In this work, external PIXE was applied for the analysis of ancient silver and bronze coins. Turkish and Romanian silver coins, Roman and Byzantine bronze coins were investigated using a 3 MeV proton beam. To evaluate the in-depth distribution of major and minor elements ( Cu , Ag , Au , Pb for silver matrix and Cu , Zn , Ag , Sn , Pb for copper matrix), the coins were polished using silicon carbide abrasives. In order to test the homogeneity of the coins, measurements were carried out at three different impact points. Each position of the samples was carefully controlled in order to avoid dif

A method for calculating the total weight of the silver coins in the hoards, and thus the weight relationship between minted and un-minted silver, would facilitate further and deeper studies using the hoards from Gotland. The method will be based on the average coin weights obtained from numismatic sources. Two calculations, one of Arabic coins and another with mixed coin, is attempted. The Viking Age (800–1050 A.D.) is also called the “Silver Age”. Despite the fact that no silver mines were in use in Sweden at that time, most of the landowners for one reason or another had a lot of precious metal stored in their homes. Alone the Island of Gotland has found over 700 different hoards of which around 400 of these hoards have been excavated over the last 100 years. Abstract:
With this chapter, the book moves to consider the role of precious metals within non-monetary economies. It compares attitudes to wealth in Scandinavia before and after the widespread adoption of Christianity, and argues that new Christian doctrines encouraged coin use within an ‘economy of salvation’. Harnessing archaeological evidence of coins found beneath the floorboards of Scandinavian churches, the chapter argues that Christian parishioners made regular offerings of low-denomination coins in exchange for salvation. Dating evidence suggests that this practice began in the late eleventh century, but expanded during the twelfth, and thus occured against a backdrop of wider societal monetization; indeed, devotional offerings of coins were one means for the church to raise revenues. This process reveals how the meaning and function of coins were transformed as they moved from the profane to ritual spheres.

Early forms of money included agricultural commodities and metals, such as silver bullion and barley in Mesopotamia or gold, silver, and bronze in Egypt. The fungibility of metals made them particularly useful. Aristotle provides one view of how barter gave way to coined money, but this question remains contentious. The first coins appeared in Lydia near the end of the seventh century BC, but the spread of this monetary revolution owed much to the neighboring Greeks. Mints in many Greek poleis issued coins that not only served economic needs, but also functioned as state-sponsored advertising, art, and propaganda. The Romans and others followed suit, while independent coinage traditions emerged in China and India.
