Abstract:
The authorship attribution has been analyzed mainly through the classification of texts, the process of the extraction of features has been carried out under two approaches: based on profile and instances, through the analysis of textual features or linguistic features that allow finding the style of author's writing. In profile and instance approaches, extracting features from the authors' set of documents results in high feature dimensionality that can impair classification performance. Therefore, an approach that does not depend on the set of documents for the extraction of features and does not depend on the selection of features is proposed, the classification of texts was carried out with different supervised learning methods. In the present investigation, it is determined if all the features of an author are contained in a single document that describe their writing style. For the experimentation, we worked with three corpus (C10, C50 and PAN12), these were selected based on the review of the literature. According to the results obtained, it was concluded that the approach shows results superior to the state of the art in unbalanced samples, consistent results when evaluated in different contexts and robust when analyzing 10 or 50 authors. From this approach it is determined that in 500 words without repeating the writing style of an author is contained, presenting a classification accuracy of 79.68%

Abstract:
1595 Background: Intellectual disability (ID) affects about 1% of the general population, involving approximately 1 million people in Germany. People with ID experience shorter life expectancies and one of the most common causes of death include malignancies (20%). In addition to life-style factors, possibly genetic mutations causing ID may contribute to oncogenesis. Whether individuals with ID have a higher-than-expected risk of cancer in Germany remains unknown. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using nationwide outpatient health insurance data in Germany from 2019. The data set included 438 028 people with ID and 65 762 146 people without ID (0-107 years, male/female). After matching for age, sex, and district code, data from 437 802 people with ID (4.23 % with cancer) and 4 378 020 without ID (5.06 % with cancer) aged 0-95 years were analyzed. Univariate odds ratios estimated the association between ID and cancer occurrence for various cancer diagnoses (ICD-10: C00-C97). The study was approved by the ethics committee of the Berlin Medical Association (Eth-11/23). Results: Across all cancer types, people with ID showed lower risks for a cancer diagnosis than those without ID (Odds Ratio [OR] 0.83; 95% Confidence Interval [95% CI] 0.82-0.84); p < .0001 for all data. Certain cancer types occurred more often, such as malignant neoplasms of the brain (C71; OR 2.80; 95% CI 2.58-3.03), other parts of the central nervous system (C72; OR 2.45; 95% CI 1.76-3.34), the testicles (C62; OR 1.80; 95% CI 1.68-1.93), the ovary (C56; OR 1.26; 95% CI 1.13-1.4), the corpus uteri (C54; OR 2.02; 95% CI 1.86-2.19), leukemia of unspecified cell type (C95; OR 1.86; 95% CI 1.67-2.06) and other leukemia of specified cell type (C94; OR 1.81; 95% CI 1.43-2.25). However, other entities such as malignant melanomas (C43; OR 0.55; 95% CI 0.51-0.59), prostate cancer (C61; OR 0.59; 95% CI 0.56-0.62), tumors in the respiratory system (C30-39; OR 0.69; 95% CI 0.64-0.74) and the breast (C50; OR 0.82; 95% CI 0.79-0.85) occurred less often. Conclusions: People with ID showed a decreased risk for being diagnosed with cancer. This may be caused by lower exposition to certain risk factors in some cancer types such as skin or lung cancers. Difficulties in accessing the health care system and lower cancer screening rates leading to fewer diagnoses may partly explain the results. Later recognition of cancer in a more advanced stage of the disease may be associated with premature deaths and lead to lower prevalence rates. Certain oncological diseases such as malignant neoplasms of the central nervous system, urogenital tumors and hematological neoplasms require a special focus in prevention and therapy. Medical services, screening programs and patient education for people with ID need to be established, adapted and expanded to meet the needs of people with ID and to reach this highly vulnerable population group for guideline-based oncological screening and treatment.

Abstract:
In Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina during 2002 a total of 67 cases of endometrial cancer (ICD 10th Revision Code C54) were registered among female population older then 15 years (1 per 10,000 population). Nine women were diagnosed with non specific malignant uteri neoplasia (C55)--without clarifying if that was cervix or corpus uteri located cancer, but assumption is that these cancers are actually endometrial cancer. Majority of cases are older then 50 years, 48 of them (71.6%), while 29 (28.4%) are from 15 to 49 years old. During 2000 about 189,000 new endometrial cancer cases were reported with 44,700 endometrial cancer deaths in the World. In this paper we presented geographical distribution of cases registered in FB&H, as well as leading risk factors, protective factors and prevention and possibilities for screening methods.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Understanding the evolution of neonatal hypoxic/ischemic is essential for novel neuroprotective approaches. We describe the neuropathology and glial/inflammatory response, from 3 hours to 100 days, after carotid occlusion and hypoxia (8% O2, 55 minutes) to the C57/BL6 P7 mouse. Massive tissue injury and atrophy in the ipsilateral (IL) hippocampus, corpus callosum, and caudate-putamen are consistently shown. Astrogliosis peaks at 14 days, but glial scar is still evident at day 100. Microgliosis peaks at 3–7 days and decreases by day 14. Both glial responses start at 3 hours in the corpus callosum and hippocampal fissure, to progressively cover the degenerating CA field. Neutrophils increase in the ventricles and hippocampal vasculature, showing also parenchymal extravasation at 7 days. Remarkably, delayed milder atrophy is also seen in the contralateral (CL) hippocampus and corpus callosum, areas showing astrogliosis and microgliosis during the first 72 hours. This detailed and long-term cellular response characterization of the ipsilateral and contralateral hemisphere after H/I may help in the design of better therapeutic strategies.

