"This thesis presents an in depth study of Pro/Engineer's manufacturing module and its application into the Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) undergraduate education environment. Mechanical Engineering has a lot to gain by incorporating computers into the undergraduate curriculum in comparison to only the traditional classroom surroundings. Today, complex problems can be solved in mere seconds thanks to the power and speed of current computers. Likewise within today's manufacturing sector, numerical controlled (NC) machines are no longer programmed manually. In today's globally competitive manufacturing environment, integrated systems such as CAD/CAM help reduce the ever-shrinking time to market. This thesis contains the background as well as the curriculum material necessary to teach undergraduate students CAM using Pro/Engineer's manufacturing module. The curriculum material starts with the tutorials to teach and reinforce Pro/Engineer basic sketcher skills, which are necessary background information. Followed with in-depth click tutorials to teach the manufacturing module for 2 axes turning, and 3 axes hole drilling and milling. It also includes the necessary lab manuals that reinforce the class lecture material, an electronic manufacturing exam, and the students' evaluations from 2 terms when the CAM course (ME3820) was offered."

No contexto atual do setor industrial onde a competitividade é cada vez maior, reduzir as incertezas presentes durante o desenvolvimento de novos produtos se torna essencial. Para isso podem ser utilizados os modelos de referência do PDP (Processo de Desenvolvimento do Produto), os quais visam uma melhoria de projeto, facilitando seu desenvolvimento e reduzindo as incertezas. Alguns segmentos industriais exigem grandes investimentos iniciais para a produção do produto, podendo-se destacar o de injeção polimérica. Neste processo há uma aquisição inicial do molde de injeção, o qual é responsável por grande parcela dos custos finais do produto, sendo este indispensável à realização da etapa. Visto isso, a utilização de ferramentas que propiciem uma redução de incertezas torna-se de grande valia. Uma destas ferramentas é o software CAM, que rotineiramente é utilizado nas fases do projeto detalhado e preparação da produção. Utilizá-lo de maneira não tradicional, em auxílio a estimativa de custos, já nas fases iniciais do PDP pode trazer algumas vantagens ao desenvolvimento do projeto. Com isso busca-se identificar a contribuição do software CAM como ferramenta de auxílio na estimativa de custos para tomada de decisão na fase inicial do processo de desenvolvimento de produtos poliméricos injetados. Para a realização do trabalho, buscou-se avaliar as fases iniciais dos modelos de referência do PDP a fim de identificar as atividades dadas como essenciais ao processo. Com a identificação das fases, foram correlacionadas quais funcionalidades do software CAM auxiliam na realização das atividades na fase inicial do PDP. Com isso propôs-se uma metodologia para estimar os custos de fabricação do molde de injeção para a fase inicial do PDP. Realizou-se então um estudo de caso, variando-se o design do produto, no qual buscou-se identificar a contribuição do software CAM na estimativa dos custos de fabricação. Após a realização do estudo de caso, percebe-se que a ferramenta CAM pode auxiliar na fase inicial do projeto, pois a mesma favorece a seleção do design do produto a ser fabricado, visto que pode-se através do software CAM estimar os tempos e as ferramentas de usinagem necessárias à fabricação do molde de injeção. Nota-se ainda que esta ferramenta favorece a definição do portfólio de produtos através da estimativa dos custos para fabricação do molde.
In the current context of the industrial sector where competitiveness is increasing, reducing the uncertainties present during the development of new products becomes essential. For this reference model of the PDP, which aim to improve the design, facilitating their development and reducing uncertainty can be used. Some industries require large initial investment for the production of the product and may highlight the polymer injection. In this process, there is an initial purchase of injection mold, which is responsible for a large portion of the final cost of the product, which is essential to carry out the step. Seen that the use of tools that may reduce the uncertainties become very valuable. One of these tools is the CAM software, which is routinely used in the stages of detailed design and production preparation. Use it for non-traditional way, aid in the cost estimate, since in the early stages of the PDP can bring some advantages to the project development. Thus, we seek to identify the contribution of CAM software tool to aid in estimating costs for decision-making early in the development process injected polymer products. To conduct the study sought to evaluate the early stages of the reference models of the PDP in order to identify activities as essential given the process. With the identification of the phases of CAM, software features, which assist in performing the activities in the initial phase of the PDP, were correlated. With this proposed a methodology for estimating the costs of manufacturing injection mold for the initial phase of the PDP. Then performed a case study, varying the design of the product, in which we attempted to identify the contribution of CAM software in estimates of manufacturing costs. After the completion of the case study, it can be seen that the CAM tool can assist in the initial design stage, because it favors the selection of the design of the product being manufactured, as it can be through the CAM software to estimate the times and machining tools needed to manufacture the injection mold. Note also that this tool favors the definition of the product portfolio by estimating costs for mold manufacturing.

