In this thesis efficient techniques to solve complex 3-D electromechanical problems are developed. Finite element discretization of complex structures such as the micromirror lead to thousands of internal degrees of freedom. Their mostly rigid motion is exploited leading to a mixed rigid-elastic formulation. This formulation's advantage is apparent when it is incorporated in an efficient coupled domain simulation technique and examples are presented exploring geometry effects on device behavior. Then for system level simulation where full device simulation costs add up we need models with much reduced order with little degradation in accuracy. We describe a model reduction formulation for the electromechanical problem based on implicit techniques which accurately capture the original model behavior.

In air-packaged surface micromachined devices and microfluidic devices the surface to volume ratio is such that drag forces play a very important role in device behavior and performance. Especially for surface micromachined devices, the amount of drag is greatly influenced by the presence of the nearby substrate. In this thesis a precorrected FFT accelerated boundary element method specialized for calculating the drag force on structures above a substrate is presented. The method uses the Green's function for Stokes flow bounded by an infinite plane to implicitly represent the device substrate, requiring a number of modifications to the precorrected FFT algorithm. To calculate the velocity due to force distribution on a panel near a substrate an analytical panel integration algorithm was also developed. Computational results demonstrate that the use of the implicit representation of the substrate reduces computation time and memory while increasing the solution accuracy. The results also demonstrate that surprisingly, and unfortunately, even though representing the substrate implicitly has many benefits it does not completely decouple discretization fineness from distance to the substrate. To simulate the time dependent behavior of micromechanical and microfluidic systems, a stable velocity implicit time stepping scheme coupling the precorrected FFT solver with rigid body dynamics was introduced and demonstrated. The ODE library was integrated with the solver to enable the simulation of systems with collisions, contacts and friction. Several techniques for speeding up the calculation of each time step were presented and tested. The time integration algorithm was successfully used to simulate the behavior of several real-world microfluidic devices.

Abstract:
Since the proliferation of CAD tools, visualizations have gained importance.. They provide invaluable visual feedback at the time of design, regardless whether it is fbi civil engineering or electronic circuit design-layout. Typically dynamic visualizations are produced in a two phase process: the calculation of positions and rendering of the image and its presentation as an animated video clip. This is a slow process that is unsuitable fbr interactive CAD visualizations, because the former two require finite element analysis Faster hardware eases the problem, but does not overcome it, because the algorithms are still too slow. Our MEMS CAD project works towards methods and techniques that are suitable for interactive design, with faster methods. The purpose of this PhD thesis is to contribute to the design of an interactive virtual prototyping of Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS) This research comprises the analysis of the visualization techniques that are appropriate for these tasks and identifying the difficulties that need to be overcome to be able to offer a MEMS design engineer a meaningful and interactive CAD design environment Such a VR-CAD system is being built in our research group with many participants in the team. Two particular problems are being addressed by presenting algorithms for truthful VR visualization methods: one is for displaying objects that are different in size on the computer screen. The other is modelling unsynchronized motion dynamics, that is different objects moving simultaneously at very high and vety low speed, by proposing stroboscopic simulation to present their dynamics on the screen They require specific size scaling and time scaling and filtering. It is these issues and challenges which make the design of a MEMS CAD tool different from other CAD tools. In the thesis I present algorithms for displaying animated virtual reality for MEMS virtual prototyping in a physically truthful way by using the simulated stroboscopic illumination to filter animated images to make it possible to show unsynchronized motion.. A scaling method was used to show or hide objects which cannot be shown simultaneously on the computer screen because of their large difference in size. The visualization of objects being designed and their animations is done with much consideration of visual perception and computer capability, which is rising attention, but not too often mentioned in the visualization domain.

Abstract: The goal of this work was to review the specialized literature for the development of technological applications connected with automation of myoelectrical prosthesis of upper limbs throughout the years, from World War 2 post-war solutions to the technology currently applied. The concept of myoelectrical prosthesis presupposes implies the acquisition and treatment of the myoelectrical signal of a residual limb which is used to start an actuator, which in turn activates the terminal tool. Aiming at encountering a solution that could be both compatible and harmoniously applicable to the human body, the author engaged in studying anatomy, upper limbs articular physiology, the nature and characteristics of the myoelectrical signal in addition to the technologies utilized to conceive mechatronic prototypes, i.e. CAD-CAE-CAM and the creation of dedicated electronic circuits to collect and process the myoelectrical signals. Abstract:
Thesis (M. Tech. (Design and Studio Art)) -- Central University of Technology, Free State, 2014
This quantitative research project investigates the utilization of emerging technologies within the arts with a view on establishing an interdisciplinary approach between ceramics and engineering. The traditional manufacturing method of producing master moulds is a time-consuming process for the studio ceramicist. This study explores whether computer-aided design (CAD) and computer numerical control (CNC) milling can accelerate the design and manufacturing process when developing master moulds as an alternative to using traditional methods. It investigates whether SolidWorks® can be applied as a suitable CAD design tool for the creation of ceramic vessel forms in order to reduce the design development time frame. It furthermore investigates whether CNC milling can be used as a viable manufacturing technology for the making of vessel prototypes and master moulds from CAD data, the overall objective being to improve and accelerate the plaster of Paris master mould manufacturing process for the batch production of studio-based ceramic artefacts. Findings from this study indicate that emerging technologies have a lot to offer the artist when it comes to providing new possibilities for the creation of artefacts and that SolidWorks® and CNC milling can be utilized as a viable interdisciplinary manufacturing approach between ceramics and digital manufacturing technologies.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to study the design possibilities for supporting explorative form-finding in 3D modeling applications. For today’s many design professions, 3D forms are achieved partly in engagement with digital environments. Use of software has far exceeded final idea execution, extending to the early phases of design work in which the outcome is not predetermined. This insight led designers of interactive systems support sketching and ideating activities by reducing the risk of experimentation and cognitive effort demanded from user. Yet, there has been less emphasis on traditional design and craft practice that acknowledges engagement with materials and effort spent on work as an integral part of creative process. The notion of exploration in the scope of this thesis attempts to incorporate such aspects. Relevant literature about workshop practice in design and craft has been reviewed, as well as examples of CAD technologies that aid designers. In this light, HCI perspectives on the design of creativity support tools and games have been discussed. The thesis work aimed to concretize this background by building a design strategy and an interactive artifact. A 3D form-finding application concept using objects in modeling space to indirectly manipulate geometry, “kfields”, has been developed and evaluated with users at various stages. The thesis concludes by reflecting on the findings of different design stages and proposing further directions for design.

Abstract:
Currently, computer-aided design (CAD) tools are actively developing, which cannot but affect the efficiency and variety of implementation of construction processes. Among the wide range of CAD variations presented, a special place is now occupied by the promotion of intelligent, or rather informational design. BIM (from English Building Information Modeling), namely building information modeling, has a number of undeniable advantages over the established CAD system (from English Computer-Aided Design). Also, BIM technologies have impressive functionality, since their use is advisable not only at the design stage, but also at the stages of construction and operation of buildings and structures. The purpose of the research work is to develop a software module (plug-in) for the Revit 2019 software, the plug-in automates one of the building design processes, namely the interior decoration process. Automation can only be implemented based on information from the BIM model.

Abstract:
