Abstract:
The missionary upsurge of the mid-nineteenth century resulted in the establishment of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria (PCN) in 1846. The mission was undertaken through the sponsorship of the United Secession Church and later the United Presbyterian Church (UPC), which subsequently became part of the United Free Church of Scotland. In 1876, the ‘white African mother’ and ‘Queen’ of Calabar, Mary Slessor, arrived in Calabar as a missionary of the UPC. She served for thirty-nine years, died and was buried in Calabar. This paper presents a contextual background for understanding the missionary work of Miss Slessor. It critically surveys some of her legacies within Nigeria, and demonstrates how contemporary PCN and Nigerians are appropriating them. The paper further analyses the state of contemporary Nigerian-Scottish partnership and argues for new patterns of relationship between Nigeria and Scotland which draw on the model of Miss Slessor.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: X-ray and sonomammography constitute a significant option in the early detection and management of breast diseases in the developed world. Unfortunately these modalities became available in Nigeria, only in the past few decades.AIM: The aim of this audit is therefore to document the imaging findings, in the past three years in a developing facility in Nigeria relating them with the demograghic features.METHODS: We prospectively studied the x-ray and sonomammography in all patients, presenting over a three year period, for breast evaluation with the hope of discerning the epidemiologic pattern of breast lesions in this environment.RESULTS: One hundred and forty-five females and four males. Median was 38 years (IQR=30-48). The commonest reason for evaluation was screening. Patients that were below 38 years showed no significant difference in frequency and type of lesion compared with patients over 38 years. The commonest breast pattern was fatty replaced. The upper outer quadrant was the commonest site.CONCLUSION: Patients presenting for breast evaluation in Calabar do so for screening mainly. Patients below 38 are nearly equally affected by malignant breast disease as their older counterparts. The commonest breast pattern was fatty replaced. Digital mammography should be available in all tertiary institutions.

Abstract:
This research investigated the effect of self-determination theory (SDT) elements on the retention of nurses at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) in Calabar, Nigeria. The primary focus was to analyze how SDT components like autonomy, competence, and relatedness influence nurse retention at UCTH. Utilizing a cross-sectional research design, the study collected primary data via structured questionnaires from 206 general nurses at UCTH. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data, and multiple regression was employed to test the hypotheses. The results indicated that SDT factors—autonomy, competence, and relatedness—had significant positive effects on nurse retention at UCTH. These results underscore the critical importance of nurturing self-determination motivation elements in public hospitals like UCTH to improve nurse retention. Therefore, the study advised that public hospital managers in Nigeria should establish a supportive work environment that promotes nurses' independence in patient care and evaluation. It is also essential to prioritize continuous training and skill enhancement to elevate technical proficiency and the quality of patient care. Furthermore, fostering a culture of social interaction and professional relationships among staff is key to boosting nurses' sense of belonging and worth in the workplace. The study also highlighted the need for extensive research to gain a deeper understanding of the link between SDT factors and employee retention in Nigerian healthcare. Future research should encompass other healthcare professionals in addition to nurses to offer comprehensive insights for effective retention strategies in the Nigerian public health sector.

Abstract:
Drug abuse problems in recent times have become an issue of grave concern and worrisome globally, with similar consequences for society. The paper emphasized the role of architecture in facilitating a therapeutic process for drug addicts in rehabilitation centre design as one of the solutions to this problem. Architectural spaces undoubtedly affect and influence the actions and attitudes of users. The study aims to integrate therapeutic techniques in rehabilitation centre design with enhanced spatial efficiency for holistic patient treatment to integrate them back into society. The methodology of the study is both theoretical and practical, involving a literature review, appraisal of case studies; observations, use of interviews and architectural design principles to formulate and produce a design model for a rehab centre in Calabar, Nigeria. Findings revealed that there are no known well-designed centres to rehabilitate victims of drug addiction in Calabar, Nigeria. The few centres available function as detention and discriminating spaces. The study concludes that rehab centres that focus on the therapeutic healing principles approach, which deals with patients’ mental, psychological, social and spiritual needs, should be developed in Calabar and other cities in Nigeria for swift rehabilitation of addicts.

