Catches and by-catches were surveyed in the commercial prawn trawl fleets of Botany Bay and Port Jackson, two estuaries in the Sydney metropolitan area (NSW, Australia). Catches were surveyed in all tows during replicate fishing trips in each month during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 prawn trawl seasons in each estuary. Significant species-specific variabilities in abundances were detected between estuaries, between years, and between early and late in the fishing season. The mean annual ratio of by-catch to catch of prawns (by weight) was 2.5 : 1 for Botany Bay and 1.8 : 1 for Port Jackson. A mean

Abstract The abundance of wild Atlantic salmon in the River Teno system has been monitored since the 1970s by estimating salmon catches and juvenile salmon densities at permanent electrofishing sites. Analysis of the time-series has shown significant relationships between juvenile densities (0+ and 1+) and subsequent 1SW and 2SW catches. Corresponding significant relationships have been detected between 1SW and 2SW female salmon in the catches and subsequent fry and parr densities. Monitoring juvenile densities allows evaluation of spawning escapement 1 and 2 years earlier, confirming the stoc

The pelagic longline fishery in the western Atlantic Ocean targeting swordfish (Xiphias gladius) and tunas (Thunnus spp.) historically has a high frequency of interactions with marine mammals, particularly pilot whales (Globicephala spp.) in the Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB) region. Typical pelagic longline hooks used in the MAB are size 16/0 "strong" hooks that straighten at 250 lb of pull (113 kg), while alternative "weak" hooks straighten at 150 lb of pull (68 kg). Oceanic pelagic shark species are under threat worldwide as fishing effort increases and they are taken as both targeted and bycatch. It is widely recognized that the life history characteristics of sharks make them inherently susceptible to overexploitation and as a result many shark-directed fisheries have collapsed. It is therefore essential that good-quality data are collected and analyzed in order to provide fisheries managers with the right information to manage these species sustainably. AbstractBruno Catalano’s sculpture Voyageurs brilliantly catches an impalpable, yet pervasive, feature of refugees’ representation: their invisibility. This may seem an oxymoron but throughout my visual analysis, and while looking for what was represented in the images studied, I have been struck by what is not there. Susan Sontag has defined photography as “grammar and, even more importantly, an ethics of seeing!” (Sontag 1973, 1). If Sontag is right when she affirms that photography makes things represented worth being seen, we may be led to think that, on the contrary, what is not photographed is not worth seeing. On this arbitrary decision over presence and absence, visibility and invisibility, hinges a very important dimension of the power of photography.

AbstractThis chapter provides a broad overview over the different hyperparameter tunings. It details the process of HPT, and discusses popular HPT approaches and difficulties. It focuses on surrogate optimization, because this is the most powerful approach. It introduces Sequential Parameter Optimization Toolbox (SPOT) as one typical surrogate method. SPOT is well established and maintained, open source, available on Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN), and catches mistakes. Because SPOT is open source and well documented, the human remains in the loop of decision-making. The introduction of SPOT is accompanied by detailed descriptions of the implementation and program code. This chapter particularly provides a deep insight in Kriging (aka Gaussian Process (GP) aka Bayesian Optimization (BO)) as a workhorse of this methodology. Thus it is very hands-on and practical.

Abstract:
AbstractRivers and peat swamps provide fishing grounds that can support the people living in Rantau Baru. Survey activities were conducted to describe the capture fisheries business carried out by fishers. The survey results show that 109 of 623 residents work as fishers, including women. Small-scale traditional fishing gear, such as traps, gillnets, mini long lines, set nets, pole and line, and cash nets are used, but traps are the dominant gear. Transportation to catch fish relies on boats, outboard motorboats, and fishing vessels. The outboard motorboat is widely used by fishers because of its small size and ability to navigate shallow and narrow waters. At least 44 species of fish from 10 families are caught and sold by fishers. Catches fluctuate according to the seasons, with increases during the flood season and decreases during the dry season. The fishing grounds also have potential for recreational fishing activities, as fishers earned US$37,242.67 from boat rental services for fishing-related tourism activities in 2019. This chapter provides an overview of the fishing activities and the economic value generated from fishing activities in the rivers and peat swamps of Rantau Baru.

In the conditions of sanctions, the provision of fish farming products to the population is of great importance. Due to intensive hydraulic engineering, poaching and a decrease in the quality of the environment, the population has declined sharply. To date, the catches of sturgeon are not able to ensure the volume of natural reproduction of these valuable species. At the moment, the population of the sturgeon is replenished exclusively by artificial means. Abstract:
Neural Style Transfer has recently demonstrated very exciting results which catches eyes in both academia and industry. Despite the amazing results, the principle of neural style transfer, especially why the Gram matrices could represent style remains unclear. In this paper, we propose a novel interpretation of neural style transfer by treating it as a domain adaptation problem. Specifically, we theoretically show that matching the Gram matrices of feature maps is equivalent to minimize the Maximum Mean Discrepancy (MMD) with the second order polynomial kernel. Thus, we argue that the essence

We propose a novel method to obtain a 3D model of a tree based on a single input image by fitting parameters for some procedural plant generator. Unlike other methods, our approach can work with any plant generator, treating it as a black-box function. It is also possible to specify the desired characteristics of the plant, such as the geometric complexity of the model or its size. We propose a similarity function between the given image and generated model, that better catches the significant differences between tree shapes. To find the appropriate parameter set, we use a specific variant of

Coastal fish monitoring in the autumn has been conducted in Kvädöfjärden using the gear net series since 1989. The fishing methodology was revised in 2018 and resulted in only one night of fishing per station in contrast to six consecutive nights. Only the first night of fishing over all years has hence been included in the analysis in this report. A survey with Nordic coastal multimesh gillnets was performed for the first time in autumn the same year as the revision and has been executed annually since then. The methodologies are not fully comparable, and has thus been analysed separately in

Abstract:
[Extract from Foreword] This ‘cruise report’ is the first of a short series, reflecting the aspiration of the Clyde Fishermen’s Association to establish a rigorous sampling scheme to monitor changes in the abundance and distribution of cod (and later other gadoid species) within the Clyde area. The Scottish Oceans Institute was approached to provide independent scientific support in early 2016. A series of surveys was then conducted in 2016, 2017 and 2018. In each survey the SOI provided observers, collected data and wrote up a cruise report detailing the methods used and the location, numbers
