Programming-by-Examples (PBE) involves synthesizing an "intended program" from a small set of user-provided input-output examples. A key PBE strategy has been to restrict the search to a carefully designed small domain-specific language (DSL) with "effectively-invertible" (EI) operators at the top and "effectively-enumerable" (EE) operators at the bottom. This facilitates an effective combination of top-down synthesis strategy (which backpropagates outputs over various paths in the DSL using inverse functions) with a bottom-up synthesis strategy (which propagates inputs over various paths in t

Any semantic manipulations, such as transforming dates, have to be manually encoded by the designer of the inductive programming framework. Symmetrical C40-carotenoids are efficiently produced by double Wittig olefination of the corrresponding C15-phosphonium salts with C10-dialdehyde. Industrial syntheses of lycopene-, astaxanthin-, and (3R,3'R)-zeaxanthin-C15-phosphonium salts are discussed. An efficient route to a monoprotected C10-dialdehyde for the synthesis of unsymmetrical C40-carotenoids is presented. Primary polyene allyl alcohols can be converted to the corresponding aldehydes by "TEMPO" oxidation. A high-yield synthesis of meso-zeaxanthin as an example for syntheses of unsymmetrical carotenoids is presented.

Abstract:
AbstractSketch is a popular program synthesis tool that solves for unknowns in a sketch or partial program. However, while Sketch is powerful, it does not directly support modular synthesis of dependencies, potentially limiting scalability. In this paper, we introduce Sketcham, a new technique that modularizes a regular sketch by automatically generating mocks—functions that approximate the behavior of complete implementations—from the sketch’s test suite. For example, if the function f originally calls g, Sketcham creates a mock $$g_m$$ g m from g’s tests and augments the sketch with a version of f that calls $$g_m$$ g m . This change allows the unknowns in f and g to be solved separately, enabling modular synthesis with no extra work from the Sketch user. We evaluated Sketcham on ten benchmarks, performing enough runs to show at a 95% confidence level that Sketcham improves median synthesis performance on six of our ten benchmarks by a factor of up to 5$$\times $$ × compared to plain Sketch, including one benchmark that times out on Sketch, while exhibiting similar performance on the remaining four. Our results show that Sketcham can achieve modular synthesis by automatically generating mocks from tests.

Abstract:
AbstractIn 2010, Fuhrmann et al. argued for enhancing modeler productivity by providing tooling that, put simply, combines the best of textual and graphical worlds. They referred to this as pragmatics, and argued that a key enabler would be the ability to automatically synthesize customized graphical views from a (possibly textual) model. The model would be the “ground truth” used, for example, for downstream code synthesis and simulation; the graphical views would typically be abstractions from the model serving various purposes, including documentation.Twelve years later, we reflect on their proposal, and illustrate the current state with the recently developed polyglot coordination language Lingua Franca (LF). LF has been designed with pragmatics in mind since early on, and some characteristics of LF make it particularly suited for pragmatics-aware programming and modeling. However, the underlying pragmatic principles are broadly applicable, and by now a set of mature open source tools is available for putting them into practice.

Abstract:
AbstractIn many synthesis problems, it can be essential to generate implementations which not only satisfy functional constraints but are also randomized to improve variety, robustness, or unpredictability. The recently-proposed framework of control improvisation (CI) provides techniques for the correct-by-construction synthesis of randomized systems subject to hard and soft constraints. However, prior work on CI has focused on qualitative specifications, whereas in robotic planning and other areas we often have quantitative quality metrics which can be traded against each other. For example, a designer of a patrolling security robot might want to know by how much the average patrol time needs to be increased in order to ensure that a particular aspect of the robot’s route is sufficiently diverse and hence unpredictable. In this paper, we enable this type of application by generalizing the CI problem to support quantitative soft constraints which bound the expected value of a given cost function, and randomness constraints which enforce diversity of the generated traces with respect to a given label function. We establish the basic theory of labelled quantitative CI problems, and develop efficient algorithms for solving them when the specifications are encoded by finite automata. We also provide an approximate improvisation algorithm based on constraint solving for any specifications encodable as Boolean formulas. We demonstrate the utility of our problem formulation and algorithms with experiments applying them to generate diverse near-optimal plans for robotic planning problems.

Anabolism: It’s the process of synthesis of compounds required to run the metabolic process of the organisms. Abstract:
Changes in climate and extreme weather are already increasing challenges for agriculture nationally and globally, and many of these impacts will continue into the future. This technical bulletin contains information and resources designed to help agricultural producers, service providers, and educators in the Midwest and Northeast regions of the United States integrate climate change considerations and action-oriented decisions into existing farm and conservation plans. An Adaptation Workbook provides producers a flexible, structured process to identify and assess climate change impacts,

Abstract:
This paper synthesises the findings of a set of country studies commissioned by the RISE Programme to explore the influence of politics and power on education sector policymaking and implementation. The synthesis groups the countries into three political-institutional contexts: Dominant contexts, where power is centred around a political leader and a hierarchical governance structure. As the Vietnam case details, top-down leadership potentially can provide a robust platform for improving learning outcomes. However, as the case studies of Ethiopia, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Tanzania illustrate, a

Abstract:
The importance of our research is due to the need to introduce into modern biological education methods of predictive modeling which are based on relevant factual material. Such an actual material may be the entry of natural and anthropic heavy metals into the soil at industrial areas. The object of this work: (i) to work out a predictive model of the total heavy metals inputs to soil at the Kryvyi Rih ore-mining & metallurgical District and (ii) to identify ways to use this model in biological education. White, Howard. Explaining what works: using causal chain analysis in systematic reviewsExplaining what works: using causal chain analysis in systematic reviews. Centre of Excellence for Development Impact and Learning (CEDIL), 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.51744/cmb4.

Abstract:
Systematic reviews summarise and synthesise the global evidence about an intervention. By incorporating causal chain analysis, a systematic review moves beyond the question of ‘does it work?’ to ‘why does it work, for whom, under what circumstances and at what cost?’. The CEDIL Methods Brief 4, ‘Using causal chain analysis in systematic reviews’, lays out what causal chain analysis is, the benefits of using it, and how to do so. The brief provides guidance on conducting a causal chain analysis by illustrating with an example of a systematic review on farmer field schools.

Abstract:
This report describes the diversity of experiences of people with life-limiting illnesses who were supported by hospices in the West Midlands during the pandemic. It is one of four cohort reports – the others focus on patients, carers, and frontline hospice staff respectively – that form the evidence base for a Policy Report into the impact of Covid-19 on hospices. In these reports we address the nine key themes that were identified as potentially important in our previous collaborative knowledge synthesis (MacArtney et al., 2021) and seek to address some of the policy gaps we identified in ou