Abstract:

To be more competitive in the market, many companies are trying to speed up the quotation process and quote more attractive prices. Therefore, they have identified a need for support in the quotation process in order to reduce the quotation lead-time and ensure a higher level of accuracy in the cost estimations. The Quotation Calculator, an application program, has been developed as part of the degree thesis which was carried out at AB Norrahammars Mekaniska Verkstad, NMW 2006/07. This Quotation Calculator can be operated to calculate the material and manufacturing costs of a new product.

NMW has recently acquired licenses for CATIA V5, Dassault Systems, for the purpose of making process planning and NC-programming more efficient. NMW wants to generate the data needed from the machining module for the cost calculations. Hence this project was initiated in order to extract data from CATIA V5 for further use in Quotation Calculator or other computer system in NMW.

This work has resulted in a system developed with a common hosted programming language to extract and transfer information. The system retrieves model geometry from CAD and information on process planning from CAM, then matches the information in the application for the purpose of cost estimation. The system once developed, is supposed to be used for every new product. For this approach, the relationship of the data from CATIA V5 and the Quotation Calculator has been analyzed.

Within this thesis, the focus is on production cost estimation. The method used here is programming in Visual Basic Editor to extract information from the machining module in CATIA V5 and then import them to Microsoft Excel. With standard operations, tables of data and several inputs, the cost calculation and hence the quotation process can be automatically implemented. This work has been generated with the Quotation Calculator. With the correct input data to process planning and this new quotation system, the machining time and the costs can be estimated more accurately and easier. The time and cost information is made available for decision making. As a result, the lead time for the quotation process will be shortened and a relatively more attractive price can be quoted to the customers.

Background: Ceramics have long been amongst the most biocompatible materials known but their mechanical properties have limited their use. During the past few decades zirconia has aroused particular interest as a biomaterial because of its greater flexural strength, fracture resistance and toughness compared to other bioceramics. Technological inventions and developments have made the processing of zirconia-based ceramics possible and thus also the successful processing of dental restorations constructed from this type of material. The properties of zirconia-based ceramics can, however, be affected by, for example, shape, composition, manufacturing processes and subsequent handling. It was, therefore, of particular interest to study in what way recently introduced zirconia-based ceramics intended for odontological applications could be affected by the shape, manufacturing process, composition, grinding and veneering. Methods: By means of newly invented and developed CAM-Software systems with improvements in grinding technology and strategy and hardware technology, cores for single crowns, fixed partial denture (FPD) frameworks and implant-supported abutments and copies were manufactured from a hot isostatic-pressed (HIPed) yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (Y-TZP) ceramic. In addition, zirconia-based ceramics intended for odontological applications but made from other compositions and/or using different manufacturing techniques were studied. The effects were determined of shape, composition, manufacturing process, heat treatment and veneering of the cores/frameworks on the fracture or bending resistance of various types of ceramic single crowns, FPD frameworks and implant-supported abutments and copies. Results: Different thicknesses in different parts of HIPed Y-TZP cores improved the fracture resistance compared with cores of a uniform thickness resulting in a thicker veneer layer. Machining, heat treatment and veneering affected the fracture resistance of the zirconia-based ceramics studied. In addition, the quality of sintering and composition and type of veneering porcelain used influenced the fracture resistance of zirconia-based ceramics. Conclusion: The results obtained indicate that zirconia-based ceramics have the potential for use as a material in odontological applications. The mechanical properties of zirconia ceramics are, however, affected by, among other things, the shape, composition, manufacturing processes and subsequent handling of the material. These findings have to be taken in consideration in the production processes of zirconia-based ceramic restorations. To further improve their function more studies are needed to elucidate the effects of various manufacturing and handling techniques on the properties of zirconia-based ceramics.