Abstract:
While research on Western multimedia platforms, such as YouTube, is prolific and interdisciplinary, Asian portals remain unknown. We explore this field by analyzing the juvenile and intercultural uses of a popular visualization system in Japan and China, known as “danmaku” or “danmu”. This technology inserts dynamic and contextualized comments on a photogram, with several typographical possibilities. Based on a corpus of 1,590 comments on “The Ministry of Time,” collected from a fandom platform with millions of users, we analyzed the topics that arouse the most interest among Chinese fans. We combine content analysis, which incorporates coding and counting techniques of the categories with the most interventions (n>16), with multimodal discourse analysis (TV series, Asian platform and user comments). Results show that the viewers are most interested in the film genre (time travel), the characters, the plot, certain sociocultural contents, and the Spanish language. Their discussions address issues of interculturality, some topics that are taboo in China and the fandom culture in Asia. Our study illustrates the potential of participation, communication, and learning in Asian social media, and constitutes an interesting and innovative contribution to the field of media and digital literacy, with various suggestions to promote intercultural competence with the use of popular culture.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Question terminology is a set of terms which appear in keywords, idioms and fixed expressions commonly observed in questions. This paper investigates ways to automatically extract question terminology from a corpus of questions and represent them for the purpose of classifying by question type. Our key interest is to see whether or not semantic features can enhance the representation of strongly lexical nature of question sentences. We compare two feature sets: one with lexical features only, and another with a mixture of lexical and semantic features. For evaluation, we measure the classification accuracy made by two machine learning algorithms, C5.0 and PEBLS, by using a procedure called domain cross-validation, which effectively measures the domain transferability of features.

PLOS ONE 19, no. 9 (2024): e0304485. http://dx.doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0304485.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective This study aims to explore the impact of Nesfatin-1 on type 2 diabetic erectile dysfunction (T2DMED) and its underlying mechanism in regulating the phenotypic switching of corpus cavernosum smooth muscle cells (CCSMCs). Methods Twenty-four 4-week-old male C57 wild-type mice were randomly assigned to the control group, model group, and Nesfatin-1 treatment group. Monitoring included body weight, blood glucose levels, and penile cavernous pressure (ICP). Histochemistry and Western blot analyses were conducted to assess the expressions of α-SMA, OPN, and factors related to the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. CCSMCs were categorized into the control group, high glucose and high oleic acid group (GO group), Nesfatin-1 treatment group (GO+N group), sildenafil positive control group (GO+S group), and PI3K inhibitor group (GO+N+E group). Changes in phenotypic markers, cell morphology, and the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway were observed in each group. Results (1) Nesfatin-1 significantly ameliorated the body size, body weight, blood glucose, glucose tolerance, and insulin resistance in T2DMED mice. (2) Following Nesfatin-1 treatment, the ICP/MSBP ratio and the peak of the ICP curve demonstrated a significant increase. (3) Nesfatin-1 significantly enhanced smooth muscle and reduced collagen fibers in the corpus cavernosum. (4) Nesfatin-1 notably increased α-SMA expression and decreased OPN expression in CCSMCs. (5) Nesfatin-1 elevated PI3K, p-AKT/AKT, and p-mTOR/mTOR levels in penile cavernous tissue. Conclusions Nesfatin-1 not only effectively improves body weight and blood glucose levels in diabetic mice but also enhances erectile function and regulates the phenotypic switching of corpus cavernosum smooth muscle. The potential mechanism involves Nesfatin-1 activating the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway to induce the conversion of CCSMCs to a contractile phenotype.

Abstract:
Corpus uteri cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. Approximately 417.367 new cases and 97.370 deaths of endometrial cancer occur annually worldwide. Moreover, in many countries such as Europe, the United States, Russia, and Canada, carcinoma of the corpus uteri (endometrial carcinoma) has now surpassed cervical carcinoma as the most common form of malignancy affecting the female genital tract. The aim of the study was to evaluate some indicators of the oncological service in CUC in Kazakhstan in the period from 2009 to 2018.The research material was data from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan – annual form No. 7 and 35 regarding CUC (ICD 10 – C54) for 2009-2018 – incidence, mortality, early diagnosis, neglect, morphological verification. A retrospective study using descriptive and analytical methods of biomedical statistics was used as the main method.Results. For 2009-2018, 10.522 new cases of CUC were registered in the republic for the first time and 2.774 women died from this disease. The average annual crude incidence rate of CUC was 11.9±0.30/0000 (95% CI=11.3-12.5) and increased in dynamics from 10.7±0.40/0000(2009) to 11.6±0.40/0000 in 2018, the difference was statistically significant (t=1.59 and p=0.112). In dynamics, mortality rates from CUC tended to statistically significant (t=3.89 and p=0.000) decrease from 3.6±0.20/0000 (2009) to 2.5±0.20/0000 in 2018, and the average annual crude mortality rate from corpus uteri cancer was 3.2±0.20/0000 (95% CI=2.9-3.5). The research of the study period reveals a trend: early diagnosis indicators (specific weight of patients with I-II stage) improved from 82.0% (2009) to 88.6% in 2018, and accordingly the specific weight of neglected patients significantly decreased with stage III (from 12.0% to 8.5%) and with stage IV (from 4.7% to 2.8%). The morphological verification indicators for CUC remained virtually unchanged, remaining fairly high 98.6% and 98.8%, respectively, in 2009 and 2018.Conclusions. An analysis of the indicators of the oncological service in CUC revealed an improvement in morphological verification and early diagnosis, a decrease in neglect and mortality rates, which is undoubtedly associated with regular anti-cancer activities in Kazakhstan.Key words: corpus uteri cancer, incidence, mortality, early diagnosis, neglect, morphological verification, Kazakhstan.

