Abstract:
With regard to the construction of sense in the Chronicle of Emperors, an inherent didactic concept can be detected. New presentation techniques of the literary medium of the 12th century like a hero`s two-fold adventure pathway to maturity allow for more complex views of the well-known Caesar tales. On the other hand, dialogue is still dominant as a rhetorical means as structure and narration of the Charlemagne and the Constantine tales disclose. As a final aspect, the Continuatio, the first Bavarian continuation of the Chronicle of Emperors, is under scrutiny. The progressive concept of intertextuality concentrates on the new text, not entirely ignoring the original text, but rather embedding old context in new surroundings.

Shaw, Millo Lawrence Goodship. "Drusus Caesar, the son of Tiberius." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31510.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation attempts to deduce from the ancient sources and assess the life of Drusus, the son of Tiberius, focussing upon his position and conduct within the Julio-Claudian principate and succession. The study is worthwhile, but difficult. Drusus was a prominent member of the imperial family, but the surviving literary references to him are deficient in both detail and quality, probably because the original sources were biased in favour of the Julian side of the family, chiefly represented by Germanicus, and against the Claudian members, like Drusus. He was born on October 7th, probably between 15 and 13 BC. His father, Tiberius Claudius Nero, had illustrious patrician forbears and was stepson to Augustus Caesar, while his mother, Vipsania Agrippina, was daughter of the Emperor's right-hand man, Marcus Agrippa. Drusus was initially excluded from the imperial succession because he lacked direct kinship with the Emperor, but in AD 4 he was made the adoptive grandson of Augustus and fourth in the line of succession after Tiberius, Agrippa Postumus, and Germanicus, who were also adopted. His name was changed to Drusus Julius Caesar, reflecting his full-fledged membership in the Julian dynasty. He received extraordinary honours, including a distinguished marriage to his cousin, Livilla, accelerated promotion through the cursus honorum, and official pairing with his adoptive brother, Germanicus. Upon the deaths of Augustus and Postumus and the accession of Tiberius in AD 14, Drusus stood second in the succession. He lived up to his high position. In 14 he expeditiously suppressed a dangerous mutiny among the Pannonian legions, and from late 17 to early 20 his activities along the Danube frontier so weakened the German tribes that they would not bother the Empire for another fifty years. As a civilian magistrate and senator he acted competently and fairly. He was praised for checking grave abuses of the law of treason. He appears to have had an open, friendly disposition and a beneficial influence upon the Emperor. Germanicus' death in AD 19 left Drusus as Tiberius' primary successor. Tiberius formally confirmed his new status by sharing a consulship with him in 21 and, in particular, by requesting the tribunician power for him in 22. Numismatic evidence suggests the possibility that, by 22 or 23 at the latest, the Emperor transferred the imperial dynasty to Drusus as well by placing his twin sons, born probably near the end of 19, ahead of the sons of Germanicus in the succession. Tragically, in September, 23, at the very peak of his career, Drusus died. At the time he was thought to have passed away from natural causes, but in 31 the stunning charge was made that he had been poisoned by his wife and others in conspiracy with the commander of the Praetorian Guard, Aelius Sejanus. The allegation was believed by Tiberius and the source tradition, but the evidence preserved in the historical record is inconclusive. Drusus’ death proved a significant loss both for his family and for the principate. The dynasty shifted back to the Julians and Tiberius' regime began to fall away from the moderation, justice, and efficient administration that had prevailed while Drusus was alive. Perhaps worst of all, the way was opened for Caligula to become the next Emperor. If Drusus had survived to succeed his father, the record of his conduct and character suggests that his reign could have matched Augustus’ in excellence.

Abstract:

Abstract:
By enumerating the virtues of the prince and guiding him morally on how to act for the benefit of the whole community, the Epistulae ad Caesarem are faithful to the principles that characterize the orator as uir bonus dicendi peritus. However, the verisimilitude of treatment given to the subject, regarding the danger of civil wars, contributed to deny their artificiality. On the one hand, the analysis in this work will lead a discussion about the educational motivations for urging an emperor to quell civil strife, and on the other hand it will present a definition of these documents\' gender. It intends to demonstrate how they are figurated as an image of deliberative eloquence similar to the truth, written in an embellished language in order to delight an audience. Therefore, not only do they demonstrate the adequate education of the orator but also a diligent study of virtues of the statesman.

