Abstract:

Displacement laser interferometer systems are widely used for the calibration of machine tools and CMMs (Coordinate Measuring Machines). Additionally, they are often the workhorse in dimensional calibration laboratories, where they act as the basic metrological traceability link for many calibrations. This paper gives a review of the calibration of such systems, where several approaches, such as the calibrations of separate components or the system as a whole, are reviewed. The calibrations discussed are: the laser frequency, the counting system, software evaluation of the environmental conditions, environmental and material temperature sensor calibration and the calibration of optics that is part of the system. For these calibrations considerations are given about the ways these can be carried out and about establishing the re-calibration intervals.

Abstract:

This paper details the development of an automated procedure to conduct calibrations of power supplies at Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology (JPL). The fundamentals of power supply calibrations are given, and discussion on the method by which this custom software handles that calibration. Additionally, this technique provides real time uncertainty quantification of the calibrations. This automated system has demonstrated a time savings over existing automated techniques in use today.

Abstract:

The Boeing Infrared Sensor (BIRS) Calibration Facility represents a major capital investment by The Boeing Company in optical and infrared technology. The facility was designed and built for calibrating and testing new generation large aperture long wave infrared (LWIR) sensors, seekers, and related technologies. The capability exists to perform both radiometric and goniometric calibrations of large infrared sensors under simulated environmental operating conditions. The system is presently configured for endoatmospheric calibrations with a uniform background field that can be set to simulate the expected mission background levels. During calibration, the sensor under test is also exposed to expected mission temperatures and pressures within the test chamber. The facility could be converted for exoatmospheric testing. The first major test runs in the facility were completed during 1989 with very satisfactory results. This paper will describe system configuration and hardware elements, and will address the modifications made to date. Pitt-Des Moines. Inc. (PDM) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was the contractor for the turnkey design and construction of the test chambers and thermal vacuum systems. Hughes Danbury Optical Systems (formerly Perkin Elmer Optical Systems) was the hardware supplier for the optical hardware. The Boeing Company performed all optical assembly, integration, testing, and alignment on-site.

The new Simrad scientific multibeam systems, the MS70 sonar and the ME70 echosounder, each transmit over many electronically formed beams with centre frequencies spanning from 70 to 120 kHz. Calibrations of these systems are therefore more complex than for conventional split-beam echosounder systems. Two large tungsten-carbide spheres (75 and 84 mm diameter) were designed and manufactured to facilitate accurate field calibrations over the entire operational bandwidth. These are heavy and therefore stable when suspended beneath a ship, and have target strengths much larger than those of biological targets potentially within the measurement volume. This paper presents procedures for calibrating each system in the field and the results from two such experiments. Detailed inspections of the results for individual beams indicate that minor adjustments in the described procedures might further improve the reported calibration accuracy.

AbstractTo exploit the high accuracy potential of laser ranging, suitable laser-altimeter calibration procedures combining laboratory and in-flight calibration steps are needed. Previous calibration schemes have limited the calibration process to flying over planar surfaces, and systematic errors remained in the system. In this paper we present a laser calibration algorithm that utilizes natural surfaces as calibration sites. This is especially important for calibrating systems in the interior of ice sheets. The proposed approach is demonstrated in calibrating the U.S. National Science Foundation Support Office for Aerogeophysical Research laser altimetry system. The results show a significant improvement in accuracy.

Abstract:

In structured light 3D vision measurement system, calibration tasks are key steps. Aiming at a special application of line structured light measurement, namely computer hard-disk surface planeness measurement at a precision equipment manufacturing company in Singapore, and combining with the structured light measurement model, determined three calibration tasks of the system. The three calibrating tasks concluded: calibrating the camera parameters; calibrating the light plane pose and calibrating the movement pose. At the same time, according to the three calibration results, measured the computer hard disk, and reconstructed the 3D model of the computer hard disk. The experimental results show that, the whole system of three calibration process is simple and reliable, the method does not need any auxiliary adjustment and realize the measurement accuracy about 0.023 mm. The work laid the better foundation for hard disk planeness vision measurement.

