-DiBa and one on the French market, Covefi. We conducted two interviews with employees in the customer analysis and service department to find out what they do to manage customer loyalty. With a frame of reference and two qualitative case studies as a foundation, we have been able to draw important conclusions about customer loyalty in web-only banking.
Both banks understand what a loyal customer is, but they do not have a strategy to manage customer loyalty over the Internet. Both banks accomplish in making sure preconditions for customer loyalty, like satisfaction and trust are met. We conclude that it is more difficult to achieve loyalty over the Internet. Nevertheless it is just as important as customer loyalty in traditional banking encounters. Furthermore, we see room for improvements for both banks. We presented recommendations in the end how obtaining loyalty over the Internet can be facilitated.

Full textIn this report, the security in integrated systems within vehicles is evaluated. Is the CAN bus and the devices that communicate with it secure? What are the weaknesses in security when modern technologies are implemented in vehicles and connected to the CAN bus?If a vehicle is attacked, the risk of the attacker's success with the attack is quite large. There are several risks and security holes with modern technology, for example. built-in media system in vehicles. We have researched how easy it is to retrieve information from the vehicle and what can be done with this information, using both other scientific reports and a physical examination using an application that were developed.By reading using Bluetooth from the OBD2 connector, information such as signals to unlock the vehicle or press the gas pedal can be read from the vehicle. Certain information is hidden for the normal user, such as a press of the gas pedal. This information must be obtained by for example, reading hidden packages. This can be done by tracing packages through various applications, such as Wireshark. Had this information been easy to access, it could be used in a malicious way. Should the command to press the gas be controlled wirelessly, this could create major and dangerous problems. This is something that is being investigated in the report, how to proceed and what ways a vehicle can be attacked. An application was developed to investigate what information that can be relatively easily extracted. Parameters such as speed or rounds per minute on the engine are examples of this information. Using an OBD2 device, the application communicates with the vehicle. The application retrieves information about a trip from start to stop and then it’s able to report this information. Information is displayed to the user in the application both while the vehicle is traveling and then a summary of the entire trip. The application can be used to save one’s journey, if for example, you want to report your trips to your employer. The trips are stored both in a database and locally on your phone with the possibility of uploading to a web server.ivThe application saves all information you selected about your trip and can also be customized with parameters depending on your needs. It also has a field of use for monitoring your driving, for example if you at some time during the trip reach abnormal values, such as far too high rounds per minute or something similar.

"De europeiska busskarosserierna – inte så attraktiva som förväntat : En undersökning och analys av den busstillverkande marknaden i Europa med hänsyn till Företag A och busskarosserier." Full textThe purpose of the project was to research and analyse the European bus market to see if Company A could expand their business and reach the potential new market. In order to do so all the market players were first mapped. These were then analysed to see if the market was attractive and to see which of them could be potential customers and potential competitors. The bus manufacturers' product requirements and product preferences were examined to see if Company A could offer them some of their existing products. Interviews were conducted with Company A, their suppliers, their customers and their customers' customers to get a better understanding of the market, Company A's existing products, the products they need and what actually was requested on the market. An analysis of Company A's potential expansion was made using Ansoff's theories of growth strategy, where it appeared that the only possibility for Company A to expand to Europé in the current situation was through a market development. A SWOT analysis was therefore made where Company A's strengths and weaknesses were compared to the potential market opportunities and threats. There it was clear that greatest strengths of Company A today were not the qualities that were wanted on the market. Company A did not currently have the opportunity to compete for the market opportunities present and the market threats were imminent. A competitive analysis based on Porter's five forces made it clear that the European market for buses have low entry and exit barriers, powerful buyers and a high industry competition. His makes it an unattractive market where there is chance for a stable but low return. It was therefore concluded that the market was not as interesting as it had been in the initial position. The recommendation for Company A was therefore that they should not focus on trying to expand to the European bus market in their present situation. To conclude the report with a more positive connotation some other recommendations for what Company A could do instead were added.
Bush, Eliot Christen. "Evolution and Scaling in Mammalian Brains." Thesis, Connect to this title online, 2004. https://thesis.library.caltech.edu/1191/1/eliot-bush-thesis.pdf.
Full textHere I look at three stages in the evolutionary development of mammalian brains. Chapter one addresses how connectivity in neocortex scales with brain size. This is of evolutionary interest because it helps define the basic mammalian condition. Neocortical white matter increases disproportionately in large brains. This might reflect increases in the number of connections per neuron. It might also reflect scaling in axon diameter. I compare these hypotheses by examining white matter-gray matter scaling in cerebellum. Because the white matter of cerebellum lacks cortico-cortical connections, the connectivity theory predicts that cerebellar white matter should not hyperscale relative to gray matter. I have measured white matter and gray matter volume in a large sample of mammals and I find that cerebellar white matter does not hyperscale. This supports the proposition that neocortical hyperscaling reflects an increase in the number of connections per neuron in large brains.
In chapter two I use independent contrasts analysis to examine the scaling of frontal cortex in a large sample of mammals. I find significant differences in scaling between primates and carnivores. Primate frontal cortex hyperscales relative to the rest of neocortex and the rest of the brain, and the primate slope is significantly greater than that for carnivores. This suggests that there are substantial differences in frontal cortex structure and development between the two groups. Combined with with anatomical differences, it suggests that primates have evolved a number of unique adaptations in frontal cortex.
Chapter three examines the evolution of brain size in anthropoid primates. Living anthropoids have larger brains than strepsirrhines. What about early anthropoid fossils? I measure brain size in the early anthropoid Parapithecus grangeri using computed tomography. I find that relative to the living anthropoids, Parapithecus had a small brain for its body size. Thus large brains did not develop at the same time as a number of other anthropoid adaptations.