Abstract:
Context: Among women with a prior caesarean section, 82.2% will have another caesarean delivery. The Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Canada (SOGC) recommends that physicians offer medically eligible women with a previous caesarean section a trial of labour, to attempt a vaginal delivery. With greater inclusion of the patient in medical decision-making, it is important to understand women's part in this decision-making process. Objectives: To describe women's decision-making by looking at: 1) whether the decision was reported as primarily physician- or patient-driven 2) women's reasons for repeat caesarean section, 3) women's main information sources. Methods: For one year women booked for a repeat elective caesarean section, who were eligible for a trial of labour according to the 2005 guidelines of the SOGC, were approached with the survey in hospital post-partum, and invited to participate in the study. Chart review was used to determine eligibility, and obtain other medical characteristics. Results: Most of the women (77 %) reported being involved in the decision about their caesarean section. However, almost a quarter reported wholly physician-driven decisions (23 %). The main reasons women selected for a caesarean section related to their previous birth experience, and the physician's recommendation. Women born outside of Canada, with less education or who were allophones, were less likely to report using certain information sources, such as the Internet, and to find the information in the hospital-provided pamphlet useful. All in all, the women who received less information were more likely to report solely physician-driven decisions. Conclusion: Although patient involvement in decision-making is the norm, some decisions for caesarean section are made without the patient. Women's concerns, such as fear of a failed vaginal delivery, play an important role in this decision-making. Overall, immigrant women may understand less about their birth options than their Canadian peers. Addressing these concerns during pre-natal counselling may aid more fully informed consent, help assuage women's fears of vaginal birth and may increase the number of women attempting a trial of labour.

Abstract:
This thesis attempts to present for the first time a detailed corpus and die-study of two major Roman coinages of the third century AD, the issues of the mints of Antioch in Syria and Caesarea in Cappadocia from the reign of Gordian III (AD 238-44). The coinage of Antioch consisted of two series of radiates with Roman legends and three series of tetradrachms with Greek legends and 1000 specimens of the former and 318 of the latter are included in the die-study. The die-study of Caesarea includes 113 silver tridrachms, didrachms and drachms and 191 bronze coins in three denominations. There is a full discussion of the types, legends, weights, die-axes and metallic content of each issue and of the methodology used in the die-studies. The study starts by showing how the radiates of Antioch can be distinguished from those of Rome, something that has not been satisfactorily done before. The lack of a clearly explained method of distinguishing the products of these two mints has bedevilled all existing publications of these coins. The thesis also looks for the first time at the relationship between the striking of radiates and tetradrachms at Antioch, the former coins having traditionally been classed as `Roman' and the latter as `Greek imperial'. It is argued that the Greek legend issues of both mints should be regarded as much an imperial coinage as the radiates of Antioch. It is also shown that the dies for the coinage of Caesarea were produced by the same engravers as worked at Antioch, something that had not been noticed before. Further chapters examine chronological problems, the metal content of the silver coins of Gordian's reign, the evidence for their circulation in hoards and site finds and the historical events of Gordian's reign. These findings are summarized in the conclusion, which sets the coinages of Antioch and Caesarea in their historical context. The 50 plates illustrate all the obverse dies, except for the second series of radiates from Antioch.

