Clair Groups and underlying basement contain cataclastic faults, cement-sealed faults/veins and open fractures. The dominant fracture cements are calcite and pyrite, although fluorite (with sulphides and native silver) occurs in minor amounts in some Clair Group fractures, marcasite is often associated with Clair Group fracture-hosted pyrite, and some basement fractures contain epidote/chlorite and quartz/feldspar/hematite. This study investigates the ecology of an arid zone calcrete through an interdisciplinary design composed of multivariate analyses, hydrology, isotopic ecology and genetics. Our results indicate that the biotic community (microbes and stygofauna) is closely linked to the hydrodynamic conditions influenced by different rainfall regimes. The inflow of rainfall triggered shifts towards more deterministic dynamics, revealing a complex web of interactions. This investigation provides crucial untangling of the ecological dynamics regulating biotic communities in groundwaters.

The Langer Heinrich calcrete hosted uranium deposit is situated approximately 90 km to east of the coastal town of Swakopmund in Namibia. It is run by an Australian owned company, Paladin Energy Limited, along with China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) who maintain 25% of the shares. Production commenced in 2007 and has been ongoing. Carnotite is the primary and only ore mineral, and the nature of mineralisation within the Langer Heinrich palaeo channel dictates westward-directed continuous open pit mining. This thesis describes the geochemistry from carbonate rocks and biogeochemistry from mallee across the Yorke Peninsula to better characterise and define mineral systems that may occur in IOCG prospective basement rocks masked by various overlying cover sequences. Presented here is geochemical data from three cliff escarpments (vertical geochemical profiles) which preserve cover sequences overlying basement rocks. The seed bank dynamics of five habitats as well as a grazing gradient in the southwestern Kalahari, South Africa were studied. Soil samples were collected in the following habitats: dune crests, dune slopes, dune streets, a calcrete outcrop and a riverbed on the farm Alpha.
