Abstract:
Abstract Miticides were applied as foliar sprays on .01 acre plots of established alfalfa in a field with heavy mite populations near Caldwell, ID. Treatments were arranged in randomized complete block design with 3 replicates. Sprays were applied on Jul 24 and 31 Jul, 1984 with a CO2 backpack sprayer using 50 gal water/acre. Mite counts were made by randomly picking ten 3-leal samples per replicate. Leaves were brushed through a brushing machine and mites and eggs were counted under a dissecting microscope.

Abstract:
Abstract ‘Russet Burbank’ potatoes were planted 17-18 Apr at the University of Idaho, Research and Extension Center, Caldwell, Idaho, in Vickery-Marsing silt loam. Treatments were applied to 2-row plots, 20 ft long, separated by 3 ft borders of ‘Red Pontiac’ potatoes in a randomized complete block design with 6 replications. Eleven insecticides were used at various chemical/rate combinations to give 30 treatments plus an untreated check. All treatments were applied at planting either in-furrow (IFAP), broadcast (BDCST), broadcast in a 10 inch band (10” band), or pre-plant surface spray. Capture was applied as a pre-plant spray using a CO2 pressurized hand-sprayer at 35-40 psi delivering ca. 40 gal water/acre. Those chemicals applied broadcast or in a 10 inch band were applied by hand, then soil incorporated. Counts for aphids and the CPB were made weekly by examining 10 leaves/plot.

Abstract:
Abstract ‘Twin’ wheat was planted on 26 Apr, at the University of Idaho Research and Extension Center at Caldwell, ID, in a furrow irrigated field. Plots were 30-ft half circles centered on sprinkler heads applying ca. 3.47 gal water/minute. Injection time was 10 min with a clearing time of ca. 20 min from Rep 1 to Rep 3. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Aphids were allowed to infest and multiply naturally, then sampled by examining 20 tillers taken at random through the plot. Injection date was 10 Jul. Counts were made on 12 and 16 Jul. Yields were taken by cutting and weighing 200 heads/plot at harvest.

Abstract:
Abstract Potatoes were planted 1 May ’84 in Purdam silt loam at the University of Idaho, Research and Extension Center, Caldwell, ID. The plots were 80-ft diam circles (0.1 acre) spaced 80 ft apart. Four treatments were replicated 4 times in a complete randomized block design. Three inch hook-and-latch pipe with 6-1/8 inch nozzles were used in 3 positions on the field. Treatments were applied with a MAZZEI® injector for 20 min. Water was applied at the rate of 0.2 inch/h with a 7 h.p. pump. Insect populations were sampled pre-treatment and 1, 3, 7 days posttreatment by counting live aphids per 25 leaves.

Abstract Potatoes were planted 1 May in Purdam silt loam at the University of Idaho, Research & Extension Center, Caldwell, ID. The plots were 2 contiguous 80-ft diameter circles (0.2 acre). Five treatments were replicated 4 times in a complete randomized block design. Three inch hook-and-latch pipe with 1/8 inch nozzles were solid-set in a 4-line design. Injection time was 20 min. Water was applied at the rate of 0.2 inch/h with a PTO-driven pump. Abstract ‘Twin’ wheat was planted 26 Apr. at the University of Idaho Research and Extension Center, Caldwell, ID, in a furrow-irrigated field. Plots were 5 ft wide by 20 ft long and each bordered by a 3-ft buffer strip. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with 5 replications. Sprays were applied with a CO2 pressurized sprayer at 35 psi delivering 40 gal water/acre. Early sprays (2-4 aphids/tiller) were applied 27 Jun. Late milk and dough-stage sprays were applied on 9 and 12 Jul respectively. All other sprays were applied on 3 Jul. Aphids were sampled by examining 10 tillers taken at random through the length of the plot. Plots were counted on 4, 8, 16, and 23 Jul. Plots were harvested and yield taken 27 Aug.

Abstract:
Abstract Experimental plots were established in a potato field on the University of Idaho Research and Extension Center, Caldwell. The soil type was Portneuf silt loam and irrigation was by surface flow. Thirteen treatments and an untreated control were replicated 4 times in a randomized complete block design. Individual treatment plots were 4 rows (36-inch row spacing) wide by 25 ft long. Applications were made as a broadcast spray using a CO2-pressurized backpack sprayer. Each acre received 20 gal finished spray at 30 psi from X-8 (Spraying Systems) hollow-cone nozzles. A spreader-sticker (B-1956, Rohm and Haas, 0.25% vol/vol) was added to the 3 applications of RH-5849. Adult and larval CPB were counted by recording the number of each stage observed infesting the middle 2 rows of each plot as the observer walked between those rows. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Newman-Keuls studentized range test.