Abstract:
The thesis will discuss the Systems Engineering phase of an original Conceptual Design Engineering Methodology for Aerospace Engineering-Vehicle Synthesis. This iterative phase is shown to benefit from digitization of Integrated Product&Process Design (IPPD) activities, through the application of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) technologies. Requirements analysis through the use of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) and 7 MaP tools is explored as an illustration. A "Requirements Data Manager" (RDM) is used to show the ability to reduce the time and cost to design for both new and legacy/derivative designs. Here the COTS tool Teamcenter Systems Engineering (TCSE) is used as the RDM. The utility of the new methodology is explored through consideration of a legacy RFP based vehicle design proposal and associated aerospace engineering. The 2001 American Helicopter Society (AHS) 18th Student Design Competition RFP is considered as a starting point for the Systems Engineering phase. A Conceptual Design Engineering activity was conducted in 2000/2001 by Graduate students (including the author) in Rotorcraft Engineering at the Daniel Guggenheim School of Aerospace Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta GA. This resulted in the "Kingfisher" vehicle design, an advanced search and rescue rotorcraft capable of performing the "Perfect Storm" mission, from the movie of the same name. The associated requirements, architectures, and work breakdown structure data sets for the Kingfisher are used to relate the capabilities of the proposed Integrated Digital Environment (IDE). The IDE is discussed as a repository for legacy knowledge capture, management, and design template creation. A primary thesis theme is to promote the automation of the up-front conceptual definition of complex systems, specifically aerospace vehicles, while anticipating downstream preliminary and full spectrum lifecycle design activities. The thesis forms a basis for additional discussions of PLM tool integration across the engineering, manufacturing, MRO and EOL lifecycle phases to support business management processes.

Resumo: A Manufatura Digital integra o projeto do produto ao planejamento dos processos de manufatura e de suporte ao produto. Produtos, processos e recursos são modelados a partir de dados reais, em uma fábrica virtual. O funcionamento desta fábrica virtual é testado até sua validação e os resultados são aplicados na fábrica real. É uma importante alternativa com potencial para transformar os negócios, tornando-os mais competitivos, graças aos diversos benefícios conseguidos com a Manufatura Digital, tais como redução dos ciclos de desenvolvimento do produto e dos custos de manufatura, aceleração de resposta ao mercado, aumento da qualidade do produto, melhoras na disseminação do conhecimento do produto. Abstract: The Digital Manufacturing integrates product design to manufacturing process planning and product support. Products, processes and resources are modeled from real data in a virtual factory. The operation of the virtual factory is tested to its validation and the results are applied to actual plant. It is an important alternative with the potential to transform businesses, making them more competitive, thanks to the many benefits achieved through Digital Manufacturing, such as reducing product development cycles and manufacturing cost, rapid response to market, increased product quality improvements in the dissemination of product knowledge. The aim of this study is to describe the application of Digital Manufacturing in the Context of Reverse Engineering through a case study an International Collaborative Project which resulted in the Virtual Prototype of an airplane Blériot XI and manufacture of a replica of this plane, with the aim of validating the deployment of Digital Manufacturing in an educational environment

This report discusses in great detail the various research, design, and development stages of the Produce Sorting Microcomputer developed for HAGAN ENGINEERING Inc. The two-semester Clinical Research project has been approved by the graduate committee at the School of Engineering at the University of the Pacific and fulfills the requirements towards a Master Degree in Electrical Engineering. The project was selected based on its complexity, feasibility, the time span it required to complete, and its relevance to the area of real time microcomputer design. In addition, the design constraints and specifications were to be dictated solely by HAGAN ENGINEERING Inc. and all further modifications were to be discussed and approved by HAGAN. These limitations created a professional industry-like atmosphere, which is one of the goals of the Clinical Research Program. A brief User's Manual will accompany the MC68000 board; it will contain all the vital information about the system that a programmer or a technician might need to understand the system. The manual wall contain the complete circuit schematic, a parts list, general design features, and all the software properties of the system (memory map, interrupt tables register map).

