Abstract:
This essay uses ethnographic research conducted among Haitian Protestants in the Bahamas in 2005 and 2012 plus internet resources to document the belief among Haitian Protestants (Haitians who practice Protestant forms of Christianity) that Haiti supposedly made a pact with the Devil (Satan) as the result of Bwa Kayiman, a Vodou ceremony that launched the Haitian Revolution (1791–1803). Vodou is the syncretized religion indigenous to Haiti. I argue that this interpretation of Bwa Kayiman is an extension of the negative effects of the globalization of American Fundamentalist Christianity in Hai

Assessment of body composition can be useful in managing many clinical or public health conditions, including HIV. Most people living with HIV infection are in Africa where clinics may lack equipment, utilities or staff time for optimal body composition assessment. Thus, it is important to determine whether less expensive and more available and scalable methods can provide adequate information. We estimated body composition of 420 perinatally HIV-infected Zambian adolescents, aged 11–19 years, using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), bioelectrical impedance (BIA) and anthropometry: body m

Abstract This chapter discusses Egypt’s relationships with peoples and cultures to the south in Africa during the Middle Kingdom period, when they became increasingly complex due to the rise of a state in Upper Nubia centered at Kerma, as well as the Pan-Grave peoples in the Eastern Desert. Although the Egyptians built forts in Lower Nubia, where C-Group peoples were located, Kerma controlled the Nile in Upper Nubia and probably also overland routes to the southeast. One of the major challenges facing the mining sector is the identification of reliable and sustainable suppliers necessary for a matured asset management program (MAMP). This study contributes to that direction. The classical techniques have been used for the selection of sustainable suppliers for optimal operations of mines.
