Résumé La démocratie moderne est marquée par une opposition fondamentale entre individu et communauté. Le concept de tradition d’Alasdair Maclntyre offre une solution à ce conflit, mais dont les sources rendent problématique une justification démocratique des normes sociales. Maclntyre va à l’encontre de l’idéal démocratique moderne et doit, sur cette base, être dissocié d’une éthique communautarienne pour laquelle l’idée de communauté suppose le respect intégral de l’autonomie rationnelle des individus. Cet article rend compte du problème de légitimité que pose la théorie de Maclntyre.