Abstract:
This paper examines the phenomenon of Skolombo in Calabar (Nigeria) in relation to the challenge of urban subalternism in that context. This is against the backdrop of the evolution of the Skolombo into a rising urban subaltern category involved in the underworld and ant-social activities. By means of exploratory and conversational discourse that relies on extant literature as well as insights from personal communications, the paper posits that Skolombo phenomenon represents an existential struggle by abandoned and rejected street children who are surviving against structural societal victimization. Away from home, these children have found the streets, not only an inevitable abode but also a space for opportunistic survival. Over the years, they have evolved a pattern of street living characterized, among other things, by restiveness, touting, gangsterism, and criminality. Associated with this pattern of existence is an emerging subaltern identity that highlights a crisis of urbanity in Calabar metropolis of Nigeria. Keywords: Calabar, Skolombo, street living, subaltern identity, urban criminality, urban subalternism

Abstract:

The study is aimed at examining the vulnerability of some residential neighbourhoods in Calabar to the menace of flooding with a view to determining residential areas of high, medium and low flood risk. Two hypotheses were formulated such as: there is no significant relationship between the magnitude of flood, and the vulnerability of residential neighbourhoods and the elements-at-risk to flood in residential neighbourhoods in Calabar do not vary significantly according to the topography of the area. The major primary data were obtained from the metric measurement of the coverage of flood and the assessment of the numerical value of the residential buildings considered vulnerable to flood within the areas measured. Secondary data were also obtained from the collection of both published and unpublished materials and data on flooded buildings and displaced persons were also obtained from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Calabar. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and hypotheses tested using the regression coefficient of the least square method and scatter grams for prediction. The results of the hypotheses were found to be significant as the magnitude of flood determined the vulnerability of some residential neighbourhoods. Vulnerability was found to be higher in low lying residential neighbourhoods. The study, however, recommends among others, planned and autonomous adaptation responses, flood plain zoning to urban agriculture, landscaping and recreational uses. Proper channelization of Calabar urban drainage system, stringent flood control legislation, and development control measures should be enforced so as to discourage people from building on or near flood-prone areas of Calabar.

Abstract:
The study analysed the practice of diabetic self care among diabetic farmers in University of Calabar Teaching Hospital Calabar, Nigeria. One hundred and twenty (120) respondents were selected through a multi-stage sampling procedure from diabetic rural farmers attending diabetic clinic in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation and chi-square test respectively. The study revealed that a good proportion (52.5%) of the respondents were males while 47.5% were females. The study revealed through a check list that majority (75.00%) had regular blood glucose check, 70.00 percent had contact with health care providers whenever infections occurred, while 60.83 percent had their meal plan regularly. Constraints affecting diabetic self care practice include lack of technical knowhow on the practice of self care, negative attitude towards diabetes and poor communication between agricultural extension workers, health extension workers and the rural farmers in the study area. The chi square test indicated that, there was no significant relationship between level of education and practice of self-care among diabetic rural farmers in the study area at 5% level of significance with an X2 value of 5.99. The study calls for greater synergy between rural farmers, agricultural extension agents, health workers and diabetic clinics in the study area. This will bring hope and courage to diabetic rural farmers in the study area. How to Cite: John B. Effion, Imaobong O. Enenyi, 2023. Abstract:
Electricity generation in rural communities is an acute problem militating against socioeconomic well-being of the populace in these communities in developing countries, including Nigeria. In this paper, assessments of wind-energy potential in selected sites from three major geopolitical zones of Nigeria were investigated. For this, daily wind-speed data from Katsina in northern, Warri in southwestern and Calabar in southeastern Nigeria were analysed using the Gumbel and the Weibull probability distributions for assessing wind-energy potential as a renewable/sustainable solution for the country’s rural-electrification problems. Results showed that the wind-speed models identified Katsina with higher wind-speed class than both Warri and Calabar that were otherwise identified as low wind-speed sites. However, econometrics of electricity power simulation at different hub heights of low wind-speed turbine systems showed that the cost of electric-power generation in the three study sites was converging to affordable cost per kWh of electric energy from the wind resource at each site. These power simulations identified cost/kWh of electricity generation at Kaduna as €0.0507, at Warri as €0.0774, and at Calabar as €0.0819. These bare positive implications on renewable/sustainable rural electrification in the study sites even as requisite options for promoting utilization of this viable wind-resource energy in the remote communities in the environs of the study sites were suggested.
