Abstract:
On the Active Use of Caesar in Latin Classes for Advanced Students. Methods for active teaching of the Latin language are usually considered to be best suited for the curriculum of beginners’ classes. Such methods can, however, be used quite efficiently even when teaching advanced students either at High School or University level. Nor does it seem to be necessary to restrict the active use of Latinity to simple conversations only or to avoid using the texts of the classic Roman authors, which students of Latin need to understand well. In short, there is nothing preventing students from becoming familiar with the rules of grammar by means of active exercises. Such familiary furnishes the student with shortcuts to a better understanding of the language itself. This may in turn lead to that very ability to read ancient texts which is, after all, the main object of Latin teaching. The present contribution deals with the use of active methods in the curriculum for Advanced Placement (AP) High School pupils who are taking courses that provide them with academic credits for university qualification in the USA. Examples are taken from Caesar’s Commentarii de bello Gallico, a fundamental text in the AP curriculum as far as prose is concerned. The article deals first with how to explain a text in various ways by means of the Latin language alone, without having recourse to the vernacular. Asking questions, making paraphrases, adding titles, or providing a summary are all alternatives here. Furthermore, dictation is elucidated, and how it can offer a bridge to explaining the text in Latin; so is an active method to explain various grammatical constructions. There then follows the active treatment of grammatical as well as rhetorical figures. Finally, questions of how to compose dialogues, and even how to edit plays for the stage, are addressed. At the end of the essay, the author discusses how to combine textual work with exercises involving describing images in Latin.

Abstract:
In 1583, David Chytraeus (1530–1600), one of the key figures of north German Protestant humanism, published his Latin biographical oration De Carolo Quinto Caesare Augusto Oratio on Emperor Charles V (Holy Roman emperor from 1520 to 1556). Despite the numerous confessional conflicts between the German Protestants and the former Catholic monarch, Chytraeus presented the emperor in a strikingly favourable light. To which degree and in which respects Chytraeus was thereby driven both as a theologian and as a historian to promote the overcoming of the confessional split—which renders the oration on Charles an intriguing document of sixteenth-century religious discourse—will be investigated in this article.

Abstract:
The fifth poem in Horace's first book of Epistles takes the form of an invitation to Torquatus to attend a dinner which the poet is preparing for that evening, the eveof the Emperor's birthday (line 9 eras nato Caesare). The fare will be simple but Horace will see to it that the furnishings, napkins, vessels and plates will be clean and bright and that the company and the seating-plan will be to Torquatus’ taste (21–6). Horace will get Butra and Septicius to be there, and Sabinus, too, as long as he is not kept away by a prior dinner engagement or by a girl he'd rather spend the evening with. With Torquatus and Horace, that makes four or five diners, so that there is room for others before the triclinium is full, although there shouldn't be too many; or, as Horace puts it (28–9):locus est et pluribus umbris;sed nimis arta premunt olidae conuiuia caprae.

Julius Caesar has been remembered in popular memory as a tyrant whose death serves as a warning to future despots. However, this image of Julius Caesar is skewed by several factors that do not acknowledge the unique context of Caesar’s rise to power. The image of Caesar created after his death by his political opponents, alongside modern concepts of government and leadership, portray him as a despot. This paper will examine how this concept is misguided by demonstrating how Caesar’s rise to power was consensual and disproving the claims of his opponents.

Abstract:
Caesar's visit to Troy has always been something of an enigma. Historically, the episode is unattested. Caesar wanders through a congeries of sites at Troy ranging from Ajax's grave on the Rhoetium promontory at its beginning to Priam's Herceian altar at the end. Numerous interpretations have been offered. Bruère has argued for Aeneas' tour through the future site of Rome in Aeneid 8 as a backdrop. Ahl has noted the connection between the ruins of Italy described in Bellum Ciuile (B.C.) 7 and the ruins of Troy in B.C. 9. Rome/Italy and Troy merge in essence as vanishing fabulae, which the poet keeps alive. Zwierlein sees Caesar's visit as modeled on Alexander the Great's visit nearly three hundred years earlier. Caesar through this scene is established as a destroyer of empires, inferior only to Alexander. Ormand stresses Caesar as an authoritative reader of the ruins of Troy, where Caesar reads the Aeneid instead of the Iliad. Rossi similarly focuses on Caesar as reading Troy's ruins to the advantage of the Julian dynasty. Gergo has opened up the passage with the correct observation that Lucan has in mind Aeneas’ katabasis in Aeneid 6. But the relationship between the brief tour at Troy and Aeneid 6 is both more comprehensive and precise. Indeed this essay will present a systematic interpretation of Caesar's tour as a parallel to Aeneid 6 in its entirety, a parallel to which Lucan most likely does not give his character Caesar access.

