Global definitions in terms of event horizons and Killing horizons are contrasted with local definitions in terms of trapping horizons and dynamical horizons. Two proposals which attempt to explain the origin of black hole entropy (the brick wall model and entanglement entropy) are then discussed. The spin is a fundamental characteristic of a black hole, but unlike mass it leaves a mark on space-time only very close to the event horizon, and is therefore more difficult to measure. The observational relevance of the spin comes from the fact that it sets the size scale of the last stable orbit around the accreting black hole, dragging the accretion disc farther in the faster it spins. Nonetheless, the only way to justify one's claim about the statistical origin of black hole entropy is to compute it statistically. This is the motivation for the construction of black hole models.