Von Beginn der flexiblen Automatisierung mit numerisch gesteuerten Werkzeugmaschinen und der zugehörigen Programmier-Software bis zum gegenwärtigen Entwicklungsstand (Industrie 4.0) wird die historische Entwicklung von 1960 bis 2020 aus der Position eines aktiven Mitgestalters dargestellt. Interessanterweise vollzogen sich die wesentlichen Entwicklungsetappen für die ersten dreißig Jahre parallel in beiden deutschen Staaten. Aus den Lehren des Zweiten Weltkrieges wurden im Rahmen der UNESCO zum friedlichen Informationsaustausch geeignete wissenschaftliche Organisationen gegründet: • IFIP (Internationale Föderation für Informationsprozesse, speziell Arbeitsgrupp CAM • CIRP (Internationale Akademie der Fertigungstechniker) Mit der Berufung und aktiven Mitarbeit in diesen Organisationen war eine Plattform für die deutsch-deutsche und darüber hinaus internationale Kooperation gegeben. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt für den geordneten Informationsaustausch im Rahmen der gesamten dynamischen Entwicklung im Gebiet der Produktionsautomatisierung war dabei die im 3-Jahres-Rhythmus durchgeführte Konferenzserie PROLAMAT (Programming Languages for Machine Tools), gestartet 1969 in Rom. Im weiteren Verlauf wurde dieser Begriff viel breiter für das gesamte Gebiet der automatisierten Informationsverarbeitung und Fertigung erweitert. Ein besonderer Höhepunkt war dabei die erfolgreichste PROLAMAT-Konferenz 1988 in Dresden. Parallel dazu erfolgten an der TU Dresden Entwicklungen in Richtung CAD/CAM-Labor und später CIM-TT (CIM-Technologietransferzentrum). Damit war an der TU Dresden 1989/90 ein Entwicklungsstand gegeben, der unmittelbar zu gemeinsamen deutsch-deutschen und internationalen EU-Projekten genutzt werden konnte. Dieses hohe Entwicklungsniveau wurde zur offiziellen Eröffnung des CIM-TT-Zentrums in den Eröffnungsreferaten durch den damaligen Wissenschaftsminister Dr. Riesenhuber und Ministerpräsident Prof. Biedenkopf gewürdigt. Durch die zum gleichen Zeitpunkt verfügte veränderte Nutzung des für das CIM-TT im Aufbau befindliche Gebäude durch die neugegründete Juristische Fakultät wurde der erfolgreich vorbereitete Weg verhindert. Unabhängig davon blieb meine fachliche Orientierung mit den gravierenden Weiterentwicklungen eng verbunden. Dazu trug das Sabbatical-Jahr in Norwegen und den USA 1992 maßgeblich bei. Mit dem Forschungsaufenthalt war die Entscheidungsvorbereitung für die vorgesehene Groß-Investition für das neueste generative Verfahren verbunden. Gleichzeitig mit dem fundierten Nachweis der bestgeeigneten sog. Rapid-Prototyping-Anlage vom deutschen Anbieter EOS München war die TU Dresden auf diesem neuen High-Tech-Gebiet 1992 in einer anerkannten Spitzenposition. Mit meiner Publikation eines der ersten Fachbücher im Gebiet Advanced Prototyping (jetzt Additiv Manufacturing) war darüber hinaus eine gute Basis für weitere innovative Aktivitäten gegeben Dazu gehört die Gründung einer High-Tech-Firma (SFM - Schnelle Fertigung von Modellen) mit bemerkenswerten beispielgebenden Ergebnissen. Hervorgehoben soll die zwanzigjährige aktive Kooperation mit der Universität Stellenbosch (RSA - Republik Südafrika), die unter anderem mit meiner Berufung zum Extraordinary Professor im Jahr 2003 verbunden ist. Mit der Eröffnung eines Technologie-Zentrums nach dem Vorbild des ursprünglichen CIM TT -Zentrums der TU Dresden konnte für Südafrika ein wertvoller Beitrag geleistet werden. Das gesamte Lebenswerk ist gekennzeichnet durch die Entwicklungsschritte von der Mathematisierung über die Algorithmierung bis hin zur Programmierung vielfältiger technologischer Sachverhalte. Die Ergebnisse sind in einer Anzahl von persönlichen Fachbüchern (z.T. übersetzt in das Russische und Ungarische) wie auch Konferenzberichten und mehr als 200 Veröffentlichungen (deutsch und englisch) dokumentiert.