Abstract:
Lucan's account of Caesar crossing the Rubicon (1.213–22) is dense with metapoetic allusion. Although the river has been specified as a small stream at Caesar's arrival (ut uentum est parui Rubiconis ad undas, 1.185), it becomes swollen, tumidus, as soon as Caesar ‘breaks the delay of war’ and ‘carries his standards in haste over the [now] swollen river’ (inde moras soluit belli tumidumque per amnem | signa tulit propere, 1.204-5). This has been pinpointed both as a metapoetic signpost of Lucan's engagement with the anti-Callimachean swollen river of grandiose epic (Callim. Hymn 2.108-9) at the outbreak of (his) Civil War, and as a programmatic statement that the whole Bellum Ciuile will set up a series of contrasts between Caesar's urgency in crossing boundaries and Lucan's narrative obstructions to or compliances with Caesar's progress. In fact, as Jamie Masters notes, ‘in spite of the “undoing of delay,” the perfect “tulit” and the adverb “propere,” Caesar has not crossed the river yet; or if he has, he must do it again’, precisely at 1.213–22. Within this densely self-reflexive passage, Lucan inserts a palindromic acrostic which signals both the doubling of Caesar's action (or at least the poet's double mention of the action) and Lucan's poetic representation of Caesar taming the forces of nature.

Abstract:
Julius Caesar's "Bellum Ciuile" writes Caesar-articulates a particular construction of its subject: Caesar. The essay shows how writing in the civil war wins and loses the war, and how the writing of the Civil War exploits this throughout its course. The initial suppression of Caesar's letter to the senate in 49 BCE creates a lack which the rest of the text is to supply, and a structure of injustice inflicted on Caesar by villainous manipulation of communiqués. The narrative presents Caesar's withheld claims over and again, in an ever-lengthening set of dramatized formulations and vindications, both in the form of his own behaviour and in its contrast with his enemies'. The many and various roles of writing in the civil war are examined, from orders and despatches to the propagandist war of words, and it is shown how the conflict is moralized through polarity between the letters sent by the two sides. Caesar presents himself as the last proconsular conqueror of the republic, playing the patriotic general from Gaul to Alexandria, where the "Bellum Ciuile" gives out-in time for this the first writer and mythographer of the Roman Empire to hide his hero's overthrow of the political order. It is argued that Caesar runs Bellum Gallicum and "Bellum Ciuile" together to make a seamless continuum, as a vital strategy for occluding, denying, and displacing civil war from the triumphant procession across a welcoming Roman world he offers in the "Bellum Ciuile".

Among them, so that the fetus can be born according to the desired date of the parents, or based on other factors outside of medical conditions. In the implementation of a Caesarean section, medical consent before the Caesarean section is performed is still very necessary to minimize the medical risk that the patient is suspected of experiencing. In addition, with the existence of medical approval before the Caesarean section is carried out, it is hoped that it will also be able to provide legal protection to patients and doctors both preventively and repressively.

Abstrak
Beberapa tahun belakangan ini, tindakan Operasi Caesar tanpa indikasi medis seolah menjadi sebuah trend tindakan medis yang terjadi didalam masyarakat. Abstract:
Julius Caesar’s military achievements, described in his Gallic War, are monumental; so are the atrocities his army committed in slaughtering or enslaving entire nations. He stands accused of genocide. For today’s readers, including students and teachers, this poses problems. It raises questions, not least about Caesar’s place in the Latin curriculum. Applying modern definitions of “genocide,” is he guilty as accused? If so, is it justified to condemn him of a crime that was recognized as such only recently? Without condoning Caesar’s actions, this paper seeks fuller understanding by contextual analysis, placing them in the context of Roman—and ancient (if not almost universal)—customs of imperial warfare. It emphasizes the complexity of historical persons and events, juxtaposing Caesar the brutal conqueror to Caesar the clement victor, who established clemency among a ruler’s cardinal virtues.

