Background. Despite the vast musical material associated with the embodiment in the choral texture of the highest polyphonic form – the fugue, there is lack of the literature that would outline the specificity of this arrangement, its fundamental principles. Many researchers have addressed choral polyphony on the material of the works of various composers. However, the problem of identifying the specificity of the choral fugue hasn’t been highlighted yet as a major issue in domestic musicology. Among the most recent works, which include the consideration of the issue of choral fugue, we should

Abstract:
It is now widely acknowledged and accepted today that in the realm of his sacred music J. S. Bach was deeply influenced not only by the liturgy of the Lutheran Church but also by the writings of Martin Luther and other theologians. It is equally accepted that in general Bach used the same musical language in all of his works, sacred and secular. Might one therefore ask the question that if theology permeates the musical language of his sacred works, then does theology similarly undergird his freer instrumental works, works that stand well outside the liturgical constraints of his sacred music?

Analysis of Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685-1750) keyboard works and the study of fugue are often complemented by an understanding of Baroque rhetorical theory. In the Baroque Era, the principles of oration and argument established by Greek rhetoricians were thought of as analogous to musical ideas and forms. Notable Baroque theorists Joachim Burmeister (c. 1566-1629) and Johann Mattheson (1681-1764) related the fugal process to an active and elaborate discourse. They connected the basic parts of rhetorical disposition to fugue in an attempt to define and clarify its skeletal framework.
<

abstract: The core element of this research paper is an analysis of the B-flat minor prelude and fugue BWV 867. The author’s analysis is then compared with the main contributors to Bach’s analytical studies. An understanding of the work’s structure, together with its motivic and harmonic details, help the performer develop an interpretive approach to the work. Significant Bach scholars, including David Ledbetter and Peter Williams, are used as the source for the additional works to be studied.