Full textPrevious research indicates that it is possible to psychologically affect people to increase their seat belt use on public transport (Young, et al., 2008). The study's hypothesis is that bus drivers can affect passengers' psychologically to use seat belts on public transport by delivering requests. The research questions are whether drivers can affect passengers with a neutral, pressuring, and/or humoristic request, how the seat belt usage appears within different age groups, if there is a difference between the sexes in seat belt usage, and if passengers' habits influence their seat belt usage. Four experimental groups were observed, one of which was the control group. The participants were passengers on a bus traveling from Lidköping to Skövde. 40 participants of the 93 observed were interviewed. Observations of the participants' seat belt use were conducted before and after the delivered request. The results of the observations showed no significant difference in seat belt use after the given request. Neither was there a significant difference in seat belt use between the sexes or a difference between the passengers' seat belt use at the time of the interviews and their habits of using the seat belt on public transport. The results of the interviews showed a significant difference between age groups in seatbelt use. It was suggested that requests from the bus driver would increase the seat belt use, although the observational results were not significant. Furthermore if the seat belts were more comfortable and flexible the seat belt use might increase. Young adults use seat belts less than middle aged adults; therefore, focus should possibly be on increasing the seat belt use of young adults.

Full textThe business plan that we develop in the present thesis consists in the creation of a company orientated to offering real time information with a mobile app to improve the experience of trasport users. The methodology of this business plan consists in realizing a market research to define the client´s objectives and a business´model interesting for them.

Bus service reliability has always been a top concern for transit agencies and their customers. Unfortunately, there are several factors detrimental to reliable bus service. Outside influences such as weather, traffic, and road construction can wreak havoc on even the best laid plans. Internally, poor planning, insufficient maintenance, and differing operator abilities can work to undermine bus service reliability. To help counteract these problems, transit agencies typically deploy a team of supervisors who are responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and restoring reliable service. To do their job effectively, supervisors require high levels of operational information and a reliable communications system. These resources, however, can vary in their availability and may not be at ideal levels. This research proposes a framework to aid in the planning of bus supervision deployment given different levels of information, communications, and personnel. The primary focus of the framework is the deployment of post, mobile, and control center supervisors given an agency's current level of information and communication resources. The application of the framework begins with a service reliability and supervision resource assessment.
(cont.) Based on these assessments, a system level personnel deployment strategy is developed and then evaluated. Two case studies - the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Route 20 and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) Silver Line - are presented as applications of the proposed framework. Findings suggest that personnel deployment at both agencies is suboptimal: both agencies deploy too many post supervisors given current resource levels, and for the CTA, too few mobile supervisors. Findings also suggest that putting increased information and communication resources in place should lead agencies to have post supervisors only at the busiest most critical locations, mobile supervisors for incident response and reallocate many field-based supervisors to the control center for headway and schedule management.