Abstract:
In 47 B.C., despite victory at the Battle of Pharsalus and the subsequent death of Cn. Pompeius Magnus, the Civil War continued for C. Julius Caesar. He faced hostile Roman armies in Spain and North Africa. Rumours circulated that the African army was preparing to invade Italy. Order was kept in Rome only through the force employed by Caesar's lieutenant M. Antonius. Contemporaries certainly did not believe Caesar's victory was a foregone conclusion. In the midst of these crises, Caesar faced a mutiny amongst his veteran Gallic legions billeted in Campania. These troops refused his orders to move from Italy to Africa to fight the Pompeian army that had gathered there. Instead they marched to Rome to demand back pay, discharge, and promised bonuses of money and land. Caesar's power, and his very survival, were hanging in the balance.

POLITICAL AND SOCIAL ORGANISATION OF GAULS IN THE LIGHT OF CAESAR’S ‘DE BELLO GALLICO’Summary Caesar’s De bello Gallico is currently the only source of our knowledge about ancient Celtic law. Careful reading of Caesar’s work let modern scholars to describe some general principles of Celtic legal order. It is, however, important to remember that De bello Gallico was not a legal treaty and was not written by a lawyer. Additionally it can be assumed that Caesar used his work as a tool of political propaganda. All those circumstances encumber a precise analysis of Gallic law. The most specific information about Gallic law described in De bello Gallico concerns political organization of Gauls and their society. Caesar wrote about general assembly of all Gallic tribes, general assembly of the druids, some local assemblies and tribal officials. He wrote also quite extensively about private law e.g. about segregation of the society (druids, aristocracy, commoners, slaves), clients, family relations.

On the Ides of March, 44 BC, in the Senate House of Pompey in Rome, Julius Caesar was assassinated by conspirators, the most famous of those being Brutus. Are there objectively valid reasons to confirm the possibility of a suicidal wish on the part of Caesar raised by Suetonius? By building and solving a two-player non-cooperative game that models the historical strategic aspects of the relationship between Caesar and Brutus, our article shows that there is no need to subscribe to the suicide thesis to explain Caesar’s death. We formulate our conclusion via the solution concept of mixed-strategy Nash equilibrium.

Abstract:
After long neglect, in English-language scholarship at least, the question of how Julius Caesar wrote and disseminated his Gallic War—as a single work? in multi-year chunks? year by year?—was revived by T.P. Wiseman in 1998, who argued anew for serial composition. This paper endeavours to provide further evidence for that conclusion by examining how Caesar depicts the non-Roman peoples he fights. Caesar's ethnographic passages, and their authorship, have been a point of contention among German scholars for over a century, but reading them and the rest of the text with eyes unclouded by the exhausted debate about possible interpolation reveals details that bear upon wider questions of composition. In these passages Caesar devised an ethnographic framework in order to rank against one another the levels of threat posed by different barbarian peoples, downplaying the relative ferocity of the Gauls in contrast to other groups in an effort to magnify the peril the others posed to Rome and the glory to be obtained from their defeat. This ethnographic framework is significant for understanding Caesar's method both because it provides insight into Caesar's reasons for including the ethnographic passages and because it implies that the Gallic War was composed in, at a minimum, four stages: Books 1–2, where the framework is first developed and used, by 56 b.c.; Books 3–4 and 5–6, where it is elaborated and extended, by 54 and 52 b.c. respectively; and finally Book 7, after 52 b.c., when Caesar, in recounting the campaign against Vercingetorix, was forced to abandon and contradict the ethnographic framework in a fashion that suggests that the earlier books were already in circulation, preventing him from adjusting them to the new circumstances of the campaign of that year.

Abstract:
This paper contains a typological comparison of the extant accounts of Caesar's crossing of the Rubicon (Velleius Paterculus, Lucan, Plutarch, Suetonius, Appian, Orosius) and highlights interrelationships among the various accounts as well as patterns and topoi in the Rubicon myth. This episode has been dramatized by five of the authors as a point of transition from peace to war, although Caesar has set himself at fault much earlier by maneuvering to resign his command. Common motifs are the speed with which Caesar proceeds, his hesitation and pondering the consequences, and the connection of the crossing with a supernatural element. Caesar's nocturnal wanderings in Suetonius can be explained as a misinterpretation of Plutarch's account; the scene about the apparition with the reed pipe plays with generic markers to express the beginning of war. Finally, a conclusion can be drawn about Asinius Pollio as the common source. As a child of the Late Republic he might have been interested in mitigating his representation of the Rubicon scene by having Caesar hesitate, ponder the consequences, be under divine influence and act in self-defense, features that were exploited by his successors and turned into topoi of the Rubicon myth.

