Abstract:

Ne dans le sud des etats-unis en 1903, erskine caldwell est mort il y a un peu moins de neuf ans. Son oeuvre, immense, comporte une bonne trentaine de romans, autour de cent cinquante nouvelles, des livres pour enfants, des ecrits journalistiques et des documentaires. Le present travail traite de la vision sociale d'un auteur prolifique et longtemps neglige par la critique dite "serieuse". Par vision sociale nous entendons le regard et la prise de position qu'a erskine caldwell au sujet de son sud natal tels qu'ils apparaissent a travers son oeuvre. La lecture de cette derniere nous a permis de degager trois themes majeurs: la representation de la pauvrete, la representation de la religion, et celle du racisme. Le traitement de ces themes montre qu'erskine caldwellconscient du lien etroit entre ecriture, histoire, politique, et societe- est tres critique vis-a-vis d'une region qu'il connait intimement et ou il a situe les intrigues d'une grande partie de son oeuvre. Loin d'etre le champion d'une cause ou le partisan d'un systeme politique, erskine caldwell est, comme le montre notre lecture de ses ecrits, surtout un romancier et un conteur. Sa denonciation de l'injustice, du determinisme social, et de l'intolerance religieuse et raciale ne doit pas occulter cette realite
Erskine caldwell was born in 1903 in georgia (u. S. A) and he died in 1986 in paradise valley: arizona. A prolific and gifted story-teller, caldwell is the author of some thirty novels, around a hundred and fifty short stories, a few children books, and many journalistic and documentary works. Our study of caldwell's social vision shows that the author's writing deals almost exclusively with the south of the united states. Yet, caldwell's depiction of his native land is rather critical. His criticism of the south- a criticism motivated by his honest concern with the well-being of his black and white follew contrymen and women, can be felt through his handling of three major themes: the treatment of poverty, the treatment of religious fundamentalism, and that of racial intolerance. Far from being a reformist or a theoretician of social revolt, caldwell is mainly a fiction writer and and a story-teller

Abstract:

This study aims to clarify the nature of the theatrical way of Henry Caldwell Cook who was the first to introduce theatre into education for English as a first language. This study critically examines the content of his original teaching method, Play Way, and attempts to appropriately place its context in the history of drama education in England in order to explore how effectively drama can be used in language education. The use of theatre for education has a long history. Commencing in ancient Greece and Rome, it has continued until the present time. However, modern drama education has no more than about a hundred years of history. It was Cook and Harriet Finlay-Johnson who opened the history of this theatrical education. Finlay-Johnson had persistently used theatre to teach all subjects, mainly because of her educational stance as an elementary school teacher. She is closely associated with the leaders of DIE (Drama-in-Education) who adhere to the same educational policy. While Cook also used theatre as a means for language education and did his best to maintain a theatrical framework, there is a fundamental difference between Cook's educational method and that of DIE. His Play Way seems to closely resemble TIE (Theatre-in-Education) in that both bring in theatre for school education. However, this similarity is superficial. In the TIE method, while the autonomy of theatre has always been maintained, theatre in Cook's method was used as a means for education to the end, although concurrently he had been able to properly grasp the nature of theatre. Behind such a view of theatre as an educational end in itself is Cook's recognition of the theatricality of human beings. His theatrical teaching tells us that when using theatre as a tool for language education, we must first correctly understand its intrinsic qualities.

Abstract:

