Adipocyte dysfunction plays an important role in the obesity development. People with a body weight ~ 45% heavier than the average body weight are at risk of death two times greater than the average body weight. The use of anti-obesity drugs has many side effects, so it is necessary to find the anti-obesity drug with low toxicity. Many microbial secondary metabolites and chemically synthesized antiobesity drugs are available in the market with progressive side effects upon long term use of these medicines and drugs. Plants in the Costus genus are known to have various activities, starting from an antibacterial agent, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticancer, antidiabetic, and so on. From some previous studies that have been conducted, it is stated that some Costus plants have a high potential to be a prospective anticancer candidate in the future. This review will discuss botanical and chemical overview, traditional uses, and potential anticancer activity of several Costus plants, namely C.speciosus, C.igneus, C.spiralis, and C.pictus. In conclusion, anticancer activity assay was carried out by several

ABSTRACT. The aim of the current study was to analyze the polyphenols and determines the antioxidant, analgesic and diuretic properties of the methanolic extract of C.speciosus rhizome. DPPH and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays were used to determine the antioxidant activity. Acetic acid-induced writhing and formalin-induced licking experiments were used to assess the analgesic effect. The total phenolic, flavonoid and flavonol contents were found 51.73± 0.25 mg GAE/g dry weight, 3.41± 0.07mg QE/g dry weights and 44.19± 2.24 mg QE/g dry weight, respectively. The plant extract ex