Early distribution of breast milk is an important requirement in supporting exclusive breastfeeding. Early distribution of breast milk in post sectio caesarea mothers is slower than normal post partum. This study aimed to determine the influence of breastfeeding position, pain, mobilization, rooming in, and rolling massage on the early breastmilk distribution on mothers post sectio caesaria. This study used cross sectional approach. Population of this study was mother post sectio caesarea. The research sample consisted of 90 people. The results showed there relationship between rooming in, mobilization, pain, positions breastfeeding and rolling massage with speed of time of early breastmilk distribution on mothers post sectio caesarea (p value= 0.000). Breastfeeding with position right, mild pain, active mobilization, continuous rooming-in, and rolling massage intervention 12 hours post sectio caesarea are determining factors in the speed of time of early breastmilk distribution on mothers post sectio caesarea. AbstractCaesar’s speech Pro Bithynis is usually considered to be an expression of the positive relationships between Caesar and the Kingdom of Bithynia. The context in which the speech was delivered is, however, unclear.By means of a lexical analysis of the two extant fragments of the Pro Bithynis, this paper aims at providing a new interpretation of the speech and its historical background. Caesar probably delivered the speech not immediately after King Nicomedes’s death – as commonly accepted – but after the Roman siege of Heraclea Pontica, when the proconsul M. Aurelius Cotta, Caesar’s propinquus, was accused of having sacked the city.As had already happened in Macedonia (thanks to Dolabella’s prosecution) and in Greece (Caesar represented some Greeks in a process against C. Antonius around 79 BC), the Bithynian affair represented a further occasion for Caesar to win over friends and allies among foreign communities.

In September 46bc, Cicero delivered a speech in the Senate, praising the dictator Caesar for the clemency and wisdom he had shown in pardoning M. Marcellus. The forgiveness of a man who had been, in Caesar's own words, characterized by particularacerbitasseemed all the more magnanimous, and Cicero recalls the occasion in a letter sent to his friend, S. The words he delivered apparently extempore were later written down and published, probably quite soon after the event of their delivery. It used quasi experimental method with pre test and post test design, in 74 population of pre surgery section cesarean, with purposive sampling technique. Obtained results, effective relaxation decreases anxiety of patients with cesarean section surgery with significance (p=0.000). Similarly, effective music therapy decreased anxiety with significance (p=0.000), so there was no difference in decreased anxiety after giving deep breathing relaxation technique and music therapy with significance (p=0.317). Concluded that deep breathing relaxation and music therapy alike can decreaseanxiety of patients undergoing cesarean section surgery but there was no difference in decreased anxiety after giving deep breathing relaxation techniques and music therapy.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Descriptions of battles in ancient authors are not mirrors of reality, however dim and badly cracked, but are a form of literary production in which the real events depicted are filtered through the literary, intellectual, and cultural assumptions of the author. By comparing the battle descriptions of Julius Caesar to those of Xenophon and Polybius this paper attempts to place those battle descriptions in their intellectual and cultural context. Here Caesar appears as a military intellectual engaged in controversies with experts in the Greek tradition of military theory-rejecting materialist strains of Greek thinking-and also as a Roman soldier whose military experience and cultural conceptions about how battles work could not be fully accommodated by Greek models. Caesar adapts from the Greeks an intellectual model of tactics based on physical metaphors, but adjusts Greek theory to Roman experience: Caesar's tactical physics ramifies from the crash-impetus-of the legionary charge rather than the push of the phalanx. Caesar also adapts from the Greeks a simplifying model of military psychology, adjusting a Greek binary scheme of morale into a three-level model to accommodate a Roman military ethos of steadiness in combat. Greek military thinking downplayed the role in battle of innate differences in courage between armies or nations, concentrating instead on tactics and stratagems; Roman culture encouraged Caesar to reject this dismissive view and elaborate a detailed understanding of the role of courage-virtus-in the mechanics of battle. The prominence of virtus in Caesar's battle descriptions illustrates its survival as an important Roman cultural norm and tempts speculation as to its historical consequences. Attempts to reconstruct ancient battles must take into account the cultural and intellectual traditions which guide ancient battle descriptions.