Borexino is a large liquid scintillator detector designed to study solar neutrinos in real-time. Since the beginning of data-taking in 2007, Borexino has been able to perform a complete spectroscopy of neutrinos from the Sun, thanks to its unprecedented radiopurity. Calibrations have been crucial for the success of the experiment. In this paper, we describe the Borexino calibration system, emphasizing its most critical aspects, in particular to those related to radiopurity. Aiming at the problem of calibrating the INS in non-laboratory conditions, this thesis proposes the calibration methods by as the core and combined use of double-position directional gyro calibration, four-position horizontal gyro calibration and Schuler circuit accelerometer calibration etc. It builds up the model for scale factor calibrating, controls the inertial platform by the embedded control technique to make it the three-axis turntable state, and uses the Linux OS and C language design control software to design and develop the automatic calibration equipment for the INS. This equipment is simple in operation, easy in use and portable, and therefore can realize automatic calibration in non-laboratory conditions. And the results meet the requirements for guarantee the precision of the system in use.

Binocular stereovision system is regularly only calibrated once, that is each camera is calibrated using a picture of the calibration pattern laid in the cross field. This methods calibration accuracy is expected to be improved. A twice calibrating method is proposed here. Each cameras extrinsic and intrinsic parameters are calibrated in different fields. The extrinsic parameters are firstly calibrated in the cross field, then the intrinsic parameters are calibrated in the close-range field. By applying the method to one binocular stereovision system built in our lab, it is demonstrated that the proposed method can improve the calibration accuracy more than 3.4dB than the once calibrating method. Its accuracy makes this novel method more suitable for high accurate target tracking application.

Properties such as high resolution, contactless (and thus wear-free) measurement, low power consumption, robustness against temperature and contamination as well as low cost make magnetic position and orientation systems appealing for a large number of industrial applications. Nevertheless, one major practical challenge is their sensitivity to fabrication tolerances. In this work, we propose a novel method for magnetic position system calibration based on the analytical computation of the magnetic field and on the application of an evolutionary optimization algorithm. This scheme enables the calibration of more than 10 degrees of freedom within a few seconds on standard quad-core ×86 processors, and is demonstrated by calibrating a highly cost-efficient 3D-printed 3-axis magnetic joystick.

Abstract:

This article describes calibration of control systems for downsized boosted engines. Model-based design of powertrain and aftertreatment control systems includes plant modeling and controller synthesis. The article illustrates the typical work flow of the model-based calibration process for an engine. In the process, the first step is the design of experiment. The experiment design should cover a multisurface space. That guides the next step to collect data from an engine or powertrain at critical operating points. Once the data are collected, an engine system model is built along with its designed controller models, then the operation of the control systems and controller parameters are optimized or calibrated based on the plant models. With these initial values of the calibrations handy, one can either download the calibration into the production ECU or use a rapid prototyping controller to conduct a full validation or final fine tuning of the engine powertrain control system in test cells or on vehicles.

Abstract:

The fisheye lens is a kind of ultra wide angle lens, which can produce a big super-wide-angle lens distortion. In order to cover a large scope of light, barrel distortion is artificially added to the optical system. However, in some cases this distortion is not allowed, then it requires calibrations of those distortions. Most of the traditional distortion calibration method uses target plane calibration to do it. This paper discusses the way of design fisheye lens, through which we can know the forming process of distortion clearly. Based on this paper, a simple and effective calibration method can be understood. Different from common camera calibration method, the proposed calibration method can avoid the error occurring in the process of calibrating test, that directly use the lens’ characteristic curve. Through multiple sets of experimental verifications, this method is effective and feasible.

