Topical microbicides are being developed as a female-controlled method for preventing HIV-1 infection. Non-antiretroviral (ARV)-based candidates may be advantageous given increasing levels of ARV resistance in low and middle- income countries. MABGEL 1 was a phase 1 trial designed to evaluate the pharmacokinetics and safety of a vaginal microbicide containing the broadly HIV-1 neutralizing monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) C2F5, C4E10 and C2G12 in a hydroxyethylcellulose-based gel vehicle. The Gorringe Bank region is located at the eastern end of the Azores-Gibraltar plate boundary, which plate kinematic studies show to progressively change from extension at the Azores, through pure right lateral strike slip at the Gloria fault to compression at Gibraltar. In this thesis, I probe the stellar and dark matter component of galaxies in order to infer their evolutionary histories. I am doing this by studying two distinct galaxy population samples: (i) a high redshift sample at z&Tilde;1, and (ii) a high density environment sample of galaxies in the nearby Coma cluster. By comparing these samples to a sample of galaxies in the local Universe in a low density environment, I infer variation in their properties as a function of time and environment. This thesis describes the synthesis and reactivity of previously unprecedented bicyclic methylene aziridines via rhodium(II) catalysed cyclisation of α-allenic N-tosyloxycarbamates. These aziridines undergo reaction with organocuprates to give cis- disubstituted oxazolidinones by nucleophillic attack at the vinylic centre; plausible mechanisms for this process are discussed. This thesis is concerned with the non-linear effects observed in the absorption spectra obtained with swept continuous wave quantum cascade laser (cw-QCL) radiation. Based on the gravity model by Baier and Bergstrand (2001), we use a static and dynamic panel data approach to estimate the relative contributions of income growth, income convergence, and the reductions in tariffs and trade costs to the growth of intra-EU trade over the period 1960 to 2000. Agricultural support levels are at a crossroad with reduced distortions in OECD countries and increasing support for agricultural producers in emerging economies over the last decades. This paper studies the determinants of distortions in the agricultural markets by putting a specific focus on the role of trade policy. Applying various different dynamic panel data estimators and explicitly accounting for potential endogeneity of trade policy agreements, we find that an increase in the number of bilateral free trade agreements exhibits significant short- and long-run distortion reducing effects

We estimate the speed of income convergence for a sample of 196 European NUTS 2 regions over the period 1985-1999. So far there is no direct estimator available for dynamic panels with strong spatial dependencies. We propose a two-step procedure, which involves first spatial filtering of the variables to remove the spatial correlation, and application of standard GMM estimators for dynamic panels in a second step.