Abstract:
Elucidating personal factors that may protect against the adverse psychological outcomes of cyberbullying victimisation might help guide more effective screening and school intervention. No studies have yet examined the role of emotional intelligence (EI) and gender in adolescent victims of cyberbullying and how these dimensions might interact in explaining cybervictimisation experiences. The main aim of this study was to examine the relationship between EI and cybervictimisation, and the interactive link involving EI skills and gender as predictors of cyberbullying victimisation in a sample of 1,645 Spanish adolescents (50.6% female), aged between 12 and 18 years. Regarding the prevalence of cybervictimisation, our results indicated that over 83.95% of the sample were considered non-cyber victims, while 16.05% experienced occasional or severe cyber victimisation. Additionally, findings indicated that deficits in EI and its dimensions were positively associated with cyber victimisation in both genders, but were stronger in females. Besides, a significant emotion regulation x gender association was found in explaining cyber victimisation experiences. While no interaction was found for males, for females the deficits of emotion regulation were significantly associated with greater victimisation. Our findings provide empirical support for theoretical work connecting EI skills, gender and cyber victimisation, suggesting emotion regulation skills might be considered as valuable resources, as well as the inclusion in new gender-tailored cyberation victimisation prevention programmes.

Abstract:
Over the last years, research on web spam filtering has gained interest from both academia and industry. In this context, although there are a good number of successful antispam techniques available (i.e., content-based, link-based, and hiding), an adequate combination of different algorithms supported by an advanced web spam filtering platform would offer more promising results. To this end, we propose the WSF2 framework, a new platform particularly suitable for filtering spam content on web pages. Currently, our framework allows the easy combination of different filtering techniques including, but not limited to, regular expressions and well-known classifiers (i.e., Naïve Bayes, Support Vector Machines, and C5.0). Applying our WSF2 framework over the publicly available WEBSPAM-UK2007 corpus, we have been able to demonstrate that a simple combination of different techniques is able to improve the accuracy of single classifiers on web spam detection. As a result, we conclude that the proposed filtering platform is a powerful tool for boosting applied research in this area.

Abstract:
In this paper, we argue that discourse representations can be mapped to networks and analyzed by tools provided in network theory so that deep properties of discourse structure are revealed. Two discourse-annotated corpora, C58 and STAC, that belong to different discourse types and languages were compared and analyzed. Various key network indices were used for the discourse representations of both corpora and show the different network profiles of the two discourse types. Moreover, both network motifs and antimotifs were discovered for the discourse networks in the two corpora that shed light on strong tendencies in building or avoiding to build discourse relations between utterances for permissible three-node discourse subgraphs. These results may lead to new types of discourse structure rules that draw on the properties of the networks that lie behind discourse representation. Another important aspect is that the second version of the STAC corpus, which includes nonlinguistic discourse units and their relations, exhibits similar trends in terms of network subgraphs compared to its first version. This suggests that the nonlinguistic context has a significant impact on discourse structure.

Abstract:
Background Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are increasingly used to treat several types of tumors. Impact of this emerging therapy on patients’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is usually collected in clinical trials through standard questionnaires. However, this might not fully reflect HRQoL of patients under real-world conditions. In parallel, users’ narratives from social media represent a potential new source of research concerning HRQoL. Objective The aim of this study is to assess and compare coverage of ICI-treated patients’ HRQoL domains and subdomains in standard questionnaires from clinical trials and in real-world setting from social media posts. Methods A retrospective study was carried out by collecting social media posts in French language written by internet users mentioning their experiences with ICIs between January 2011 and August 2018. Automatic and manual extractions were implemented to create a corpus where domains and subdomains of HRQoL were classified. These annotations were compared with domains covered by 2 standard HRQoL questionnaires, the EORTC QLQ-C30 and the FACT-G. Results We identified 150 users who described their own experience with ICI (89/150, 59.3%) or that of their relative (61/150, 40.7%), with 137 users (91.3%) reporting at least one HRQoL domain in their social media posts. A total of 8 domains and 42 subdomains of HRQoL were identified: Global health (1 subdomain; 115 patients), Symptoms (13; 76), Emotional state (10; 49), Role (7; 22), Physical activity (4; 13), Professional situation (3; 9), Cognitive state (2; 2), and Social state (2; 2). The QLQ-C30 showed a wider global coverage of social media HRQoL subdomains than the FACT-G, 45% (19/42) and 29% (12/42), respectively. For both QLQ-C30 and FACT-G questionnaires, coverage rates were particularly suboptimal for Symptoms (68/123, 55.3% and 72/123, 58.5%, respectively), Emotional state (7/49, 14% and 24/49, 49%, respectively), and Role (17/22, 77% and 15/22, 68%, respectively). Conclusions Many patients with cancer are using social media to share their experiences with immunotherapy. Collecting and analyzing their spontaneous narratives are helpful to capture and understand their HRQoL in real-world setting. New measures of HRQoL are needed to provide more in-depth evaluation of Symptoms, Emotional state, and Role among patients with cancer treated with immunotherapy.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Gastropod molluscs such as nudibranchs are important members of deep-sea benthic ecosystems. However, data on the trophic ecology and feeding specialization of these animals are limited to date. The method of fatty acid trophic markers (FATM) was applied to determine the dietary preferences of nudibranchs off the Kuril Islands. Fatty acid (FA) compositions of Dendronotus sp., Tritonia tetraquetra, and Colga pacifica collected from deep waters were analyzed and compared with those of Aeolidia papillosa and Coryphella verrucosa from the offshore zone. The high level of FATM such as 22:5n-6 and C20 monounsaturated FAs indicated that Dendronotus sp. preys on sea anemones and/or anthoathecates hydroids similarly to that of shallow-water species A. papillosa and C. verrucosa. The high percentage of tetracosapolyenoic acids and the ratio 24:6n-3/24:5n-6 indicated that T. tetraquetra preys on soft corals such as Gersemia and/or Acanella at a depth of 250 m, but soft corals of the family Primnoidae may be the main item in the diet of T. tetraquetra at a depth of 500 m. The high content of Δ 7,13-22:2 and 22:6n-3 shows that C. pacifica can feed on bryozoans. In C. pacifica, 22:5n-6 may be synthesized intrinsically by the mollusks, whereas odd-chain and branched saturated FAs originate from associated bacteria.