La present tesi doctoral s’ha centrat en el repte d’aconseguir, mitjançant Fabricació Additiva (FA), models per a assaig quirúrgic, sota la premissa que els equips per fer-los haurien de ser accessibles a l’àmbit hospitalari. L’objectiu és facilitar l’extensió de l’ús dels prototips com a eina de preparació d’operacions quirúrgiques, transformant la pràctica mèdica actual de la mateixa manera que en el seu moment ho van fer tecnologies com les que van facilitar l’ús de radiografies. El motiu d’utilitzar FA, en lloc de tecnologies més tradicionals, és la seva capacitat de materialitzar de forma directa les dades digitals obtingudes de l’anatomia del pacient mitjançant sistemes d’escanejat tridimensional, fent possible l’obtenció de models personalitzats. Els resultats es centren en la generació de nou coneixement sobre com aconseguir equipaments d’impressió 3D multimaterials accessibles que permetin l’obtenció de models mimètics respecte als teixits vius. Per facilitar aquesta buscada extensió de la tecnologia, s’ha focalitzat en les tecnologies de codi obert com la Fabricació per Filament Fos (FFF) i similars basades en líquids catalitzables. La recerca s’alinea dins l’activitat de desenvolupament de la FA al CIM UPC, i en aquest àmbit concret amb la col·laboració amb l’Hospital Sant Joan de Déu de Barcelona (HSJD). El primer bloc de la tesi inclou la descripció de l’estat de l’art, detallant les tecnologies existents i la seva aplicació a l’entorn mèdic. S’han establert per primer cop unes bases de caracterització dels teixits vius -sobretot tous- per donar suport a la selecció de materials que els puguin mimetitzar en un procés de FA, a efectes de millorar l’experiència d’assaig dels cirurgians. El caràcter rígid dels materials majoritàriament usats en impressió 3D els fa poc útils per simular tumors i altres referències anatòmiques. De forma successiva, es tracten paràmetres com la densitat, la viscoelasticitat, la caracterització dels materials tous a la indústria, l’estudi del mòdul elàstic de teixits tous i vasos, la duresa d’aquests, i requeriments com l’esterilització dels models. El segon bloc comença explorant la impressió 3D mitjançant FFF. Es classifiquen les variants del procés des del punt de vista de la multimaterialitat, essencial per fer models d’assaig quirúrgic, diferenciant entre solucions multibroquet i de barreja al capçal. S’ha inclòs l’estudi de materials (filaments i líquids) que serien més útils per mimetitzar teixits tous. Es constata com en els líquids, en comparació amb els filaments, la complexitat del treball en processos de FA és més elevada, i es determinen formes d’imprimir materials molt tous. Per acabar, s’exposen sis casos reals de col·laboració amb l’HJSD, una selecció d’aquells en els que el doctorand ha intervingut en els darrers anys. L’origen es troba en la dificultat de l’abordatge d’operacions de resecció de tumors infantils com el neuroblastoma, i a la iniciativa del Dr. Lucas Krauel. Finalment, el Bloc 3 té per objecte explorar nombrosos conceptes (fins a 8), activitat completada al llarg dels darrers cinc anys amb el suport dels mitjans del CIM UPC i de l’activitat associada a treballs finals d’estudis d’estudiants de la UPC, arribant-se a materialitzar equipaments experimentals per validar-los. La recerca ampla i sistemàtica al respecte fa que s’estigui més a prop de disposar d’una solució d’impressió 3D multimaterial de sobretaula. Es determina que la millor via de progrés és la de disposar d’una pluralitat de capçals independents a fi de capacitar la impressora 3D per integrar diversos conceptes estudiats, materialitzant-se una possible solució. Cloent la tesi, es planteja com seria un equipament d’impressió 3D per a models d’assaig quirúrgic, a fi de servir de base per a futurs desenvolupaments.
La presente tesis doctoral se ha centrado en el reto de conseguir, mediante Fabricación Aditiva (FA), modelos para ensayo quirúrgico, bajo la premisa que los equipos para obtenerlos tendrían que ser accesibles al ámbito hospitalario. El objetivo es facilitar la extensión del uso de modelos como herramienta de preparación de operaciones quirúrgicas, transformando la práctica médica actual de la misma manera que, en su momento, lo hicieron tecnologías como las que facilitaron el uso de radiografías. El motivo de utilizar FA, en lugar de tecnologías más tradicionales, es su capacidad de materializar de forma directa los datos digitales obtenidos de la anatomía del paciente mediante sistemas de escaneado tridimensional, haciendo posible la obtención de modelos personalizados. Los resultados se centran en la generación de nuevo conocimiento para conseguir equipamientos de impresión 3D multimateriales accesibles que permitan la obtención de modelos miméticos respecto a los tejidos vivos. Para facilitar la buscada extensión de la tecnología, se ha focalizado en las tecnologías de código abierto como la Fabricación por Hilo Fundido (FFF) y similares basadas en líquidos catalizables. Esta investigación se alinea dentro de la actividad de desarrollo de la FA en el CIM UPC, y en este ámbito concreto con la colaboración con el Hospital Sant Joan de Déu de Barcelona (HSJD). El primer bloque de la tesis incluye la descripción del estado del arte, detallando las tecnologías existentes y su aplicación al entorno médico. Se han establecido por primera vez unas bases de caracterización de los tejidos vivos – principalmente blandos – para dar apoyo a la selección de materiales que los puedan mimetizar en un proceso de FA, a efectos de mejorar la experiencia de ensayo de los cirujanos. El carácter rígido de los materiales mayoritariamente usados en impresión 3D los hace poco útiles para simular tumores y otras referencias anatómicas. De forma sucesiva, se tratan parámetros como la densidad, la viscoelasticidad, la caracterización de materiales blandos en la industria, el estudio del módulo elástico de tejidos blandos y vasos, la dureza de los mismos, y requerimientos como la esterilización de los modelos. El segundo bloque empieza explorando la impresión 3D mediante FFF. Se clasifican las variantes del proceso desde el punto de vista de la multimaterialidad, esencial para hacer modelos de ensayo quirúrgico, diferenciando entre soluciones multiboquilla y de mezcla en el cabezal. Se ha incluido el estudio de materiales (filamentos y líquidos) que serían más útiles para mimetizar tejidos blandos. Se constata como en los líquidos, en comparación con los filamentos, la complejidad del trabajo en procesos de FA es más elevada, y se determinan formas de imprimir materiales muy blandos. Para acabar, se exponen seis casos reales de colaboración con el HJSD, una selección de aquellos en los que el doctorando ha intervenido en los últimos años. El origen se encuentra en la dificultad del abordaje de operaciones de resección de tumores infantiles como el neuroblastoma, y en la iniciativa del Dr. Lucas Krauel. Finalmente, el Bloque 3 desarrolla numerosos conceptos (hasta 8), actividad completada a lo largo de los últimos cinco años con el apoyo de los medios del CIM UPC y de la actividad asociada a trabajos finales de estudios de estudiantes de la UPC, llegándose a materializar equipamientos experimentales para validarlos. La investigación amplia y sistemática al respecto hace que se esté más cerca de disponer de una solución de impresión 3D multimaterial de sobremesa. Se determina que la mejor vía de progreso es la de disponer de una pluralidad de cabezales independientes, a fin de capacitar la impresora 3D para integrar diversos conceptos estudiados, materializándose una posible solución. Para cerrar la tesis, se plantea cómo sería un equipamiento de impresión 3D para modelos de ensayo quirúrgico, a fin de servir de base para futuros desarrollos.