Erskine Caldwell and Margaret Bourke-White traveled to the U.S.S.R. in 1941 on their and their editor's hunch that something newsworthy was in the offing. The couple went in part to add to their library of phototext books (three had been published since 1936), but more to advance the agenda of the anti-Fascist, anti-isolationist Leftist Popular Front, whose goals coincided with those of the Roosevelt administration. When Germany invaded the Soviet Union on June 22, they immediately immersed themselves in the enterprise of bringing war news to the American listening and reading public. Through the portals of CBS radio, Life magazine, PM newspaper, and other journalistic outlets, and despite stultifying censorship, they made it clear that the Red Army was a formidable anti-Hitler force that wanted only financial and material assistance from the U.S., and that the Russian people, steeped in patriotism and family values not very different from American ideals, were worthy allies. Stalin, they hinted, was a well-intentioned and well-organized autocrat, but nothing worse. Upon returning to the United States, Bourke-White traveled extensively to promote a Russian-American alliance, and published a photo-chronicle of their Russian trip, Shooting the Russian War. Caldwell published two very different books, All-Out on the Road to Smolensk and All Night Long, that also advocated this coalition. I argue that Caldwell composed Smolensk as a heroic quest to report on the war firsthand, while All Night Long, a popular and sensational story about Russian guerillas, bears all the characteristics of a Socialist Realist novel touting the Soviet cause. Both books were successful in endorsing Soviet objectives in the West. Their individual and collaborative literary products have been largely forgotten, but Bourke-White's photographs continue to inform our memory of that war.

Simple avatar de la pensee antifederaliste ou resultat de l'affrontement de deux conceptions divergentes de la souverainete des etats ou meme de deux conceptions antagonistes de la souverainete populaire? il nous semble qu'une meilleure apprehension de la signification de la doctrine que concut calhoun en 1828 dans la "south carolina exposition", rapport que publia la legislature de cet etat pourdenoncer l'inconstitutionnalite de la politique protectionniste, ne peut se faire sans que la nature de la crise a laquelle elle est associee : la crise de l'annulation, ne soit elle-meme determinee. Posant en prealable que cette crise fut une crise de legitimation nee de la tension qu'engendra la perception d'une destabilisation de la relation qui liait les trois sections au gouvernement federalet d'une menace reelle pour le maintien d'une institution jugee vitale pour la societe sudiste, nous soutenons que la theorie de l'annulation fut une tentative par laquelle calhoun chercha a substituer au cadre conceptuel existant - qui avait permis d'affirmer la constitutionnalite de la politique protectionniste - un autre juge plus conforme aux realites de l'union - une grande republique aux interets heterogenes - et aux principes etablis par les peres fondateurs. Tirant sa source des diverses ideologies qui sous-tendent le republicanisme americain et ayant pour but de proteger les interets minoritaires, la theorie du veto d' etat ne trouva toutefois grace qu'aux yeux des caroliniens en raison du particularisme de leur etat. Le « poor white trash » est celui que chacun connaît aux Etats-Unis mais dont il est convenu de taire le nom. Objet de stigmatisation sociale, symbolisant la dégradation physique, la vilénie morale et l’infamie historique, il est aussi un hybride racial, à la marge de la « normalité blanche ». L’extravagance de ce misérable -de sa langue, de ses manières et de son corps- doit être tenue à l’écart, à juste distance afin d’être spatialement reléguée, mais aussi de demeurer à portée de regard. Ce travail étudie la construction littéraire de ce personnage à travers les œuvres de Sherwood Anderson, Erskine Caldwell, Harper Lee, Breece DJ Pancake, Russell Banks, Dorothy Allison et les chansons du rappeur Eminem. A la lumière des textes de ces auteurs, et dans une perspective pluridisciplinaire, nous tentons d’observer les métamorphoses et les permanences de l’écriture d’un personnage ambigu, à la fois mythe littéraire et social, et tabou linguistique dont l’existence dépend exclusivement de l’œil qui l’envisage
The « poor white trash » is, in the United States, the one everyone knows but whose name should remain untold. Socially stigmatized, symbolizing physical decay, moral vice and historical infamy, he is, as well, a racial hybrid, at the margin of “white normalcy”. The extravagance of this miserable character – of his language, his manners, and his body – must be kept at safe distance in order to be spatially relegated but also to remain observable. We study in this work the literary elaboration of this character through the writings of Sherwood Anderson, Erskine Caldwell, Harper Lee, Breece DJ Pancake, Russell Banks, Dorothy Allison and the songs of the rapper Eminem. From those perspectives, and in a pluri-disciplinary approach, we attempt to shed some light on the metamorphoses and the permanence of the ambiguous “poor white trash”, at the same time literary and social myth and linguistic taboo whose very existence depends exclusively on the eye that judges him