Abstract:

Consumer-grade cameras are generally low-cost and available off-the-shelf, so having multicamera photogrammetric systems for 3D reconstruction is both financially feasible and practical. Such systems can be deployed in many different types of applications: infrastructure health monitoring, cultural heritage documentation, bio-medicine, as-built surveys, and indoor or outdoor mobile mapping for example. A geometric system calibration is usually necessary before a data acquisition mission in order for the results to have optimal accuracy. A typical system calibration must address the estimation of both the interior and the exterior, or relative, orientation parameters for each camera in the system. This article reviews different ways of performing a calibration of a photogrammetric system consisting of multiple cameras. It then proposes a methodology for the simultaneous estimation of both the interior and the relative orientation parameters which can work in several different types of scenarios including a multicamera multisystem calibration. A rigorous in situ system calibration was successfully implemented and tested. The same algorithm is able to handle the equivalent to a traditional-style bundle adjustment, that is, a network solution without constraints, for a single or multicamera calibrations, and the proposed bundle adjustment with built-in relative orientation constraints for the calibration of a system or multiple systems of cameras.

Abstract:

Methane monitoring and alarm system is very important because it guarantees the coal mine production safety. After analyzing impact factors on methane monitoring, this paper established a mathematical model of gas detection system and introduced the key technologies for maintenance-free is dynamic adjusting of system state, auto-zero, auto calibrations of nonlinear and post-processing of the data. The hardware architecture of the mini intelligent methane sensor based WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) and the automatic and visualized calibration technologies of intelligent methane detecting system are described in detail. Finally, the experimental data is analyzed. The system improved the detection accuracy, prolonged calibration cycle of the methane measuring device and lessened the working strength on calibration.

Abstract:

A new method for calibrating stereo vision measurement system is presented. By moving a rigid optical reference bar in a pattern in and around the measurement volume, the relative orientation and position of the two cameras can be determined by using the epipolar constraint, the linear normalization eight-point algorithm and the M-estimator method. The scale factor of the translation between the two cameras can be calculated by the distances between the marks on the reference bar. With automatically controlled infrared LED marks, the imaging feature points have a uniform intensity profile and a high contrast with background. The calibration accuracy can be improved. The simulation and experiments have shown that the calibration accuracy can be comparable with the complex off-line calibration.

Abstract:

Abstract. UAS imagery has become a widely used source of information in geomorphic research. When photogrammetric methods are applied to quantify geomorphic change, camera calibration is essential to ensure accuracy of the image measurements. Insufficient self-calibration based on survey data can induce systematic errors that can cause DEM deformations. The typically low geometric stability of consumer grade sensors necessitates in-situ calibration, as the reliability of a lab based calibration can be affected by transport. In this research a robust on-site workflow is proposed that allows the time-efficient and repeatable calibration of thermal and optical sensors at the same time. A stone building was utilised as calibration object with TLS scans for reference. The approach was applied to calculate eight separate camera calibrations using two sensors (DJI Phantom 4 Pro and Workswell WIRIS pro), two software solutions (Vision Measurement System (VMS) and Agisoft Metashape) and two different subsets of images per sensor. In practical application, some flowmeters are not allowed to be calibrated off-line periodically, thus on-line calibration is necessary to be implemented in workplace [1]. As a non-invasive flowmeter, the clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters are widely used in on-line calibration system. As a master flowmeter, ultrasonic flowmeters must be calibrated before or during using. Based on multiple fieldbus control system, an automatic calibration system for the ultrasonic flowmeter was designed. The comparison results between ultrasonic and electromagnetic flowmeter obtained during the process of calibrating manifest that the automatic calibration system is effective and reliable. Because of the good interoperability of the multiple fieldbus, other flowmeters with different protocols can be connected into this system easily. With the high speed development of fieldbus technology, this has great practical significance in flowmeter calibration.

Abstract:

Calibration of measuring instruments provides the confidence in measurements. It is the obligation of every laboratory to have its measuring equipment calibrated in regular intervals. This obligation means that the laboratory must send its equipment to the calibration laboratory every year or two depending on the calibration intervals. During this time the equipment is not available and this presents a financial burden to the laboratory of the customer. Since many of the modern instruments include some communication interfaces, it was made possible to create an Internet-enabled calibration system. This term encompasses a wide range of possible applications and services. The Internet-enabled calibrations must address several problems not present in standard calibrations, including security issues, since the equipment is not always under direct control of the calibration laboratory personnel who will sign the calibration certificate. As the traceability and integrity of the calibration process directly depends on the measured data, the reliable and secure remote control and monitoring of instruments must be a crucial aspect of Internet-enabled calibration technologies.