The importance of integrating design and manufacturing becomes apparent when the increase in the degree of difficulty of change is observed as the product development proceeds from concept to production in a serial engineering process. The greatest opportunity in design for manufacture occurs at the initial design stage before any commitments to tooling and equipment have been made. This research develops a framework and an implementation system dealing with integration of design, manufacturing and economic aspects in the development of a product. The objective is to evaluate process technology for a specified product design and to identify the best work/tool material combination and production conditions to optimize the production process. A commercial CAD/CAM package (SmartCAM) playing roles as a part design tool, a processing time simulator, and a NC code generator is integrated with a manufacturing database, and a machining cost model. This integrated system runs in Microsoft Windows environment under an external program which not only coordinates the activities of various modules but also enhances the capabilities of SmartCAM. This system allows product design evaluation for economic and technical criteria and recommends best manufacturing environment. An NC program containing recommended machining parameters is generated. Furthermore, the system reports on tool wear on each tool per part manufactured. This information is useful for cost analysis as well as for producing a tool replacement schedule.

Abstract:
The mass customisation manufacturing (MCM) paradigm has created a problem in manufacturing control implementation, as each individual customer has the potential to disrupt the operations of production. The aim of this study was to characterise the manufacturing effects of customers’ decisions in product configuration, in order to research steady state control requirements and work-in-process distributions for effective MCM operations. A research method involving both analytic and empirical reasoning was used in characterising the distributed control environment of manufacturing systems involved in MCM. Sequences of job arrivals into each manufacturing system, due to customers’ decisions in product configuration, were analysed as Bernoulli processes. A customer model based on this analysis captured the correlation in product configuration decisions over time. Closed form analytic models were developed from first principles, which described the steady state behaviour of flow controlled manufacturing systems under generalised clearing policy and uncorrelated job arrival sequences. Empirical analysis of data sets achieved through discrete event simulation was used in adjusting the models to account for more complex cases involving multiple job types and varying correlation. Characteristic response surfaces were shown to exist over the domains of manufacturing system load and job arrival sequence correlation. A novel manufacturing flow control method, termed biased minimum feedback (BMF) was developed. BMF was shown to posses the capability to distribute work-in-process within the entire manufacturing facility through work-in-process regulation at each manufacturing system, so as to increase the performance of downstream assembly stations fed from parallel upstream processing stations. A case study in the production of a configurable product was used in presenting an application for the models and methods developed during this research. The models were shown to be useful in predicting steady state control requirements to increase manufacturing performance.

Mass producing custom products requires an innovative type of manufacturing environment. Manufacturing environments at present do not possess the flexibility to generate mass produced custom products. Manufacturers’ rapid response in producing these custom products in relation to demand, yields several beneficial results from both a customer and financial perspective. Current reconfigurable manufacturing environments are yet neither financially feasible nor viable to implement. To provide a solution to the production of mass customised products, research can facilitate the development of a distinctive hybrid manufacturing cell, composed of characteristics inherent in existing manufacturing paradigms. Distinctive hybrid manufacturing cell research and development forms an environment where Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) cells operate in a Reconfigurable Manufacturing environment. The development of this Hybrid Reconfigurable Computer Integrated Manufacturing (HRCIM) cell resulted in functionalities that enabled the production of mass customised products. Manufacturing characteristics of the HRCIM cell were composed of key Reconfigurable Manufacturing System (RMS) features and CIM capabilities. This project required hardware to be used in developing an integrated HRCIM cell. The cell consisted of storage systems, material handling equipment and processing stations. Specific material handling equipment was enhanced in its functionality by incorporating RMS characteristics to its existing structure. The hardware behaviour was coordinated from software. This facilitated the autonomous HRCIM cell behaviour which was derived from the mechatronic approach. The software composed of HRCIM events that were defined by its unique programming language. Highlighted software functionalities included prioritisation scheduling that resulted from customer order input. Performance data, extracted from each type of equipment, were used to parameterise a simulated HRCIM cell. During operation, the cell was frequently introduced to an irregular flow of different product geometries, which required different processing requirements. This irregularity represented mass customisation. The simulated HRCIM cell provided detailed manufacturing results. Significant results consisted of storage times, queueing times and cycle times.

Abstract:
Transfer of information between CAD models and downstream manufacturing process planning software typically involves redundant user interaction. Many existing tools are process-centric and unsuited for selection of a "best process" in the context of existing concurrent engineering design tools. A computer based Feature-Recognition (FR) process is developed to extract critical manufacturing features from engineering product CAD models. FR technology is used for automating the extraction of data from CAD product models and uses wire-frame geometry extracted from an IGES neutral file format. Existing hint-based feature recognition techniques have been extended to encompass a broader range of manufacturing domains than typical in the literature, by utilizing a combination of algorithms, each successful at a limited range of features. Use of wire-frame models simplifies product geometry and has the potential to support rapid manufacturing shape evaluation at the conceptual design stage. Native CAD files are converted to IGES neutral files to provide geometry data marshalling to remove variations in user modelling practice, and to provide a consistent starting point for FR operations. Wire-frame models are investigated to reduce computer resources compared to surface and solid models, and provide a means to recover intellectual property in terms of manufacturing design intent from legacy and contemporary product models. Geometric ambiguity in regard to what is ?solid? and what is not has plagued wire-frame FR development in the past. A new application of crossing number theory (CNT) has been developed to solve the wire-frame ambiguity problem for a range of test parts. The CNT approach works satisfactorily for products where all faces of the product can be recovered and is tested using a variety of mechanical engineering parts. Platform independent tools like Extensible Mark-up Language are used to capture data from the FR application and provide a means to separate FR and decision support applications. Separate applications are composed of reusable software modules that may be combined as required. Combining rule-based and case-based reasoning provides decision support to the manufacturing application as a means of rejecting unsuitable processes on functional and economic grounds while retaining verifiable decision pathways to satisfy industry regulators.