Abstract:
The three works of Procopius of Caesarea, the History of the Wars, the Buildings and the Secret History, form a corpus which can be profitably studied as a whole. My thesis is a typology of the visual in Procopius’ corpus, which is embedded in a study of narrative technique. It concerns itself with the representation of material reality and the complex relationship between materiality and the text. It utilises the digressive and the descriptive as an indirect entry point to expose Procopius’ literary finesse and his use of poikilia. In the first half of this thesis, the main object of my study is the representation of the material world in Procopius. The first chapter is devoted to the first book of the Buildings as it depicts the city of Constantinople. The second chapter moves to the representation of space and the third chapter to that of objects of all sizes and kinds. From these three different angles, I demonstrate how the visual is deeply charged with both ideological and meta-textual intentions. The second half of the thesis goes beyond materiality to examine what I discuss as the imaginaire of Procopius. The fourth chapter examines the way violence is depicted in a material and spectacular manner as well as its meta-textual implications, and the fifth and final chapter addresses the omnipresence of the supernatural in the corpus as well as Procopius’ self-representation as narrator and character. While preoccupied to some extent with ideological and political concerns, this thesis is first and foremost centred on the text itself and how its relationship to the description of material culture throws light on a crucial author on the cusp between the classical and the medieval imaginaire, one of the most significant authors in Byzantine literary culture.

Caesar is a distributed, social code review tool designed for the specific constraints and goals of a programming course. Caesar is capable of scaling to a large and diverse reviewer population, provides automated tools for increasing reviewer efficiency, and implements a social web interface for reviewing that encourages discussion and participation. Our system is implemented in three loosely-coupled components: a language-specific code preprocessor that partitions code into small pieces, filters out uninteresting ones, runs static analysis, and detects clusters of similar code; an incremental task router that dynamically assigns reviewers to tasks; and a language-agnostic web interface for reviewing code. Our evaluation using actual student code and a user study indicate that Caesar provides a significant improvement over existing code review workflows and interfaces. We also believe that this work contributes a modular framework for code reviewing systems that can be easily extended and improved.

Bunni, Adam. "Springtime for Caesar : Vergil's Georgics and the defence of Octavian." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/998.

Full text
Abstract:
Vergil’s Georgics was published in 29 BCE, at a critical point in the political life of Octavian-Augustus. Although his position at the head of state had been confirmed by victory at Actium in 31, his longevity was threatened by his reputation for causing bloodshed during the civil wars. This thesis argues that Vergil, in the Georgics, presents a defence of Octavian against criticism of his past, in order to safeguard his future, and the future of Rome. Through a complex of metaphor and allusion, Vergil engages with the weaknesses in Octavian’s public image in order to diminish their damaging impact. Chapter One examines the way in which the poet invokes and complements the literary tradition of portraying young men as destructive, amorous creatures, through his depiction of iuvenes in the Georgics, in order to emphasise the inevitability of youthful misbehaviour. Since Octavian is still explicitly a iuvenis, he cannot be held accountable for his actions up to this point, including his role in the civil wars. The focus of Chapters Two and Three of this thesis is Vergil’s presentation of the spring season in the Georgics. Vergil’s preoccupation with spring is unorthodox in the context of agricultural didactic; under the influence of the Lucretian figure of Venus, Vergil moulds spring into a symbol of universal creation in nature, a metaphor for a projected revival of Roman affairs under Octavian’s leadership which would subsequently dominate the visual art of the Augustan period. Vergil’s spring is as concerned with the past as it is the future. Vergil stresses the fact that destructive activity can take place in spring, in the form of storms and animal violence; the farmer’s spring labor is characterised as a war against nature, which culminates in the horrific slaughter of oxen demanded by bugonia. In each case destruction is revealed as a necessary prerequisite for some form of creation: animal reproduction, increased crop yield, a renewed population of bees. Thus, the spring creation of a new Rome under Octavian will come as a direct result of the bloodshed of the civil wars, a cataclysm whose horrors are not denied, but whose outcome will ultimately be positive. Octavian is assimilated to Jupiter in his Stoic guise: a providential figure who sends fire and flood to Earth in order to improve mankind.

Ficocelli, Giuseppe. "‘Portfolios of Power’: Julius Caesar in the Late Roman Republic." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/39548.