Abstract:
Michel Eugène Chevreul entered at 17 the laboratory of Vauquelin, at the Museum. He began his investigations on animal fats in 1811. They appear as yet the most complete and the best executed experiments found in all chemistry. For the first time, he combined fractional solution, crystallization, distillation, melting point determination, and ultimate analysis. All started with the isolation of an acid and solid substance, “margaric acid”, the first of a long list of fatty acids isolated from various fats. Studying saponification, he determined that “anhydrous glycerine” was combining with water. After studying human gallstones, he discovered “cholesterine” (cholesterol). From whale spermaceti, he described “cetin” (mainly cetyl palmitate), containing no glycerol. He isolated from sheep fat a new acid he named “stearic acid”. This component was proposed in a joint patent by Chevreul and Gay-Lussac (1825) for the fabrication of very efficient candles. He discovered several volatile fatty acids in cow and goat butter (from C4 to C10). His master work (Recherches chimiques sur les corps gras d’origine animale, 1823b) contains his experimental procedures and his theoretical conclusions on the nature of fats, it may be considered as the first treatise on lipochemistry.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Endometrial cancer is the most common malignant tumor of the female genital organs. In Germany, treatment is provided in both cancer centers certified by the German Cancer Society (Deutsche Krebsgesellschaft, DKG) and in non-certified hospitals. This study investigated whether treatment in DKG-certified centers leads to improved overall survival of patients with endometrial cancer. Materials and Methods Data from 11 legally independent German statutory health insurance (SHI) funds of the AOK were analyzed as well as data from four clinical cancer registries (CCR), resulting in inclusion of 30 102 AOK patients and 8190 registry patients with a diagnosis (incidental cases) of ICD-10-GM code C54 (malignant neoplasm of corpus uteri). For comparative survival analyses, multivariable Cox regressions and Kaplan–Meier analyses were used. Results The Kaplan–Meier estimator for 5-year overall survival was 66.7% for patients from certified centers and 65.0% for patients from non-certified hospitals (using SHI data; CCR data: 63.4% vs. 60.7%). Cox regression adjusted for relevant confounders showed a hazard ratio (HR) of 0.93 (SHI data; 95% CI 0.86 – 1.00; p = 0.050) and 0.935 (CCR data; 95% CI 0.827 – 1.057; p = 0.281) for all-cause mortality. In a subgroup analysis (CCR), patients with International Union against Cancer Control (UICC) stage I had a significant survival benefit if treated in a certified center (HR 0.783; 95% CI 0.620 – 0.987; p = 0.038). Conclusion The study presented herein shows that patients with endometrial cancer treated in a certified cancer center tend to have better survival rates. This should be considered when selecting the treating hospital.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Ventricular fibrillation (VF) Amplitude Spectral Area (AMSA) is a well–established predictor of successful defibrillation and return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC). Attending to the limited evidence on the topic, gender seems to affect AMSA, and higher values have been reported in females. The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of gender in AMSA values for patients suffering out–of–hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Methods We enrolled 4619 consecutive OHCA patients from January 2015 to December 2020 in the LombardiaCare Registry. We considered only those subjects with attempted cardio–pulmonary resuscitation (697 patients) and at least one shock delivered. A total of 250 patients were considered (40 F/ 210 M) with 830 shocks (100 F/ 730 M). AMSA values were computed for the ventricular fibrillation in the 2–s pre–shock interval of the ECG recorded by the Corpuls3 defibrillator (Corpuls, Kaufering, Germany). Results Female patients were older than male [median(IQR) 70.5 (62–72) vs 67 (55–75) years, p=0.01], with cardiac arrest more frequently at home (84% vs 76%, p=0.003), fewer shocks [2 (1–4) vs 4 (2–7), p=0.004] and higher percentage of success (53% vs 40%, p= 0.009). On the contrary, cardiac arrest duration [ 58.7 (31–69) vs 57.6 (41.4–77.3) min, p=0.366] and the rate of ROSC (32% vs 33%, p=0.88) were similar in both groups. Higher AMSA values were found in female patients [10.3 Hz–mV (6.6–13.5) vs 7.9 Hz–mV (5.2–12.1), p= 0.0007]. At a multivariable analysis, after correction for witnessed status, bystanders CPR, amiodarone administration, age and call–to shock time, male sex was found to be independently associated with the probability of having low values of AMSA, below the median value of 8.3 Hz–mV [OR 2.15 (95%CI1.35–3.43), p=0.001]. Despite gender stratification ROC curve analysis confirmed AMSA as a predictor of shock success [AUC–F: 0.75 (95%CI 0.65–0.83), p<0.001; AUC–M: 0.78 (95%CI 0.74–0.81)] and ROSC [AUC–F: 0.69 (95%CI 0.59–0.68), p=0.008; AUCM: 0.84 (95%CI 0.81–0.87)]. Conclusion Female sex is related to higher AMSA values. As AMSA reflects the energetical status and the ATP levels in the myocardial cells during cardiac arrest, this difference may be due to lower incidence and lower severity of cardiac ischemic disease in women. AMSA remains a valid predictor of both shock success and ROSC for female and male patients. Further investigations are needed to support and comprehend these conclusions.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background. Disability-adjusted life year (DALY) is one of the well-known methods of comprehensive health assessment in the world. The method was developed by the World Bank and the World Health Organization. The DALY units and gross domestic product per capita are used for the assessment of the indirect economic damage from premature death of cancer.
Aim. To estimate the number of years of life lost (DALY method) and economic losses due to death from cervical, uterine and ovarian cancers in the population of the Tomsk region.
Materials and methods. The data of the Tomsk Region Federal State Statistics Service on the mortality of the population of the reporting form C51 Distribution of the dead by sex, age groups and causes of death, data on the sex and age distribution of the population, life expectancy, gross regional product per capita for 2018 of the Tomsk region were used.
Results. In 2018, due to the death from gynecological cancer of the population of the Tomsk Region, 1616 DALY units were lost in absolute numbers. Of these, cervical cancer accounts for 44.3% (717 DALY units), uterine corpus cancer accounts for 24.8% (401 DALY units), ovarian cancer accounts for 30.8% (498 DALY units). At working age (1654 years), the absolute losses amounted to 694 DALYs. The economic damage to the Tomsk Region due to the mortality of the population from cancer of the cervix, uterine body and ovaries in 2018 amounted to 918.2 million rubles. Economic losses as a result of mortality from cancer of the cervix amounted to 407.4 million rubles, from cancer of the ovaries 283.0 million rubles, from cancer of the body of the uterus 227.8 million rubles. The economic damage from gynecological cancers in working age amounted to 394.3 million (42.9% of the total economic damage).
Conclusion. Determining the socio-economic losses associated with mortality from malignant neoplasms of the female genital organs is necessary for the effective use of health care resources, which can be used to justify the need of the population for oncological care.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction An association between thrombocytosis and cancer is well established and several studies have shown that an elevated platelet count at diagnosis implies an inferior prognosis. In ovarian cancer, the pivotal role of platelets in driving the biologic mechanisms of malignant tumors has been demonstrated and paraneoplastic thrombocytosis has been shown to directly fuel tumor growth (Stone et al, N Engl J Med. 2012). In this epidemiological study, we assess the role of prediagnostic platelet levels in primary care patients subsequently diagnosed with gynecological cancer. Methods Using a primary care resource comprising blood differential cell counts from more than 500,000 individuals (Andersen et al, Clin Epidemiol. 2014), we included adults (18-80 years) diagnosed with gynecological cancer (ICD-10 codes C51-C58) as reported in the Danish Cancer Registry (DCR) between July 1, 2003 to January 23, 2010. We analyzed platelet counts in a 3-year period before cancer diagnosis and defined no prediagnostic thrombocytosis as a mean platelet count between 150-400x109/l, mild prediagnostic thrombocytosis as >400-550x109/l and severe prediagnosticthrombocytosis as >550x109/l. Statistical Analysis We used multivariable logistic regression to compute odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between prediagnostic thrombocytosis groups and cancer stage category (localized vs. non-localized) at the time of diagnosis (Table 1). The ORs were adjusted for known and possible confounders such as age (quadratic), year and month of blood sampling, as well as competing comorbid conditions as reported in the Danish National Patient Register. Furthermore, we analyzed time from diagnosis to all-cause mortality (as reported in the Danish Civil Registration System) in Cox regression models. The effects of prediagnostic thrombocytosis were estimated with hazard ratios (HRs) and adjusted for cancer stage category in addition to the above-mentioned confounders. Results A total of 1,083 women were diagnosed in the defined period comprising external female genital organs and vagina (5.1%), cervix uteri (24.8%), corpus uteri (37.2%), ovary, fallopian tube and broad ligament (32.5%) and other and unspecified female genital organs (0.4%). 614 of these patients (57%) had at least one available prediagnostic platelet measurement (mean number of measurements=1.62, SD=1.19, range=1-17) and 109 exhibited prediagnostic thrombocytosis (mild=76%, severe=24%). We observed significant associations between prediagnostic thrombocytosis and the risk of being diagnosed with advanced disease with ORs of 2.19 (1.25-3.84), P=0.006 and 3.80 (1.37-10.57), P=0.0104 for mild and severe prediagnostic thrombocytosis, respectively. The median overall survival among patients with severe prediagnostic thrombocytosis was 0.92 years, as compared with 3.34 years among those with mild prediagnostic thrombocytosis, P<0.0001 (Figure 1). When analyzing mortality rates and adjusting for cancer stage category at diagnosis, HRs were 1.52 (1.09-2.13), P=0.0145 and 3.46 (2.17-5.51), P<0.0001 for mild and severe prediagnostic thrombocytosis, respectively. Lastly, we analyzed all-cause mortality rates for localized cancer cases only and observed a significant association with severe (but not mild) prediagnostic thrombocytosis with a HR of 4.21 (1.22-14.55), P=0.032. Discussion This study demonstrates that prediagnostic thrombocytosis in gynecological cancer patients infers higher risks of advanced disease at time of diagnosis and inferior prognosis, not only due to the dissemination per se. In localized cancer, severe prediagnostic thrombocytosis also increases mortality with potential implications for the diagnostic work-up in these patients at initial referral to hospital. Abstract:
This study explores a series of author attribution approaches that use some techniques for improving performances. Author attribution is the identification of the author of a text. It has attracted many attentions because of its relevance in a wide range of applications, including forensic investigations and plagiarism detection. A large number of features and approaches have been applied to this task. However, there has been a lack of studies that involve multiple datasets or that use a different range of classifications. Therefore, in this work, we explore several machine learning tools, the fusion between classifiers and different types of features that have been applied on the C50 database.