Abstract:

Le présent travail se donne pour objectif d’éclairer les liens entre l’œuvre narrative de Raymond QUENEAU et les récits anglo-saxons qu’il a lus et recensés de 1917 à 1938. Dans un premier temps, un classement raisonné à partir des listes de lectures queniennes nous a permis de délimiter une assemblée de dix auteurs, précurseurs ou emblèmes de la modernité en littérature, dont les écrits entrent en résonance précoce et prolongée avec les textes queniens (Edgar Allan POE, Lewis CARROLL, Joseph CONRAD, Henry JAMES, James JOYCE, William FAULKNER, Gertrude STEIN, Ernest HEMINGWAY, Henry MILLER, Erskine CALDWELL). L’établissement de ce socle empirique nous a permis, dans un second temps, de dépasser les filiations déjà amplement discutées par la critique et, grâce à une confrontation minutieuse des écritures, d’identifier des corrélations plus souterraines, parfois méconnues. C’est dans ce cadre que nous avons cherché à répondre à nos questions : comment QUENEAU inscrit-il sa singularité littéraire dans le terreau d’une poétique moderne qui déstabilise radicalement les composantes de la fiction classique en soupçonnant la viabilité d’une représentation signifiante ? Ou encore : comment QUENEAU, entouré de ses pairs anglo-saxons favoris, figure-t-il littérairement l’ontologie de l’inquiétude face à l’abolition possible du sens du monde et des êtres ?
This study aims at clarifying the connections between Raymond QUENEAU’s prose works and the narratives from the English-speaking world which he read and listed from 1917 to 1938. On the basis of a rational perusal of QUENEAU’s reading lists, we first delineated a group of ten writers who announce or epitomize literary modernity and whose writings reveal a concurrence, both precocious and lasting, with the French writer’s own texts (Edgar Allan POE, Lewis CARROLL, Joseph CONRAD, Henry JAMES, James JOYCE, William FAULKNER, Gertrude STEIN, Ernest HEMINGWAY, Henry MILLER, Erskine CALDWELL). This empirical foundation having been firmly established, we were then able to go beyond the links which have been widely discussed in current criticism and to identify less detectable and sometimes underrated relations. Within that framework we investigated several issues : how does QUENEAU express his literary originality against the background of modern poetics where the basic features of classical fiction are thoroughly undermined because of the doubt cast upon the validity of meaningful representation? Once seen in the company of his favourite English-speaking authors, how does Queneau use the art of writing to outline an ontology of anxiety when facing the possible annihilation of both mundane reality and beings?

Abstract:

The Leona aquifer is an important, but overlooked, water resource in Central Texas. The Quaternary Leona Formation occurs as several isolated alluvial deposits at the margins of the Edwards Plateau. Each of these deposits forms an aquifer. One of these aquifers is located near Lockhart, Texas. This aquifer is recharged by infiltration of precipitation and is discharged by numerous springs and seeps. Additional sources of discharge are evapotranspiration and cross-formational flow into the Wilcox aquifer. The saturated thickness at this location varies seasonally but is rarely greater than 3 m (10 ft). Groundwater flow in an aquifer of this scale is influenced by its heterogeneous nature. This research identified seven different facies in the Leona Formation and the underlying Wilcox Group. These divisions were based on sediment classification, lithology, and sedimentary structures. The Leona Formation is covered by sandy and silty clay soil and caliche. Each of these facies has different hydraulic properties. Many empirical relationships between grain size distribution and hydraulic conductivity (K) have been discussed in the literature. Equations developed by Hazen, Slichter, Terzaghi, Beyer, Saurbrei, and Kozeny were used to estimate hydraulic conductivity. Hydraulic conductivity was also measured in the laboratory with constant and falling head permeameters. Hydraulic conductivity of the Leona aquifer varies seven orders of magnitude. Hydraulic conductivity varies up to four orders of magnitude within a single facies due to small-scale differences in grain size distribution and degree of cementation. The arithmetic mean of hydraulic conductivity in vertical profiles through the Leona aquifer ranges from 0.013 cm/sec (37 ft/day) to 0.14 cm/sec (397 ft/day). Water quality is a concern for many unconfined shallow alluvial aquifers, including the Leona aquifer. Elevated nitrate levels indicate contamination resulting from agricultural land use. Nitrate concentration in the Leona aquifer ranges from 4 ppm nitrate as NO₃ to greater than 70 ppm nitrate as NO₃. These concentrations are significantly greater than those observed in the Wilcox aquifer. The U.S. Geologic Survey computer code MODFLOW was used to create a groundwater model of the Leona aquifer. In the best simulation, specific yield was 0.1 and horizontal hydraulic conductivity was 0.058 cm/sec (164 ft/day). The simulated hydraulic conductivity is an order of magnitude less than observed in gravel pit outcrops. Modeled recharge was 9 percent of annual precipitation in 2003 and 20 percent of precipitation in the first six months of 2004. Five hypothetical wells were placed in the model to examine the effects of pumping on the aquifer. Wells pumped for 61 days at 0.04 l/sec (0.6 gpm) cause insignificant drawdown while wells pumped at a rate of 3.5 l/sec (55 gpm) cause up to 0.55 m (1.8 ft) of drawdown. Natural drainage of the aquifer caused the water table to decline 0.8 m (2.6 ft) over this same period. MODPATH simulations using this groundwater model indicate an average residence time in the aquifer of 13 years and a maximum residence time of 70 years.

The literary study of realism in Southern Gothic is complicated and often contentious, and has led over time to a critical suppression of realistic genre forms. The purpose of the research in this dissertation is two-fold. The first objective is to explicate the critical construction of Realistic Southern Gothic literature as it has been formed in the American mainstream and the canon. The second objective is to develop a mixed methodological approach capable of examining the complex cross-disciplinary roots of the genre visible in relevant critical scholarship and popular discourse. A conceptual framework has been applied to analyse the broad aesthetic movements, institutional shifts, disciplinary migrations, and cultural undercurrents longitudinally impacting the mode. The innovative mixed methodology utilised in this dissertation integrates quantitative and qualitative approaches. One such innovation is the application of inductive mathematical visualisation to critical historiographical inspection of literary genre; visualisation is an alternative to standard quantitative methods in literary studies. The application of this methodology is explored through literary case studies, critical surveys, comparative analysis, the Google Books Ngram Viewer, and more. A full picture of the critical life of Realistic Southern Gothic literature is unearthed in this dissertation; exposing a complex and vital genre that is still practiced today, and is deeply engaged with the politics of Southern violence, crime narrative, cultural context, and identity.

A perda de dentes maxilares posteriores e a subsequente pneumatização do seio maxilar resultam em atrofia do osso alveolar e podem afetar a reabilitação adequada de pacientes com recurso a implantes osseointegrados. Neste contexto, as cirurgias convencionais de elevação do seio maxilar tem sido e são ainda consideradas uma modalidade de tratamento eficaz, embora com algumas taxas de complicações. As técnicas cirúrgicas hidrodinâmicas de elevação parecem ser uma alternativa de tratamento válida para tentar reduzir as complicações intra e pós-operatórias. Neste sentido, o SinusPhysiolift®, com um protocolo de aplicação simples, mesmo para cirurgiões menos experientes, é uma opção de tratamento promissora. Mais estudos clínicos são necessários para estabelecer as reais vantagens desta técnica.
Maxillary posterior teeth loss and subsequent maxillary sinus pneumatization results in atrophy of the alveolar bone and can affect the adequate rehabilitation of patients with osseointegrated implants. In this context, conventional maxillary sinus lift surgery has been considered an effective modality of treatment, although with some complication rates. Hydrodynamic surgical techniques of elevation seem to be a valid treatment alternative to try to reduce intra and postoperative complications. Hence, SinusPhysiolift®, with a simple application protocol, even for less experienced surgeons, is a promising treatment option. More clinical studies are needed to establish the real advantages of this technique.