Full text
Abstract:
Julius Caesar’s rise to power was achieved through a combination of different sources of power. These ‘portfolios of power’ were money and connections, oratory, and religion, and they worked either in conjunction or separately throughout Caesar’s life to further his career. Each portfolio served multiple functions. For instance, connections were used to advocate on his behalf when needed, money was utilised to create financial dependency (i.e. loaning to potential allies), rhetoric was applied to promote himself, while religion was used to assert his hegemony over the Gauls. It was indeed his cultivation and expansion of these diverse portfolios that led to his eventual supremacy over the Roman world. One asset alone would not have sufficed during the various challenges throughout his career. Furthermore, it was his diverse portfolios of power that set him apart from other Roman politicians. For example, Cicero and Pompeius, each relied chiefly on one portfolio to acquire power, oratory for Cicero and military prowess for Pompeius. The extent to which Caesar sought to be sole ruler is debatable, but we can say with confidence that throughout his career, he had clear goals and developed strategies to achieve them.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper examines the Roman invasions of and interactions with Britain in the mid first century BCE and early first century CE and evaluates the results. Specifically, this paper analyzes motives and the actual military events of the invasions of Julius Caesar in 55 and 54 BCE and evaluates their aftermath, leading up to the invasion of Claudius in 43 CE. Caesar’s stated motive for launching the invasion was to prevent the islanders from interfering in the new Roman order being constructed in Gaul. However, as will be shown, Caesar’s more personal motives, in the form of a desire for wealth and glory, played as much if not more of a role in the launching of these expeditions. In light of these motives, the invasions can be defined, at best, as partial successes. The Romans militarily defeated the enemy but failed to materially benefit from that victory. Caesar’s account also leaves numerous points of scholarly debate unresolved on the surface, but a careful examination of the evidence allows us to answer them in part. This paper provides a thorough discussion of this interesting period as well as a look at the motives, actions, and fortunes of the participants. iii

Churchill, Helen. "Caesarean birth : conflict in maternity services." Thesis, Middlesex University, 1994. http://eprints.mdx.ac.uk/6686/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study investigates the history of caesarean section and women's experience of the operation today. There has been no systematic collection of historical data on caesarean section since 1944. This study now constitutes the most comprehensive compilation of the history of the operation to date. It illustrates the development of the medical ethos concerning women as patients and provides the background to the next phase of research: the experience of caesarean section. Previous research on caesarean section has exhaustively analysed the indications for the operation, reasons for the increasing rate and women's perceptions of abdominal delivery. This study differs in eliciting responses from women on a range of issues relating to caesarean birth in order to assess the quality of information given to women in hopital regarding the necessity for caesarean operations and analyse the effects of abdominal birth on women. Women's experiences were examined in a sample of 300 women who had delivered by caesarean section. Significant differences were found in reactions between women who had emergency operations and those whose caesareans were elective. The emergency caesarean women suffered more in all negative measures including increased feelings of pain and depression. Negative sequelae was found to relate to the unexpected nature of emergency operations and the use of general anaesthesia. Subjectively women report that they do not suffer as a result of caesarean birth, yet objectively it is clear that they do. This anomaly is attributed to the unequal relationship between women and doctors. Women feel grateful for the treatment offered by the doctors and therefore do not express dissatisfaction with their care. Recommendations are made suggesting practical ways in which maternity services, in respect of caesarean birth, can be improved.

Taylor-Miller, Leanne. "Caesarean birth: too posh to push, or punished for not pushing? Exploring women's experiences of caesarean birth." Thesis, University of Auckland, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/6046.