Abstract:
Background: Clinical and epidemiologic studies suggest a relationship between long-term nano-particulate matter (nPM) exposure and white matter injury 1 . Accumulating laboratory evidence suggests that nPM exposure causes inflammation in multiple brain regions 2 . Objective: We sought to study the effects nano-particulate matter exposure on microglia activation and complement upregulation within the corpus callosum in a murine model. Methods: C57 black 6J mice were randomized to re-aerosolized nPM (n=18, nPM <200 nm) or filtered air (n=18) cohorts. Exposures were conducted for a total of 150 cumulative hours. Post-exposure, brains were harvested and immunohistochemical analysis performed. Reactive microglia (IBA-1), reactive astrocytes (GFAP) and C5α deposition (C5α antibody) were quantified in the medial corpus callosum. Results: There were significant differences in IBA-1 cell count staining between the groups (filtered air- 94.7± 18.87; nPM- 158.5 ± 41.69, p<0.05). No differences in GFAP cell count staining existed between the filtered air (677.5 ± 96.09) and nPM mice (656.6 ± 120.3, p=ns). There were significant differences in C5α density staining between filtered air (8.181 ± 3.863) and nPM mice (14.77 ± 5.989, p<0.01). Conclusion: Chronic particulate matter exposure is associated with white matter changes in a murine model. Regional increases in microglia number and C5α deposition suggest an inflammatory mechanism. Abstract:
AbstractAs marine species adapt to climate change, their heat tolerance will likely be under strong selection. Yet trade-offs between heat tolerance and other life history traits could compromise natural adaptation or assisted evolution. This is particularly important for ecosystem engineers, such as reef-building corals, which support biodiversity yet are vulnerable to heatwave-induced mass bleaching and mortality. Here, we exposed 70 colonies of the reef-building coral Acropora digitifera to a long-term marine heatwave emulation experiment. We tested for trade-offs between heat tolerance and three traits measured from the colonies in situ – colony growth, fecundity, and symbiont community composition. Despite observing remarkable within-population variability in heat tolerance, all colonies were dominated by Cladocopium C40 symbionts. We found no evidence for trade-offs between heat tolerance and fecundity or growth. Contrary to expectations, positive associations emerged with growth, such that faster-growing colonies tended to bleach and die at higher levels of heat stress. Collectively, our results suggest that these corals exist on an energetic continuum where some high-performing individuals excel across multiple traits. Within populations, trade-offs between heat tolerance and growth or fecundity may not be major barriers to natural adaptation or the success of assisted evolution interventions.

