Die Echtheit der Triosonate G-Dur BWV 1038 wird spätestens seit den Forschungen Ulrich Siegeles und Haußwalds angezweifelt, teils auch kategorisch ausgeschlossen. Eine Diskussion der Argumente zur Authentizität von Bachs Flötensonaten, wie sie von Robert L. Marshall (1978/79) vorgebracht wurden, führt zu dem Schluss, dass Bachs Autorschaft der Sonaten BWV 1031 und 1033, entgegen der Meinung Marshalls, weiterhin als zweifelhaft angesehen werden müsse. Als der amerikanische Bachforscher Robert Marshall seine Überlegungen zu Bachs Spätwerk veröffentlichte, versuchte er darzulegen, daß Bach während der 1730er und frühen 40er Jahren vom galanten Stil beeinflußt wurde. Im Gegenzug widerlegte Frederick Neumann die von Marshall aufgestellten Thesen und vertrat die herkömmliche Vorstellung, Bach habe sich in seinem Spätwerk historisch weit zurückliegenden Stilen zugewandt. Im Artikel werden C. P. E. Bachs Trio Wq 145 und die in der ersten Ausgabe des BWV unter 1036 geführte Frühfassung miteinander verglichen. Die Bedeutung der Frühfassung wird aufgrund der Tatsache hervorgehoben, dass der Bach-Sohn im Zuge seiner Gesamt-Revision seines Werkes Frühwerke und –Fassungen restlos vernichtet hatte.