A method for the uncertainty estimation of probe calibrations using the power flux density (PFD) system of (18~26.5) GHz recently developed at the National Institute of Metrology, China is presented. A measurement model is developed first, and then the sources of uncertainty and the corresponding evaluation procedures are explained. The method is used to estimate the uncertainty of the calibration factor of a FP7050 probe at 18 GHz obtained by the PFD system. The good agreement between the calibration results from two PFD systems validates the method.

Abstract:

A calibration system was developed for time grating angular displacement sensors to calibrate errors of this type of sensor. In the system, the motor was controlled by ARM processor according to the setting value coming from the USB port of the computer, and therefore the motor outputted angular displacement values. Meanwhile, with the motor turning, the optical grating, which was used as the criterion instrument, and time grating turned together corresponding angular displacements. Several displacement values from a circle of sensors of time grating and optical grating were sent to computer by serial port to be processed. Furthermore, an error calibration algorithm, which was based on the least square method (LMS), was used in this calibration system. The precise of time grating can reach to ±0.7″after calibrating using this algorithm and the process of error calibration can be automatically made by the computer.

Abstract This paper shows the result of work of the Institute of Micromechanics and Photonics at Warsaw University of Technology and the Length and Angle Division of Central Office of Measures (GUM) [1] in building an automatic multiwavelength interferometric system with extended measurement range for calibration of long (up to 1 m) gauge blocks. The design of a full working setup with environmental condition control and monitoring systems, as well as image analysis software, is presented. For length deviation determination the phase fraction approach is proposed and described. To confirm that the system is capable of calibrating gauge blocks with assumed accuracy, a comparison between the results of 300 mm length gauge block measurement obtained by using other systems from the Central Office of Measures is made. Statistical analysis proved that the system can be used for high precision measurements with assumed standard uncertainty (125 nm for a length of 1 m). Finally the comparison between our results obtained for a long gauge block set (600 mm to 1000 mm long) and previous calibrations made by the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) [2] is shown

The purpose of the study was to present an automated module for the calibration of urban drainage system models. A prepared tool based on the Open Water Analytics toolkit included 12 additional calibration parameters as compared to the existing similar solutions. The module included a gradient optimization method that allowed adjustment of up to five parameters simultaneously, and a trial-and-error method that provided the possibility of testing one or two parameters. The user interface was built in MS Excel to simplify use of the developed tool. The user can select preferable parameters for calibration, choose the optimization method, and determine the limits for the calculated values. The performance and functionality of the automatic calibration module was tested in two scenarios using the drainage model of a 10 ha heavily developed area in Tallinn, Estonia. The calibration results revealed that the maximum deviation between the modelled and measured flow rates was less than 5% for both cases. This is a reasonably good fit for drainage models, which typically encounter numerous uncertainties. Therefore, it was concluded that the module can be successfully used for calibrating hydraulic models created in SWMM5.

Purpose: To validate ANCOR, a new system in quantitative coronary arteriography (QCA). Material and Methods: The validation procedure was performed by comparing the calibration factors of catheters filled with saline solution or contrast medium, and by measuring precision-drilled lumens in a test phantom filled with contrast medium. The results were compared with a well established and validated system, CMS. Results: The calibration test showed that the çalibration factors in the saline and contrast-medium catheters differed only a few percent when catheters with diameters of 2.0-2.67 mm were used. The phantom test showed that both systems overestimated smaller and larger diameters than these. The best results for both systems were achieved in the middle-diameter range. Conclusion: The ANCOR and CMS systems gave comparable results in catheter calibrations and phantom tests.