Abstract:
Introduction: We previously reported impaired manipulative manual dexterity measured by grooved peg-board test (GPBT) in healthypeople with increased total brain ischemic white matter hyperintensities. We hypothesized that preclinical white matter tract damage (WMTD), measured as lower regional fractional anisotropy (rFA), is associated with functional decrements measured with GPBT, and with a biomarker of white matter disease, serum ceramides. Methods: Participants were recruited from the GeneSTAR study in families with a history of coronary artery disease. Diffusion tensor imaging was acquired on a Phillips 3T MRI and rFA was calculated using the 181 Eve segmented atlas. 48 susceptible regions for WMTD were analyzed.Liquid chromatography was used to measure ceramides (C). Spearman’s rank correlation (SRC) was used to test statistical associations and Bonferroni method was used to correct for multiple comparisons. Multivariate analysis (GEE) adjusting for age, sex, race and education was performed for associations that were significant in the univariate analyses. Result: Subjects (n=112) were 49±11 years; 49% male and 39% African American. rFA was correlated with decrements on GPBT in the left (L) anterior corona radiata, L genu of the corpus callosum (LGCC), L external capsule, and L & right fornix (RF) (P=0.0009, 0.0008, 0.0002, 0.0003 and 8.2E-07, respectively). Additionally, rFA was negatively correlated with C18:0 in the RF and LGCC (P=1.27E-05 and 2.58E-05, respectively) and C20:0 in RF (P=6.09E-06). C18:0 was correlated with decrements on GPBT (P=0.0025). GEE showed associations between decremental GPBT and rFA in the RF (B = -0.52, 95% CI -1 - 0.03, p= 0.037), between rFA in the RF and Ceramide (C18:0, B= -0.03, 95% CI -0.046--0.0073, p=0.007, C20:0, B=-0.0002, 95%CI -0.0003-0, P= 0.018), as well as rFA in LGCC and Ceramide (C18:0, B=-0.0097, 95% CI -0.019--0.006, P=0.037). GBPT and ceramides were not associated when adjusted for rFA (B = 0.0002 95% CI -0.052 - 0.052 P= 0.99). Conclusion: These analyses support our hypothesis that preclinical WMTD represented by reduced rFA, may undermine neural networks affecting manipulative manual dexterity, with concomitant elevation in serum ceramides in healthy high risk people.

