<p> Copper hydride (CuH) has been shown to enable a number of selective 1,2- and 1,4-reductions when complexed with the appropriate ligand, yet the allylic substitution chemistry of CuH has been much less studied. This dissertation describes the further study of CuH to perform sequential reductions on Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) adducts. A novel hetero Diels-Alder reaction has been developed to facilitate the synthesis of annelated pyridines as models for pyridoacridine alkaloids. The key reaction is based on an intramolecular Diels-Alder reaction of an aza-1,3-butadiene with an appropriate dienophile, to yield the desired annelated pyridine. An extension of this methodology is to exploit the Eglinton copper (IT) dimerisation of terminal acetylenes. The infrared, Raman and ultraviolet spectra of pyridine-d0 and pyridine-d5 were recorded and assigned with a focus on the low-frequency vibrational modes in the S1(n,pi*) electronic excited state. An energy map for the low-frequency modes was constructed and the data for the v18 mode allowed a highly anharmonic one-dimensional potential energy function to be determined for the S1 excited state.