Abstract:

Different UAV platforms and sensors are used in mapping already, many of them equipped with (sometimes) modified cameras as known from the consumer market. Even though these systems normally fulfil their requested mapping accuracy, the question arises, which system performs best? This asks for a benchmark, to check selected UAV based camera systems in well-defined, reproducible environments. Such benchmark is tried within this work here. Nine different cameras used on UAV platforms, representing typical camera classes, are considered. The focus is laid on the geometry here, which is tightly linked to the process of geometrical calibration of the system. In most applications the calibration is performed in-situ, i.e. calibration parameters are obtained as part of the project data itself. This is often motivated because consumer cameras do not keep constant geometry, thus, cannot be seen as metric cameras. Still, some of the commercial systems are quite stable over time, as it was proven from repeated (terrestrial) calibrations runs. Already (pre-)calibrated systems may offer advantages, especially when the block geometry of the project does not allow for a stable and sufficient in-situ calibration. Especially for such scenario close to metric UAV cameras may have advantages. Empirical airborne test flights in a calibration field have shown how block geometry influences the estimated calibration parameters and how consistent the parameters from lab calibration can be reproduced.

Currently in the smart substation, the traceability method of the digital metering system is a sub-component traceability method, which means that the electronic transformer and the digital power meter are calibrated separately. However, the calibrations of the electronic transformer and the digital power meter have been the problem of measuring department, its traceability having been unable to be a good solution. In this situation, this paper proposes a new digital metering system calibration method, and the overall error of the digital metering system can be calibrated. An on-site calibration of digital metering system was carried out on the heihe xigangzi substation. The result showed that this digital metering system error was 1.013%, which is consistent with the theoretical value.

Model calibration remains a critical step in numerical modelling. After many attempts to automate this task in water-related domains, questions about the actual need for calibrating physics-based models are still open. This paper proposes a framework for good model calibration practice for end-users of 1D hydraulic simulation codes. This framework includes a formalisation of objects used in 1D river hydraulics along with a generic conceptual description of the model calibration process. It was implemented within a knowledge-based system integrating a simulation code and expert knowledge about model calibration. A prototype calibration support system was then built up with a specific simulation code solving subcritical unsteady flow equations for fixed-bed rivers. The framework for model calibration is composed of three independent levels related, respectively, to the generic task, to the application domain and to the simulation code itself. The first two knowledge levels can thus easily be reused to build calibration support systems for other application domains, like 2D hydrodynamics or physics-based rainfall–runoff modelling.

A new CCD camera calibration method based on the translation of Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) is proposed. The CMM brings the CCD camera to produce the relative translation with respect to the center of the white ceramic standard sphere along the X, Y, Z axis, and the coordinates of the different positions of the calibration characteristic point in the probe coordinate system can be generated. Meanwhile, the camera captures the image of the white ceramic standard sphere at every position, and the coordinates of the calibration characteristic point in the computer frame coordinate system can be registered. The calibration mathematic model was established, and the calibration steps were given and the calibration system was set up. The comparing calibration result shows that precision of this method is equivalent to that of the special calibration method, and the difference between the calibrating data of these two methods is within ±1μm.

AbstractA method using computational fluid dynamics to numerically calibrate a flush air data system is presented. A small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) has been equipped with a flush air data system and experimentally tested. The flush air data system uses computational fluid dynamics to train neural networks and is validated using the in-flight data that were previously collected. Results of the flight validation are presented, along with ways to improve the accuracy of the system. Several different calibration approaches are presented and compared with each other. The best-case results with the in-flight calibration are 0.59° and 0.66° for angle of attack and sideslip, respectively, whereas the best-case results when calibrated with computational fluid dynamics data are 0.78° and 0.90°. It is also possible to estimate other air data parameters, such as dynamic pressure, static pressure, and density, with neural networks, but the direct calculation is more accurate. Calibrating the system numerically, such as with the use of computational fluid dynamics, removes the need for any calibration flights. Although not as accurate as the in-flight calibration, numerical calibration is possible and can save the user time and expense.