Abstract:
AbstractThe cold-water gorgonian coral Paragorgia arborea is considered as a foundation species of deep-sea ecosystems in the northern Atlantic and Pacific oceans. To advance lipidomic studies of deep-sea corals, molecular species compositions of diacylglycerol ethers (DAGE), which are specific storage lipids of corals, and structural glycerophospholipids (GPL) including ethanolamine, choline, inositol and serine GPL (PE, PC, PI, and PS, respectively) were analyzed in P. arborea by HPLC and tandem mass spectrometry. In DAGE molecules, alkyl groups (16:0, 14:0, and 18:1), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and monounsaturated FA are mainly substituted the glycerol moiety at position sn-1, sn-2, and sn-3, respectively. The ether form (1-O-alkyl-2-acyl) predominates in PE and PC, while PI is comprised of the 1,2-diacyl form. Both ether and diacyl forms were observed in PS. At position sn-2, C20 PUFA are mainly attached to PC, but C24 PUFA, soft coral chemotaxonomic markers, concentrate in PS, PI, and PE. A comparison of non-polar parts of molecules has shown that DAGE, ether PE, and ether PC can originate from one set of 1-O-alkyl-2-acyl-sn-glycerols. Ether PE may be converted to ether PS by the base-exchange reaction. A diacylglycerol unit generated from phosphatidic acid can be a precursor for diacyl PS, PC, and PI. Thus, a lipidomic approach has confirmed the difference in biosynthetic origins between ether and diacyl lipids of deep-sea gorgonians.

Abstract:
In the soft coral Sinularia leptoclados, 30 molecular species belonged to 4 glycerophospholipid classes, including 8 ethanolamine glycerophospholipid (PE), 13 choline glycerophospholipid (PC), 3 serine glycerophospholipid (PS) and 6 inositol glycerophospholipid (PI) molecular species were identified. PE 18:1e/20:4, PC 18:0e/20:4, PS 18:0e/24:5 and PI 18:0/24:5 are the most abundant species with value of 69.94%, 45.57%, 68.55% and 68.18%, respectively. The PE, PC, and PS classes are reported to contain alkylacylphospholipid; meanwhile, a considerable level of diacylphospholipid is found in PI. A large portion of C20:4n polyunsaturated fatty acid was found in PE and PC; meanwhile, C16, C18, C22, and C24 fatty acids were reported at a minor level. The most dominant polyunsaturated fatty acid in PI and PS is tetracosapolyenoic C24. In the presence of fatty acids specific for the biosynthesis of zooxanthellae18:4n and 22:6n, PC is the most influenced class by the lipid composition of symbiotic microalgae. The PC 16:0e/18:4 and PC 18:1e/22:6 molecular species with recorded content of 1.69% and 8.05% are the evidence for lipid transportation from zooxanthellae to host corals. The PE, PS, and PI classes exhibit the lipid composition of the host coral; also, they are less affected by zooxanthellae lipids.

Abstract:
AbstractLipids may serve as energy reserves to support coral calcification, allow acclimation to higher temperatures, and are implicated in the control of CaCO3 precipitation. Here, we report the lipid composition of the soft tissues (including host and symbionts) of 7 massive Porites spp. coral colonies (4 × P. lutea and 3 × P. murrayensis), which were cultured under different pCO2 concentrations (180, 260, 400 and 750 µatm) and at two temperatures (25 ℃ and 28 ℃), below the thermal stress threshold. We report the fatty acid methyl esters (FAME), free fatty acid (FFA) to total fatty acid content, sterol and wax ester profiles, and identify two ketones (n-alkanone) and three long chain aldehyde (n-alkanal) derivatives. Increasing seawater temperature significantly increases the contributions of FFAs to the total lipids, of C18:2 and C20:0 to the total FFA pool, of C14:0 to total FAME, and of campesterol to total sterol. The temperature increase also reduces the contributions of unusual fatty acid derivatives to total lipids, of C14:0, C15:0, C16:0 and C17:0 saturated free fatty acids to total FFAs, and of C16:0 FA to total FAME. Fatty acids are implicated in the control of membrane structure fluidity and the observed changes may promote acclimation and thermostability as temperature varies. Seawater pCO2 has no significant effect on the composition of tissue lipids with the exception that the contribution of C14:0 FA to total lipid content is significantly lower at 180 µatm compared to 260 and 750 µatm. Decreased contribution of total sterols and unusual fatty acid derivatives and increased contribution of total FFAs to total lipids are observed in the fastest calcifying coral (a P. lutea specimen) compared to the other corals, under all pCO2 and temperature conditions. Although a rapid calcifier this genotype has been shown previously to exhibit pronounced abnormal changes in skeletal morphology in response to decreased seawater pCO2. Variations in tissue lipid composition between coral genotypes may influence their resilience to future climate change.