Abstract:
Caesarean birth is the mode of delivery for almost a quarter of births in New Zealand (NZ), and as the rate steadily rises, the expectation of a natural birth remains ubiquitous in society. Research investigating the impact of caesarean birth has previously demonstrated mixed findings regarding psychological outcomes, and recently caesareans have become topical with the addition of the idiom too posh to push to our lexicon. This implies that caesarean is an easy option, and may have shaped a sense of stigma against caesareans, particularly elective caesareans. The previous research demonstrating differences in psychological outcomes between planned and unplanned caesareans was conducted when caesarean birth was less common, and tended to be quantitative in design. The purpose of this qualitative research was to investigate the experiences of 32 women, including both first-time and non-first time mothers, who have undergone caesarean birth, half planned and half unplanned, in order to gain insight into their perceptions of their experiences and identify aspects that contributed to positive and negative experiences. Semi-structured interviews were used to explore their perceptions, including how they and others have reacted to their caesarean experience. These interviews were analysed using thematic analysis to identify themes to help to understand their experiences. This research supported a number of previous findings regarding caesarean birth including increased rates of induction associated with caesarean birth; differences in initial interaction between mother and infant for planned or unplanned caesareans; trust in medical experts; low occurrence of 'maternal' request for caesarean; and perceptions of societal attitudes towards caesarean. In addition, this research identified themes regarding the roles of expectations and preferences with the actual caesarean or breast feeding experience, influenced by individual and social factors. Negative outcomes were associated with a lack of reconciliation between actual experience, expectations and preferences; while positive outcomes were associated with effective reconciliation, through the development of rationales, applied both prospectively and retrospectively.

Abstract:
Hur väl uppfylls varje krav i respektive nyhetsartikel? 2.

Hunt, Laura J. "Jesus Caesar : a Roman reading of John 18:28-19:22." Thesis, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, 2017. http://repository.uwtsd.ac.uk/749/.

Full text
Abstract:
Latin use in inscriptions shows evidence of intersections between Roman and Greek languages and culture during the first century CE. Although the provenance for the Gospel of John is not definitively determined, this evidence is present in each proposed location as well as in the text of the Gospel itself (e.g., πραιτώριον in 18:28, 33 and 19:9). This suggests, based on Umberto Eco’s semiotics, that the Roman cultural encyclopaedia could shed light on the Gospel of John, particularly in the Roman trial narrative for a Roman-aware audience. Some words in particular intersect with important Roman concepts: πραιτώριον, βασιλεύς, υἱὸς θεοῦ and ἐξουσία. The phrase Ἰδοὺ ὁ ἄνθρωπος in John 19:5, when analysed from a Roman perspective, seems sufficiently close to hic vir, hic est from Vergil’s Aeneid (6.791) to mark it as a literary allusion. An exegetical analysis of John 18:28—19:22, the passages most imprinted with Latin words and Roman concepts, reveals a Roman Pilate who tests the loyalty of both Jesus and ‘the Jews’ to Caesar. This exegesis, furthermore, provides the data for a social-scientific reading of the passage which constructs a superordinate identity for Romans (and, although outside the main focus of this thesis, for Jews as well). It also conveys a hidden transcript that creates honour for the marginalized Jesus-believers and calls those with power to become vulnerable for the sake of God’s empire. Although others have looked at empire in the Gospel of John, and some have made connections between specific verses and the Roman cultural encyclopaedia (e.g., 19:2), no one has noted the literary allusion in 19:5 nor offered an in-depth and sustained Roman reading of the trial narrative.

Adkins, Austin L. "Military Religio: Caesar's Religiosity Vindicated by Warfare." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2020. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1707401/.

Full text
Abstract:
Gaius Julius Caesar remains one of the most studied characters of antiquity. His personality, political career, and military campaigns have garnered numerous scholarly treatments, as have his alleged aspirations to monarchy and divinity. However, comparatively little detailed work has been done to examine his own personal religiosity and even less attention has been paid to his religion in the context of his military conquests. I argue that Caesar has wrongly been deemed irreligious or skeptical and that his conduct while on campaign demonstrates that he was a religious man. Within the Roman system of religion, ritual participation was more important than faith or belief. Caesar pragmatically manipulated the Romans' flexible religious framework to secure military advantage almost entirely within the accepted bounds of religious conduct. If strict observance of ritual was the measure of Roman religiosity, then Caesar exceeded the religious expectations of his rank and office. The evidence reveals that he was an exemplar of Roman religio throughout both the Gallic Wars (58-51BC) and the subsequent Civil Wars (49-45BC).