The work related to the project of this dissertation will consist of an analysis of the technological evolution of the machining processes with CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines regarding the new concept of Industry 4.0. The concept fits into the current transformation process for the fourth industrial revolution, such as integrated Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) within the manufacturing processes using the Internet of Things (IoT) in industrial processes. Faced with technological advances, the processes of Industrial Engineering in machining using CNC machines must undergo adaptations, aiming at substantial increases in the operational effectiveness. Thus, an approach will be made to understand how current processes can adapt to the concept under study when analyzing the evolution of the machining tools for CNC machines in the face of new processes. A thorough study will be done to adapt the methodology of Industry 4.0 applying it to the machining processes in CNC Machines. Thereby, a proposal for future applications will be given on the topics studied. The methodology will be based entirely on a documental analysis research strategy. The virtual technology in machining tools is still a subject in development, being one of the main factors to be understood in this dissertation. In this study, it will be possible to analyze the main factors that can influence directly or indirectly the production processes of a factory with CNC machines. It will be explored and studied the types of machining processes for CNC machines and the types of machining tools developed with virtual technology. When we are talking about virtual technology, we are usually addressing the need for software. In CNC machining operations, there is a CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) software that performs machining simulations for CNC machines. Thus, a study and analysis of a production system involving a CAM software, a tool with virtual technology and CNC machines will be done to verify how this set can work encompassed and what changes this production model introduces. In the sequence of this study, an idea of a new production system will be proposed, allowing for a better understanding of the possibilities for application of new approaches in the future.
O trabalho relacionado ao projeto desta dissertação de mestrado consistirá de uma análise da evolução tecnológica dos processos de usinagem com as máquinas CNC (Comando Numérico Computacional) em relação ao novo conceito da Indústria 4.0. O conceito se enquadra no atual processo de transformação da quarta revolução industrial, com os Sistemas Ciber-Físicos integrados (CPS) dentro dos processos de fabricação que utilizam a Internet das Coisas (IoT) em processos industriais. Diante dos avanços tecnológicos, os processos de Engenharia Industrial em usinagem utilizando máquinas CNC devem sofrer adaptações, visando um aumento substancial na eficácia operacional. Assim, uma abordagem será feita para entender como os processos atuais podem se adaptar ao conceito em estudo, visando também uma análise da evolução das ferramentas de usinagem para máquinas CNC em face de novos processos. Um estudo minucioso será feito para adaptar a metodologia da Indústria 4.0, aplicando-a aos processos de usinagem em máquinas CNC. Com isso, algumas proposta para aplicações futuras serão apresentadas para os tópicos estudados. A metodologia será totalmente baseada em uma estratégia de investigação documental. A tecnologia virtual em ferramentas de usinagem ainda é um assunto em desenvolvimento, sendo um dos principais fatores a serem compreendidos na realização deste trabalho. Neste estudo, será possível analisar os principais fatores que podem influenciar direta ou indiretamente nos processos de produção de uma fábrica com máquinas CNC. Serão explorados e estudados os tipos de processos de usinagem para máquinas CNC e os tipos de ferramentas de usinagem desenvolvidas com tecnologia virtual. Quando abordamos o assunto sobre tecnologia virtual, geralmente estamos a lidar com a necessidade de um software. Nas operações de usinagem CNC, existe um software CAM (Manufatura Assistida por Computador) que realiza simulações de usinagem para máquinas CNC. Assim, um estudo e análise do sistema de produção envolvendo um software CAM, uma ferramenta com tecnologia virtual e máquinas CNC será feito para verificar como este conjunto pode trabalhar englobado e quais as mudanças para esse modelo de produção. Na sequência dessa análise, será proposta uma ideia de um novo sistema de produção, que permite uma melhor compreensão das possibilidades de aplicação no futuro das novas abordagens.

Abstract:

A residential botanical air filtration system (Biowall) to investigate the potential for using phytoremediation to remove contaminants from indoor air was developed. A full scale and functioning prototype was installed in a residence located in West Lafayette, Indiana. The prototype was integrated into the central Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system of the home. This research evaluated the Biowall operation to further its potential as an energy efficient and sustainable residential air filtration system.

The main research effort began after the Biowall was installed in the residence. A field evaluation, which involved a series of measurements and data analysis, was conducted to identify treatments to improve Biowall performance. The study was conducted for approximately one year (Spring 2017-Spring 2018). Based on the initial data set, prioritization of systems in need of improvement was identified and changes were imposed. Following a post-treatment testing period, a comparison between the initial and final performances was completed with conclusions based on this comparison.

The engineering and analysis reported in this document focus on the air flow path through the Biowall, plant growth, and the irrigation system. The conclusions provide an extensive evaluation of the design, operation, and function of the Biowall subsystems under review.