Abstract:
<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> We have demonstrated that asymptomatic cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) measured by white matter hyperintensity volume is associated with reduced manipulative manual dexterity on the Grooved Peg Board Test (GPBT) in middle-aged healthy individuals with a family history of early coronary artery disease. In this current study, we aim to identify the association of subcortical white matter microstructural impairment measured by diffusion tensor imaging, manual dexterity measured by GPBT and circulating serums ceramide, another marker for white matter injury. We hypothesize that lower regional fractional anisotropy (rFA) is associated with worse performance on GPBT and elevated serum ceramides in the same study population. <b><i>Methods:</i></b> rFA of 48 regions representing the subcortical white matters were analyzed in GeneSTAR participants in addition to serum ceramides and GPBT scores. Unadjusted univariable analyses with Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons were completed using Spearman correlation for testing the associations between ceramides, rFA of subcortical white matter, and GPBT performance. Subsequently, sensitivity analyses were performed after excluding the participants that had any physical limitation that may influence their performance on GPBT. Finally, in the adjusted analysis using generalized estimating equation, linear regression models were performed for the areas that met significance threshold in the unadjusted analyses. <b><i>Results:</i></b> 112 subjects (age [49 ± 11], 51% female, 39.3% African American) were included. Adjusted analyses for the significant correlations that met the Bonferroni correction threshold in the unadjusted univariable analyses identified significant negative associations between rFA of the right fornix (RF) and log-GPBT score (β = −0.497, <i>p</i> = 0.037). In addition, rFA of RF negatively correlated with log serum ceramide levels (C18: β = −0.03, <i>p</i> = 0.003, C20: β = −0.0002, <i>p</i> = 0.004) and rFA of left genu of corpus callosum negatively correlated with log C18 level (β = −0.0103, <i>p</i> = 0.027). <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> These results demonstrate that subcortical microstructural white matter disruption is associated with elevated serum ceramides and reduced manual dexterity in a population with cSVD. These findings suggest that injury to white matter tracts undermines neural networks, with functional consequences in a middle-aged population with cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Fungiidae have shown increased thermal adaptability in coral reef ecosystems under global warming. This study analyzes the evolutionary divergence and microbial communities of Fungiidae in the Sanjiao Reef of the southern South China Sea and explores the impact of coral evolution radiation and microbial dynamics on the heat tolerance of Fungiidae. The results found that Cycloseris was an ancient branch of Fungiidae, dating back approximately 147.8953 Mya, and Fungiidae differentiated into two ancestral clades (clades I and II) before 107.0312 Ma. Fungiidae exhibited specific symbioses with the Cladocopium C27 sub-clade. Notably, the Cladocopium C1 sub-clade has a high relative abundance in clade I, whereas the heat-tolerant Cladocopium C40 and C3u sub-clades subdominante in clade II. Regarding bacterial communities, Cycloseris costulata , the earliest divergent species, had higher bacterial β-diversity, while the latest divergent species, Lithophyllon scabra , displayed lower bacterial α-diversity and higher community stability. Beneficial bacteria dominante Fungiidae’s bacterial community (54%). The co-occurrence network revealed that microbial networks in clade II exhibited lower complexity and greater resilience than those in clade I. Our study highlights that host evolutionary radiation and microbial communities shaped Fungiidae’s thermal tolerance. The variability in subdominant Symbiodiniaceae populations may contribute to interspecific differences in thermal tolerance along the evolutionary branches of Fungiidae. The presence of abundant beneficial bacteria may further enhance the thermal ability of the Fungiidae. Furthermore, the later divergent species of Fungiidae have stronger heat tolerance, possibly driven by the increased regulation ability of the host on the bacterial community, greater microbial community stability, and interaction network resistance. IMPORTANCE Coral reefs are facing significant threats due to global warming. The heat tolerance of coral holobionts depends on both the coral host and its microbiome. However, the association between coral evolutionary radiation and interspecific differences in microbial communities remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of evolutionary radiation and microbial community dynamics in shaping the thermal acclimation potential of Fungiidae in the Sanjiao Reef of the southern South China Sea. The study’s results suggest that evolutionary radiation enhances the thermal tolerance of Fungiidae. Fungiidae species that have diverged more recently have exhibited a higher presence of heat-tolerant Symbiodiniaceae taxa, more stable bacterial communities, and a robust and resilient microbial interaction network, improving the thermal adaptability of Fungiidae. In summary, this study provides new insights into the thermal adaptation patterns of corals under global warming conditions.
