AbstractThe removal of phosphorus from wastewaters is becoming very common, to meet water quality targets, and avoid environmental problems related to eutrophication. At the same time, agricultural application of P-rich sewage biosolids is diminishing for reasons of logistics and of public pressure. As a result P from wastewaters is ultimately disposed of in landfills. Over the long term, phosphate ore reserves will become depleted. Recycling of P from wastewaters may thus be a realistic prospect if scientific and technical issues can be resolved. At the centre of the scientific problems lie c

The nitrogen incorporation into phosphate glass matrix was found to notably influence in vitro dissolution only of homogenous glasses. Increasing the nitrogen content in the samples decreased the mean mass loss, while the niobate incorporation increased it. Abstract There are two principal ways in which the relationship between Ca+ concentration ([Ca +]) and myofibrillar force development can be measured. The first is to introduce Ca+ -sensitive photoproteins or dyes into the cell and to measure force and cytosolic [Ca +] while both change, for example during the twitch. The second method is to permeabilize (‘skin’) the cell surface membrane so that externally applied ions (Ca2+, MgATP-, and so on) readily diffuse into the cells and so control the myofibrillar environment.

The microbial metabolic activities which cause MIC affect materials in a wide variety of industries. Although MIC has not traditionally been a major durability concern for Florida coastal and inland bridges, a recent finding by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) of severe corrosion of steel bridge piles with strong evidence of microbial activity, has motivated the present study. As a preliminary research, identify the possible susceptibility of a ca

Abstract Phosphonate inhibitors are used for scale and corrosion control in gas and oil production. The fate of scale inhibitor in the oil bearing formation following an inhibitor squeeze has been carefully studied in both laboratory apparatus and actual field squeezes. The effects of acidity, sandstone composition, and brine composition on retention and release of phosphonate from Berea sandstone were evaluated using adsorption/precipitation models. The adsorption of phosphonate on sandstones typically occurred in clay minerals in the range of less than 0.2 mg/g sorption density. More phospho

Abstract Phosphonate scale inhibitors (SIs) applied in downhole squeeze applications may be retained in the near-well formation through adsorption and/or precipitation mechanisms. In this paper, we focus on the properties of precipitated “mixed” calcium and magnesium phosphonate complexes formed by nine common phosphonate species. By “mixed”, we mean anionic SI bound to both calcium and magnesium divalent cations, i.e. the complex SI_Can1_Mgn2 is formed where n1 and n2 are the stoichiometric coefficients for Ca and Mg, respectively. Abstract Calcium phosphate (Ca-P) coatings have been used as surface coatings on porous metallic implants in dentistry and orthopaedics for the last twenty years. These Ca-P coatings, nominally hydroxyapatite (HA), have been shown to promote bone fixation and osteconductivity on Ti and Ti alloy substrates used for those purposes. Such coatings can be formed by different methods including plasma spray. In addition to the well known advantages of the plasma spray technique to deposit coatings, a new version of this technique, i.e. solution precursor plasma spray (SPPS), has been reported to prod
