Abstract:
A library of polymers/oligomers with three different architectures was synthesised. Short chain, linear oligomers were produced by performing oxidative cleavage on a poly(butyl methacrylate-co-butadiene) polymer. Although butadiene is a gaseous monomer, it was found that careful control over the reaction conditions led to successful copolymerisation in an unpressurised reactor. Hyperbranched polymers of n-butyl methacrylate and t-butyl acrylate were synthesised by RAFT polymerisation with 4-vinylbenzyl-pyrrolecarbodithioate (CTA1) and 4-vinylbenzyl dithiobenzoate (CTA2). This thesis work is part of a larger synthesis project about alkyd resins from natural sources, copolymerized with methyl acrylate and n-butyl acrylates, which wil be used for coatings purpose. The aim is to control the copolymerization of methyl acrylate and n-butyl acrylate in RAFT miniemulsion. The research was divided into three parts. First the homopolymerization of methyl methacrylate and n-butyl acrylate was studied by varying different parameters such as the amount of surfactant, the amount of initiator, pH, and especially the RAFT agent. Then two macro RAFT agents were synthesized, a

The addition of the reducing sugars has a positive effect on the rate of ATRP. Up to 100% increase in the rate of polymerization was recorded, in some cases. Experimental data on the solubility of CO2 in methyl methacrylate (MMA) and butyl methacrylate (BMA) are reported at temperatures from 308 to 333 K and pressures in the range of 1 to 10 MPa. The corresponding measurements of the volumetric expansion of the liquid phase are also presented. The solubility data are correlated with the Peng-Robinson equation of state using two interaction parameters. Solubilities of CO2 as high as 80 mol% can be attained in both monomers in the range of pressure considered. A near-linear relationship is observed between pressure and liquid-phase composition.
